Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Upgrade To The Next Distribution?
Apr 30, 2010
Since 9.10 was available, I've been unable to upgrade to the next distribution. Today I actually took the time to copy down and make note of the error given. The pop-up error is this: Could not calculate the upgrade

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-27-generic. When I run the Upgrade Manager, the 'Distribution Upgrade' window pops up and in bold letters reads 'Running partial upgrade'.
The next line reads '>Preparing to upgrade' and sits there. Mean while, the process begins to perform a great deal of constant hard drive activity. The window's horizontal activity bar reads 'Calculating the changes' at the bottom of the 'Distribution Upgrade' window.

I am trying to upgrade my ubuntu distribution from 9.10 to 10.04 using update-manager. I have only 2G free in my / partition, and update-manager complains saying it needs 4G free in the / partition to upgrade.
I presume the space is needed to store downloaded packages. Is there any way I can change the download directory to some other partition (i have plenty of space in other partitions)?

Every where I look online, people are posting ridiculous non-working ways to upgrade their system from one release to another--they do not work for me and I need a definite expert reply. I am working with a fresh install of Debian Lenny/Stable and wish to upgrade to the frozen Squeeze distribution. Supplementing the word "squeeze" in place of "lenny" in my sources.list file does not work and believe this to be an inappropriate way of upgrading. I have tried upgrading apt, dpkg, and aptitude before beginning the upgrade process, cleaning dpkg cache, rebooting, etc.
After updating the above packages I tried all methods of upgrading: safe-upgrade, full-upgrade, and dist-upgrade. All produce dependency problems and try to remove the gnome-desktop package or upgrade everything else except gnome-desktop. (Other packages are also affected, gnome-desktop is the most important in this instance). As I understand it, when upgrading you can comment out the volatile repositories as well as the security updates, is this correct?--either way I have tried countless combination's off commenting/uncommenting to try to get the needed results. I do not want use sid repos or reinstall.

I have an old copy of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 in a virtual machine that I haven't used in a long time. I want to update the distribution to the latest but I'm not seeing an option to do so under the upgrade manager or the synaptic package manager. When I attempt to refresh my package information I get an error message talking about how the repository is no longer valid. I've even tried to open the terminal and type: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and it doesn't do anything.

I am trying to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10. I have never had a problem upgrading before with the Update Manager. Now I get an error message when using the Update Manager. The message says, "Could not calculate the upgrade". See screenshots. I also checked the package manager for broken packages and came up with nothing.

I was running 8.something on my ubuntu server. Today I decided to upgrade releases! So I started it, all via ssh cos the box is about 800 miles away and it was going just fine. However - I went away from the pc for about a hour, and my ssh session died. On reconnect it starts a new ssh session - and I dont know how to reconnect to the upgrade process and finish it off.

I would like to install a program (R for statistical computing). I am using Slackware. On the download page of R (The Comprehensive R Archive Network) there are options to download the code for Debian, Redhat, Suse, and Ubuntu. Which one should I download in my case (using Slackware)? Is there any of them which I should not download?

I'm currently trying to upgrade to 10.04, but I'm experiencing a problem. Currently I am encountering the following error message when trying to upgrade: "An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist."
The message directed me to /var/log/dist-upgrade. I looked at the apt.log file and I discovered the following at the end of the file:
"Investigating ubuntu-desktop
Package ubuntu-desktop has broken Depends on libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio
Considering libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio 2 as a solution to ubuntu-desktop 0

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 Alternate CD and tried to upgrade 8.04 to 10.04. When I run upgrade (with the option "Include latest updates from the Internet?" set to "No" ) in the "Setting new software channels" it gives this error (ScreenShot attached):
Code:
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (upgraded from 9.10) and I can't find a way to upgrade to the new 10.04.1 version.
I've updated all the software sources, changed my country location to US, and even generated a new sources.list file, but my update manager never displays an option to make an upgrade to 10.04.1
Here are my current settings:
Code:
###### Ubuntu Main Repos
deb http://pt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main restricted universe multiverse
###### Ubuntu Update Repos
deb http://pt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-security main restricted universe multiverse

when I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 I lost the ability to enable effects, lost the ability to use compiz and my screen got messed up and my video card driver wasn't working forcing me to re-install it several times. Even now my system doesn't totally work how it used to in 10.04.I want to avoid that in this upgrade. I downloaded the live cd since the wire upgrade took a bunch of hours. But my concern is the graphics, I want to be able to use effects since Unity uses effects, I have unity 2d installed but it doesn't work. So somehow enabling effects is a must.
what steps do I take to make the upgrade process as smooth as possible, I've already done my app updates so my system is current, I'll disable 3rd party ppa's like before but what else? Do I have to disable my video card driver so the live cd video card driver can be installed? How do I keep my setting as is but allow for all the 11.04 goodness to be installed?Or is erasing my current Ubuntu partition and reinstalling 11.04 fresh the best option?

I just upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. Everything seemed to go well and it looks like everything transfered over fine except my email stuff. I was using Evolution with 9.10, but it looks like none of that is on 10.04. Not too worried about the program itself, but I would like to have kept my contacts info and a few of the emails from the last couple of days.

I started off on 9.10 and upgraded to 10.4 without any problems. However during the upgrade to 10.10 got asked about grub (see attachment 1& 2) and I think I should have ticked the other boxs but I didn't. I also got an error (see3) The 4th one I think is a different issue. On the restart it would only get to the purple screen before the login field appears. I presume I need to do something to the grub but have no idea what.My system is 64bit and a raid 1. The attachment 5 shows the partition arrangement I can boot into the the PC with a live (32bit 10.10) cd.

I updated my pc today, all went well no errors during upgrade. But I am unable to boot. I get the splash screen with Ubuntu and 4 coloured dots, then it goes and i get a page of txt. *starting apparmor profiles skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox plymouthd: ply-keyboard.c:384: ply_keyboard_watch_for_input: Assertion `keyboard != ((void*)0)' failed. *Setting sensors limits rather than invoking int scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service ( utility, e.g service s20plymouth-splash start Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an upstart job. you may also use the start ( utility, eg. start s20plymouth-splash Start: uknown job S20plymouth splash
If i leave it the screen just goes black I can get to ttyl by using ctrl&alt&f7 and log in.but thats about it startx just tells me no screens found I expect because xorg isn't used. If i go into recovery mode, failsafe graphics won't load either. So i select netroot and the enter startx which will give me a root desktop. I tried reinstalling grub, but no change. Not sure where to go from here i suspect it is something to do with plymouth? but i am no expert even tho i've been a user for 4 years

I recently got 10.04 installed on my computer by going through the upgrade chain all the way from 9.04.The upgrade chain ended with 10.04 LTS.Today I booted up and found a new distro, 11.04, went up, but when I went to upgrade it told me it could only do a partial upgrade. What's the deal, and how do I get the full 11.04?

I have a dual boot Win7/Ubuntu laptop. I have been running it dual since 10.04, Lucid with no problems, and I upgraded to 10.10 also without problems. However, when I upgraded to 11.04 I began to get error messages on boot up.
Importantly - both Win7 and Ubuntu still work fine, so it could be worse, but clearly something is not right in GRUB.
I could solve this by wiping Ubuntu and reinstalling from the Live CD, but that teaches me nothing, so I would like to get to the bottom of the problem.
The following is what I get if I try to update grub:
jez@jez-laptop:~$ sudo update-grub
[sudo] password for jez:
