Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Use Sky2 Driver After 11.04 Upgrade
May 3, 2011
I am having problems with sky2 (eth0 driver) periodically disconnecting since in upgraded to 11.04 so i loaded the sk98lin driver (from the Marvell site) and it worked well (sk98lin was the loaded driver in the net config info dialog) until i had to do a reboot and when it came back up i was on sky2 again. I did the install option of the driver installation and it showed sk98lin as the installed driver when i checked the config info prior to the reboot. Now when i try to reinstall it i get the following results and sky2 is listed as the driver rather than sk98lin.
root@david-desktop:/home/david/Desktop/DriverInstall# bash ./install.sh
Installation script for sk98lin driver.
Version 10.87.3.3 (Feb-01-2011)
[code]....
Is the "installation" option the correct way to do the driver install or do I have to use the "patch" option for it to be permanent?
I have been using ubuntu for a while to be exact 8.10. I love using ubuntu and more importantly wishes to upgrade to the latest version. But for some reason my usb and touchpad mouse drivers are not working in any versions after 8.10. My laptop is think pad r51, an old one. I want to upgrade and continue using ubuntu, but cant due to mouse drivers...
After upgrading kernel package to 2.6.32-5 NVIDIA installation gave me ERROR:Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s), or NVIDIA GPU installed in this system is not supported by this NVIDIA Linux graphics driver release.
I am trying to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10. I have never had a problem upgrading before with the Update Manager. Now I get an error message when using the Update Manager. The message says, "Could not calculate the upgrade". See screenshots. I also checked the package manager for broken packages and came up with nothing.
I was running 10.10 with an Nvidia Quadro FX1500 and was able to get the effects (Compiz) working after following the manual driver install (found here) and editing my xorg.conf file. After this upgrade, Xserver (my desktop) wouldn't even launch. It just kept going into a terminal for log in. Not bad - better than not being to do anything at all. I removed all my nvidia drivers
Code: sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-* and then created a new xorg.conf file (and later moved to /etc/X11) using
Code: Xorg -configure
That now allows me to log in to my desktop. However - no Unity. I've read that some people have had luck with the Nvidia 173 drivers, but not here. When I downloaded the current nvidia driver for my card (Quadro FX 1500) from nvidia, and went to install it manually using (from the directory where the download is)
Code: sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-270.41.06.run
Eventually, it errors out with this: The compiler used to compile the kernel (gcc4.4) does not exactly match the current compiler (gcc4.5). For the record, I can't boot from a thumb drive ("boot error") or CD (both were created and tested on a Windows 7 machine.)
I want to use my video card, but after upgrade i got this message:
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
will be apreciaTED, after running from terminal I got this
CODE: rey@rey-desktop:~$ sudo nvidia-xconfig [sudo] password for rey: Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf". Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup' New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
My Upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS freez on xserver driver. Error message:

I need a quick answer if possible, is it better to remove the proprietary drivers before upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10? Or should i have the open source drivers installed? A clean install is not an option on this machine.
Each time after boot up from hibernation I see notification that "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode". I tried to solve the problem as usual but this time I can not resolve it.I haven't expected this problem on new boot or restart. I suppose that the problem is in incorrect video driver or something else.Could you please share your experience how to resolve my problem? How can I upgrade video driver for GMA 3150 supporting?
I've just installed Lucid Lynx on both my machines in the interest of sitting and waiting for the Unity/Gnome 3 storm to blow over. On the HP (see below), everything works great, and I've followed instructions online on how to upgrade to LibreOffice, upgrade the kernel to 2.6.38 using the kernel PPA, etc.
However, on the IBM, I'm using Nvidia proprietary graphics drivers. These work well on the stock kernel that 10.04 installed (2.6.32-32), but installing 2.6.38 seems to break the driver. If I install the driver first, and then the kernel on top, X stops working and I have to revert to the default, generic driver to get back in. Once there, I cannot install the driver again. The Additional Drivers dialog goes through the motions, but then drops a "systemerror: installarchives() failed" error message.
So, is there a different version of the driver I should be trying to install? I should clarify at this point I tried all three options the Additional Drivers dialog provided me, all gave the same result (version 96, version 173, and version current).
Or should I leave the kernel at 2.6.32? Is there any downside to leaving it?
I upgraded to Lucid last night, and I'm getting this error when I try to run virtualbox-ose:
Quote: Kernel driver not installed (rc=-190 Please install the virtualbox-ose-dkms package and execute 'modprobe vboxdrv' as root. I try it, then I get: Quote: modprobe vboxdrv FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found.
I have no idea what's going on. Can anyone help? The version of virtualbox is 3.1.6-dfsg-2ubuntu2
I have just run a fresh install of Kubuntu on an old PC to try it out for a few weeks. The Boot CD works fine and there is a GUI for the install. It seems to detect all the devices without a hitch. But when the PC reboots it boots into command line. When I try to run startx it gives me "AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0"I looked up the x.org website and in the FAQ Here it says "This kind of problem typically occurs when you're using a big monitor with an old graphics card. You can solve it by deleting some of the highest resolutions of the deepest colour mode in the Screen section of your xorg.conf, or even the whole last Display subsection."I am using an old pc with old graphics card with a 25inch HP LP2465 monitor. in my /etc/X11 there is only a xorg.cof.failsafe file. anyone any ideas on how to do this. The full error is attached in a very bad screenshot.
i tried to upgrade my geforce fx5700 driver. After upgrading i cant login. Before the login screen appears there is a black screen and when i type it writes first "^[[4~" and then i can write and nothing happens. I have two options in the bootloader : Fedora (2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12x86_64) and Fedora (2.6.31.5-127.fc12x86_64). I am afraid to kill the second konfig.
