Ubuntu Installation :: Recent Update Breaks Remote Control?
Jul 17, 2011
My mythbuntu 10.10 system including its lirc managed remote control has been working fine.I've recently done some updates (see below) and now the remote doesn't work correctly (only some of its keys seem to work). I suspect that lirc is no longer managing the remote and now instead the remote is now being treated like a keyboard. How do I get lirc managing my remote control correctly again,Before the updates the kernel was:
Code:
$ uname -a
Linux pvr 2.6.35-28-generic-pae #50-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 18 20:43:15 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux
[code].....

It seems that updating the Kernel breaks my installation. I've tried it twice, and both times it disabled my gui desktop. I'm posting this with links2 in my terminal. The terminal works perfectly.
This is really annoying, as I can't even use my computer. What do you think is the problem?

I did an update during a time when power was cycling due do a nasty snow storm, but I'm pretty sure the update was completed successfully before I lost power. What did happen though is that my BIOS setup was reset.
Now if my HP Laserjet 1020 is plugged into USB during boot all other USB devices freeze for a while. So I played with my BIOS setting for USB:
- Enabled V1.1 and V2.0
- Disabled System USB Shadowing
So now my bootup doesn't hang. But now when I actually go into Karmic I still can't print.
dmesg shows the following:
[ 205.940008] usb 1-10: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9
[ 219.510026] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 10
[ 223.430008] usb 1-10: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 10

I have this strange problem on ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, that when running update-grub, it will only put the oldest kernel into the grub menu, despite the fact that I have recent kernels around as well.
in particular:
Code:
# update-grub
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Searching for default file ... found: /boot/grub/default
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
[code]...
I'd like to see the most recent kernels in the grub menu, with the most recent being on top.

RE: Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 64bit Updates from 2-3 days ago.
Since then, Firefox starts and runs fine the first time. Close it down and later try to restart, error says that Firefox is already using that profile and will need to quit it before proceeding.
System Monitor then shows that firefox and firefox-bin are still loaded (although nothing in the gnome app tray at bottom of screen). Jill those 2 processes and Firefox loads normally.
Should I wait this out and see if later updates cure this? Reinstall Firefox? Submit a report to launchpad?

Firefox 3.6 "Namoroka" stopped working after a recent update. Clicking on my panel launcher or the launcher in the applications menu does nothing. I even tried starting Firefox from the terminal and got an error message: "(firefox-bin:3592): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple times", whatever that means.I would be willing to rip out Firefox and start all over again but I don't know how to remove the 3.6 version. I couldn't find a method in the Software Center for doing that graphically.

Canon cameras used to come with a piece of software called remote capture for Windows and MacOS.
You plug in the camera via USB, and then the camera display is on your monitor. From there you can do everything your camera does, like taking pictures of video. Does anyone know if there is linux equivalent software that can do this?
I have found this software, but new cameras aren't supported.

I've just upgraded my web/tv setup from 9.10 to lucid and everything seems to be working apart from my infra red remote control. The remote was working fine in 9.10 and was used to control mythtv-frontend however after the upgrade the remote appears to be controlling ubuntu natively, i.e. right left up and down control what is selected on the desktop where as previously the remote was set to only work within mythtv. Whilst native support for my remote control is muchly appreciated(if that is what this is) where can I configure the controls so that it is usable again?

When I start the X server, my touchpad works for about 5-6 seconds (I'm moving it around to test). After the X server fully loads (and all the software loads in, I presume), the touchpad mouse promptly stops working. I can no longer use the GUI because the mouse is dead.
This seems to be a software bug after the latest update. Is there any way I can regress to a previous version? Perhaps uninstall the recently updated software?

I updated my server (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) today and had about 23 updates in Webmin. After the update suddenly apache doesn't render php pages anymore, instead letting you download the source code for the scripts. I checked the logs and found this:
Code: Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.load: Cannot load /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so into server: /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I tried reinstalling php5 but I can't get it to work. I also hope that this was a glitch and that updates that break stuff like this don't get through QA.

I think a recent update has broken 2 of the 3 systems that I've been putting together. To test out the theory I want to roll libpam-modules back to version 1.1.1-2ubuntu2 from 1.1.1-2ubuntu5 that was recently released on 1 of the 2 that got updated and see if it resolves the issue that I'm seeing with not being able to log into the OMSA webserver. How do I go about reverting to the earlier version?

