Ubuntu wont detect my screen (mag bf22) correctly..that causes poor resolution (1152*864 max) my screen is able to at least a 1600*1200 resolution (witch i use in my windows boot ) is there anything i can do in order to fix or increase the resolution ?.. i have already installed the drivers correctly

trying all sorts of xorg.conf settings and searching out drivers. Out of the box, Debian moves the cursor when I touch the screen and move my finger across it. I have bought a device with 10.1" capacitive touch screen. I have tried OpenSuse Milestone 5 (future release). It works great, but...My capacitive touch screen positioning cursor correctly but when I touch screen, it is like I clicking mouse for 9 times. One touch of icon of a program... and it opens it 9 times. I looked in hardware information in yast and the name of my touch panel in the following:

It works good, but not useful, because I cannot really touch any icon with my finger, it will open it 9 times...
I have installed ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop.But whenever I keep the cursor on any desktop icon like folder or tabs of some windows it fails to detect the icon and hence i am not able to click it.The minimize maximize buttons are also not recognised and I have to use keyboard shortcut.Is there anything wrong with the system itself?Its a slightly old one having p4 processor and 1 gb ram.
View 3 Replies View RelatedBasically i had this problem before 11.04 as i tried the online update to 11.04 which kept failing so used a CD to update.Sometimes my internet works great, which only lasts a couple of minutes until its slow, and to the point where it cant even get 1% on a ..... upload.Since i duel boot i have tried the internet on Windows and it seems to work absolutely perfect.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I currently have an issue with the 10.10 (64-bit) installer in that it does not recognized the Crucial SSD drive I have installed on my box correctly (long story and ultimately a separate topic but if anyone is interested). Initially I thought it was an issue with the hardware and RMA'd the drive however now realize that the likely culprit is the Ubuntu installer itself.
In order to test the rest of the hardware while waiting for the RMA'd drive I installed Ubuntu on a separate partition on the box and thus have a working secondary partition that I can boot from. From within Ubuntu it seems I am able to access/format the SSD correctly (using gparted); it seems that it is only the installer that cannot handle the drive...
Is there a way that I can install Ubuntu on a second partition from within Ubuntu itself?
I've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.
Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.
When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card.What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?
my last hard drive had bad sectors so we got a new hard drive from newegg. this is a brand. new. hard drive. never been formatted before. so i started with the windows setup disc to get it to partition the drive and give kubuntu (working off 10.04 its ordered from canonical) something to work off. it still didn't work. so i got gparted on here to see if it could - im running off the live cd - do anything with it and i find that kubuntu doesn't even recognize there is a hard drive there. i got into the terminal to check the sudo lshw -C disk thing and it swears 'C' is my cd drive.
My bios is also as high as it can go, they stopped making my board. so. any ideas? i cannot install windows as i have lost the key so getting this installed and fixed has to be done through ubuntu on a live cd.
i have a problem i have two ubuntu programs on my hard drive. i have old 9.4 and i installed new 9.10 in a partition. i was unable to get old 9.4 to work correctly and i installed new in fear of looseing pics and files. what do i do.

Since then, my system doesn't detect its own screen. So I have to escape as the start of reboot and go to a recovery mode and select failsafe screen. Ubuntu then set to lowest graphic mode. It's no way to keep a set up for the long run. I've tried to reinstall Ubuntu from a CD but that doesn't work. .
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a virtual machine running Ubuntu server 9.10 in Hyper-V on a windows 2008 server.
However it can't detect the network adapter (Virtual NIC uses Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet).
After doing some research on a Windows forum i was told to try using the legacy network interface. Annoyingly 64bit edition doesn't seem to have this.
Anyone know how i can get around this?
I tried to install VirtualBox 32 bit on my 64bit Fedora11 OS. I took the 32 bit version as I want to run a 32bit software. I collected all information I could get from other forums. That's what I did: I downloaded and installed [URL]

