General :: Fedora 13 Installation / Unable To Install Multiple Distributions / Partition?

Dec 19, 2010

I am trying to install 2 or 3 versions of linux on my hardisk of 500GB capacity. The configuration of my machine is Intel Dual Core, 4 GB Ram, 3.0 Processor Windows XP is not installed on this.I tried to use a tool called GParted but was unable to use as it was not able to bring up the XServer So I booted the machine with fedora14 installation CD and chose "Custom Layout" After reading about the partitions needed by Fedora I created 3 partitions in /dev/sda

/dev/sda1 the boot of 500MB formated as ext4
/dev/sda2 the swap of 6096MB formatted as swap
/dev/sda3 / size 150GB formatted as ext4

The installation went well and fc14 runs well on this.

However when I went to install the other linux version ....the installer was not able to recognize the unallocated space of nearly 350 GB on the hard disk.....So I am not able to create new partitions and then install the new linux on the newer partition. As a result I am unable to make use of the remaining space on the HDisk.I think I should have created /dev/sda4 /dev/sda5 etc when I installed fc14 itself....

Would appreciate some tips on how to install the other versions of Linux on this HDisk....

Ubuntu :: Single Home Partition Access With 10.04 And 11.04 Multiple Distributions

Apr 26, 2011

I've set up a separate Data partition, Creating a separate home partition in Ubuntu during installation Now I wish, if I'm able too, to access this partition of Data with both my 10.04 LTS edition and the new 11.04 Edition of Ubuntu.I tried once, using the methods above, to gain access to that partition, but it just denied me access to the 11.04 installation.I edited the Fstab file in mediaubuntu 11.04etcfstab, and changed back to regain access.* Mount ubuntu 11.04 first to access it*

Am I able to configure my system, that both distributions, can access the same Data partition. If so How would I go about it.I have 2 separate login names for the 2 distributions, but I want to access the same Data partition, folders, using either one. Same programs, games, and e-mail accounts. Also how would I set up Evolution, so that both operating systems use the same e-mail database, saving me from having mail in both, and no idea of where any of it is.I've read numerous posting on this, but either they don't apply, are just too technical, or only relate to 8.04 at best.

Fedora Installation :: Unable To Install In System As One Of The Multiple Operating Systems

Mar 13, 2009

I am unable to Install Fedora10 in my system as one of the multiple operating systems and it gets hanged after probing for Hardware devices and so ...I get fedora trademark sought of symbol and even after waiting any amount of time it doesnt go further..neither the keyboard works nor the mouse pointer moves... I am stuck at this screen shown in the installation screenshot...I get this screen however I dont get the options back or next or its that I am unable to see this options on the screen at all and mouse gets hanged and even keyboard doesnt work...

[code]....

Initially after booting with the media it doesnt even prompt me to press any key to boot from CD or Dvd or I get any screen to select the option for the mode of installation like text based installation or graphical installation..it hardly shows me this screen for even a fraction of second as well...

It takes me to the screen

1) Install or upgrade fedora
2) rescue existing installation...
3)
4) Memory test

when I click on install fedora I am taken to the fedora splash screen and nothing goes ahead... I tried in rescue mode as well... In rescue mode it asks me for language selection...keyboard layout... later it doesnt go ahead as well... I have checked the installation media and it confirmed that the installation media is good... I use Redhat 4.1 version and It works fine except for the message drivers/usb/hid.c core message received at :75 while trying to restart shutdown or access a virtual console... Along with Redhat and while trying to install fedora I have windows server 2008,Windows vista on that harddisk...