I've done my due diligence, but I'm tired and frustrated so my googlefu probably isn't up to par at the moment! Been running Ubuntu as my main OS for about a year now, and have been really happy with it. So far I've been able to find solutions to every problem I've had, but I think this one's got me a bit out of my depth. I REALLY don't want to have to reinstall, I'm currently running Lucid as the only OS on this machine, and about an hour ago I installed the most recent updates as provided by the update manager. On reboot, it stopped at a GRUB command line.
I've managed to boot back into Ubuntu by manually loading the linux module etc. and booting. From there I've tried updating grub, and reinstalling grub (No errors on reinstall) but nothing persists. I've taken a quick look at the grub.cfg, but TBH I'm not sure what I'm looking for! [edit] FWIW, I have GRUB 1.981ubuntu7 installed

I recently added a repository to my package manager to allow me an installation of firefox 4.0. This worked, and when I ran a recent update, my package manager also updated my firefox 3.6 to a nightly build, as well as my thunderbird email application. What's worse is, it changed around all my icons and names, so now it uses the code name of the version (Namaroka, instead of firefox...) I'm sure this is great for developers, but I just want it to be normal. how I can step back with the update I did?

I've been running ubuntu on multiple computers for about 8 months now, installed on one computer as it's only OS (XP ran too slowly), and as a side OS for two others, one running XP and one running 7.The problem is, Ubuntu recently stopped booting on my Windows 7 computer. The option shows at start-up, but when I select it, the computer restarts back to the boot menu. I had recently installed an update from Update Manager that required a Restart, so when I restarted it to finish installing I left it to have dinner and it restarted into windows.About a day later, I wanted to boot ubuntu again, but my computer simply restarted, and has been doing this since (it's been about 3 days). I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but the last thing I installed before the update was a 1st person shooter game, I can't remember the name, but the icon was a "ka" symbol in katakana.

I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.

Code:

* /dev/null is not a character device!

Today, I installed the recent kernel security update (i.e. 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP). After a reboot, the sound is gone.
From my user account:
mpc@awd:~$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
Same problem with "aumix".
However, the commands "sudo alsamixer" and "sudo aumix" seem to work (but still no sound).
"lsmod | grep snd" will give
snd_hda_codec_atihdmi 2367 1
snd_hda_codec_realtek 203310 1
snd_hda_intel 21941 0

At some point in the last week, my webcam on 10.10 64bit mysteriously stopped working. The OS no longer recognises it as being there. It's an internal cam on a Clevo laptop and before this it's always worked perfectly.
Is there a way I can force the OS to recognise it? Or find out what broke it and fix it?

After recent upgrade which contained the newer kernel ( 2.6.35-30-generic). I've started to experience problems with sound and video in programs - deadbeef and totem. Both of them dont play any sounds and video in totem is skipping every 3-4 seconds (the same applies to flash videos in browser).
As I run deadbeef from the command line I dont get any significant information. I run ubuntu 10.10 amd 64. I tried to reinstal gstreamer my programs and codecs with no luck.

I just updated my kernel to the latest version (2.6.35-24). Now my suspend function on my Thinkpad SL510 no longer works. The system simply hangs with a solid cursor in the corner of a black screen. USB devices remain powered on, HDD keeps spinning, and all indicator lights remain lit. When this happens, the only thing I can do is hold the power button down for a hard power off.My first thought would be to troubleshoot this with dmesg, but I don't know how to record dmesg after a power off. The message buffer is reset when I reboot.

I updated my fedora 12 GNOME installation. Now Compiz fusion is not working. It says Accelerated 3D support not found. Though Nvidia drivers are already installed. Now I can't even ALT+TAB between open applications.
I tried "metacity -- replace" but then windows wore a weird look with only a minimize button. No sign of maximise & close buttons.

I updated last night and after a reboot I can get the GDM login but as my desktop loads it suddenly stops and complains of an error and won't load. If I load legacy Gnome desktop with Compiz it loads but ALL the lettering and words on the interface are messed up. By this I mean the letters are upside down and the words are spelt backwards. The mouse menus also work in reverse as in the menus themselves are also upside down and the highlighting moves from bottom to top as I move down the menu. Amusing but not what I want from my computer. There is nothing in /var/log/messages or /var/log/Xorg.0.log that would indicate anything is wrong.
I sooo don't want to have to rebuild, again, because of instabilities in F15 updates.

I just got a set of updates from Xorg11 (Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.1/i586) repository and now, my X doesn't come up. During update, zypper complained about xorg-x11-libxcb and it didn't get updated. On further investigation I noticed that libxcb-xlib.so.0.0.0 is missing in the new package (version 7.4-4.2. The one currently installed in 7.4-1.24).

I have an EEE 1000 that successfully connected to WPA networks until yesterday. I tried re-installing the RT2860 drivers that had been previously modified and did not have success.
Additionally, I just installed 10.04 on a Gateway laptop that's a few years old. It immediately connected to the WPA network and I ran the updater. Lo and behold, after updating it no longer connects to the network.
