My KDE sessions freeze randomly- while only doing some basic work, browsing etc. Keyboard and mouse do not respond and I can just do the hard reset. how do I find what might be wrong? Where in the logs do I look??
View 2 RepliesI have a Ubuntu 10.04 fresh installation on my HP laptop. Installation successful and boot OK. But the desktop randomly freeze. During freeze(about 15s each time), all programs are not responsive. Sometimes I can switch program by click, but program seems locked. How can I know which module cause the freeze?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIf I ssh to a remote machine and then lose internet connectivity, the session freezes. I can't control-c or otherwise abort and go back to my local xterm or terminal prompt but if I wait several minutes it will do so.
There must be some way to force it to abort the remote ssh session when connectivity is lost. I'm on a Mac but I believe this happens on cygwin or linux as well.
Today im experiencing many freezing issues with my office desktop running lucid amd64.
Every application i run, seem to randomly freeze and then crash.. i dont understand wy, yesterday the pc worked as usual.
I was using kernel .38, i tryed to switch back to .32, but nothing change;

I dont see any packages that can cause this error. The freezes seem to be related to the hard disk: if i try to copy/download large files, the freezes happen instantly; but i've tryed Smart test from disk utility, and GSmart from a live cd: the hard disk seem to be ok. Even memtest doesnt report any error.
I use Gnome mplayer but it freeze random when playing videos and just show a black screen without sound and if i simply press backward or forward button to send it 10 sec forward or backward it will continue to play video until it freeze again.sometimes it takes seconds to freeze and sometimes half an hour or more.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed openSUSE 11.2 KDE via LiveCD on my desktop computer and have been loving it. The problem is that it will randomly freeze and requires a restart. I've tried booting up in safe-mode, but it still does it. Also, when it does, the screen flickers and flashes in and out before it freezes. And before anyone asks, yes, I have my NVIDIA drivers.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI thought I should share a solution to a freeze issue I was having. Fedora 11 was running well but then started to freeze randomly when it was sitting unused. This could happen multiple times per day. I would have to power off to get it to reboot. Firefox was always open at the time of freezes and I had recently loaded several programs to try and run wmv files....Xine, GStreamer. So, I unloaded the programs. I also went into Firefox options and removed Xine as the default program for opening different types of files. The freeze issue is now cured. I have no idea how this caused the freeze and I never did get wmvs to run but at least the freeze issue seems gone.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just recently notice that my Fedora 13 is randomly stop at boot. This is a fresh install less than a week and with all the updated kernel and software as of today. I could not get much information from /var/log/messages (only about 3 lines at the time it froze).
It froze straight after it finishes the boot sequence. I can see a mouse cursor but that's about it. The last init sequence I could see before going to X was "atd" (if that helps at all)
This install is on a single Seagate 1.5TB drive without any other drives attached to the system (I rule out if that's problem with the other hard drives)
on Gigabyte P35DS3 mobo on ICH9 port
the mobo has AHCI mode for the hard drive
I got some bad sector on the hard drive (40 sectors)
For some reason, it kept stopping when I cold boot. Once it stop and I press the reset button it normally works.
I found another forum mentioning it can be issue with the video driver. So I here's further information of my system code...
Unfortunately, I've encountered a disaster the likes of which I've never seen before:Yesterday, in slackware 13.1, while using firefox, the window would no longer move or resize, and I could no longer click on things in that window.While this happens, the icons in xfce4 panel no longer acknowledge that the mouse is rolling over them, so I can't launch terminal from a panel, etc.; however I am still able to right click on desktop and open terminal and other apps that way.Since it was high time to upgrade to 13.37, and since I was experiencing weirdness, I decided to do a clean install: I actually repartitioned my drive, and reformatted the partitions (all xfs, and after backing up my data, of course)...
I don't know if that's significant, or not. there seems to be some lines in /var/log/Xorg.0.log about my logitech mouse.way too complicated to write by hand.I will log out and back on... sometimes that frees up other windows. Then I'll add the Xorg.0.log.
GDM has no session options listed when I click on my username. I should have openbox and lxde. I read that GDM finds it's sessions from /usr/share/xsessions so I checked there and I have desktop files for both. currently I'm using WDM and it's working fine.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Lucid Lynx 10.04 installed on my eee 900ha and I'm unable to log in to my desktop.
Earlier today I logged in successfully and I uninstalled a couple of unused programs (pitivi, evolution, fspot, and another that I can't remember). I then shut down the computer. Later when I booted the computer back up, I was greeted with the usual ubuntu login screen but I noticed that there were no options in the sessions drop-up menu. I entered my login information and pressed enter, and the screen went black, then went back to the login screen again.
I'm using gnome.
i have tightVNCserver running to provide me with a means of working on my machine whilst the wife watches mythTV on the (physical) display.
in 8.04 i used to have "gnome-panel &" as a line in my /home/mike/.vnc/xstartup file, and it worked fine, when i logged in via VNC i had a nice gnome panel to start apps from etc.
since 10.04 this stopped working and i had to change gnome-panel to gnome-session. this works... but now it loads everything up in the VNC window just like it does in my main window. this is a problem because it loads things like mythTV front end and so on... i don't want it to do that in my VNC window.
does anyone know how it might be possible for me to have two different 'types' of gnome session? Settings i change in System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications are common to both my VNC and my physical displays so i can't turn off mythTVfrontend in there to solve the problem.
i'm not sure why gnome-panel stopped working in my xstartup file, but it happened when i upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04. if i try it in the ugly xterm window on VNC i get:

Will it be possible to maintain multiple sessions from Ubuntu?Actually we are working on one open source application and we have setup this application on one of our Ubuntu machine and this would act as a server for other developer's windows machine. Is any utility available(preferable open source) using which we will be able to access the Ubuntu server from all 4-5 developer's Windows machines?
Our requirement will be to access the whole system including console and GUI (same like remotely access) by using different sessions so that all 4-5 developers can start work together on the same Ubuntu machine.
i've been searching for an hour and i have no idea how to list that. the closest thing to what i need is ck-list-sessions, but it doesn't show my freenx display. i need something that would show all my displays running.

but I do not see an entry for it in the list of sessions. The same is true if I go to "System -> Administration -> Login Screen" - I don't see all sessions in the list for the default sessions.
what's going on here? Do I need to tell GDM to go through this list again? I've tried restarting GDM but no success. This is ubuntu 11.04 btw.
I am following directions to set up my Ubuntu Installation (8.10) for Netbook Remix. As part of the directions it asks me at the end to:
Add netbook-launcher (if using 8.10) to your startup programs. Go to System>Preferences>Sessions and add entry for this command.
I went to sessions to do it and see Netbook Launcher listed and selected to add it but it prompts me with the following menu:

What do I put in these blanks so that I can set this up? For Command it gives me the option to browse.
Do you know where the Gedit saved sessions are located? In my case I saved a session and titled it 'Redit'. I'd like to backup this 'Redit' file.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have configured vsftpd on Ubuntu 9.04 and it is working fine. I have configured non-anonymous ftp so that only few of us can acces that ftp. Now I want to secure it using ssl. so I have changed the vsftpd.conf file and entered the following lines in it.

After the restarting the service now when I try to connect to the ftp server it gives me this error. 530 Non-anonymous sessions must use encryption.
I've got two monitors setup and it seems the only way to get separate gamma and brightness settings working on separate screens is through separate X sessions.
The problem though is after setting up and configuring Compiz the second monitor only displays the wallpaper and lets me move my mouse onto it i don't get any gnome panels nor do i get a menu if i right click on the desktop which suggests that gnome doesn't load on the other monitor at all or is out of bounds of the resolution.
It seemed to go like this during the configuring of Compiz as the right monitor windows and such seemed to crash then since then its just been the symptoms I described.
I'm including my Xorg.conf incase its of any use.

Yesterday, after I logged out of Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx), I was unable to log back in. When I enter my password the screen goes blank for a second and then it returns to the login menu. Also, I have noticed that there are no sessions to choose from (e.g. Gnome, Unity, etc.). Maybe this has something to do with it.
The last thing I did before logging out for the last time was removing a package called "indicator-datetime", which I got from installing Unity. Maybe this information isn't useful but it really seemed to me like it caused my problem.
I want to find a way to bring up the session menu without using the Indicator Applet Session in the default gnome panel. I've figured out how to do this for the main menu with a keyboard shortcut (Alt+F1). And I found Ubuntu documentation here that says Super+Esc will bring up the Sessions Menu in Lucid but it doesn't work for me. I could create a custom launcher if I knew what command would bring up this menu but I can't find any info on this. Basically I want to get rid of the default gnome panel but still have the functionality of the Sessions Menu.Note: I removed the Me Menu from my Indicator Applet Session by running sudo apt-get remove indicator-me in a terminal. Would this be interfering with the keyboard shortcut?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI started a new x session on tty8. This is display 1. The first session is tty7 display 0.
I can switch between them easily enough. CTRL ALT F7 goes to tty7. CTRL ALT F8 goes to tty8.
But if I try to run, say, the "import" command for screenshots on tty8, while switched to tty7, all it gives is a black screen.
The reason being, I think, because only one session is actually outputting at any given time. How do I make both of them output, so I can take a screenshot on 1 session, but use the other session to do other stuff?
I often use the terminal to shut down my system whilst watching TV in bed, I use SUDO AT TIME and HALT.This works a treat most of the time, but a couple of time this week I have woken in the night and the PC/TV is still running? Maybe I mis typed somthing? Is there any way I can view previous terminal sessions to check ???

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to recreate a website on a local system using LAMPP. I need to change some file permissions on localhost.
I have tried running a normal Filezilla session, as well as running as root but the system always denies Filezilla permissions.
I know I can do it directly using CHMOD on it's own but I would like to try to replicate the FTP sessions I can run on my remote server where I can change permissions in Filezailla without issue.
If I choose 'Ubuntu' (i.e Unity) or 'Classic' then no bars/menus load and I'm left with just a desktop. Chossing 'Classic No Effects' is the only sessions which gives me menu bars.I'm guessing this is related to the 3D driver not functioning correctly. Natty 11.04, Compaq 6720s laptop, intel onboard gfx.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is an odd one, and it's probably just my system - I don't receive half of the new MSN messages I get sent. If I talk to someone and leave the window open, I'll get all of their messages; if I close the window, there's only a 10% chance I'll get their reply.
This happened once before, and telepathy-logger was having a fit; it's not this time. Has anyone else encountered any issues in the new release?
Amendment: Pidgin seems to work ok, but I miss the empathy integration; the pidgin plugin for notifications takes the edge off for now.
