Fedora :: GNOME Window Settings - Missing In FC12?

Nov 18, 2009

noticed that Fedora 12 made some odd design decisions for default GNOME settings, and I couldn't locate the System->Preferences->Windows menu item to change them back. The design options I'm talking about:

* No icons in menus (System menu for instance has no icons, though there are icons under the Preferences and Administration sub-menus... the root System menu though has none)

* Icons on toolbars are configured so the label text appears to the right of the buttons, so this makes File Explorer in Nautilus look funny to me. I like the text appearing beneath the icons like it has always been up until now.

why the Windows configuration has been removed from Fedora 12? The control-center package provides the bins for all the preferences items except for gnome-window-settings; so is it upstream that did this? Anyway, I had to dig around in the gconf-editor to find where the window settings are kept so I could change them "manually", since the Windows tool is gone now. For anyone else who wants to know, it's under /desktop/gnome/interface in the gconf-editor (namely, keys toolbar_style, buttons_have_icons, and menus_have_icons are the ones I changed).

Fedora :: FC15 Gnome 3 Missing Window Selector?

Jun 12, 2011

When I minimise windows, or have several open, I've lost the window selector at the bottom to be able to flip between them. I can go to "activities" and then select them there, or I can ctl-tab to them but I used to like the window selector at the bottom. Anybody located the missing window selector ?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - GNOME Appearance Settings Missing The Interface Tab?

Apr 21, 2010

I tried out the 10.04 beta in VirtualBox, and the tab for Interface in Appearance Settings was gone. This tab allowed you to edit the appearance of Toolbars in Ubuntu. You could edit whether Icons showed up in the toolbar buttons and whether Text shows up beside it. This is kind of a minor annoyance for me; is there any way to edit this option outside of the appearance settings? I'm sure there is (like editing some config file or GConf), but I'm not sure where.

Fedora Installation :: FC12 New Install / Top Menu Panel Missing Items

Mar 7, 2010

First off, I have spent several hours searching this and other forums looking for an answer to this, and have tried several things, none of which have fixed this issue. Here is what I'm seeing:I performed a new install of FC12 on a Thinkpad R40, 512Mb RAM, with a 40Gb HDD, 38Gb useable, from a live CD. That leaves a little over 9Gb free for expansion. All went well with the install, but the post-boot upgrade would not complete due to an error with the abrt files. I found a thread discussing this and used the suggested method of performing the updates from a shell, which worked fine. There were LOTS of installations, updates, and replacements, and finally the shell returned "Complete!". After a reboot I was going through the Fedora_12_ User_ Guide.pdf and noticed many items missing from the System Menu as described in section 3.1.1.3 "The System menu". Another thread seemed to address a similar issue with su - then yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment", which I did. It updated over 870 items, then completed with no errors. At this point I logged out and back in, no change, and then tried a reboot, which also did not change anything. Finally, I'm appealing to the community.

Fedora :: Amarok Freezes During Splash Screen FC12/Gnome?

Jan 3, 2010

Just installed Fedora 12 stable release without checking office/productivity, server, or developer "package options". Running Gnome.Used yum to get Amarok on here, and it freezes almost immediately every time I try to open it. The splash shows, a program shows up on the window-manager panel labeled "KDED Glob..." and the system freezes. Mouse, keyboard, all unresponsive. I had FC12 Beta on this exact system and Amarok worked fine. Noting that KDED Glob is probably part of KDE, and that I did not install KDE, I thought maybe Amarok depends on a KDE component that the repo did not pick up as a dependency. Tried to install as much of the mainstream KDE components as I could, with no change.

Fedora :: No Gnome Or Console Login After Upgrade FC10 - FC12

Jan 23, 2010

After the Upgrade of my Fedora Insatallation (FC 10 => 12) I have some problems with Gnome and the Login via console. The system actually boots fine and all kind of services like Postfix, IMAP, Samba, SSHD, Apache, etc. are avialable normally.

If I try however to work directly on the server I only see the completed Fedora progress icon and not as hoped for, the Login to Gnome. Also the attempt to change to a plain console with ALT-CTRL-F1 fails.

Since actually everything seems to work quite fine, I am somewhat helpless, according to should I look for, to get Gnome and the Console Login working again.

I decided to simply start from scratch seeing as how the entire installation process takes but minutes, however, when trying to run ypinit to run the Makefile I found that /var/lib/ypinit is no longer there. So far I've tried removing the ypserv, ypbind, and yp-tools rpm packages and re-intalling them via yum.

Fedora :: Compiz Missing Options And Window Update Errors?

Jan 8, 2010

I just installed the latest compiz as per leigh's instructions - nice, easy install!I notice that the snow application is missing. That was my favorite, but where has it gone??

How about floating windows above desktop cube? Dodge? In which upon selecting a window, the non-selected windows move around it to move it to the front.I also notice that many window updates are very poor. For example, in the compiz settings manager when I switch tabs, the window does not actually update unless I move it. I click on a tab and it looks just like the previous tab. If I move the mouse around, it will update the wind in blocks under the mouse, but not the whole window. And, it would appear that the standard compiz is still available from my desktop settings in KDE. Could I have failed to remove the original compiz?

