Nov 14, 2010

I am unable to switch between the various TTY screens. I don't see that I am using the wrong keys or sequence but it wont take for some reason I don't quite understand. My /etc/init file is below though.

# inittab This file describes how the INIT process should set up
# the system in a certain run-level.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Touchpad Doesnt Switch Screens Dual Monitor?

May 28, 2010

Setup:Ubuntu 10.04 recently upgraded from 9.10Dell Precision m63004G RAMCore 2 DuoDual Monitor with laptop=screen0 monitor=screen1external mouse and keyboardIssue:In both 9.10 and 10.04 (I am just now trying to solve the issue) the setup works great, but not flawless.External mouse and keyboard work with no issue. The touchpad mouse on the laptop, however, will not switch from screen1 to screen0. It works fine on either screen and will go from screen0 to screen1, just will not return. One has to hook up an external mouse to get the cursor back onto the laptop screen0.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Use 10.04 Xorg On Multiple Screens?

May 22, 2010

I have Nvidia Quadro NVS 440 with four 1280x1024 LCD monitors and Ive tried to upgrade Kubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04. Everything works well at 9.10. After upgrade, system is hanging and I cannot reach desktops in all monitors. Ive tried to reconfigure x server using Nvidia-settings control panel. This doesnt work. So i tried to reinstall system from CD, because there should be something wrong with the upgrade, but the problem persist. Ive tried to reinstall with Ubuntu, but there is same problem.

My configuration of screens are: Screen 3 left of Screen 0, Screen 0, Screen 1 above Screen 0 and Screen 2 right of Screen 1, separate X screens and Xinerama enabled. Sometimes, if i reach upper edge of Screen 0, mouse will continue at the lower edge of screen 0. Screen 3 is not reachable and If I try to move mouse to it, system will hang and x server is automaticaly restarted. Ive tried to configure all screens with absolute positioning too, but this doesnt work either. My only option now is downgrade to 9.10 .

Ubuntu :: Unable To Switch From GUI To Console Mode?

Mar 31, 2011

I'm having difficulty switching from GUI to console mode. I use ctrl-alt-f1 and the screen goes blank and I see a flashing cursor but I'm unable to do anything. I can switch back into GUI mode using ctrl-alt-f7. Also at times I see the word Ubuntu with 4 dots and 2 of them are orange if that's of any use. Like the initial boot loading screen.

I've tried going back to the default display drivers and that hasn't solved it. I'm using a CRT that's connected up to my display card via a VGA > DVI converter. *I've just checked and I can't get into recovery mode either

Ubuntu :: Switch From Vista To 10.10 - Unable To Upload Files

Oct 31, 2010

i've tried making the switch before, but always end up running into some trouble that has me going back to windows. i recently installed ubuntu 10.10 and everything has been going fairly smooth, i've been using it for a few weeks with no complaints. no complaints, that is, until i try to upload files... my digicam shoots movies in avi format. i have no problem uploading these files to videos from vista, it works as it should. i cannot upload anything to videos from ubuntu. whatever i try to upload fails instantly.

i also cannot upload photos to photobucket, with the same outcome. the transfer appears to start, but fails immediately afterwards. the photobucket problem has me really intrigued, since it will upload some files directly from the hard drive, but most pics on the hard drive will still fail to upload, and all files on my sd card straight out of the camera fail to upload regardless, even though the computer reads the card and the files fine locally.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Unable To Switch To Root After PermitRootLogin Set To No For SSH

Mar 11, 2010

I followed the instructions on this page ([URL]) in order to secure my sshd and prevent anyone form accessing the server directly as root. Therefore I changed the "PermitRootLogin yes" to "PermitRootLogin no" and restarted sshd. After that root access was denied directly but for some reason I am unable to switch to root from any of the normal user accounts with "su -" because I keep getting the "Incorrect password" errors. I am sure that the password is correct but for some, to me unclear, reasons I am unable to access the root account over SSH from a normal user account. I also noticed that after that I lost the ability to access the server as root over SFTP. why I am unable to generally use the root account after doing the named changes to sshd_config/ I am running CentOS 5.4 with the newest update.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Use Mouse Or Switch Windows In Unity Or Gnome?

