Ubuntu / Apple :: Xorg "no Screens Found" MacbookPro 3,1 NVidia 8600M GT

Dec 17, 2010

I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 on my Macbook Pro 3,1 which has an nVidia 8600M GT video card. The native screen resolution for my system is 1440x900.Ubuntu is installed booting through Grub2 straight from my EFI firmware through rEFIt. I have to disable quiet boot and splash screen but I can boot into a shell. From there I obviously tried startX, but much to my chagrin it did not start. I screwed around with drivers and the like for a bit and ended up reinstalling completely to try and rule things out one by one.

I started by blacklisting nouveau, which didn't load nouveau but also didn't work. I then tried installing the newest nVidia drivers, which also didn't work.Everything I tried gave me the same error, "no screens found".I below is the most resent Xorg.0.log dump with the attempt at running with the nVidia driver.

Code:

[ 3242.793]
X.Org X Server 1.9.0
Release Date: 2010-08-20
[ 3242.829] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0

I am a computer science student so I am not completely inept, however I just cannot seem to figure out whats wrong with this thing.

Ubuntu :: Xorg Messed Up - Fatal Server Error (No Screens Found)

Apr 23, 2010

My issue began with my resolution changing to 800x600 in Karmic Koala and then my inability to change it back to anything else. In my haste to fix it before going to work this morning I loaded a new xorg.conf without backing up the old xorg.conf with data not relevant for my monitor and now I'm in limbo. The good news, I hope, is that I also run 8.04 on the same computer so I do have access to what I hope is proper xorg.conf / I've modified the existing xorg.conf file and I'm still getting the "low graphics mode" message (EE) problem parsing the config file and (EE) Error parsing the config file. Fatal Server Error: no screens found.

Ubuntu :: Nvidia 'No Screens Found' After Every Reboot?

Nov 7, 2010

Some background to summarise, I have installed 10.10 clean over the top of 10.04. I did not have X/display problems on 10.04. After installing the Nvidia display driver for my device (Asus 8800GT - display driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.12.run) in order to get dual-headed display working under TwinView (as I had previously have used on 10.04 problem-free) I cannot reboot/shutdown my machine without a Fatal Error No Screens Found message appearing at boot time.I can hibernate, but this is less than ideal, especially after installing updates which require a restart. Every time this does happen I can re-run the driver installation and all is well again.Below are two copies of my Xorg log. The first is the erroneous log, the second the successful log. Below that is my xorg config file generated via nvidia-xconfig.

Ubuntu Installation :: With NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card Drivers (310M) On A Dell Vostro 3300 - Errors "no Device Found - No Screens Found"

Oct 28, 2010

I have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.

The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:

1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??

Ubuntu / Apple :: MacBookPro 6,2 - Only See 2GB Of 4GB RAM?

May 6, 2010

I installed 32-bit 10.04, and only see 2GB of the 4GB available:

Code:
$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2193 1223 969 0 57 817
-/+ buffers/cache: 348 1844
Swap: 4092 25 4066

I was expecting to see 3GB of memory (since I installed 32-bit Ubuntu), which is what I was used to on other systems, but 2GB seems odd. Is there a way to improve things?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Multi-boot MacbookPro With Various Other Distros And Versions?

Sep 21, 2010

I have a MacbookPro 5,1 with 2GBRAM, which successfully dual-boots with Ubuntu 9.04 since a year. I wish to urgently install ubuntustudio, and also wish to have one or perhaps two more partitions, where I may install the latest Ubuntu as well as another Linux distro.

Typically, think of a multi-boot scenario:
Mac OSX 10.5.x
Ubuntu 9.04 <<--working production install, not to be messed.
UbuntuStudio 10.4
Ubuntu 10.10 [just a few days left!]
Fedora or Knoppix or Debian.

if possible, i'd also like to keep one partition free and unallocated, or reformat a partition, if i ever need to install windows. any thing i'd need to watch out for in this? I've got no extra or free partitions, only free space on the mac partition, that i'd like to carve out and allocate to partitions. Also, before i begin, is there a way I can clone my entire mac+linux hard-disk so in the event of a failure i can get *everything* back, mac as well as ubuntu? I bought a hd of an identical size, but use it with Time Machine. I'd rather use it to clone the entire hd.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Disks Disappear Suddenly While MacBookPro Installation

Mar 2, 2011

Im trying to install Ubuntu on my Intel MacBook Pro 13". When booting from the livecd, Im experiencing strange issues. Sometimes the partiontable and disks/partitions are not readable straight away, sometimes you can read them once (when opening gparted or the install-routine), but then they disappear after it. Sometimes they remain quite a while and "survive" all parted and other tools, and then produce I/O errors during install (after successfull partitioning).

I want to know... are these issues well known or am I the only one with such errors? Im not doing anything wrong, AFAIK. The devices just disappear sooner or later until only loop0 (cd-rom) remains.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Natty Install Changed Partition Scheme (MacbookPro 8,1)?

May 5, 2011

i was experiencing slow start ups since i installed ubuntu 11.04. it took about 20-30sec for the apple logo to come up (or rEFIt). today apple released EFI firmware updates which doesn't seem to install. reason is that the partition scheme is not compatible. EFI Firmware updates only install from GUID partition schemes.
DiskUtility tells me i have MBR. So it seems like Ubuntu changed the Partition Scheme.

Can any body confirm that? how can i make sure ubuntu installs into existing GUID? i will re-partition later today and give you an update if the EFI firmware update installs and boot time is faster.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Use 10.04 Xorg On Multiple Screens?

May 22, 2010

I have Nvidia Quadro NVS 440 with four 1280x1024 LCD monitors and Ive tried to upgrade Kubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04. Everything works well at 9.10. After upgrade, system is hanging and I cannot reach desktops in all monitors. Ive tried to reconfigure x server using Nvidia-settings control panel. This doesnt work. So i tried to reinstall system from CD, because there should be something wrong with the upgrade, but the problem persist. Ive tried to reinstall with Ubuntu, but there is same problem.

My configuration of screens are: Screen 3 left of Screen 0, Screen 0, Screen 1 above Screen 0 and Screen 2 right of Screen 1, separate X screens and Xinerama enabled. Sometimes, if i reach upper edge of Screen 0, mouse will continue at the lower edge of screen 0. Screen 3 is not reachable and If I try to move mouse to it, system will hang and x server is automaticaly restarted. Ive tried to configure all screens with absolute positioning too, but this doesnt work either. My only option now is downgrade to 9.10 .

Ubuntu :: Positioning Screens - Xorg.conf - Vertical Monitor Cursor?

May 23, 2010

Just a day ago I did a clean install of 10.04, after wiping the disk clean of 9.10. So far everything's working great. Except for my old dual-screen configuration. A year or two ago I badly wanted to have 2 monitors, where both would share the same desktop/workspace allowing me to drag windows back and forth between the two. After a lot of research, I finally was able to put together (although a probably quite sloppy) xorg.conf file that did the trick for me.

My case is somewhat unique in that my left monitor is horizontal, while my right monitor is rotated 90 degrees, and is vertical. In 10.04, my old xorg.conf file sort of works, but I have problems on my right, vertical screen:

- when I move my cursor onto the vertical screen, when I try to move it above where my left, horizontal screen's boundaries end, my cursor jumps down to the bottom of my vertical screen. I can't access anything with my cursor above this boundary on my vertical screen. Note that my vertical screen's bottom is in aligned with my horizontal screen's bottom, and that the vertical screen sticks up above the horizontal screen, as both have a 1680 x 1050 resolution/widescreen aspect ratio.

- however, it appears that only my cursor is having issues accessing the upper part of my vertical screen. When I maximize windows in this screen, they properly fill it up entirely like they should. (but I still can't access the top parts of these applications with my cursor).

So obviously there must be some boundary managing where my cursor is allowed to go, and another set of rules defining the boundaries that the windows themselves can be shown/take up. Also note that because of my right monitor being rotated vertically, I'm forced to use Xinerama. Can someone help me go through my xorg.conf file, below, to help me get this "simple" cursor issue fixed? I'm sure it's just one minor thing that has to be changed, but I'm not sure what:

Code:
# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@palmer) Sun Feb 1 20:21:04 UTC 2009
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder57) Thu Jul 17 18:39:19 PDT 2008
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)

Ubuntu :: No Screens Found When Trying To Start X Server / Get That?

Oct 14, 2010

Running Ubuntu 10.10 x64, fully updated kernel and stuff, in VMWare Workstation 7.

Before I tried installing the Nvidia driver, I set up all my stuff, settings, etc. Restarted several times, everything went okay.

I then decided to install the Nvidia drivers for my GTS 250. I first tried the manual install (sudo sh NVIDIA-INSTALL-NAME.run) and it failed saying something about the nvidia.ko or nvidia.so. I tried using this page http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9203671 to fix it, but it still failed, so then I used the automatic method (sudo apt-get install nvidia-current) and it installed fine, then I ran nvidia-xconfig and restarted.

The VM started up, but no GUI came up, instead, a black screen with a terminal (I think it's called a Virtual Terminal) came up and asked me to log in. I tried the command "startx" from there, and it told me no screens were found.

What can I try?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Fatal Error: No Screens Found?

Feb 15, 2011

I just installed Maverick on a brand new system last Saturday. Everything worked, except dual monitors, so I activated the proprietary ATI/AMD driver. That allowed the dual monitors to work, except that it put a little "AMD unsupported hardware" watermark in the lower right-hand side of each screen. After a day or two, I decided to go back to the default driver while trying to figure out how to avoid the watermark.

I assumed that when I deactivated/removed the proprietary driver that it would automatically switch back to the default. Instead, my computer now boots to TTY1, and when I try to install xserver.xorg, etc., I get a lot of error messages, ike "No screens found" or "Screens found, but configuration is unusable," etc. The same messages show up in the logs. Can anyone help me get back to a useable desktop display? At this point, I don't care which one. erhaps the proprietary would be easiest since it seems to be holding my system hostage, but either one would work.
