I have failed to install an AT&T Sierra Wireless Aircard 881 on a Compaq 8510p running RHEL5 Server (Linux version 2.6.18-164.9.1.el5,gcc version 4.1.2 20080704, Red Hat 4.1.2-46. )
As seen in the dmesg output below, the OS detects the modem, connects it to ttyUSB0 - ttyUSB3. However, kppp is unable to access the modem.
I have followed Sierra Wireless instructions located at sierra wireless's website. (I would post it, but I've not made enough posts yet to link it in this message.) However, I was not able install the TRU-Install patch. The unusual_devs.h is absent on the machine, so patching was unsuccessful.
I'm stumped on what to try next. Is there a FAQ or guide on how to get a 3G modem running with RHEL5 Server? Ideally, I'd like to find something like the Internet Connection manager on Ubuntu. The modem works on that distro with no problems. I'm not able to migrate due to application and security certification dependencies on RHEL5 Server.
lsusb output:
Bus 009 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 008 Device 002: ID 1199:6851 Sierra Wireless, Inc. AirCard 881 Device
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

It's installed as a mobile broadband connection. Only works if my phone is plugged in during boot, otherwise plugging in my phone does nothing. For example, I booted my netbook earlier today but my phone wasn't plugged in. Tethering did not work, it just acts as if it isn't present. I rebooted (with my phone still attached) and now tethering magically works.

How can I use my computer to record a telephone conversation? I'm not talking about skype or voip; I want to link my 'puter to my standard landline. Here's the scenario: I make occasional programmes for the local community radio station, pre-recording them on my computer, using a fairly decent microphone (via a mixer and pre-amp, feeding into the line-in socket on the sound card). Recording and editing is handled with Audacity, and, despite the hardware being basic stuff, I get pretty good spoken-word audio quality like this.
I want to be able to include telephone interviews with guests, preferably recorded using my mic/mixer setup so that at least my half of the conversation is of the usual studio quality. How can I achieve this? Is a voice modem the thing to use (and if so, could someone walk me through how to use one under Ubuntu, please), or are there other hardware or software solutions? The landline in question is a BT-type here in the UK.

I have a mobile phone (T68i) attached to my server and everything works fine. But sometimes the phone craches and needs to be rebooted wich is quite annoying. So I want to use a newer phone that is not 10+ years old :-)But when using a K610i or C702 the phone does not appear on /dev/ttyUSB0 as expected. When inserting the usb cable a dmesg gives this:
Code:
[5924924.451033] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 19
[5924924.576728] usb 1-3: New USB device found, idVendor=0fce, idProduct=d0d9

I have an old Brooktrout ISDN fax card on BRI used mostly for receiving faxes. It works with windows fax server software which sends faxes to different e-mail boxes according to telephone number on which fax was send.
Since card is getting rather old and I don particulary like server software I wonder has anyone got any practice with linux fax servers. What I need is ISDN fax card and software which is able to save fax as a picture to file and somehow retain telephone number (filename or directory name). Sending picture by email is than trivial task.

What I want to do is to share the internet connected to a computer with a telephone, over another telephone which is permanently connected to the pc.The thing is, that some guys found a way of making this on windows, in fact, I already set it up on xp and works like a charm, it involves configuring in a certain way the telephone,d to use 2 programs. One is CCProxy, which redirects the internet connection to the telephone, and another one, which updates the IP adress of the telephone connection to dyndns, so that I can put that adress on my second telephone as proxy, and this way, surf on the net through my home internet on the telephone anywhere. Tricky right?
Now, the thing is I don't like at all booting windows only for sharing internet with my telephone. So I want to do it in linux. I use Ubuntu and Puppy linux home.I tried setting up the connection to the modem with wvdial, and... I got connected! But hey, when I connect to the telephone, I lost my internet connection (main, cable based, the pc connection) :-S. I mean, somehow, the "active" connection for the browsers and all the internet programs is now the connection I have made with my telephone, which is plugged to the computer. Now my objective here is that NO CHANGE of active connections get done when I start the connection to the phone, and then, get a program like CCProxy, and a dyndns updater for sharing the internet connection on the pc, to the connection made on the telephone-modem wired to the computer.Am I clear? I know it is confusing, and it took me weeks to understand how it works and get it done in windows. But now... Ubuntu is what I want.

So I can send pictures from my phone to my PC, I've bought a Bluetooth USB adapter, just a cheap one.
System>Preferences>Bluetooth without the adapter says 'no adapters are plugged in'. With the adapter in I get a preferences screen to find new devices, so my PC is seeing the Bluetooth adapter. I've then got it to successfully find both my phone and my wife's and entered the provided pin into each phone. My desktop is duly listed as a device on each phone.
However, if I try and send a picture from either of the phones to the PC the phone says it can't see any devices and the sending fails.
Also, how do I send files the other way, from PC to phone? I installed Obex but it simply hung then closed itself.

I've looked around the internet for a few days to try and find a solution but I can't get my LG phone to connect through USB to Ubuntu. I don't know exactly how to mount or how it works.
I tried it with BitPim but my phone is not listed. (I tried other configurations with no success.)

I didn't know that charging via usb for my sony ericsson mobile, w880i actually needs the SE PC Suite to be installed, cos, I used to charge it via usb cable, as mentioned, on my workstation, which is window based, it's kinda insignificant to me that the software has to be installed first.
However, I'm currently on the move, with my newly installed "netbook", I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my twinhead efio 121A (which is good, no compatibility issue) and now, I just figured that, SE PC Suite does not have any linux version, but my mobile is already out of battery, and I desperately need to charge it,
I did run a lsusb, it doesn't seem to detect the phone, neither as usb storage, or as a phone, cos, I saw other people lsusb output, it's an item with "sony ericsson", but my output does not have such item. However, when I plug in the usb cable, it did prompt to ask me to choose between "file transfer" or "phone mode".

Does anybody use or has ever used a Sony Ericsson walkman series phone with Linux? Well I have a C902, it is not walkman but both have many resemblances... Most importantly they both use OS based on JAVA and use the same filesystem (I dunno the name but it is the most common filesystem in cellphones.) hat I need here is suggestions from you, for some software which could do interesting things with my phone!
Take me as a bored guy who wants to do something new and thought it was better idea to connect his cellphone to Linux machine and do crazy things with it... Well. previously, while I was a Windows user, I had Sony Ericsson PC Suite. It was good, really. I could read my text messages through my computer, even make a call, organize my music, browse folders and that kinda stuff... Well I might be looking something in that context then!