I recently upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 on my x86_64 system. The upgrade went fine except it cannot load the driver for my Matrox M9148. ("m9x")I simply get a "Cannot load driver" error. (there is more to it, will paste when I finish work)Basically the driver is there and in place, it loads it but cannot use it.When I go to reinstall the driver again manually, it dies with an error only supports Xorg up to 7.5So, now I see this is an Xorg and driver compat issue.I have reported it to Matrox and am awaiting a reply.
In the mean time though, since I need my machine working, is there anyway around the issue, or could I even roll back xorg to whatever it was in 10.04 to get the drivers working again?
i have installed ubuntu on my toshiba satellite-L640 and i m facing some problem 1. unable to activate broadband STA wireless driver by additional driver option.. 2. unable to activate ATI/AMD propreitary FGLRX graphics driver by additional driver option.. 3.my laptop doesnt show battery indication that how much charge is left 4.headphone not working 5.sound of vedios and song is very less in ubuntu then windows..
I recently reinstalled Debian on my desktop to migrate to 64-bit. Everything was working swimmingly before but I've encountered a bizarre error i have never seen before. After installing the Nvidia driver and rebooting when X comes up it complains it cant find any screens. However, if I kill X and start it again it starts with no issues. I also have an odd message at startup which might be part of the problem as well.I'm running Debian Testing AMD64 with and Nvidia 9800 GTX+. I compiled 2.6.27.8 for the install.
For what its worth the Nvidia module is showing up for lsmod so I don't really know what is wrong. I have tried reinstalling the nvidia driver as well which didn't help. The error message during bootup is:
last month i had ubuntu 9.04 on my pc but i formated and i install 9.10 then i formatted again with windows xp and now i want to install again the 9.10..but when i try to install at the boot ubuntu docent boot up also fedora(12),opensuse and ubuntu 9.10 but with ubuntu 9.04 everything is ok..i try to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 using update manager but when i restart my pc ubuntu doesn't boot up?
I'm currently trying to upgrade to 10.04, but I'm experiencing a problem. Currently I am encountering the following error message when trying to upgrade: "An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist."
The message directed me to /var/log/dist-upgrade. I looked at the apt.log file and I discovered the following at the end of the file:
"Investigating ubuntu-desktop Package ubuntu-desktop has broken Depends on libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio Considering libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio 2 as a solution to ubuntu-desktop 0
I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 Alternate CD and tried to upgrade 8.04 to 10.04. When I run upgrade (with the option "Include latest updates from the Internet?" set to "No" ) in the "Setting new software channels" it gives this error (ScreenShot attached):
Code:
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (upgraded from 9.10) and I can't find a way to upgrade to the new 10.04.1 version. I've updated all the software sources, changed my country location to US, and even generated a new sources.list file, but my update manager never displays an option to make an upgrade to 10.04.1
Here are my current settings:
Code: ###### Ubuntu Main Repos deb http://pt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main restricted universe multiverse ###### Ubuntu Update Repos deb http://pt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-security main restricted universe multiverse
when I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 I lost the ability to enable effects, lost the ability to use compiz and my screen got messed up and my video card driver wasn't working forcing me to re-install it several times. Even now my system doesn't totally work how it used to in 10.04.I want to avoid that in this upgrade. I downloaded the live cd since the wire upgrade took a bunch of hours. But my concern is the graphics, I want to be able to use effects since Unity uses effects, I have unity 2d installed but it doesn't work. So somehow enabling effects is a must.
what steps do I take to make the upgrade process as smooth as possible, I've already done my app updates so my system is current, I'll disable 3rd party ppa's like before but what else? Do I have to disable my video card driver so the live cd video card driver can be installed? How do I keep my setting as is but allow for all the 11.04 goodness to be installed?Or is erasing my current Ubuntu partition and reinstalling 11.04 fresh the best option?
I am running Lucid Lynx on a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. Every time I try to upgrade to 11.10 (via the Update Manager) I get the below listed errors. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have been unable to find a driver for my nvidia geforce2 mx400. It's running in failsafe graphics mode. Does anyone know what I need to do to make it work? I'm a linux beginner, so please avoid jargon.
Since 9.10 was available, I've been unable to upgrade to the next distribution. Today I actually took the time to copy down and make note of the error given. The pop-up error is this: Could not calculate the upgrade
I just upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. Everything seemed to go well and it looks like everything transfered over fine except my email stuff. I was using Evolution with 9.10, but it looks like none of that is on 10.04. Not too worried about the program itself, but I would like to have kept my contacts info and a few of the emails from the last couple of days.
Upgrade from Karmic - was using EasyBCD in Vista. Tried upgrading to Grub2, reinstalling Grub - but can not boot to either. Here is my Results.txt file from [URL]
Code:

I upgraded to 10.10, and grub just came back with "no wubildr", and then a "no other mode", or something like that. I dual boot xp (I used it to install wubi), and I need a few files off my linux partition. Is there a way to:recover my files within windows skip grub and go strait to ubuntu