Jul 13, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu desktop, since I had been running my server as Ubuntu Server on a guest OS on Windows 7 and never really used the Windows part of the computer. Since then, I've been unable to use the mouse in a graphical environment for longer than a few minutes without it starting to act crazy. The mouse moves around normally, but won't respond to clicks (left, middle, or right) but the keyboard shortcuts still work. I'm not sure if things have changed since I last used Gnome though, but Alt+Tab is not working for me either when this happens. Sometimes, the active window is even behind another window, and isn't pulled to the foreground.

After a bit of frustrated clicking and jamming of buttons on the keyboard, sometimes the mouse kind of starts working because I'll notice a right click menu open. But, I am still unable to move windows or click on them to bring them to the foreground, and my mouse presses only work on the current window. And then, eventually, after about a minute or so, it'll stop respond again too.

I saw in one thread that someone had dead spaces where he couldn't click, so he installed and ran Gnome and that fixed it, but I tried using Ubuntu Classic and it is still giving me the same behavior. I'm actually posting this message now in links, because I can't use Firefox or Chrome well enough when it's hidden behind other windows.

My wireless switching mechanism has just gone the way of the saints but Belkin has supplied a software solution for this occurrence. There is a small app called Fling (surprising) that allows me to switch from the XP machine to the Linux machine but nothing to switch back to the XP. What I need to know is there a similar app for the Linux computer. (NB I have tried Synergy but have no idea how to set it up - I've been told that synergy might work).

When I use a little helper window (like the find and replace dialog) in OOo 3.2 on 10.04 UNR it always comes up maximized, which is kind of irritating, because I have to restore it before it's usable. It's weird that such a window should even have a maximize button, but there you go. No biggie, clearly, but if anyone knew of a workaround that would be great! They all have their own start menu and panel bar. I cannot move a window from screen to screen. I have to open a new window in that screen and then it is stuck on that screen and can not be move any where else. When is this going to be fixed because until it is unfortunately Micro Slop will still have my business. I am a power user and enjoy my 4 screens when they work in unison, not as individuals.

Ubuntu :: Virtual Box VM And Dual Screens?

Jul 18, 2010

I use multiple screens on my computer in work which is running Ubuntu 10.04 it runs great apart from the VBox VM. I run a windows VM as some apps we use in the office are not compatible with ubuntu and I can't get them running right in wine. In single screen mode I use the VM in 'seamless' mode so the windows start menu just sits on top of the ubuntu panel and I can flip from ubuntu to windows as I please in the same interface (im sure anyone that uses VBox will understand what I mean).

The problem comes when I use a second screen. If I try to run in seamless mode on the main screen it works ok apart from the fact that the windows start menu sits behind the ubuntu panel instead of on top of it. When I move the VM to the second screen I cannot run it in seamless mode at all, if I try the resolution goes hay wire and I only get half the screen (if im lucky). So I just run it in full screen mode which stops me from dragging windows from within the windows VM back to the first screen.

What I want to be able to accomplish is to run the VM in seamless mode on either screen but be able to drag windows accross both screens. Is that at all possible?

Ubuntu :: Get Desktop To Stretch Across Two Screens?

Jan 28, 2011

I am trying to get my desktop to stretch across two screens. (for reference, I am using Kubuntu 10.10) When I start up the system, it duplicates whatever is on the primary monitor onto the the secondary. Initially, playing with the options in the GUI I thought I had it figured. Under System Settings < Display and Monitor < Size and Orientation there is an option that lets me set the position of my secondary monitor to the "right of" the primary. However, on restarting the computer, this resets to its initial setting of "clone of" the primary.

So I did a bit of reading and found something I could put in the command line:

Code: xrandr --output DVI-I-2 --right-of DVI-I-1

Which again fixes the problem, but only for that given session. On restart we are back to the same scenario. A bit more reading tells me that putting things in etc/rc.local executes them on start up so I shouldn't have to each time I turn on my computer. Except that putting it in there didn't do anything. While I am reasonably pleased with myself having learned as much as I did in this little exploration (previously, the only command line thing I knew how to use was apt-get), I am feeling pretty frustrated at this point.

Is there somewhere else I should be putting this other than (or in addition to) etc/rc.local? Do I need to put something other than xrandr thing in there to make it execute?
