Ubuntu 10.10, was working perfectly for months and suddenly, when i boot my laptop, i cant see any desktop icons, and get nothing on right-clicking. All applications that i start do not have title bars, and the Appearence->visual effect->which was always set to Extra, now boots with None.
View 1 RepliesSometime (once every 4-5 time) when I boot my machine the desktop icons are missing and I have to log out and in again to get them back.
Besides that the systems works fine.
I am running Natty 64 bit with a GTX275 graphicscard and the latest drivers from X updates.

It looks like som kind of compiz related problem.
I instaled the samba packages in RHEL 5.1 and everything was fine until i reboot the system. After restarting the system i cant find any of my desktop items in the GNOME view. Also right click is not working.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince I've upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 my computer has started acting strange. First of all, it keeps forgetting my wallpaper. Most of the time, not all of the time. Another problem is that the power-button in the upper right corner does not appear at every boot. It seems to be forgetting other settings as well from time to time.
What I belive might be causing this problem is that I mount my home directory from a server, and a wild guess is that it is somehow a random order of the startup sequence, so that some features are loaded before the mounting is complete.
I think I accidentally pressed a key and then my desktop icons and my taskbar vanished.I've tried everything but I can't fix it. My cursor does not move off the screen so I don't think it is a resolution problem.I'm running Ubuntu 10.10I've had some similar problems in the past but with a single restart of the computer the problem solved itself

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.
View 2 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine, who doesnt understand computers at all, had a virus on her Dell Inspiron 6000 (2-GHz Pentium M processor, 1GB of DDR400 DRAM) laptop. She was unable to boot it up.
So i advised her to boot up Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition. I was instructing her over emesene, so it was quite difficult at times, however, she complained that when she loaded up and went through all the instructions as per the netbook "how to", she only got a purple screen.
After a while, we managed to get her to the actual ubuntu screen, however the icons down the left hand side were all missing. I have a feeling this is something to do with the Graphics Processor: integrated Intel GMA 900 graphics, or ATI Mobility Radeon X300.
I asked her to try and get online but she couldnt so i asked her to find the drivers for her network card and she couldn't find them.
I then asked her to update drivers but they wouldnt update and no drivers were found.
I really want her to get up and running with ubuntu and convert her, but its really frustrating, not getting her online and up and running. But she wants to load XP professional.
I am running Lucid Lynx 10.04.3. Sometimes when I boot the computer, my desktop icons are not there. I ended up looking for a solution, and found one:
1. Hit Alt-F2 and run gconf-editor
2. Go to apps/nautilus/preferences and check 'show_desktop'
However, show desktop was already checked. If I unchecked it, and then checked it again, the desktop icons appeared. Weird, but problem solved right? Wrong.
Sometimes when I boot, the desktop icons are gone again. This doesn't happen at every single boot though. When they are gone again though, I just have to go through the process again. Here's where it gets worse.
Also, sometimes at boot, both the top and bottom taskbars/system trays are completely gone, leaving just the desktop. Once again, this doesn't happen at every single boot. I can't really do anything, so I just reboot again and more often then not, things are back to normal. Or the trays are back, but the desktop icons are gone again.
The weird thing about this is it doesn't happen every time I boot the computer. So if there is a problem I just restart and things are usually fine again. However this is very frustrating, and NOT normal.
Also, because the default drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce MX4000 were not sufficient, I had to remove the Nouveau drivers and install nvidia-glx-96, which corresponds to the official NVIDIA Linux driver version 96.43.17. This is the latest driver version listed for my card on the NVIDIA website. I also had to downgrade from 11.04 because apparently the old drivers are not compatible with the new X Server version in 11.04. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not. I'm wondering if maybe i should just get a newer card so I don't have to deal with the older drivers.
Running Fedora 13, LXDE spin. Today, the pcmanfm package updated to version 0.9.7 during a software update. After a reboot, I no longer have desktop icons and I'm seeing the default Fedora wallpaper. Also, if I right-click on the desktop, I get a standard openbox menu instead of the LXDE one.
I would like to get my old desktop back.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using firefox 5.0 under ubuntu 11.04. I have attached the screenshot of my firefox window. There is no menubar, no title bar, no close, minimize, maximize buttons. I am sure I am not in fullscreen mode.Moving the mouse to the top left corner does not bring out the launcher. Pressing Alt+Tab does not bring out window selection dialog (to switch to another application). I killed firefox from tty1 and restarted firefox. The problem persists.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop fujitsu siemens amilo pi 1505 for about a year there was ubuntu 8.10 installed on it and everything worked fine. 3 days ago i upgraded it to 9.10 and there where the problems began. Sound crashed OS couldn't find sound card. I've removed alsa, pulse audio completly and sound came back. After about 5-15 min's icons dissappeared from the desktop and i had to restart. From then every time i start after booting i see that:

though anything i do there in this window makes no difference whatsoever. So then can I somehow restore graphic settings from the terminal? Or repair/restore basic settings of ubuntu without loosing data?
I just got F12 and installed it on a new hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I have an AMD 64 x2 and an ATI Express 200M video card. I installed CompizConfig setting manager, which did nothing. I then installed Compiz Fusion Icon. This makes compiz work but once I start it all of my windows are missing the title bar. I'm noob and not a programmer but pretty good and figuring things out.In Emerald Theme Manager I can view available themes select them, edit them, etc. There seems to be no way to apply them. Am I missing something or is it just not working?

