I have a ubuntu 10.10 wubi installation. It is installed to drive g:. While using ubuntu it is not showing me option to mount to this drive. It is showing all other drives.
View 2 RepliesI have a machine running Ubuntu 9.10 that has an external HD with shared folders music folder and media downloads folder). I have set up SAMBA on that machine.
On my laptop I am running a dual boot system with Windows Vista and using wubi install, Ubuntu 9.10.
In Windows, I am able to wirelessly connect to the shared folder and access the music folder and the media downloads folder on my Desktop Ubuntu machine. All is good.
When I boot in Ubuntu, I am unable to connect to the shared folder under Places > Network I can negotiate to the MSHOME (the name of my work group). Once selected I get the error Failed to retrieve Shared List from server error message.
I have installed a 2TB drive in my dual PIII 866 with 750MB ram. The drive is properly installed and I have configured the drive with 1 partition in RAID1. The array loads fine, but when I add the entry to mount the /dev/md2 /data/repository the following error occurs The filesystem size according to the superblock is 488378000 blocks The physical size of the device is 488377986 blocks Either the superblock or partition table is likely corrupt I have run fsck manually with no errors reported. I have removed the partition and rebuilt the array. The array assembles properly and I can manually mount the /dev/md2, but as soon as I add the entry to the fstab I get dropped to a shell after a reboot. Not sure where to go now?

What exactly is meant my this? Does this mean it is an easier way to install the dual boot with Windows? (I am using Windows-7 on a new PC.) Or does it mean it will install Ubuntu under Windows? I assumed it meant the latter.
In any case, I downloaded it - a mere 1024K, scanned it and ran it. I get a stubborn error box with the message:

And that box will not go away - no matter what I press, including the [X] button in the upper corner, the box reappears. I had to go into Process Explorer to kill pyrun.exe and its parent, pyl5E39.tmp.exe before the [Cancel] button would close it for good.
I could not find doc on this so I don't know what it really wants as a prerequisite to running wubi.
I installed ubuntu by WUBI on windows...now i want to read and write on my windows drive where ubuntu is installed... but i want to view other things like the softwares installed in windows.
View 3 Replies View RelatedQuick background: I've always had problems with Ubuntu on my external hard drive, but I think it's actually with grub in Gnome - any Gnome. I had Karmic installed until after grub upgraded and a bootloader error made it impossible to log in, so I went over to PCLOS KDE.
I've missed Ubuntu and really wanted Lucid, so I tried reinstalling it to the external. Same problem. I tried PCLOS Gnome, and, yep, same - though I could reinstall the KDE version no problem. Anyway, after umpteen attempts, which included formatting the external drive in Windows (which doesn't ever recognise the external in My Computer till I do), letting Ubuntu do the partitioning, doing the partitioning myself, I finally tried to install through Windows via Wubi - still to the external drive.
It failed, and now the drive is not recognised in the BIOS, Ubuntu, or Windows (I've now installed a dual Ubuntu-Windows boot on my internal). Have I stuffed up my external drive? Is there some way I can make it recognisable (changing BIOS settings???). Do I need to supply more information?
I used Wubi to do the install and pointed it to D drive because it was basically free except for itunes... anyway, once it had finished, I turned off my laptop, turned it back on and it showed Windows and Ubuntu, I loaded Ubuntu and it said it was continuing installation, anyway it said copying files, and stuff and I didn't know if it was overwriting vista so it would go on the C drive instead of the D drive. Anyway, I just want Ubuntu on D and Vista on C. Is Ubuntu gonna' overwrite Vista?

I just switched to Fedora (from Ubuntu) and can't seem to get Fedora to automount my old drive (which is my old Ubuntu drive). I tried the following with no luck (in fact, when I did this, it chocked during boot and went into emergency mode:
In /etc/fstab, I entered:
/dev/sdc /media/UBUNTU_DRIVE defaults 0 0
Another odd thing is the UBUNTU_DRIVE directory just disappears after reboot (and I know it was there before rebooting).
I have two additional drives in my tower, and both do show up in gparted, so I'm not sure why they're not getting mounted.
Why can't Fedora auto mount secondary (internal drives) automatically?
What can I do to tell it to auto mount the secondary drives (I have two) automatically?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04 using Wubi. Everything works well, but randomly while I am working my screen will go black and say out of range or no signal. My monitor is a Planar, I have resolution and refresh rate set at factory specs and most of the time it is clear and working well. It seems to be completely random, sometimes it happens while surfing the web, other times I am using gimp, and sometimes I am not near the PC at all. I assume the problem is also the reason I can not use Compiz as well. (Graphics card is a intel 845).

