I am using Linux Mint 8 Helena x64 Edition on Dell Studio 15 laptop which has Dell 1520 Wireless-N Mini Card. It does work when I boot from Live CD of Helena, connect to a wired network and download & install the proprietary drivers when prompted. But on the installed system, I am unable to activate the Broadcom STA driver. I tried completely removing and then reinstalling bcmwl-kernel-source and dkms packages from package manager. When I go to Administration -> Hardware Drivers and click on Activate for Broadcom driver, at first there used to be a window which said Downloading and it used to go away after few seconds and nothing used to happen. Then I installed few updates. At the time of writing, I have installed all the available updates. Now after clicking on Activate, I get this error :
Code:
Sorry, installation of this driver failed.
Please have a look at the log file for detains: /var/log/jockey.log

for over at week i have been trying to get my wireless card to work now. If i open Additional drivers, the non proprietary driver seems to be working and active. If i deactivate that and use the STA driver instead, it says active, but currently not in use. When i use the non proprietary driver, i can check mark on 'activate wireless', but nothing happens. When i use the STA driver there are no wireless options. I'm not sure if its important, but when i do "sudo lshw -C network" when the STA driver is active but not in use, the network status changes from 'disabled' to 'unclaimed'. When i came here, i tried to install "firmware-b43-lpphy-installer" as the sticky said i should, but the installation fails. It says my card is not supported: "Not supported card here (PCI id 14e4:4727)!"

so i got myself in way over my head too soon with Ubuntu but i really like the OS.. I installed 10.10 on my HP laptop according to the directions on [URL]. Everything went well and I had no problems until I came across a thread about aircrack-ng.. I decided to test how vulnerable my own connection was after getting scared by looking up some how-to videos on ..... that made it look a little to easy. I was having a ton of problems with the injections tests and couldnt get it to work. I was trying to patch my ath5k driver according to some threads i found on this forum and couldn't get it to work. I finally found a thread somewhere about editing the base.c file to fix the driver. Well, being a noob i have no idea what i did but it wasn't good... yep, shake your head.. i deserve it haha.. anyway....
When i rebooted the comp after finishing the editing process it came up with all kinds of errors and brought me to a grub rescue prompt.. Yikes!! luckily i had Ubuntu 10.10 on a usb so i restarted, tried to delete the partition it was on with gparted and then tried to reinstall it.. The installation worked and now I can boot into windows again from the grub loader with no problems, but Ubuntu is all screwy.. Windows connects to the internet and doesn't seem to be phased in the slightest bit but ubuntu won't let me stay connected to any wireless networks and I also get a failed message when i try to activate the nvidia driver in Ubuntu.. Man, did i learn a lesson about getting ahead of myself and trying to bite off more than I can chew! I really love Ubuntu and the open source ideal so I don't want to let this sour me..
At the partition select prompt when I reinstalled ubuntu I selected "partition my drive manually" or something to that effect. Should I have installed it along side windows via the other option? I have a feeling my problem was compounded when i tried to erase the partition Ubuntu was on but now I'm totally lost and I really don't want to screw up my comp any more! I figured it's time to ask for help instead of shooting in the dark searching random threads for a similar experience which may not be similar at all.
Is there a way to repartition everything from windows without losing my data and reinstalling Ubuntu? I didn't have anything worth saving on Ubuntu but i have about 100gb worth of stuff on my windows partition i don't wanna lose! If I forgot to add any necessary information let me know and i'll be happy to provide any info I can.

I just installed Linux Mint 9 as a dual boot install with Win XP. Trying to activate wireless network card driver and video driver. Pops up: "You are not authorized to perform this action".How do I get authorized?
Now every time I boot Win XP, the Internet Explorer menu bar is all blacked out and goofy. If I log out and back in it corrects itself. If I reboot it's blacked out again. Re-installed IE8. Still blacks out. Also Firefox in Win XP crashes expectantly. It has NEVER crashed on me previously.

It has been haunting me for weeks and I haven't been able to fix it so far: When I installed the wireless driver 43XX series on my laptop using a wired internet, I saw the wireless network for a while and after I rebooted my system, My kernel(31) got corrupted and I got error "kernel Panic (and some sync error)",Thus I started using an older kernel(14),Now When I install wireless driver or mobile broadband driver(wvdial), they get vanished after the reboot and my mobile device modem isn't detected. But they are installed in my system(as shown by synaptic package manager but doesn't seemt to work) I desperately want to use mobile broadband.

