Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Use 10.04 Xorg On Multiple Screens?

May 22, 2010

I have Nvidia Quadro NVS 440 with four 1280x1024 LCD monitors and Ive tried to upgrade Kubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04. Everything works well at 9.10. After upgrade, system is hanging and I cannot reach desktops in all monitors. Ive tried to reconfigure x server using Nvidia-settings control panel. This doesnt work. So i tried to reinstall system from CD, because there should be something wrong with the upgrade, but the problem persist. Ive tried to reinstall with Ubuntu, but there is same problem.

My configuration of screens are: Screen 3 left of Screen 0, Screen 0, Screen 1 above Screen 0 and Screen 2 right of Screen 1, separate X screens and Xinerama enabled. Sometimes, if i reach upper edge of Screen 0, mouse will continue at the lower edge of screen 0. Screen 3 is not reachable and If I try to move mouse to it, system will hang and x server is automaticaly restarted. Ive tried to configure all screens with absolute positioning too, but this doesnt work either. My only option now is downgrade to 9.10 .

Ubuntu Installation :: X11 Crash Using Fglrx When Setup Multiple Screens?

Apr 29, 2011

After the installation I have 3 screens setup, on DVI, HDMI (to DVI) and DisplayPort this is using and AMD HD5570 video card. With this configuration mirrored everything is fine and I can see all three displays. However having 3 copies of the same display is worthless, so I want a separate desktop per display. This is when everything goes wrong, after making the change to have 3 displays it fails to work, ie it crashes with the message below (full log is attached as well)Now I can use any 2 monitors independently with the third one mirrored, but I can not have 3 independent monitors configured on the card without X crashing. The exact same config, did work fine in Windows (where I verified the setup).

Ubuntu :: Xorg Messed Up - Fatal Server Error (No Screens Found)

Apr 23, 2010

My issue began with my resolution changing to 800x600 in Karmic Koala and then my inability to change it back to anything else. In my haste to fix it before going to work this morning I loaded a new xorg.conf without backing up the old xorg.conf with data not relevant for my monitor and now I'm in limbo. The good news, I hope, is that I also run 8.04 on the same computer so I do have access to what I hope is proper xorg.conf / I've modified the existing xorg.conf file and I'm still getting the "low graphics mode" message (EE) problem parsing the config file and (EE) Error parsing the config file. Fatal Server Error: no screens found.

Ubuntu :: Positioning Screens - Xorg.conf - Vertical Monitor Cursor?

May 23, 2010

Just a day ago I did a clean install of 10.04, after wiping the disk clean of 9.10. So far everything's working great. Except for my old dual-screen configuration. A year or two ago I badly wanted to have 2 monitors, where both would share the same desktop/workspace allowing me to drag windows back and forth between the two. After a lot of research, I finally was able to put together (although a probably quite sloppy) xorg.conf file that did the trick for me.

My case is somewhat unique in that my left monitor is horizontal, while my right monitor is rotated 90 degrees, and is vertical. In 10.04, my old xorg.conf file sort of works, but I have problems on my right, vertical screen:

- when I move my cursor onto the vertical screen, when I try to move it above where my left, horizontal screen's boundaries end, my cursor jumps down to the bottom of my vertical screen. I can't access anything with my cursor above this boundary on my vertical screen. Note that my vertical screen's bottom is in aligned with my horizontal screen's bottom, and that the vertical screen sticks up above the horizontal screen, as both have a 1680 x 1050 resolution/widescreen aspect ratio.

- however, it appears that only my cursor is having issues accessing the upper part of my vertical screen. When I maximize windows in this screen, they properly fill it up entirely like they should. (but I still can't access the top parts of these applications with my cursor).

So obviously there must be some boundary managing where my cursor is allowed to go, and another set of rules defining the boundaries that the windows themselves can be shown/take up. Also note that because of my right monitor being rotated vertically, I'm forced to use Xinerama. Can someone help me go through my xorg.conf file, below, to help me get this "simple" cursor issue fixed? I'm sure it's just one minor thing that has to be changed, but I'm not sure what:

Code:
# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@palmer) Sun Feb 1 20:21:04 UTC 2009
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder57) Thu Jul 17 18:39:19 PDT 2008

Ubuntu :: How To Get Multiple Screens Setup

Jun 3, 2010

I was wondering when and/or how to get multiple screens setup and working in unison. Currently I have 3d rendering working but all of my screens work as separate desktops. They all have their own start menu and panel bar. I cannot move a window from screen to screen. I have to open a new window in that screen and then it is stuck on that screen and can not be move any where else. When is this going to be fixed because until it is unfortunately Micro Slop will still have my business. I am a power user and enjoy my 4 screens when they work in unison, not as individuals.

Ubuntu :: Can't Make Multiple Displays (two Screens) Work

Feb 6, 2010

I used to use nvidia and Twinview to drive an LCD and CRT monitor as one big area. I've changed over to using the nv driver, and I gather that xinerama is deprecated now in favour of xrandr. But I can't get xrandr to even report anything about my two displays, and can't get any picture on the CRT. This is despite both being fully detected by X (according to the log file).

I've just changed over from using the nvidia driver to the nv driver. I did this because I discovered that the frequent system crashes while watching video was caused by the nvidia driver, partly because my card is a GeForce FX 5200, not supported by the current nvidia driver which contains bug fixes for the problem. So I've used Synaptic to remove all the nvidia drivers and add-ons, and installed nv and the libgl1-mesa-dri and libgl1-mesa-glx drivers.

