Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Get Grub After Upgrade

Jan 1, 2011

I started off on 9.10 and upgraded to 10.4 without any problems. However during the upgrade to 10.10 got asked about grub (see attachment 1& 2) and I think I should have ticked the other boxs but I didn't. I also got an error (see3) The 4th one I think is a different issue. On the restart it would only get to the purple screen before the login field appears. I presume I need to do something to the grub but have no idea what.My system is 64bit and a raid 1. The attachment 5 shows the partition arrangement I can boot into the the PC with a live (32bit 10.10) cd.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Grub After 11.04 Upgrade

Jul 5, 2011

I have a dual boot Win7/Ubuntu laptop. I have been running it dual since 10.04, Lucid with no problems, and I upgraded to 10.10 also without problems. However, when I upgraded to 11.04 I began to get error messages on boot up.

Importantly - both Win7 and Ubuntu still work fine, so it could be worse, but clearly something is not right in GRUB.

I could solve this by wiping Ubuntu and reinstalling from the Live CD, but that teaches me nothing, so I would like to get to the bottom of the problem.

The following is what I get if I try to update grub:

jez@jez-laptop:~$ sudo update-grub

[sudo] password for jez:

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Upgrade - With Image #22 And Unable To Boot Windows

May 17, 2010

I recently performed a reinstall of ubuntu after mucking up my partitions, and I am running it dual booted with windows 7.

I recently performed a grub-pc update, but I didn't know what it was asking me to do during the process itself of updating the process.

It asked me at one point where to install grub, and I selected all my partitions because it suggested that if I didn't know. I think that may have damaged my windows section, which was also selection.

I've attached the output for:

Code:

Problem symptoms:

1) Weird upgrade error in apt-get
2) Unable to boot windows 7
3) Unable to activate proprietary drivers
4) Perpetually being reminded to restart

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Re-load Grub Following Windows 7 SP1 Upgrade On Dual-Boot?

Apr 28, 2011

A few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.

I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.

FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:

dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition
dev/sda2 Windows NTFS
dev/sda3 Windows FAT

How do I "recover" and continue booting to Ubuntu?

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting And APT Upgrade Of Grub?

Jan 17, 2010

OKI am loading 9.10 (K or U, makes no difference). This installs 2-6-31.14. Eventually I am unable to dissuade APT from upgrading to Grub 1.97 beta4. One of two things can happen.

1) I am upgraded to a later kernel at the same time (currently 2-6-31.1. This singularly fails to work, in that I end up with no working kernel at all and I can only run memtest (or Windows 7, which is about as much use): good for the soul no doubt, but frustrating. "Solution": tar up the whole of /boot beforehand and then reinstate it afterwards. I am back to square 1, but at least a working square 1.

2) I persuade APT not to upgrade the kernel.I then get 14 (and 14 recovery) in my grub.cfg, but boot fails dramatically, and it becomes apparent that it has forgotten about /dev/sda, my hard disk.Further investigation shows that I have a new initrd.img in /boot, which doesn't work properly; reinstate the backup version, and all is well. What is going on? Is it just me? How come there aren't crowds of protesting peasants with pitchforks outside Canonical Towers?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Grub After XP To Win 7 Upgrade

May 29, 2010

I keep finding the same fixes on the web and they are not working. What I have/what I did: I have a dual boot PC. HD0 was XP. HD1 Kubuntu 10.04. I upgraded XP to Win 7. This jacked my Grub up, now all I can load is Win 7. I don't see the Grub menu anymore. I've been trying to reinstall Grub using varoius web pages like: [URL]

They seem to all be telling me the same thing but not working. I boot into a liveCD. I have to sudo apt-get install grub then I can do sudo grub. I follow the instructions:
sudo grub
> root (hd0,0)
> setup (hd0)
I get "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition".

Now if I'm understanding this right the reason for that is. HD0,0 is my first HD first partition (which is Win 7), and grub doesn't like windows. I tried swapping it out so it reads:
sudo grub
> root (hd1,0)
> setup (hd1)
I then quit and reboot. Win 7 loads. I don't see Grub.I am using 2 separate hard drives?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Upgrade With New Grub Woes?

Sep 24, 2010

I decided to go ahead and upgrade my 9.10 amd64 to 10.04 ( a little late in the game I know, but I liked Karmic) Well I goofed when prompted to upgrade grub. After reading some other posts about various grub issues, I did the Boot Info Script (results posted below).

Code:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in

[code].....

I have a external usb with a Ubuntu OS on it that I was able to boot into and do some digging. When I upgraded I selected the NTFS partition instead of the actual /boot partition and jacked it all up. Im currently downloading the 10.04 liveCD to repair the grub on the /boot after I repair the MBR on the NTFS partition. Hopefully I can attempt to repair my Linux partitions by reinstalling the Grub that is on the 10.04 liveCD WITHOUT formatting my current partitions and still be able to keep all my current configurations.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Does Not Behave Normally After Upgrade To 10.10?

Mar 13, 2011

some days ago I upgraded my 10.04 Ubuntu to 10.10. Upgrading took quite some time as I had already witnessed in previous upgrades. Everything seems to work fine after this operation but for the Grub. I can no longer set the timer! It means I have to manually push "Enter" to start booting. I also noted that I cannot change the font size of the Grub any longer. I have not seen such behaviour during previous upgrades (I started upgrading with U 9.04).

Ubuntu Installation :: Dvice Requested Re Grub And MBR On Upgrade?

May 12, 2010

I have two instances of Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) I have installed grub2 and all seems OK except for a small bug with update-grub which I have a workaround for. Reported elsewhere

The working system is on /dev/sda7 My copy for testing is on /dev/sda5 gparted flags /dev/sda1 as "boot" and that partition has temp files only. update-grub found my test system on sda5 OK. I would like to upgrade 9.10 on /dev/sda5 to 10.04 (Lucid) as a trial as I had problems with this upgrade on my working system (sda7) and had to recover from a backup image - hence the test system on sda5

I would like advice on what happens to grub2 and MBR which I assume is on sda1 when I do this upgrade. I expect that the upgrade will change grub (in MBR?) to use sda5 instead of sda7 as the main grub filesystem. If not, then all is fine and I carry on as usual.

If not then how to I re-instate my working grub (/boot/grub/*) to sda7 (my working system) as far as the bootloader in MBR is concerned. Is it simply a case of backup and then re-install MBR after the upgrade? Or is there a better way or have I misunderstood something?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Overwrite Grub On Upgrade From 8.04 To 10.4?

Jun 21, 2010

I have been running a dual boot XP and Ubuntu 8.04 on two separate hard drives for a while now without any problems. I used the method posted http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...light=dualboot. I will be upgrading to 10.4 soon (probably after the re-spin in July) and was wondering if I will have problems after upgrading dual booting.

I do not know if while upgrading Grub remains or if Grub2 tries to overwrite. I have read that Grub2 will try to install onto all partitions and hard drives in a fresh install but do not know about upgrading. If it does try I think I need to put it in hda,1 which is the primary drive where Ubuntu is located.

This is not something I have been able to find the answer to with google. I also have Kubuntu on the system which I can change with session manager and am not sure what will happen to that once I upgrade Ubuntu.
