Debian Installation :: Preseed : Keyboard Config Not Taken Into Account?

Jul 7, 2011

I'm trying to automate Squeeze 6 installation with preseed.cfg, but the keyboard configuration (fr) is not taken into account.Given the debconf logs, it seems that the language is set before preseed.cfg is read. So I added "console-keymaps-at/keymap=fr locale=fr_FR" to the syslinux.cfg kernel line. That skips the installer keyboard selection page. But in debconf logs I can seed "Setting debconf/language to en".What am I doing wrong ?Here are the related options I set in preseed.cfg. I can't find an exhaustive debconf options list, and their exact meaning ; does anyone know of one ?d-i debian-installer/locale string fr

# The values can also be preseeded individually for greater flexibility.

Debian Configuration :: Standardizing System Account UID/GIDs To Allow Shared Config

Feb 6, 2010

I run a network with about twenty Debian systems, currently running Etch. I maintain a central passwd and group file, which is regularly copied to each system. This works fairly well, but I have some problems with the system account UIDs and GIDs.

I find different systems often pick different UID and GID values for system accounts like bind, ntp, sshd etc. I think the values chosen at install come from the system UID and GID ranges, and are allocated sequentially, so the values on a system depend on which packages were installed, and the order they were installed in.

Is there any way to specify the UID and GIDs for system accounts at installation time? Are there any other thoughts on how to implement shared passwd and group files (apart from NIS, which I don't want to use)?

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Optus And Dodo Broadband Setup

Mar 13, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire One A110. I was running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope until March 2010 and then upgraded to UNR 9.10 Karmic Koala. I've been using 3G wireless internet, here in Australia, first with Dodo and now with Optus.
Dodo setup
Dodo uses the Optus network.
The modem I have used is a Huawei E169E HSDPA USB Stick (aka "dongle").

For a contract plan, my settings are:
Number: *99#
APN: dodolns1
Authentication: CHAP
DNS servers: 202.136.43.197, 202.136.42.229
All other settings are default and/or blank.

Optus setup (prepaid)
The modem I now use is a Huawei E160E.
For a prepaid plan, my settings are:
Number: *99#
APN: preconnect
Authentication: EAP, CHAP, MSCHAPv2 (it's working like this)
DNS servers: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4
All other settings are default and/or blank.

I have installed UNR 9.10 (fresh install) and then setup my wireless fraudband as follows:
Plug in dongle (some say that it needs to be plugged in when you boot).
Open SystemNetwork Connections.
Select Mobile Broadband tab, Add new connection.
Select Optus and then review and change the settings as required.
Click the network connections launcher at the top of the screen and select Optus to connect.

The most frequent problem I have experienced is DNS servers. I can connect to the wireless network but no pages would load. The Automatic PPP IPv4 setting rarely works for me and I prefer to set the DNS servers manually:
Dodo 202.136.43.197, 202.136.42.229
Optus 192.65.90.202, 202.139.83.3 (maybe out of date?)
Google 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 (works for any internet service provider)

More tips:
For a better signal and more stable connection (but not necessarily faster), I use a 5 metre USB extension and hang the dongle in a window facing the Optus tower (basic extension will do, you don't need the fancy one with a repeater). Sometimes, the modem is not recognized when plugged in (not in the Network Connections) launcher. Be patient, wait a bit, then unplug it and try again. It should be OK the second time.

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Setup A 2nd Ftp Account For Own Private Use

Jan 12, 2010

i followed this guide, [URL] a few days ago and set up an sftp server no problem. The user can only see what is in there home folder which is only the examples file which is empty. Today i went to set up a 2nd ftp account for my own private use. I have it set up and all, followed exactly what he said the 2nd time around and my 2nd user is not chroot'd. I can explor the contents of the whole drive.

My fist user that works fine is "ftpuser" and the group is "sftponly" just like in the guide. My 2nd user is named "ftptaylor". Now i did have an ftp server set up with vsftpd where i had the same ftpuser account in a different group, but it was jailed to /home/ftpuser. I cant tell you how i did it, i followed a number of guides untill one worked. But could it be that the guide above does not in face jail the users, but just that my user was already jail'd?

Ubuntu :: Evolution Mail Won't Allow New Account Setup

I have been using evolution for my email for about a year.It currently has 2 accounts set up.I want to create a third account so I went to Edit > Preferences > Accounts > Add.On the first page I click on "forward" and on the second page enter the new details. New name, new email address and when I'm finished I click on forward again and the second screen comes up. It has some server details on it iirc. Sadly after 2 seconds or so this screen disappears and the very first screen re-appears (where the only thing to click on is "forward").What's happening? Is 2 accounts the maximum? Any clues please?

General :: Setup A Ssh Account With No Terminal But Port Forwarding?

Jan 29, 2011

I am trying to set up a new user account I can give to friends so they can SSH into my forward computer, and only allow forwarding of certain ports.

I do not want my friends to have a shell, or be able to change what ports to where they are allowed to forward.

example session: joe(friend) connects using PuTTY (that I have pre-set, he isn't good with computers) to example.com(my Internet facing computer) forwarding ports 8080,1990,25565 to him(with what ever end ports he wants, preferably they stay the same numbers) example ssh command to do similar (but he can still change the ports on my computer!)

ssh -N restricteduser@example.com -p443 -L8080:192.168.1.2:8080 -L1990:127.0.0.1:1990 -L25565:127.0.0.1:25565

is it possible to also leave default SSH functinality for all other users but this one?

I found this when I was searching google, but alas, I did not quite understand what was being suggested, and I don't think they covered restricting port forwarding

Ubuntu :: Setup A Background Automatic Login Account To Start Wifi And Prey

Dec 24, 2010

If I understand correctly Ubuntu does not allow a wifi connection until a user loges in. That makes it so that prey (see preyproject.com) cannot send notices until someone has logged onto Ubuntu.what I would like to do (but I have no clue how) is to set up a user account that automatically, in the background, logs on at start up. Then this little user login would establish any Internet connection that is possible (wifi or lan) and start the program 'prey'. This should all be totally transparent to the user that would just see the regular log in screen.

Server :: Uninstalling LAMP Components - Various Config Files And Made The Setup Unusable

Mar 22, 2011

I am slowly learning Linux by bringing up a server. Using tasksel, I installed the LAMP-server, which went fine. Now, however, I have mucked about with various config files and made the setup unusable. I'd like to do uninstall all of the LAMP packages and do a clean (and more thoughtful) install. Here's the problem: tasksel returns an "aptitude failed (100)" error. I have search various forums and all of the help related to this error (which I can't actually find *explained* anywhere) is related to installing packages. I tried them anyway, without success. man pages and the stack of manuals I have don't seem to be of much help either.

- describe what the error message means?
- a way to remove the packages or the config files by hand?