Fedora :: Bring Up Whatever Service Holds The Network Settings Without GNOME?

Aug 27, 2010

I have a problem with my Fedora system. Whilst I was messing around with my graphics drivers I managed to totally screw up the system, now my desktop won't start, leaving me with just the command prompt. In order to fix it I will need to get my wireless adapter connected to my home network, this is proving tricky. I understand that NetworkManager is responsible for bringing up the network but unfortunately without starting GNOME I don't have the settings available to me (through the nm-cli) or a way to configure it.

Is there a way to bring up whatever service holds the network settings without GNOME? In the meantime I am looking into alternative ways of configuring NM, perhaps through the DBUS interface? Even so, I suspect that I will still need a settings ervice at the end of it..

Fedora :: Sound Settings Not Saved (FC15 & Gnome Shell)

Jun 23, 2011

Not sure if others have noticed this. When I go into sound settings, click the output tab, select the sound device I want to edit and change the bass levels etc, close the window and go back in all the settings are reset to default and no changes are saved.

If I leave the window open and make the changes they are reflected in VLC for example, but if I close the window it again resets to defaults and my Bass is back at Maximum....

Is this a BUG I should report or is there something I can download to get this configured elsewhere or to fix this issue? I seem to recall something similar in Fedora 14 that was fixed, but I cant remember how I did it now

Fedora :: Gnome Choice Missing From Gdm?

Nov 3, 2010

Upgraded to F14 today. After banging away on the secondary LCD monitor for about 2 hours, I finally got that working by de-installing Xfce and re-installing it, booting into gnome and running gnome-display-properties.

But "now" there is no choice for me on the GDM screen for gnome. I don't use it but I do rely on it as a 'backup' in case Xfce goes south.

I installed the Desktop Switching Tool and that doesn't do the job either. I get Xfce every time.

How can I 'rebuild' the login screen to include an option for Gnome, should I need to use it?

Fedora :: GNOME Clock / Weather Missing Completely

Jul 5, 2010

After upgrading to F13 certainly - but from time to time my clock in Gnome will throw a wobbly. Not even consistent wobblies, sometimes the weather is missing completely, as now, sometimes only a slice of the weather icon appears, and the time/date display can be garbled. It seems to happen after a change such as booting up or a weather update, I've tried removing the applet from the panel and re-installing it, and even removing and re-installing the top panel. I'm reluctant to try removing and reinstalling Gnome-applets as that can remove a whole slew of dependencies and possibly bork an otherwise reliable install, after all I can live with it.

Fedora :: 11 Gnome Window Manager Is Very Slow With S3 ProSavage DDR Video Card

Sep 4, 2009

The Gnome Window Manager worked fine with the ProSavage video card under Fedora 10. But after switching to Fedora 11, the Gnome Window Manager's response to graphics requests (such as selecting or moving a window) has been very slow and choppy, when running from the Live CD and from the Hard Drive. The hardware configuration is the following:

-S3 ProSavage video card
-AMD Athlon(tm) XP-M 1700+ 1.46 GHz
-2 GB RAM

After installing Fedora 11 to my Hard Drive, I installed the following packages, hoping that would fix the problem:

xorg-x11-drivers.i586
system-config-display.noarch

After installing the packages and restarting my machine, Fedora 11 detected ProSavage card. The 'savage' driver was loaded during startup (according to dmesg) and the ProSavage card appeared in the Display configuration, when I selected System|Administration|Display. Unfortunately, I didn't detect much improvement. Here's the entry from dmesg: [drm] Initialized savage 2.4.1 20050313 for 0000:01:00.0 on minor 0
As a comparison, I tried running the Fedora 11 Live CD on a box with an ATI Radeon video card and the Gnome Window Manager was smooth and responsive.

Fedora :: Minimize Resize Close Buttons Window 15 Gnome 3 Gconf 2

Jun 4, 2011

No where are how enable get back minimize resize close buttons windows top tab Fedora 15 Gnome3 gconf2

There is a question about this in this thread but the thread title did not have any of the above words in it and since most "new" folks don't think to use the "posts" option, I thought I'd make a new titled post.

This seems to be a big irritant of a lot of people around the net with Gnome 3 so I'm going to confirm what other people have said about how to fix the situation.

In "add software" enter this search term:

gconf

You will see quite a few returns, you should click the following:

A process-transparent configuration system (G Conf1-2.3 yada yada)

Graphical Gconf untilities (it may be pulled with the above however).

Install it/them.

One can then type "Gconf2" in terminal and it will open but then close when the terminal is closed, or one can go to activities/applications/tweak advanced settings( the symbol will be the same as for settings in Gnome 3).

In the "Shell" button one will see "Arrangement of buttons on the title bar". Surprisingly, "All" will already be apparent. One need merely verify that it is on "all".

Close gconf.

Nothing will have happened in terms of new buttons even if one closes and opens, say FireFox.

Then reboot.

After the reboot, all three buttons will be present.

There are not a LOT of configuration items in gconf2 but this one seems to be of paramount importance to a lot of people.

One can also do it from command line, and if someone wants to post that please feel free it won't hurt my feelings.