After a little search i found that in terminal if i type metacity --replace it would come back.And that it did.However, everytime i reboot i need to do it again.Starting to get a little annoying now.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe title bars / window decorations are missing since the last update done about two days ago. I have AMD64 / nvidia 6600 / 2GB / compiz. Latest driver is installed for nvidia and it was working without any problems since 9.04. Now I find that desktop visual effects are selected as 'None' and I am unable to make it 'extra'. Earlier it was set as custom and I had no problems. I have searched the forums and tried many solutions without any success. Now I am running metacity (metacity --replace)with no visual effects, 'compiz --replace' brings back the problem . Is there any way of enabling visual effects // compiz now? Or do I have to re-instal the whole thing

By default it seems set to low display resolution and high CPU. This seems opposite to what one would expect it to be.

I updated all that I was instructed to, as per normal - and at the end of the update was told that I'd need to restart to effect changes. I was in the middle of something else at the time so I left it but I turned the PC off an hour or so later and left it.
On starting up again I cannot get my previous resolution (1600 x 1200) and Second Life resolutely refuses to run giving a "Window creation error". Trying to change the display settings from the System> Administration menu just stops: It asks for the root PW and then nothing happens
Clearly something's gone a bit pear shaped here. I'm using Fedora 12 wth a PAE kernel and on an AMD 5200 chip with an nvidia 7900GS card. Things worked fine until this update so I strongly suspect that to be the cause but what can I do to fix it? Is there any way to "roll back" the update somehow or is there a fix?
when I connected to the L32 HDTV over the HDMI cable, picture came up, and I thought great, plug & play. But the title bar and taskbar were missing and I soon learned that this cheap Vizio TV has a native resolution of 1366x768 and simply upscales and chops off what it considers "overscan" when you drive it at the proper 720p 1280x720. To add to the problems, it doesn't report the correct EDID modes (look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see the probes or install and use the read-edid package) so 1366x768 isn't an option out of the box. I spent days mucking around with /etc/X11/xorg.conf with custom Modelines, strange options and copying confs from other threads, trying to get it working at 1366x768 or 1360x768 or 1368x768 (some variations seem to work for some people)
In the end, I didn't have to touch xorg.conf at all =) All I had to do was install the newer NVIDIA 195 drivers!!! Then you get the lovely Overscan Compensation slider in nvidia-settings, and all is well. First, you will have to apt-get remove the old drivers (probably -185 or -180). Install apt-show-versions for an easy way to do that. I had a bunch of junk, I just removed all packages that had nvidia-someversionnumber in the package name.

EVERY SINGLE TIME when I try to close the Nautilus File Browser (ie when I go to my Documents folder), the desktop flashes all the icons on the desktop a couple of times (for a sec you would see no icons on the desktop) before everything goes back to normal.

for example:
"Google - Mozilla Firefox" is not at the middle of the window title. and on Lynx it's on the left.
I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo when I upgraded to Slack64 13.1 on my asus MB homebrewed desktop and Slack 13.1 on my compaq presario a900 laptop, I started having issues with the xterm title (in Terminal--not Konsole) being too dynamic. By "too dynamic" I mean that I can't actually change the title. The dynamic title (from my .bashrc) is basically just pwd. Whenever I try to set the title (via terminal->set title (menu)), I changes it for a split second, and then reverts back to the dynamic title.
This is merely a petty annoyance, so to get around it, I added an xtitle function that I grabed somewhere online (just echos "�33]0;$*�07"). So for nano-ing some file, I'd type:xtitle some_file.txt; nano some_file.txt
That works just fine (kind of annoying to type though). running xtitle alone won't actually change the name either though (I'm pretty sure it's the same command as what terminal does anyway). That is, running: xtitle some_file.txt
changes the title for a split second, and the reverts back to my old pwd.What I really want is to have it dynamically name it "some_file.txt" whenever I use nano, but that appears to be a functionality of zsh (with the preexec() fxn).I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if you have a fix for it.
I've been using Kubuntu for about 6 months now and decided to try something new. So i switched to arch linux, and after much deliberation, I got KDE functional on it. There's just one problem. The icons aren't displaying properly. Here's a picture:

How do I change the turquoise-ish plasma-desktop and title bar things. Also whenever i open something, it asks me basically where i want to position it. How do i stop it from asking me that as well?
Also, how do I login as something other than root? I did adduser, but no login screen shows up for me.
If I use Dosbox in full screen mode, and then exit back to KDE, my desktop icons get shuffled around.I'm using the desktop folder view in KDE 4.4.3I've noticed that this also happens with ScummVM as well, so I think it's more a KDE issue?