Synaptic can't mount my install CD, maybe that has to do something with the problem.

After successfully installing Ubuntu Karmic on a friend's MacBook 3,1 I tried to get the wireless working. On the Live CD, the Broadcom STA driver worked fine, but now that I've finished installing, I'm having problems. The driver is installed, but Hardware Drivers says it isn't enabled. I try to activate it, put in my password, and the "Enabling Driver" dialog pops up for a split second, disappears, and the driver doesn't get activated. I've tried Google to no real avail.

I installed ubuntu 10.04 alternate version recently. I am able to install broadcom STA wireless driver for model 4321. Even if it is listed under System>Hardware Driver, it gives me an error when I try to activate it. It asks me to read the file var/log/jockey.log.
I read the file and i found this:
/sys/module/wl/drivers does not exist, cannot rebind wl drivers.
BroadcomWLHandler Enabled(). knod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted.

Basically I'm triple booting Mac SL, Ubuntu 10.10, and Windows 7. Theres reasons for it. So I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 latest release everything works except the Wireless Internet! Wired works. The strange thing is there is a driver for my macbook 13inch 4th gen, but when I try an activate it I get some wired errors I've got a screenshot to make it easier to explain.

I have just upgraded to 10.04 and can't get wireless connectivity because the STA driver for bcm4312 fails to activate. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I had had similar problems in 9.10 and tried to install bcmwl-kernel-source which apparently caused errors in the upgrade process. Not sure if this is part of the problem.

I was running Fedora 13 on my old computer with a nvidia Geforce FX 5200 graphics card using the nvidia-173xx driver from fusion. After upgrading to Fedora 14 (the first day of its release) the X server wasn't working anymore, the screen just froze up after the progress bar. With Alt+F4 I "moved" to text mode and gave the startx command, but I got the fatal error message that there was no usable configuration detected. I deleted the xorg.conf file and afterwards I was able to start X again. I use the nouveau driver now, but it doesn't nearly work as good as the nvidia-173xx driver. I have it installed, but when I try to activate it (by running nvidia-xconfig as root) the X server doesn't work again after restart, and I have to do the same thing all over again.

So I just recently migrated from Vista to Linux, I'm running Ubuntu Studio 10.04 on a HP Pavilion DV6700 with a Broadcom BCM 4312 b/g frequencies wifi adapter. I followed one guide telling me to use the hardware drivers program to activate Broadcom STA wireless driver, but whenever i attempt to do so it says "SystemError: InstallArchives() failed". Can anyone help?? (BTW i am not that adept with the Linux operating as of yet)

Using a Eee 900A netbook by Asus. By pressing Fn + F2, I can disable or enable the wireless chip on the netbook, a blue LED indicates the status. I've been able to connect to wireless networks just fine with this netbook. However, if the wireless chip ever becomes disabled, I have to reboot to get my network connection back. This generally happens when suspending. For some reason the LED will be off and I have to hit Fn + F2 for it to light up again.
However, after doing so, Linux will not reconnect to the network. It simply changes the wireless status from "wireless is disabled" to "device not ready". Even worse, I've recently had issues with the chip being enabled at boot, thus making it nearly impossible to get connected. I've searched around on-line but haven't found much of anything useful on this. This happens on all kinds of different distros including Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook, EeeBuntu 4 beta, Jolicloud and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook.

I've been trying to get Security Spin up and running (after having tried unsuccessfully with knoppix STD). I need to be able to connect to my home network, or hell any wireless network.I've tried using iwconfig wlan0 as well as the options in the Network Configuration panel as well as other related panels. I'm able to change and set up profiles for the wireless card, but not to activate them. The button just isn't clickable. If it helps, I'm running Security Spin from a unetbootin usb drive. The wireless card is identified by the system as "Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection" .

I've got an eight-year old PC that I'd like to breath some new life into. I was using it for my old scanner (HP, no longer supported by MS or HP), but when my Windows installation finally died I thought it was a perfect time to try Ubuntu. (Xsane running under Ubuntu does support that scanner.) I can get Ubuntu started on it, but when I try to activate/install the recommended Nvidia OEM driver, the system gets sick. Ordinarily I'd not worry about it, but the system only starts into low graphics mode, which leaves some dialogs too large for the display and partially unusable or worse. The PC is a cheap homebrew, using an A7N266-VM ASUS mb. It has some kind of Nvidia chipset on board, but no graphics accelerator.

