Ubuntu :: Is There Simple Phone Dialer For Gnome
Dec 21, 2010
I am trying to get my father to quit using Windows. His only demand is that he be able to have a nice contact manager. Evolution looks like just what he needs, but it seems to be missing one key feature: a phone dialer (don't confuse this with a dial-up Internet dialer or a VOIP applicaiton; those are not what I am looking for). What I want to know is:
1.) Is there a simple phone dialer for Gnome (like Kall for KDE)?
2.) Can it be used with Evolution (or is there an Evolution plugin to do this)?
3.) If there is not way to do this with Evolution, is there another Gnome contacts manager/calendar/task scheduler that has this capability?
I guess if I can't find one, I'll have to go to Kubuntu since it appears to be able to do this with Kontact, but I really prefer Gnome so I would rather not have to do that.

I've bought a Conceptronics CPHONELU (C01-200) VoIP USB phone. I would like to take full advantage of my VoIP phone in Linux. Currently I'm using Sip Communicator as the softphone, but I tried x-lite 3.0 on Windows too. The phone works has like a regular headset, I can hear and speak without a problem. However I cannot take full advantage of the phone, since the phone keyboard only work in Skype through the Skype Portal software that come bundle with the phone (Windows only). Is there a driver that I can use in order to be possible to dial using the phone and display the called ID with a regular softphone?

I'm trying to resolve an issue with a dial up modem and really need some help. I haven't used dial up in many years and not even sure how to approach the problem. Making matters worse, I haven't had a landline phone in years, so am trying to troubleshoot this problem and each time have to take it back to a friend, for whom I have installed Kubuntu 10.04. All works fine on my high speed ethernet and wireless, but I can't get the dial up she needs to work.
The system is a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop. KInfoCenter reports an ATI Technologies SB400 AC'97 Modem Controller. I know the modem hardware is fine, as it was working perfectly when I removed Windows XP and installed Kubuntu 10.04.I tried using KPPP, however KPPP will not let me set the DNS to Automatic...it is grayed out. So, I've installed both wvdialer and Gnome Dialer. Gnome Dialer seemed to set up fine and all user info. number to dial, etc. was set up.The problem is that when a telephone line is connected to the modem and you attempt to dial, no dial tone is detected.I don't know how to approach this, not how to troubleshoot it. I would be happy to provide any logs or output here, if someone can tell me what to do.

I had a hard time finding out how to change -- get to-- the simple scan preferences. There is no batten on the screen to open preferences window. I found two way to change the preferences on simple scan.
1. Easy way:
I found that when you run a program in gnome an icon of that application appears on top bar. If you click on that icon a window will appear and one of the items on that window is preferences, by clicking on that you could open preferences window, and change your preferences.
2. Hard way:
Go to applications and open dconf Editor
then go to org section click on it
then go to gnome section click on it
then go to Simple-Scan click on it
now you can change things

It's installed as a mobile broadband connection. Only works if my phone is plugged in during boot, otherwise plugging in my phone does nothing. For example, I booted my netbook earlier today but my phone wasn't plugged in. Tethering did not work, it just acts as if it isn't present. I rebooted (with my phone still attached) and now tethering magically works.

I have a mobile phone (T68i) attached to my server and everything works fine. But sometimes the phone craches and needs to be rebooted wich is quite annoying. So I want to use a newer phone that is not 10+ years old :-)But when using a K610i or C702 the phone does not appear on /dev/ttyUSB0 as expected. When inserting the usb cable a dmesg gives this:
Code:
[5924924.451033] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 19
[5924924.576728] usb 1-3: New USB device found, idVendor=0fce, idProduct=d0d9

I'm trying to use as few KDE packages as possible in Xfce and yesterday found and installed Chestnut-dialer (./configure, make, make install). When trying to run it as a user it gives the message, "pppd:must be root to run pppd."Apparenty you have to set the pppd UID for root. Once done it will make the connection as user, but you can't "go anywhere." That is the e-mail client, browser, etc., report they are not connected. So far the only way to get it to work is to open a terminal, sign on as root (su) and fire up Chestnut-dialer from the command line.

I am a developer working on an application which needs to dial out via modem. The modem activation/deactivation is done programmatically by the application, which may be running unattended. The online time is billed by the minute at a very high rate so it is imperative that the dialler does its best to terminate a connection whenever signalled to do so by the application.
The preferred means of communication with the dialer would be via DBus, due to design/architectural considerations. The current solution relies on a DBus wrapper around pppd, but it has been found lacking in reliability (leaving connections open from time to time).I have already reviewed some candidates such as wvdial, and network-manager but unfortunately those were unsuitable.

I use Huawei EC1260 modem for mobile broadband connection. What are the command line shell based ppp dialing applications available apart from wvdial? insight how to use pppd/chat directly.Actually wvdial is working on debian very well with this modem. But I need to use it on an arm le based system, where wvdial does not work properly because of setcontext(), getcontext() dependency on arm platforms.

So I can send pictures from my phone to my PC, I've bought a Bluetooth USB adapter, just a cheap one.
System>Preferences>Bluetooth without the adapter says 'no adapters are plugged in'. With the adapter in I get a preferences screen to find new devices, so my PC is seeing the Bluetooth adapter. I've then got it to successfully find both my phone and my wife's and entered the provided pin into each phone. My desktop is duly listed as a device on each phone.
However, if I try and send a picture from either of the phones to the PC the phone says it can't see any devices and the sending fails.
Also, how do I send files the other way, from PC to phone? I installed Obex but it simply hung then closed itself.
