Since I upgraded Gnash: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=115357 I can't upgrade anything. At least I think that's when it started.
In Aptitude, I have 176 "packages being automatically held in their current state", and 47 "packages being held back". When I updated the package list, there was a dozen or so lines that were yellow instead of green, but it ran too fast for me to read. I doubt that is important, but I try to give as much info as possible.
I tried to install my ATI propertary driver and it says
E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages
I have held broken packages and it wont download/install the driver :S what should i do?
I have had a similar problem before i think, also when i used peppermint i couldnt install my driver, but forget it i like ubuntu the best....could this happen because i clicked skip during some parts of the installation of ubuntu?
I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.
I'm trying to update my Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10... But I get this error message:pkgProblemResolver:Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages
I tried to disable all the repositories, and also "sudo apt-get -f"... But still having this error message...
I was using Synaptic to remove unwanted sound & audio programs...it seemed to take out other files that were non-related ?
(1) Now apt-get complains about a "Held Package" and doesn't tell me the pkg name.
(2) Synaptic is broken...error..E: The value 'stable-updates' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
stable-updates isn't even in my sources list. I've purged synaptic, and re-installed but remains broken. When you close error msg synaptic disappears ? Therefore can't use synaptic at all.
(3) apt-get says many packages that were available are no longer available...like one of the main repos has disappeared ?
(4) I put the same repos that are working for my brother who is running Debian Jessie also, but didn't improve the number of missing available packages.

How or why things have gone so wrong from just removing unwanted sound pkgs.
To recap problems...apt-get held pkg....broken synaptic....unavailable pkgs.
I've found myself using Ubuntu more recently because of newer packaged apps, so I finally decided I'd upgrade my laptop and desktop”each amd64—to Squeeze, instead of starting a bunch of apt-pinninng. I started with the laptop, which despite my preparations is now broken.
KDE 4.3 squeeze-SID I've got a strange problem with my last "aptitude safe-upgrade". It had removed all my kde 4.3 and packages I have installed, I don't know why!
This is what aptitude removed : $ dpkg -l | grep ^rc |awk '{print $2}' | xargs echo .....
I reinstalled kde-full (kde 4) but now with an aptitude safe-upgrade or dist-upgrade. It wants to remove my debian-multimedia keyrings and my wine-unstable and others each time.
# aptitude -s safe-upgrade Les NOUVEAUX paquets suivants vont etre installs : <<<<<<<<< #new packages will be installed libparted0debian1{a} libva1{a} libx264-92{a} libxklavier16{a} mysql-server-core-5.1{a} Les paquets suivants seront ENLEVES : <<<<<<<< # packages will be remove .....
I am new to Debian (just used Gentoo until now), I run a little server for our company and clients. Unfortunately our hosting company switched us from a Gentoo system to a Debian Lenny box with Confixx and stopped maintaining it. So I will need to do the house keeping, which worries me a bit. Today I started and ran: aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade and got a huge list with packages to upgrade. Unfortunately, I am not confident, if I will break something upgrading (Confixx, apache) as I get the following warning message:
WARNING: untrusted versions of the following packages will be installed! Untrusted packages could compromise your system's security. You should only proceed with the installation if you are certain that this is what you want to do. mysql-client mysql-server-5.1 mysql-client-5.1 mysql-common mysql-server-core-5.1 mysql-server libmysqlclient16 Do you want to ignore this warning and proceed anyway? Is it safe to ignore it and upgrade the needed packages?
Today I ran aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade Like I regularly do, and I see these two packages need to be upgraded: login passwd
Since these packages seem kinda security-sensitive I would like to know exactly why I would need to upgrade them. I checked Debian's security list but couldn't find anything relevant, and the links to the changelog for both packages are broken: The requested URL /changelogs/pool/main/s/shadow/shadow_4.1.4.2+svn3283-2+squeeze1/changelog was not found on this server. Where can I see what is changed in these packages so I can safely upgrade?
I just did an update on my Debian system and it was very long. I'd like to know now, after the upgrades have already been applied, which packages were upgraded and which were not.
On Debian repo I found virtualbox-ose packages there. What will be the difference in operation/function between their packages and the packages download on virtualbox.org website?