I just got a new Asus Eee 1001P, and the wireless isn't working at all. I had an Asus EEE 1005HA before that and since both use the AR8132 network card I hoped it would be the same problem as with that, where installing the backports fixed the problem. However, that doesn't do anything. With the 1005HA the connection was only flaky and disconnected a lot, but the 1001P doesn't find any networks to connect to at all. Also, the mobile wireless will connect only once and after disconnecting every attempt to reconnect ends in that connection symbol spinning wildly until I tell the network manager to disconnect. On Kubuntu it doesn't even connect once.I never had that problem with the 1005.
Code:
$ lspci
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Atheros AR8132 / L1c Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (rev c0)
02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. Device 002c (rev 01)

Upgraded to Natty, just after I got this new GPU - ATi Radeon HD 6850.
I cannot activate the driver for it, I have also tried to download and install from AMD but it didn't work. I cannot open the catalyst control centre that is already installed.
When I try I get this.
"system error: Install archives() failed"
When I open the software update application I get this
"Items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalogue is repaired. Do you want to repair it now?"
So click yes. The process is:
"Repairing broken deps and states "Finished" code...
I have tried to use this guide https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troublesho...thRadeonDriver
to remove the files but it won't let me remove.

I have a Acer Aspire running dual boot Ubuntu 9.10 and Vista. Although it has an Atheros wireless card (AR5001 according to linux, AR5007 according to Vista) until recently I didn't have any apparent problems with it.I installed a ZTE MF112 Mobile Broadband Dongle. Now I am experiencing great difficulty in communicating with my wireless router (with both LAN and WAN traffic). Connecting to the network in the first place appears to happen quite smoothly and my computer obtains a DHCP IP address. However the ping response times are measurable in seconds rather than the milliseconds I would expect, and any traffic across the network crawls, or just times out and fails.
I do not believe it is the router at fault as two laptops, both also with Ubuntu, can connect to it fine and swapping it out for another router does not fix the problem either. Also there is no problem connecting from Vista.I suspect that installing the dongle has altered something which has made the bugs in the wireless card/drivers apparent and that's where I need some help.

I installed Debian 5.04. The Debian installer picked the Ethernet card but not the wireless (Atheros 9285). I followed these instructions to install it (found at [URL]...
[code]...
But there was no wireless interface shown in the network interfaces entry of hardinfo, even though I wrote modprobe ath_pci in terminal window. My questions are: 1. I followed the instructions regarding updating the madwifi sources, installing them etc. Does this guarantee that apt downloaded and installed the right madwifi driver? 2. Will I be better off if I try to install the driver downloaded from the Atheros website? 3. How can I activate the wireless interface (since the driver is running should not the wireless interface somehow show up automatically)? 4. When I am running Ubuntu 9.10 it picks up the wireless. Can I somehow copy all the files for the wireless from Ubuntu and paste them in the Debian filesystem?

My son's 10.04 setup uses NVidia's ION graphics. He was having trouble, so I tried reinstalling the drivers, but can not get them back at all. I don't know where I went wrong. I was using the following guide.
Unfortunately, whenever I try load the module nvidia, I get the following:
If I go into Jockey, I see the driver I installed 'nvidia_173', but a message at the bottom stating "This driver is activated but not currently in use."
If I try running nvidia-settings, I get the following:
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
Trying to run nvidia-xconfig:
Trying to install nvidia-xconfig:
I don't know what else to try! I also don't have xorg.conf file:
Right now I do have graphics, but they are blurry and the resolution is off. I really, really don't want to reinstall.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed and can browse the internet via cable, but wireless isnt working. My wireless driver is "Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN".
In the windows device manager, I found the corresponding inf file to be oem20.inf which I tried to install it through "Setup Windows Driver" but it gave an error saying invalid driver. I also tried installing the Broadcom STA driver, but that didnot help.
I am dual booting with Windows 7, and i installed ubuntu through the windows wubi installer. My laptop is HP Pavilion dv4. I have installed the regular Ubuntu desktop and have made all upgrades. The results from lspci command i have added below.
