Ubuntu Installation :: How Can I Upgrade Video Driver For GMA 3150 Supporting
Dec 17, 2010
Each time after boot up from hibernation I see notification that "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode". I tried to solve the problem as usual but this time I can not resolve it.I haven't expected this problem on new boot or restart. I suppose that the problem is in incorrect video driver or something else.Could you please share your experience how to resolve my problem? How can I upgrade video driver for GMA 3150 supporting?

I have a 802.11a-WLAN running. Due to regulatory restrictions, I am to do some dynamic frequency selection(DFS) on certain channels available in the 802.11a-band. This is called 802.11h. I am seraching for a solution reagarding 802.11h-functionality. I do know, there is a branch within madwifi called madwifi-dfs which was developed mainly by Bennoit Papillaut and Pavel Roskin.
The problem with this driver is, that it doesn't work reliable. If I simply start a network scan on my Lenovo-machine, the DFS-driver running on the embedded board recognizes a radar signal and switches the channel dirctly. So my question is - is there any driver available supporting 802.11h? I do not care about the chipset manufacturer or anything else. All I need is a working DFS-capable driver.

I've seen several threads in Ubuntu regarding implementing vaapi/xvba enabled media players for ATI GPU rendering. Does anyone know of any precompiled rpms for 11.3 (or tips for building on opensuse). I've installed Hellgasts xvba-video-amd rpms from the build service. I wasn't able to successfully build my own mplayer-vaapi from Index of /~gbeauchesne/mplayer-vaapi.

after upgrading to 10.10 I ran into one problem. Upgraded some while ago (when released), then noticed problem but now it starts to really bother me. Unfortunately didn't find any solution yet. I'm 100% sure I didn't have such problem during upgrades starting from Karmic till Lucid.
The problem is with any version of wine (it's not wine issue, i think) and MetaTrader4 on it. Not typical VNC issue The problem is that it works almost normally, but don't show some lines on screen. Take a look at screenshot attached. I found in wine proposal to disable xrender: [URL]... it really helps with that issue, but then I ran in typical AplhaBlend problem and no visible icons in toolbars. So I have to choose to see normal icons in toolbars (see 2nd screenshot) or to see correct chart

How do I do this part of an installation for my video driver using terminal?

A very basic config might be what you need:

$ Identifier "ATI radeon 6850"
$ Driver "fglrx"

I have a HP DC 6000 small form factor which has not taken the GUI after installing the debian lenny version 5.07 on it. I have tried installing 5.01-5.07. None of the Debian series do have the supported driver for the on board graphics card for HP box it seems. I can take the terminal and can see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file which does not have much alterations form the default one which can make the driver been taken by it. Could some body help with the hp driver for Debian for the respective graphics card or could some body me with the content of xorg.xonf file.

I am using Fedora 13 (64-bit). My video card is ATI Radeon HD 4650. I am having problems with the standard Linux driver and somebody has suggested that I should install an ATI-specific video driver. I am told that I should start the PC in failsafe mode, and then tell it to install the "restricted" ATI driver.

since i upgrade my pc to 10.04 lucid i cannot get any audio when i play videos on the web. i can have tried videos, comcast, hulu, etc... the video plays just fine, but no audio. i can go to apple.com and play videos just fine with audio. i can play any other audio just fine (mp3's, cd's, etc...). so i have narrowed it down to possibly a flash player issue. i have tried flashplayer-nonfree, flashplugin, etc... and no luck. here is where it gets weird. i saw a similar post and they tried creating a new account and it worked. so i tried that. i created a test account and all of the videos play just fine without any issue.
does anyone know if there is a way to rebuild or repair an account in ubuntu? i have checked all of the group memberships and they all match the new account that i setup.

Just installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 on my Acer ao532h netbook.I did a clean install, but I had been running UNR 9.10 for some time without a hitch. The new version fixed a slight bug that had made it necessary to tinker with the wifi adapter in the old version, and also seems to boot faster as advertised. However, there is one slight problem with the new version: when I attempt to engage visual effects in the appearance control panel (something which worked in the old version), the options are grayed out, as if the video driver is not installed. When I go to the hardware drivers panel, it doesn't detect any drivers to install. As far as I can remember, I didn't have to install any drivers for the GMA 3150 graphics card in the old version of UNR.

I used Update Manager to upgrade an NVIDIA-based machine from version 9-something to 10.04.
Windows now have NO titlebar !
If I screw around with Visual Effects, the title bars come back but only temporarily and system video display is extremely sluggish. CPU usage is very high due to some process named compiz or xcorg. Upgrades always seem to self-destruct, is this fixable?