General :: Ubuntu Distributions - Put Multiple Virtual Desktops In Panel

Oct 22, 2010

I first tried latest version 10.10 desktop. very slow booting in a Centrino CPU laptop not booting at all in a N455 CPU netbook. Tried version 10.04 which seems to work better fast booting in Centrino CPU laptop. fast booting in N455 CPU netbook. From Centrino Laptop with Windows XP on HD, once loaded Ubuntu as persistent live program from a USB drive, tried to install the program on SD memory card in PC slot. Upon request, installation made onto that memory only, not on inside HD, hence formatting only that memory. Upon completion, after removing the external memories and booting again the PC it does not boot of its own any more. XP OS damaged. I have recovered the system with a Toshiba backup CD but the HD has been formatted and all data lost. How can this happen ? I'll never try anymore to permanently install Ubuntu. I'll use it as persistent live on an external memory. I only have an old PC laptop with 128 MB RAM for further installation testing but no Ubuntu release can boot there. By the way, Lubuntu 10.10 look more fast and safe although appears to have more limitations then Ubuntu 10.10.

Applications :: Automated Install Of 30 Applications Across Multiple Distributions?

Jun 15, 2010

I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

General :: Distributions Allow An Install Without GUI Desktop?

Jan 7, 2010

I've got a great little Thinkpad X22 laptop that I hate to put to rest. It isn't really any good for the latest and greatest Linux distro since it's something like 10 to 12 years old. What I've been wanting to do for quite a while, now, is build a text-base laptop that I can run VI, Emacs, Mutt, etc. I'm looking for some recommendations for distributions that will allow me to do an install without a GUI desktop. Also, a distro that, in this form, will still have good support for wireless. I figure that if I can get my wireless card(s) working, I can pretty much do anything with it. I've been running Slackware, Ubuntu, and Fedora 12 on my Thinkpad T41. Do either of those distributions allow an install without a GUI desktop?

Software :: Put Multiple Virtual Desktops In Panel - Distributions Based In Debian

Jan 21, 2011

According to Distrowatch, the two most downloaded distributions are Mint and Ubuntu. I have put both on my computer. In Mint I can find no way to put multiple virtual desktops in my panel. In Ubuntu 10.10, when I go to synaptic package manager the settings tab with the repositories is dimmed out. I have enabled the sources list in administration but it is a less convenient way to add repositories. Despite what the linux community seems to think, I find that Simply Mepis and Pclinuxos are better for actual use.

General :: Distributions Like Ubuntu And Fedora Costomize Their Own Kernels?

Aug 14, 2010

As I was trying to do some patching on Ubuntu's kernel I've found out kernel.org's patches cannot be merged correctly with the kernel source. I'm wondering if distributions like Ubuntu have their own kernels different from official ones?

Another thing that I think could be related to this question is the name of the directory of source tree in Ubuntu that is linux-headers-2.6.31-21. What does that 21 stand for? Also there is a directory named linux-headers-2.6.31-21-generic. What's the difference between these two?

I know first to shrink the partition to make room. but i still don't know exactly. say, i shrink win7os partition to 40g and create an extended partition of 221-40 =181g, and then add partiton /boot, /swap, /home, /... and a number of partitons for vista and a number of similar partitions for fedora. But I doubt I wouldn't be able to install vista when opensuse installation is done.

Networking :: 'Unable To Resolve Host Address' Errors With Newer Distributions

Mar 10, 2010

I'm trying to troubleshoot some strange networking problems. The pattern seems to be that only newer distributions are affected. CentOS 5.4 and Ubuntu 8.04 work fine out-of-the-box. But Arch, Sidux, AntiX, Fedora, etc. show the same pattern of errors.Certain websites cannot be found unless I disable ipv6 in Firefox. And certain addresses cannot be resolved using various terminal commands (wget, apt-get, yum, etc.). What I would ideally like is a permanent solution, perhaps changing some settings on my router, so that I don't have to deal with this each time I test-drive a new distro. I have a hunch the issue has something to do with my DSL provider (Fairpoint) filing for bankruptcy.

One more piece of information that may or may not be relevant: I recently switched a website from one hosting company to another. I noticed there was a delay of several days where I saw the old version at the old host, but viewing the site at a friend's house or the coffee shop showed the new site on the new host. This leads me to suspect DNS issues perhaps, but this is not an area of expertise.
