Apr 30, 2010I'd like to upgrade to 10.04 from Karmic but want to make sure it will leave me with a working system afterwards.
I figured a good way to test it is to create a disk image with dd and then try upgrading in VirtualBox using that image. The idea is that if it is successful, it'll probably be successful on the real machine too.
The only problem is my home partition, which is >1.4 TB. I don't have that much space left on any other hard disks. So I would like to somehow exclude certain directories in /home (or the entire partition) from appearing in the image.
Is this even possible? Or does anyone have any better ideas?
General :: Windows - Using On A Virtual Machine To Run A LAMP Test Server?
Apr 9, 2011I'm a web developer and I am building a site on a CMS that has issues moving from a WAMP server to LAMP. The live server is LAMP and I am running Windows 7. I don't want to run into problems moving from the test server to the live server, so I was wondering if I could somehow run Linux using a virtual machine (using Windows Virtual PC which I think supports Linux or VirtualBox) and then using a Linux equivalent of WAMP2 server as a test server. how to do this and what the best Linux distribution to use would be?

Ubuntu :: Getting Virtual Resolution In 8.10?
Feb 8, 2009For various reasons, I am trying out the livecd of ubuntu 8.10. My monitor can not support higher than 800x600. Unhelpfully, many menus/dialogs require more resolution than that, so there are buttons off the screen I just can't see/get to. I can't seem to find any setup option that will allow me to do a virtual resolution setting (panning to get the rest of the screen). Am I forced to dive into text editors and config files? Or where should I look in the menu system for this setting?

Feb 1, 2011I am using Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Optiplex GX270, with the Intel video chip. I have a problem with my virtual consoles/terminals (<ctrl-alt>F1-F6). The default screen resolution was set to 1600x1200 at installation, which results in a nearly microscopic, unreadable font. I posted the problem on this thread on ubuntuforums.org, where they suggested adding GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=640x480 to /etc/default/grub and /etc/grub.d/00_header. Still no joy--the console screen resolution still was 1600x1200.
I have noticed that the screen resolution changes three times during boot; it starts at standard VGA, 640x480, then switches to 1600x1200, then finally to 1024x768, which is my preferred resolution in X. But, if I switch to a virtual console, the resolution shoots up to 1600x1200 again. There are times when I like to use virtual terminals, and I would like to avoid eyestrain.

Apr 16, 2010I seem to recall earlier versions of Linux that allowed virtual screens larger than the physical screen that scrolled...I would really like this functionality because I am running on an Acer Aspire One, and I would really like to run Eclipse, and some windows in Eclipse crunch down and hide options I need. Is there a way to have my 1024x600 display operate as 1024x768? I am running openSUSE 11.2 and a pretty much default installation (KDE).

Works fine, except: Virtual Terminals are at the native LVDS resolution 1024x600 meaning that they only use the upper left hand corner of the 1920x1080 monitor. Why? (Or maybe I should say that their resolution is right - the font is correct, not huge - but the VT is limited to 1024x600.)

Dec 20, 2009virtual console (run level 3,5) screen resolution. After installing fed12 the resolution is higher(which is good) then in previous versions. After upgrading from 11 -> 12 the resolution of the virtual consoles stays the same, to large. I already compared grub.conf,i18n which are the same. Where is the resolution configuration for fed 11,12?

Oct 3, 2010This is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.
I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.

Switching back to the open source drivers, it works automatically, but I got no clue with these ones. Someone say I should use uvesafb by modifing initramfs accordingly.

Jun 18, 2010I am running Puppy from a usb in Windows 7 using Virtual Box and I can't get the 1280 x 800 screen resolution to work. The probe doesn't recognize my monitor initially in the video setup. When I choose this screen resolution in the xorgwizard it ignores the resolution I select and uses 1600 x 1200. If I try to reduce the resolution in the resolution changer, it decreases the window size but the desktop stays at the same resolution effectively cutting off the majority of the desktop from view. I have been trying the intel, radeon, vesa, and vmware drivers but none of them seem to work. Do I need to install a special video driver? I am using a unibody macbook.

Aug 11, 2010I redefined the resolution on my monitor to 640x480 and in the middle of the reset, the definition routine shut down for no known reason. This left the screen in an ambiguous state with much of the display off the screen at the bottom. I reran the resolution routine and the "OK" button is off the screen to the bottom and I can't get to it to reset the resolution. Nothing I can do raises the display up high enough to reach that button. Put another monitor on the machine and it behaves fine at the correct resolution. The question I have is: Where is the definition file that I can delete for the other monitor so when I put the monitor back on line the parameters will be reread. Thought it would be xorg-conf but it turns out that Xserver apparently takes care of it with something called EDID?

Sometimes i get a _VERY_ loud beep-sound, eg when i run out of battery or, the case that has me coming here when i'm working in a virtual terminal (tty1-6) and hit backspace once too often, that is, when the command line is actually empty.Not that big of a deal you might think, but, especially when you're wearing good (read: possibly loud) headphones the experience is that god damn unpleasant that i'd like to make sure it won't happen again.Oh and well, just hitting mute (in gnome, which doesn't have a lot to do with tty1 anyways) won't do the job.

May 27, 2010I imagine I'll have to install something, but Google has shed no light for me thus far. And just to clarify, when I say virtual terminal I mean the terminals accessed by CTRL+ALT+(F1-F6). I'm going to be doing a challenge/learning experience where I don't allow myself a graphical interface for a month. way around BASH through adaption. However, if I have to go a month without music I will go insane.
So, even if this is possible can I listen to music from the internet (....., playlist.com, etc.) or just music on my hard drive? And I'm not sure if this thread belongs in Desktop Environments or not, that section seemed to focus on graphical interface.
Ubuntu :: Virtual Terminal's Text Overlapping?
Aug 20, 2010I cannot have any more than 47 characters on each line of my virtual terminal without everything on that line disappearing. The text is apparently still there, since commands that need more than 47 characters still work but the text stays hidden. After the text has been overlapped I can type as many characters as I like and it no longer overlaps, but my PS1 on that line and all previously overlapped text stays hidden.I'm almost certain that the problem is in my bash configuration since it happens in a terminal emulator as well as the virtual terminal.

May 4, 2010Clean install of 10.04 Server 32 bit.Only services OpenSSH Server and Print Server.Machine boots and can be accessed through ssh.Virtual terminals (cntl-alt-1,2,3,4,... do not result in video to the monitor (no sync) or a display.If I type blind, I can log in, ssh back to my other machine, and create a file. So the virtual terminal is there and listening to the keyboard and running, just not creating a display.
This machine has been working fine with 08.10 for quite time up until yesterday, so I don't believe it is a hardware problem.Any ideas why the video on the virtual terminals would not work?
