I am trying to install ubuntu either 9.04 or 9.10, I have the disks for both so it doesn't matter. However my computer is hooked to a T.V. with an HDMI cable. I get the bios screen and then the ubuntu language screen, but once I select the option to install it get the ubuntu loading screen for a few minutes then a black screen on the T.V. saying no signal. Graphics card is a NVidia Geforce GTS 250.
View 1 RepliesI tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 but after I enabled my second monitor through nVidia settings I couldn't boot. At that point I didn't know the problem had to do with that. I tried to reinstall Ubuntu but the install hanged so I downloaded and tried Mint thinking that the CD was defect. Now after enabling the second monitor via nVidia Settings I can't boot still. Bootup stalls at "Checkingg battery". I can press CTRL+ALT+F1 to open a shell. If I type "startx" then I get this:

I want to install and use 11.04 64bit on my laptop. My laptop's matrix is broken so I connected another monitor for it to work. Everything was fine until I updated to 11.04 from 10.04. After installing and turning on laptop, it loaded unity, and my monitor didn't turn on. Because my laptop main screen isn't working I cant check for screen or look for preferences to change.

On screen #1 the URL (the files Symbol) stays attached to it, on screen #2 it is simply the blank cursor. Dropping the URL drops it onto screen #1, so the one I'm coming from.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Nvidia Quadro NVS 440 with four 1280x1024 LCD monitors and Ive tried to upgrade Kubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04. Everything works well at 9.10. After upgrade, system is hanging and I cannot reach desktops in all monitors. Ive tried to reconfigure x server using Nvidia-settings control panel. This doesn�t work. So i tried to reinstall system from CD, because there should be something wrong with the upgrade, but the problem persist. Ive tried to reinstall with Ubuntu, but there is same problem.
My configuration of screens are: Screen 3 left of Screen 0, Screen 0, Screen 1 above Screen 0 and Screen 2 right of Screen 1, separate X screens and Xinerama enabled. Sometimes, if i reach upper edge of Screen 0, mouse will continue at the lower edge of screen 0. Screen 3 is not reachable and If I try to move mouse to it, system will hang and x server is automaticaly restarted. Ive tried to configure all screens with absolute positioning too, but this doesnt work either. My only option now is downgrade to 9.10 .
Stupidly did the automatic upgrade to 11.04 last night. Didn't go TERRIBLY wrong, but on many applications I just get a blank white screen. Even on some that launch properly, if i minimize or switch between apps, I get that same blank screen. App is working (clicked around in Evolution and Title changed), but I can't see anything. Happens both in Unity and Classic.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI previously used 11.1 with KDE 3.5. Since I have /home on a separate partition I decided to install 11.2 from scratch to avoid any conflicts with KDE 4 installing. No problems on first reboot and some updates were installed. Now at each boot I'm dropped into text login. If I try <startx> I get <no screens found> and /var/log/Xorg.0.log gives <screens found but none have usable configuration>. However if I add vga=952 at the boot screen (for a 1280x800 laptop) I get into graphical login and everything works well (yes even KDE 4). Below is an snip from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

This happened after ubuntu pushed an nvidia graphics update about a week ago, on upgrade I booted up into this:Obviously I had to take this picture with a camera, since a screenshot only showed one screen. It's perfectly usable like this, except that it's too small to read.I of course have tried 'sudo nvidia-xconfig', and a minimal xorg.conf:

Along with purging and reinstalling all of the nvidia packages numerous times. I'm currently running on the VESA driver, which sucks. My chipset is a 9200M, but like I said, it worked perfectly before the last upgrade. In all my years of using linux and kubuntu, I've seen and fixed numerous nvidia driver errors, but I've never seen one this strange, usually it will run or not run.
After the installation I have 3 screens setup, on DVI, HDMI (to DVI) and DisplayPort this is using and AMD HD5570 video card. With this configuration mirrored everything is fine and I can see all three displays.However having 3 copies of the same display is worthless, so I want a separate desktop per display.This is when everything goes wrong, after making the change to have 3 displays it fails to work, ie it crashes with the message below (full log is attached as well)Now I can use any 2 monitors independently with the third one mirrored, but I can not have 3 independent monitors configured on the card without X crashing. The exact same config, did work fine in Windows (where I verified the setup).

The startup and shutdown displays are a series of vertical black and white lines, and the text displayed on them appears as more or less white blobs. Otherwise, the displays when 11.04 is running are fine, but this startup looks so naff it would be nice to change it so that the diplays can be read. I would hate to demonstrate Ubuntu to someone and have to explain such a display.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI realise this is an issue that has been covered a lot, one way or another, but at least from what I've been able to find, most of the discussion centres around getting HDMI audio to work. However, I have problems even getting the video to work from my laptop's HDMI output.
I have an HP dv6z-se, with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 (1 Gb) video card and using F14/KDE. My problem is that when I go to System Settings/Display/Monitor, Fedora doesn't actually seem to realise my computer even has an HDMI output and only displays options for VGA and my integrated screen.
When I plug it into my LCD screen, sometimes I get a 'No Signal' message and sometimes I get garbled static and a message about unrecognised input and the frequency it's coming at.
I read elsewhere in the forum that someone was able to get video working by editing their xorg.conf file, so I went in and tried to see if I could replicate that, but none of the files in my xorg.conf.d folder had anything related to video outputs (as far as I can tell at this point).
I have just upgraded from 11.1 to 11.4. When I boot up, I get a command line, but when I do 'startx', I get 'Fatal server error: no screens found'. I have been looking for a solution and tried 'Xorg -configure' but this gives:

Just downloaded f10 last night. Install goes fine, but when I boot it goes to root command line. I enter in startx and recieve and error.