I moved my old xorg.conf file aside and on a second X display ran X :1 -configure to generate a clean new xorg.conf and started from there. I'm doing all these experiments by modifying xorg.conf, and then on a second console running up X on display :1 to try it out. Another odd thing: xrandr doesn't report any "outputs" (since I'm using the nv driver, I'd expect to see DVI0 and VGA1), instead it just reports this:

Code:

# xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 200, current 2560 x 1024, maximum 2560 x 1024
default connected 2560x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm

Fedora :: Gnome 3 Goes To Failsafe With Multiple Screens

If, at this stage (when logged in), I plug an external monitor to the laptop (and configure it using the monitor config tool), then I can run gnome 3 shell on my external monitor as well... BUT:

If I log in when the external screen is already plugged in, then gnome boots in fallback mode... with other words: Gnome3 seems to be able to run the graphic+screen with gnome 3, but the "fallback" detection seems not to beleive so...

Dec 17, 2010

I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 on my Macbook Pro 3,1 which has an nVidia 8600M GT video card. The native screen resolution for my system is 1440x900.Ubuntu is installed booting through Grub2 straight from my EFI firmware through rEFIt. I have to disable quiet boot and splash screen but I can boot into a shell. From there I obviously tried startX, but much to my chagrin it did not start. I screwed around with drivers and the like for a bit and ended up reinstalling completely to try and rule things out one by one.

I started by blacklisting nouveau, which didn't load nouveau but also didn't work. I then tried installing the newest nVidia drivers, which also didn't work.Everything I tried gave me the same error, "no screens found".I below is the most resent Xorg.0.log dump with the attempt at running with the nVidia driver.

Code:

The 'Multiple Screens' tool, aka grandr, is very handy for setting up my dual monitors. But restarting my system restores the monitor setup to the (crummy) default settings. Is there a way to save these settings and make sure they are always applied when the OS boots? Putting these settings in my xorg.conf would be fine, but I'm not sure where or in what form the settings generated by grandr might be located, or if they're at all xorg.conf compatible.

General :: Fedora 13 Installation / Unable To Install Multiple Distributions / Partition?

Dec 19, 2010

I am trying to install 2 or 3 versions of linux on my hardisk of 500GB capacity. The configuration of my machine is Intel Dual Core, 4 GB Ram, 3.0 Processor Windows XP is not installed on this.I tried to use a tool called GParted but was unable to use as it was not able to bring up the XServer So I booted the machine with fedora14 installation CD and chose "Custom Layout" After reading about the partitions needed by Fedora I created 3 partitions in /dev/sda

/dev/sda1 the boot of 500MB formated as ext4
/dev/sda2 the swap of 6096MB formatted as swap
/dev/sda3 / size 150GB formatted as ext4

The installation went well and fc14 runs well on this.

However when I went to install the other linux version ....the installer was not able to recognize the unallocated space of nearly 350 GB on the hard disk.....So I am not able to create new partitions and then install the new linux on the newer partition. As a result I am unable to make use of the remaining space on the HDisk.I think I should have created /dev/sda4 /dev/sda5 etc when I installed fc14 itself....

Would appreciate some tips on how to install the other versions of Linux on this HDisk....

It is impossible to drag and drop (URLs) across separate X-Screens.My setup is as follows (see also xorg. conf attached):: 2 GPUs with 3 Monitors attached (which excludes Xinerama and the like) Every Monitor has a separate X-Screen Whenever I try to drag an URL (e.g. a file form nautilus) from screen #1 to screen #2 this is what happens when crossing the border: The Cursor appears on the left side of both of the Screens. On screen #1 the URL (the files Symbol) stays attached to it, on screen #2 it is simply the blank cursor. Dropping the URL drops it onto screen #1, so the one I'm coming from.

Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Driver 4 Tiny Screens On One Monitor?

Jun 25, 2010

This happened after ubuntu pushed an nvidia graphics update about a week ago, on upgrade I booted up into this:Obviously I had to take this picture with a camera, since a screenshot only showed one screen. It's perfectly usable like this, except that it's too small to read.I of course have tried 'sudo nvidia-xconfig', and a minimal xorg.conf:

Code:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Along with purging and reinstalling all of the nvidia packages numerous times. I'm currently running on the VESA driver, which sucks. My chipset is a 9200M, but like I said, it worked perfectly before the last upgrade. In all my years of using linux and kubuntu, I've seen and fixed numerous nvidia driver errors, but I've never seen one this strange, usually it will run or not run.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Configure Wacom/bamboo Tablets And Xorg

Jan 31, 2011

A few weeks ago, I was configuring my wacom tablet with the Wacom Control Panel by QB89Dragon, and suddenly xorg crashed. I remember specifically that I was modifying the pressure curve of the pen when it crashed. The screen went black, but the computer stayed on. Since then, every time I start up ubuntu normally, it would show the splash screen, but would then drop me to a black screen. But if I boot up under recovery mode, failsafeX, and generate a new x configuration, and restart X, it will work fine until I restart.

I've tried looking for an xorg.conf, but since I'm running 10.04, I guess it doesn't use an xorg.conf anymore. I tried uninstalling the program I used to configure it, but no go. I tried generating a new configuration with the tablet unplugged, with the tablet plugged in, even with a different tablet. And, since nothing is ever that simple when I do something wrong, nothing so far has worked.