Althoughwhen I boot and choose linux I get an error message during boot which stays forever. I have to shut down using power button and start again when it boots fine.
Another problem is when I restart from ubuntu it restarts back to the desktop but when I shut down, it does not shut down the computer. Stays on with blank screen forever. I am attaching the image of latest error I received on boot.
I am installing Ubuntu 10.04 server on a box with no optical drive, using a USB pen drive created using Ubuntu's Startup Disk Creator. Installation works just fine. However, instead of installing the MBR/grub2 on the hard drive it is installing it on the usb pen drive - i.e., I can't boot without the pen drive being the bootable device. I tried 'grub-install -root-directory=/boot /dev/sdb', but that didn't work.
I then tried 'apt-get purge grub-common' and then 'apt-get install grub-common'. There is a known bug where it tells you that there is no bootloader installed and do you want to continue without one Y/N - N just sends you straight back to the same dialog instead of installing. I'm not interested in recovering as it's a brand new install - easier just to redo it correctly from the start. So the question is this: how can I install from a USB pen drive and have the bootloader install properly?

I just finished installing lucid lynx netbook to my jump drive (full install) to save room on my hard drive. It's working fine except the bootloader was installed to the jump drive as well, meaning I can't boot my computer without the jump drive. Is there any way to correct it so that the computer boot from the hard drive while keeping my install on the jump drive?

Therefore, I bought an external USB SATA Hub for my laptop's drive, but I can't seem to be able to boot ubuntu from this drive. I'm trying to boot with this external usb hub attached to an old P4 machine with USB booting enabled.I get till the grub screen, but as soon as the message "Grub loading" appears, I get a message saying:error: no such partitionand I get a prompt as follows:grub-rescue>I guess grub is trying to boot to a different device name... It's weird, I thought Ubuntu should boot irregardless of which interface I use, be it SATA or USB.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a system with two hard drives: an old one with XP and Ubuntu on it, and a new one on which I have done a fresh install of XP. The BIOS is set to boot off the new drive. I have now installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04(off an alternate install disc, not a live CD)onto a partition on the new drive. The installation went fine, but it appears to have written the GRUB bootloader to the old disc. The result is that when I boot up, the system boots straight into XP off the new drive, without ever seeing GRUB. I could reset the boot order in the BIOS each time I boot according to which OS I want, but that is cumbersome; also I would like to be able to remove the old drive at some point.
What is the easiest way for me to re-install GRUB to the new disc ?
So I JUST installed 10.04 on a new hard drive for the third time. I had it completely wipe the hard drive and install ubuntu itself (so i couldn't mess anything up). Well NOW it won't even boot up ubuntu much less my windows hd.
So the setup is, my first harddrive which is 640gb and has my windows on it, and then my second harddrive which is 80gb and has my freshly installed ubuntu 10.04 on it. Neither will load. I don't even get a loading screen, I just get a flashing line after my mobo's splash screen.

Upon installation of Ubuntu a while back, i was using a windows xp machine with two different harddrives. Instead of formatting the xp drive and installing Linux, i decided to install Linux on the secondary harddrive. This worked all fine and dandy until recent, when I have found my linux drive filling up near capacity. I would like to format the XP harddrive and mount it in linux to give some more disk space. The problem i have found, is that the XP drive is the drive with GRUB.

It takes a good minute and a half to boot to the Plasma desktop and it even seems to run faster off of the LiveCD.His system easily meets the specifications to run Kubuntu (4 gigs of RAM, decent NVIDIA graphics card) yet it slows to a crawl immediately upon booting. Does anyone know how to fix this? The hard drive is a Western Digital MyBook, 475GB model.