I just bought a powerful Sapphire nettop HD Mini-pc as shown here : [URL]
Installed a 32 bits version of ubuntu 10.10. Everything is working smoothly. So basically :
- installed 10.10 with usb key on HDD
- launch all update of the OS
- installed Nvidia closed driver
- update alsamixer to 1.0.23
So for now, I have in alsamixer 4 SPDIF out but no sound output from hdmi. HDMI output is well configured in the sound settings of ubuntu. I think this is linked to the ION 2 chipset and D510 proc.

bought a craigslist video card that works for me, but in trying to get sound as well as the video (which does work) on the big screen, I ended up upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04.I now have the 11.04 installed (but not the desktop. Apparently I don't have the hardware for that!), but on the big screen, I only have the background image, not the desktop panels, etc.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a TV connected to my 11.4 laptop all the time, when I boot Grub outputs its options on the TV screen, then lizard appears for a couple of seconds and then it switches to notebook monitor to continue booting. Or not. About half the time both screens, TV and notebook, go black and nothing happens.
So far I just reboot and wait until the switch from tv to monitor is successful, if that happens everything boots and loads fine. It's like unwatched milk - everything is okay until the moment you turn away and the milk boils over. Boot hardly ever fails if I sit and watch it but sometimes I get two fails in a row.
Never seen this behavior with 11.3 on the same notebook with the same hdmi always plugged in.It's a Core i5 with integrated Intel and a separate nVidia graphic card, what other info is needed? Grub? Dmesg output? Maybe there's a boot log file somewhere, too.
I've a problem with my AsRock Core and my audio over HDMI. Trying to get it work now for over 2 months.On Ubuntu 10.04 it was working with the offical Realtek HDA Intel driver for Linux but on Ubuntu 10.10 the driver installation failed.

I have an HDMI connected monitor with speakers but I don't get any sound after a fresh install. My computer ain't nothing fancy, my specifications can be found in my current board signature.
I have zero experience configuring devices on Linux. It's rather depressing not being able to listen to music.
I must say, the RPMfusion version of the Nvdia driver package work better with FC10 than they did under FC9 for me, which is to say: they work at all. Still get corrupted output after a few hours of work, but I imagine that's just the underlying weakness of the Nvidia driver bubbling up. Either way, now I have other problems:
First off, the Intel driver for my onboard video setup has stopped working entirely. The attempt to bring up X on the Intel setup gets me to the KDE login screen and locks the machine up hard (poweroff required). A look at the xorg.0.log shows that the server seems to be stuck in a loop trying to determine the valid video properties for the session.
Here's my xorg.conf, BTW. I have it setup to perform different configurations depending on which DefaultServerLayout line gets uncommented (lines 4 - 6). If anybody has a better way of doing this, I'm all ears. While we're on my xorg.conf, pleas view lines 64-67 and/or 75-77. This is my quickie way of changing drivers (again, all ears) which brings us to the next problem, neither the nv or nouveau drivers work with my system. Interestingly enough, both drivers tend to fail in the same relative spot in the process, I think. Please refer to line 207 of this xorg.0.log with the nv driver or line 140 of this xorg.0.log from the nouveau setup. Either way, both sessions die with the same message: (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found Gotta go, x session getting corrupt,,,
I get picture through the hdmi connection of my Radeon HD 4670 card, but when I tell the system to use the audio not only do I not get anything it also speeds up any video currently playing.
View 10 Replies View Relatedi am trying to instal kubuntu 9.10 on my desktop. i have an ati radeon hd 4600 with a hdmi cable going into the 22" lcd. The problem is i cant view the whole desktop, like i can only see a part of the corner, and all of the icons are massize. The search bar at the bottom comes to half my screen size, making installation impossible to see. Plus i can only use live cd mode using safe graphics mode. i am new to linux finding this quite confusing.

That's really nice and all, but I'd rather it be sysadmin-only than have to go through several minutes of futzing around with it every blasted time I login. So, how can I make side-by-side permanent either for myself or for all the people who use my system (just me)? Thank you.
This module is only for configuring systems with a single desktop spread across multiple monitors. You do not appear to have this configuration.Since I obviously do and since I can get the desktops to spread across the monitors (after futzing for several minutes).
Is this possible: I tried everything but Gnome extends its desktop on screen2. I have an nvidia FX5500.
