I installed Linux yesterday alongside windows vista. Everything went very smooth. I restarted the computer multiple times without issue, and the menu would pop up asking me which os to load. Everything was good. But today I attempted to boot up my computer and nothing happens. The screen just stay black. The lights come on on the laptop, but nothing else. Either I try to boot it and it goes on then off quickly, or it just sits there, still on, with a black screen. I don't know if this is related, but when I was messing around with ubuntu yesterday after I installed it, it would randomly freeze and my caps lock light kept blinking on and off. I was forced to restart when this happened and then everything would be ok.
i have been using it since a friend suggested to use it a month or so ago. I have knowledge of computers so I am not ignorant of everything (I say this for the linux pros in case this is a simple solution, and I have checked many forums before actually posting this question with no luck) and have tried several options. My laptop freezes at random times with the caps lock light blinking which seems a little strange. the only correlation I can make to this problem is that every time I use only wifi without the ethernet cable plugged in it will freeze. I have read a few forums that say it could be a bug in the wireless card drivers and some suggest it could also be graphic card drivers but it seems to only happen when wifi is enabled.I am using an ASUS G73 series with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 graphics card, 8GB DDR3-1066 RAM, Atheros AR9285 802.11n Wireless LAN adapter, and an Intel Core i7-720QM processor (1.6GHz/2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB L3 cache). I am also running Ubuntu 10.10 off of a 320 GB seagate Momentus and windows 7 off the stock 500 GB Seagate Momentus.
I am having a very annoying problem with my laptop.I am experiencing many freezes.When my laptop freezes, it shows the caps lock and scroll lock lights blinking.At first I thought it was a problem with flash (here is original thread: URL... )In the original thread, I thought the freeze's were being caused by the flashplayer, but it apparently isn't the case.The last time I experienced the freeze, I was playing around with the compiz desktop effects.
Sony Vaio EB 16 FG - running ubuntu 10.10 froze while resuming from dimmed screen with blinking scroll lock and caps log LED. The scenario was this :- I just downloaded the acpi using synaptic package manager. Then installed laptop mode tool using synaptic. cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode 0
Means its not yet enabled. But decided to remove it .(read drive spin up and down is not good for HDD) Had left the laptop for some time , it dimmed screen . When I resumed it froze. No mouse movement.only blinking caps and scroll. Just wondering if acpi is the culprit,since haven't seen this behaviour before and it happened after removing laptop mode tools
I keep starting up Fedora and I'm not able to get far (although it's not always at the same time) before my screen will go black, except it shows the mouse/cursor - but it's frozen, and thhen the caps-lock light starts blinking and I can't do anything or get it to recover. Sometimes it happens after 30 seconds, sometimes 40+ seconds and sometimes within 15 or so seconds.
How do I stop this and diagnose this?
I've tried, in the boot-startup to choose an older kernel version, butt the same thing occurs!
I have: Fedora 11 Kernel: 2.6.29.6-217.2.16.fc11 i586 Asus EEE PC 1002HA
One other thing, it does always seem to happen after I've turned on wireless. And I've been using F11 for months now with no issue.
everything works perfect including reboot and shutdown but not the hibernate or suspend (sleep). Whenever i try to do Suspend, my caps lock starts blinking and the screen goes white
I installed ubuntu 10.10 and it seems everytime I unplug my laptop it freezes and the caps lock flashes. This happens pretty much every time. I installed fedora 14 had no problem with unplugging the charger but I didn't like it and couldn't get WiFi working right. So I installed ubuntu 10.10 hoping it would be gone and I have the same problem again. I have a AMD Athlon II Dual-Core Processor M300 (32-bit) 3GB DDR2 memory 320GB HDD (5400rpm)
Can I change the Caps Lock key to Control and still keep the on/off nature of Caps Lock? I've checked into using xmodmap and seem to have hit a dead end. Many people want to swap them, but they also want to swap the way they work. I'd rather keep my new Control key as an on/off switch for Control.

I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly.It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights
There is a very strange problem I've been having. When I enable either Caps Lock or Num Lock the media controls on my keyboard cease to work. I have Googled this one to death but found nothing. This problem existed in Xubuntu 9.10 and now still exists in Xubuntu 10.04. The keyboard I use is a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I would love to be able to use the Caps Lock and Num Lock without the worry that I am disabling the media controls
I have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.
