View 1 RepliesI'm trying to set up automatic recording of user sessions when they login without their knowledge. I tried sticking the script command into /etc/profile and but that didn't really work. I also tried /etc/bashrc but that had the same affect.I have also tried setting the shell in /etc/passwd to SHELL=/bin/bash /usr/bin/script -q /testing.txt.

Think of a sort of "save all these tabs" feature except applied to the file manager only. And for additional clarification: I run several desktops and each one has a file manager on it with several tabs of the file manager open. Each set of tabs are related to a topic I am working on.

Currently, i have configured the multiple xterm sessions and placed them in each corner of workspace on dual monitors, but after the system rebooted the xterm sessions are resumed, but they display on one monitor instead of two monitor and overlapped each other. I followed to save the desktop setting at in the "startup Applications preferencesemember currently runnign application". This would not work as i wish. Maybe I mis typed somthing? Is there any way I can view previous terminal sessions to check ???
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just added 8 additional vncserver sessions(Xvnc) (using a well-documented procedure my predecessor used) to my RH Enterprise 2.4.21-4 (OK it went by fast) server. This brings the number of session listed in my /etc/sysconfig/vncservers file to ~32. Applications and terminals now seem to choose if they will open or not in the Xvnc session and not all sessions start at boot. I can start them manually, and they will work, but then they stop working properly. You can open a session, view the active desktop, click on menus and associated drop-down items to try and open apps, but the apps/terminals just won't open. Is there a limit to the number Xvnc Sessions that can be managed? If so, what is it? This happens whether I try to connect from a Winddows box or another Linux box.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI regularly work on different projects, using different software.
For project 1 I need to open for ex : Filezilla, Gedit and Nautilus (set to a specific folder)
For project 2 I need to open foz ex : Gimp, Nautilus (set to another specific folder) etc.
What I would like is a kind of sessions manager, where I could create entries "project 1", "project 2", etc.
And with one click or command, open all the softwares I need.
Perhaps there's an easy way to write a batch file for this?
I was doing some rather lengthy procedures using a terminal. Then I wrote script using Kate, and input it into that terminal, and then realized that I was logged in as a normal user in that terminal as opposed to a superuser, which is how I was logged in at the other terminal. I've never noticed this before because I've never done anything that takes this long.
Is there any way to link all terminal sessions in such a way that they all show me logged in as the same user? I don't even know if this is even important, but I don't want to risk losing any things that I had done.
I am trying to write a bash script that would save the current state of my konsole terminals and sessions. I'm using KDE3.X and for some reason the "profile" save does not save the current working directories... Anyway, I would like to know if there is an elegant way to obtain the current workdir of each terminal and session ? I've managed to do something with a clever use of DCOP extended functions, but it requires me to start every konsole with the --script option enabled, and I don't want to do that.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to save a workspace so that it automatically opens every time you boot Fedora?
I like having Pidgin, Evolution, VLC, and Transmission open in the 4th workspace all the time. Sorry if this has been asked, I searched and found nothing, and this is the first Linux OS I've ever used!
I've been pulling my teeth out trying to find out a way to automatically save a screenshot to a folder by pressing a hotkey, and append a counter or timestamp to the end of the filename. I found this which works well
import -window root ~/screenshot.png
but I need a way to add a counter so that it doesnt constantly override the same file when I press the hotkey, but will save a new screenshot in the same folder.
I've been looking at bash commands and scripts for the past 3 hours but haven't found it yet, and it seems like it should be an easy task to perform.
I am curious about a particular matter. Recently I have purchased a small plug computer that I will use as a torrent server and networked file storage. The thing is I will attach an external HDD to this linux box. Now I am curious about something. The HDD is powered on while the box works, but once the work is done the disk seems to keep running and does not spin down automatically - even though there is no I/O happening.
My question is whether I should add a script that automatically powers down the HDD after a while of inactivity to save electricity or is it better to keep the disk spinning? How does spinning down a HDD affect its health?
the terminal history does not save commands starting with "./"

View 3 Replies View RelatedI sometimes stick my neck out and provide somewhat detailed, and often risky, "Mr-fix-it" remedies for boot problems. Now, I know it's possible to amend each command with "whatever_command > whatever.txt" in which case it'll place the command output in a file in /home.
But if you're directing someone to run a lot of commands as I did here is it possible to save the output of all commands to a .txt file without amending each command?
Or is it already saved somewhere that I'm not yet aware of? I wouldn't be surprised if the latter were true, I just haven't yet found it
I use webcam with the streamer application. So, to record a video I have to put in terminal something like this:
Code:
streamer -q -c /dev/video0 -f rgb24 -r 24 -t 00:30:00 -o /home/shark/untitled.avi
I know I can use other applications but I have got problems with all except with this. This is really annoying because it is a delay job. So, I am wondering how can I make a script that the terminal will ask me to name the file or even better to ask where to put my file.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI googled around and couldnt find what I was looking for. Maybe I used the wrong search terms, but whatever. I was wondering if there was a possibility to execute a series of terminal commands just by double-clicking an icon. For example, there would be an icon on my desktop, and if I were to doubleclick it, it would execute "cd ~/.wine2" and then "WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine2" wine program.exe".
I realise that most of you will probably go "duh, that's simple" or something similar, but I am extremely new to ubuntu, and dont know my way around yet.
10.04 LTS 64bit How can I setup a script to run in the terminal automatically?Currently I have a script on the desktop that when I double click it brings up a dialog that asks me to Run In Terminal, Display (in gedit), Cancel, or Run. I'd like to get rid of this extra dialog and have the script just run in the terminal.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't open my terminal anymore. I changed a preference under the Title and Command tab in the preferences of the GNOME terminal. I put a custom command instead of the normal shell, but after I closed I realized that under the "When Command Exits" menu, I chose "Close Terminal". This means that the terminal closes automatically as soon as the command is done. After I open, it finishes the command and closes. I was wondering whether there is some way to change the terminal preferences from somewhere else or reinstall the terminal, and I obviously can't use terminal commands.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOne of the first things I do when starting Ubuntu (Netbook Edition) is to open a Terminal (ctrl-alt-T) with three tabs in it (ctrl-shift-T, ctrl-shift-T), one with irssi, one with ipython and one extra with just the commandline. Then I set the titles (F2) of the first two respectively to "irssi" and "ipython".Is there some way to write a script that automatically does all this? Or maybe save this configuration in a profile setting or something?
View 3 Replies View RelatedProblem with use of -hold|+hold on rxvt-unicode (urxvt) v9.09 on ubuntu server. On startup, I'm trying to launch terminal apps in urxvt automatically. E.g:
Code:
"urxvt -e /usr/bin/weechat-curses +hold"
or
Code:

However, -|+hold does not seem to hold the terminal open. There is a flicker of a new window opening & then it's gone. I'm trying to invoke this from .xinitrc (startx-->.xinitrc) and also tried commands from inside awesome wm rc.lua (awful.util.spawn_with_shell("urxvt -hold -e mutt") seem to get same flicker result but closes immediately. I see this error in .xsession-errors, which might be relevant (do I perhaps need to specify the display??).
