Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Setup MIDI Keyboard To Play Piano

Jun 5, 2010

I just switched to Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm looking for a way to be able to play piano with my M-audio Keystation 88es keyboard. In Windows I use the amazing Synthogy Ivory piano sounds. Is there anything similar in linux? everything up? I followed different instructions on how to setup Jack to make it work and it can see the keyboard but I wasn't able to get any sound out of it.My computer has the Asus built-in sound card and I also have a separate M-audio Audiophile 192 sound card.

Ubuntu :: MIDI Controller - USB Piano Keyboard Setup

Mar 31, 2010

I'm looking for info on setting up a piano type usb keyboard (also called midi controller?) in ubuntu. Any of the references I have found cite alsa, and I'm assuming they won't work with pulse. Also I'm sort of stalling on purchasing said keyboard until I feel there's a reasonable probability of it working. Here's a reference with alsa [URL].

I am writing a udev rule for my apple keyboard. I cannot get a working symlink because it shows up as two /dev/input/eventX device nodes, one which shows activity when I 'cat' it, the other which does not. The symlink usually points to the "dead" one.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Yamaha Disklavier Piano Won't Play Midi

Apr 21, 2010

I have switched from windows in the past few months and have solved all my issues with Ubuntu so far. The only problem I still have now is that I can not play midi files on my piano through Ubuntu. This is the piano I have: [URL] When I had windows, I used Dell Latitude c600, Van Basco's software: [URL] and one of these USB-midi cables: [URL]

to play my midi files on the piano. In ubuntu 9.1 I can play the midi but only through the laptop. It does not get sent to the piano. I'm new to Linux but can follow direction. Hate to be going back to windows. Installing Van Basco through wine keeps crashing and does not work.

Is there a way I can run Mac (OS X) programs on a Linux (Ubuntu) system in a virtual machine like either Wine or VMware (maybe that is the wrong term) for Windows programs?

Specifically, I want to develop an iphone app and I would like to use the simulator and IDE "Xcode" provided by Apple but they only will run on Mac.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Open Different Audio File Tracks Into The Same Piano Roll?

Mar 24, 2010

My question would be this: is it possible to open different audio file tracks into the same piano roll, or even open multiple piano roll instances at the same time? If the answer is "no", then does anyone know a good LADSPA sampler plugin? Basically, I need to be able to load multiple samples into the same instrument and have them set to a range on the keyboard, similar to what the advanced sampler in Reason does.

Having multiple samples in the beat editor is not the same, as I need to control the note off (without re-loading the sample and just changing the end time, that is too cumbersome). If any of this seems weird I should specify that I am making breakcore music where drum beat samples are highly manipulated and a piano roll for each sample is just going to be too annoying to program.

OpenSUSE :: Install Electric Sheep In 11.3?

Aug 30, 2010

I was trying to install electric sheep on my 11.3 opensuse, because I thought it looked quite cool in the screenshots. For those of you who dont know what this is about have a look here:

about | electric sheep

In the dowlnoad section, one can see that ubuntu installation has no problems, and I kinda hate that, because everywhere I look for X program, there is always an ubuntu precompiled pakcage or scriot or whatever but hey!, this is an excellent oportunity to try my first source code install, i thought.... naive

And the first problem is... that I cant find the latest source, anywhere no tar in sight, not even rpm, no nothing, nothing at least understadable by me who red like 15 articles of how to install from source (obiously that by no means means that I understand well what im doing), and frankly im kinda tired of searching and looking Browse Electric Sheep Files on SourceForge.net Thats the download your source code page that has nothing on it! I dont ask from you to search for me or anything like that SourceForge.net: Electric Sheep - Develop In the page above is what I suppose is the source code but what do I do to tar.gz it so I can then test my newly skills!

Programming :: Playing Piano From The Terminal

Oct 14, 2010

In short, what I want to achieve is this: echo "a b c a" | piano.sh And hear it, like it was played on a piano. As you can see, I really would like to keep it simple, it is for a school project, and this is a minor but important thing. I am getting the data from the serial port and that part is working. I have been looking at software synthesizers etc. but again, I want it to be simple. :-)

OpenSUSE :: Japanese Virtual Keyboard ?

I am trying to find a good virtual keyboard that is in Japanese. there doesn't seem to be much options for virtual keyboards, let alone one in japanese. The only one I have found is xvkbd, but it is very limited and somewhat glitchy. I tried setting it to Japanese, but all that does is add a button to switch to japanese that you annoyingly have to hit every time you want to enter a character. And not only that, even though the keyboard is in hiragana, it inputs katakana. Are there any other options for a virtual Japanese keyboard, or at least a way to get xvkbd to input hiragana?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Difference Between Native And Virtual

Jun 9, 2010

I've been running Sony Vegas in VirtualBox. My machine is dual core 2ghz and has 2 GB RAM so the VB gets 90MB video and 950MB system. XP is 32 bits. I also have the identical set up installed natively. The native version gets the full 2 GB system and 512 video. A non scientific test tells me the VirtualBox system is faster. My camera is a new T2i which produces .MOV files. The only program that can read them without stutter is VLC in Ubuntu. Quicktime in both Windows version stutters all over the place. VLC in Windows is so bad I deleted it.

To the point: I'm going to build a new system for video editing using at least 8 GB RAM and Windows 7 (Sorry, I don't have the patience to wait for Lumeira or Lightworks). I like the fact that I can be in both environments without booting. But, I'd like some real world advise about this. In a pure 64 bit environment, will I be better off in a dual-boot situation or virtual? I'm reluctant to load up W7 on my current system because of the hassle associated with getting a new registration for the new system.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Virtual Screen Too Big For Memory?

Dec 3, 2010

I'm trying to set up an older computer for a friend that does not have one I've been using Ubuntu for a little over a year on a couple of systems, and this is the first time I have come across an issue I could not find an answer to. During the boot sequence, and right before the GUI, I'm getting a "Low Graphics Mode" warning and it tells me that the "Virtual screen too big for memory; 5120k needed, 4096 K available" then it gives me some options, and the only one that seems to lead me anywhere is the "Load Ububntu in low res mode this once" Ironically, once the Ubuntu GUI is booted up, the screen resolution is fine (1280x1024 actually - but it is an unknown monitor) This happens every time I re-boot the system and is more of an annoyance then anything else, but since its to be a gift I'd like to get rid of this error message.