After 6 months or so I noticed my 9.10 install getting sluggish and it started to freeze habitually. I let it go until one day it consistently froze at the startup login screen. I installed 10.04 and the problem continued - After first installing it worked for about 6 hours without a crash, and then once again the problem developed into consistently freezing at the login screen.
I tested with some USB Live sessions and my live sessions never froze, even when active for a whole day. Remembering some I/O BAD SECTOR error messages from my 9.10 crash, I determined the error may be with the hard drive so I bought a new Hitachi SATA hdd (needed more GBs anyway). I installed 10.04 on the new hdd (H and after 6 hours again it crashed. When it crashes the screen freezes for about 3 seconds and then the graphics wildly split and it's just a jagged gray screen. However, as time has gone on over the past 2 days, the freezing situation has been better in that it hasn't come to the point where the computer consistently freezes on the login screen. The time before it freezes has varied from 10 minutes to 6 hours.
I think it's maybe a software issue with the nvidia drivers. I'm having trouble diagnosing this bug or providing information. I've included the output of lspci -vvv I have the nVidia GeForce Go 6100 graphics card
Well i've been having a problem that my computer randomly completely freezes. A while ago, it happened again, but i wasnt able to log back in anymore, getting this screen when gdm tries to load URL...
Have a HP Proliant DL380 which had Ubuntu installed. Have not used it for about 6 months but wanted to resurrect the machine. Switched it on and it would not boot. Went through the usual boot load then would freeze with a flashing scroll and caps lock. Thought I would just re install and recreate the partions but now when I try to install Ubuntu 9 from an offical disc I get the same error. I have attached a screen shot (well photo).
I am new to Ubuntu and am confused on how to fix my flashing wireless light issue. After browsing Google people are recommending that I make a script and put it into a folder, but when I try to put the file in there I get an error of "Error moving file: Permission denied".
Being and old Gnome user and a brand new XFCE user, does anyone know how to disable the Caps Lock key in Xubuntu 11.04? It's rather easy in Gnome and obviously not so easy in XFCE.
I popped in a scratched up CD of my wife's friend's music. It would not play or copy, had to just try anyway. So now the optical drive tray will not open, and the light is blinking. I have restarted the machine. Could this be my OS or other software error?
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my older computer. Before the installation I used Windows Vista and Windows 7 and I decided to do a clean installation. When I ran Ubuntu from DVD it was perfectly healthy and no problems appeared. After the installation there became random freezes. The system freezes but mouse is still moving and can't do anything else than reboot.
From the other topics I read that it might be a problem with GPU drivers and I heard about this Envy program which might be able to install some drivers but don't know how to install that.
The computer is pretty old:
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ ASUS M2R-FVM (includes integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 1150) 1 GB of RAM 320GB Hard drive
And I couldn't find any Linux drivers for the graphic card from AMD's internet page.
i am using ubuntu7.10. my ESC key and CAPS lock key functions got interchanged..when i use WINDOWS the keys perform their normal functions.. i dont know why their functions got interchanged in ubuntu.
I wonder is it possible to make capslock and/or scroll lock indicators blink when you have unread message or so. Like in nofication area (like when envelope in notification area becomes blue).
I had a problem with the new network manager a week ago and got it solved with help from the forum so now I'm back again. I have a dual boot with Windows 7 (I have to use it when serving my corporate masters) so I wasn't in my Fedora partition much this week. I just noticed this and I'm positive it wasn't doing it before my network manager problem but I'm not sure when it started or if they're related. I'm running F15. The machine is an HP Elitebook 8440p and has a wifi light that is also a touch button to turn the wireless on/off. Whenever there is activity on the network now it blinks between orange and blue. I know that isn't really a big deal but it's really annoying and is driving me completely nuts!! The normal behavior is orange when it's off, solid blue when it's on (or connected) and blinks orange/blue just while it's connecting. During network activity it's always been just solid blue and that's what I want. I found a script that some Ubuntu users said fixed the same problem but when I tried to copy it the directory they said to put it in "/etc/network/ifup.d" doesn't exist. I'm assuming that's a distro difference between Ubuntu and Fedora? Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas how to fix it?
I wanted to remap my Caps Lock key to ESC, both because I don't need the Caps Lock key and because it will make it easier to use vi. I know how to do this in X, but is there a solution that will work in command line mode too?
I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. The Caps lock indicator on my keyboard is not working (always off). The Num lock indicator works fine. I have the same problem with other keyboards. The other keyboards work with Windows & DOS. This isn't a show-stopper, but I'd like to get it corrected as it's problematic when typing in passwords, etc. that have hidden fields.