I am having problems with sky2 (eth0 driver) periodically disconnecting since in upgraded to 11.04 so i loaded the sk98lin driver (from the Marvell site) and it worked well (sk98lin was the loaded driver in the net config info dialog) until i had to do a reboot and when it came back up i was on sky2 again. I did the install option of the driver installation and it showed sk98lin as the installed driver when i checked the config info prior to the reboot. Now when i try to reinstall it i get the following results and sky2 is listed as the driver rather than sk98lin.
root@david-desktop:/home/david/Desktop/DriverInstall# bash ./install.sh
Installation script for sk98lin driver.
Version 10.87.3.3 (Feb-01-2011)
[code]....
Is the "installation" option the correct way to do the driver install or do I have to use the "patch" option for it to be permanent?

I was running 10.10 with an Nvidia Quadro FX1500 and was able to get the effects (Compiz) working after following the manual driver install (found here) and editing my xorg.conf file. After this upgrade, Xserver (my desktop) wouldn't even launch. It just kept going into a terminal for log in. Not bad - better than not being to do anything at all. I removed all my nvidia drivers
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*
and then created a new xorg.conf file (and later moved to /etc/X11) using
Code:
Xorg -configure
That now allows me to log in to my desktop. However - no Unity. I've read that some people have had luck with the Nvidia 173 drivers, but not here. When I downloaded the current nvidia driver for my card (Quadro FX 1500) from nvidia, and went to install it manually using (from the directory where the download is)
Code:
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-270.41.06.run
Eventually, it errors out with this: The compiler used to compile the kernel (gcc4.4) does not exactly match the current compiler (gcc4.5). For the record, I can't boot from a thumb drive ("boot error") or CD (both were created and tested on a Windows 7 machine.)

If I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

I just installed Ubuntu on my brand new system that I built. I put in my cd for my HD 5770 video card, and an icon shows up on my screen XFX_VGA_V9.8C text under it.
However when I try to access it in anyway, I try to open with autorun prompt, I get a message "This medium contains software intended to be automatically started. would you like to run it?"
I click on run and get "Error autorunning software, cannot find the autorun program."
Is there anyway that I can run this disk. It's important for setup. I cant copy the disk to the desktop, I get errors.

I have installed knoppix 6.0.1 persistent to a usb flash drive. I am currently testing it on my laptop and have successfully installed the graphics driver for nVidia Geforce 7150m driver 180.51
All looks great until i restart and it doesnt work again. when i go to reinstall it, it says its already there, but when i open the nvidia-settings, it doesnt look the same as before. If i reinstall it, it works again, until i restart of course. In case this is important, here is how i installed the driver in root terminal:
sudo apt-get install gcc make
init 3
cd /home/knoppix/Desktop
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run
(A series of questions come up asking to compile a kernel, etc.)
(install runs)
init 5
I am guessing that the new kernel needed for the driver that is installed is not being booted up on when knoppix restarts. I am just unsure as how I can make this kernel accessible at start up or how to start up this kernel again without reinstalling the driver

I've just installed Lucid Lynx on both my machines in the interest of sitting and waiting for the Unity/Gnome 3 storm to blow over. On the HP (see below), everything works great, and I've followed instructions online on how to upgrade to LibreOffice, upgrade the kernel to 2.6.38 using the kernel PPA, etc.
However, on the IBM, I'm using Nvidia proprietary graphics drivers. These work well on the stock kernel that 10.04 installed (2.6.32-32), but installing 2.6.38 seems to break the driver. If I install the driver first, and then the kernel on top, X stops working and I have to revert to the default, generic driver to get back in. Once there, I cannot install the driver again. The Additional Drivers dialog goes through the motions, but then drops a "systemerror: installarchives() failed" error message.
So, is there a different version of the driver I should be trying to install? I should clarify at this point I tried all three options the Additional Drivers dialog provided me, all gave the same result (version 96, version 173, and version current).
Or should I leave the kernel at 2.6.32? Is there any downside to leaving it?

I installed the latest Debian on an Atom 525 rig, with GMA 3150 integrated graphics. I have a 16:9 full HD monitor connected to the rig, but the available resolutions are not 16:9, except for the first and (roughly) the last:
1920x1080, 1680x1050, 1280x1024, 1152x864, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, 720x400
Now, 1920x1080 is the monitor's native resolution, but I really can't use it, stuff is just too small and not everything can be fixed by changing the system fonts' size. So I was wondering if there is a way to add some 16:9 resolutions, I'd look for 1600x900 and most of all 1280x720.I know that this usually gets done editing xorg.conf, but there's no such file in the /etc/X11 folder on my rig.