I am working on a project which targets both 32 and 64 bit architectures at the moment. My system is amd64. I added i386 architecture using this guide. However, my problem is
Code: Select allapt-get install package-name:i386
prompts the removal of currently installed packages (amd64 arch.) which is the problem.
Code: Select allReading package lists... Done Building dependency tree    Reading state information... Done The following extra packages will be installed:  libportaudio0:i386
[Code] ...
Some of the packages I am talking about are
-libegl1-mesa-dev:i386 -libportaudio-dev:i386
Now, as of now, I want to carry out the compilation using 32 bit libraries, however, I really don't want to install 64bit version of all prerequisites each time I switch the compilation from 32 bit to 64. Is there any way to have both architectures at the same time?
I resarted it and put in the disc and held the option/alt key. It came up with the options Macintosh HD then a few seconds later it had a CD images and said "Windows" i laughed then went to it It started with a black screen the said ISO linux then a name and went to a flashing under score thing then the white flashing underscore disapeared... Then it was just a black screen. I waited for mabye 2 or 3 minutes then held my power button and shut down and tried agian same thing happend but this time after the underscore my computer just shutdown. Im trying to RUN (not install....yet) on my macbook from a CD-r CD...in disc utility it said it burn successfully.
I'm writting a program that uses a USB webcam. Sometimes the program crashes and exits, but sometimes it crashes and becomes a zombie process, which I can't kill even with -9/-KILL signal. When that happens, all access to th USB webcam is totally interrupted and all attempts to communicate with it fail.I'm looking for a way to either force this process to terminate or to at least make it release the webcam so I can use it again. So far, the only way I've found to regain control of the camera is to reboot
I have not been able to upgrade any of my 9.10 karmic packages for about a week now. I have attempted to do so using both the Update Manager Gnome tool and the terminal command "sudo apt-get upgrade". Using the terminal command gives me (at the end of the resulting process) the following:
"dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: " syntax error: unknown group 'Debian-exim' in statoverride file "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)"
I ran sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade . It says that 3 packages are not upgraded. Thet are linux-generic, linux-image-generic and linux-headers generic. I have never had this problem when using sudo apt-get dist-upgrade since it is supposed to resolve all conflicts and other issues with upgrades. Can anyone tell me how I can upgrade those three packages?
I have been running Ubuntu on my laptop since 9.10 by itself (not dualbooting Windows). I had no problems with it back then but I did notice that when I upgraded, not all the packages installed and I would get an error message saying so. I never thought much of it. The problem became apparent when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.4, I would get an error message everytime and the upgrade would be cancelled. This forced me to reinstall Ubuntu for both 10.04 and 10.10. As soon as I downloaded 10.10 I downloaded docky and chromium. Heres where my current problems arise:
- Docky (which worked in 10.04) wont work even after I download compiz. - Every time I update the system, if i try to update chromium or anything else from google it cancels the upgrade. - I tried using "sudo apt-get upgrade" in the terminal but I get "Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened."
I'm a bit confused with this: When I log on a server it says 6 packages can be upgraded. When I run apt-get upgrade though it says that 0 upgraded, 0 new installed, 0 uninstalled and 3 cannot be upgraded. Occasionally, when there are indeed more updates available than those 6 packages, upgrade works fine. I believe the server is up-to-date. Why is that?
Just did apt-get update then apt-get upgrade then apt-get install linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic fdutils linux-doc linux-tools Now at: Linux 2.6.32-31-generic on an x86_64. But upon console login after rebooting into the new kernal:

Why would Ubuntu insist there are so many updates available when neither apt-get nor synaptic seem to find anything to upgrade???
I am trying to update all the packages for 5.4 without going to 5.5, I believe I saw at one point instructions on how to do this, where I could in effect cap the version to stay on 5.4. Doing 'yum update' takes me to 5.5.
I have a security cam watched by a computer with Motion. on that computer i use hdparm -S 240 /dev/hdb to stop the harddrive where the pictures go from running when not used (witch is usually 2 days in a row). Now when motion is detected, the first 3 or 4 pictures are saved, and then there is a pauze for about 5 sec. before the next picture. This has to do with the hard-disk spinning up (I tried without), but I don't understand why not more pictures are held in memory until the disk is ready. how to solve this without having the disk running all days?, or what i should start reading