Now I got stucked with the error Qt WARNING: QGtkStyle was unable to detect the current GTK+ theme. I searched for qt or qgtkstyle on my system and found files containing both but don't know what to do here.
I started using Ubuntu in 2006 and it provided me with pretty much all the functionality I needed with a very intuitive interface and and organization (esp the package system.) I replaced all my windows installations with Ubuntu and never looked back.. I consider myself a somewhat computer savvy user but with each new release, I've encountered numerous problems that severely disrupt the normal functionality of a basic OS and cannot be solved in a straight-forward manner. Some example I'll list:
1) GRUB. I got a new Dell Laptop with Windows 7 and I wish to dual boot.I repartition and install Ubuntu 9.10. OK, so far so good. When Lucid came out, I upgraded. Then I reboot and I'm greeted with garbled letters instead of the usual GRUB screen. So far, I have not been able to resolved this issue other than to use the live CD to boot and/or use Supergrub to manually boot to Linux or Windows. I'm now dependent on this CD to properly boot my system EVERY TIME. I've even tried reinstalling GRUB after successfully booting using the CD but grub still refuses to return (now I'm greeted with "Missing Operating System" if I'm not booting using a CD.)
2) WiFi. The only internet access available at my apartment is WiFi. Unfortunately, wifi does not work out of the box on my system. Downloading the third-party drivers to get wifi working REQUIRES an active internet connection (lame catch-22 situation.) So I'm forced to plug into the wired ethernet connection at my workplace instead every time I need to reinstall and restore my internet connection. With so much of the world converting to WiFi, it really makes sense to have access to WiFi after installing from CD.
I don't care if I have to download a much larger CD filled with tons of useless junk; if anyone know of any sort of "expanded version" of the Ubuntu installation cd with a greater variety of WiFi drivers included so I don't have to go through this lame and convoluted procedure just to get my Wifi working every time a reinstall is necessary, I would need it ASAP!
I have installed on an Acer Aspire One netbook. The same problems with the Netbook Remix and Gnome.
(1) RESTART is hit and miss. It gets stuck and I have to do a hard shutdown (press the on/off switch for a few seconds)
(2) WIRELESS CONNECTION is hit and miss. The Connection Information goes missing. Have to shutdown & restart for it to work (restart never works)
(3) APPLICATIONS FREEZE all of a sudden. The mouse stops working and the keyboard stops working. I have to do a hard shutdown. Restart does not work.
(4) RHYTHMBOX launch is hit & miss. The little icon appears in the tray but I can do nothing - can't ask it to Show Rhythmbox and can't shut it down. Have to use System Monitor and kill the process there. IF MY MACHINE HAS NOT FROZEN DOWN COMPLETELY.
(5) GOOGLE CHROME and FIREFOX browsers run quickly when they start, and then, as time passes, run more and more slowly, until the freeze the whole computer.
I have been unable to get my sound in Ubuntu working correctly. I have followed ALL the steps in the Community SoundTroubleshooting page, the Sound Solutions Guide forum post, and the Ubuntu Wiki, among many other troubleshooting instructions and forum posts. I've even completely purging ALL my sound-related software and reinstalling, but no luck. The problem I've been having is one that seems to plague many Ubuntu users, but whose solution seems to be relatively undocumented, if it exists. That is, the sound often seems to stop working when a continuous audio stream is active or when a video stream is running (flash, mpeg, ogg, you name it). This is even apparent in the Ubuntu startup, where the default startup theme is often choppy on load (though I attribute this particular instance to be due to high CPU usage on startup.)
I've spent a LOT of meticulous time trying to figure out EXACTLY what is causing it, and I'm only taking to these forums after MONTHS of research and failed investigation. It doesn't necessarily seem to be a CPU-activity related error, as the sound often will cut out just playing MP3 or WAV files with almost no CPU usage. On the other hand, it doesn't really seem to be a specific software-related error, as uninstalling PulseAudio or reinstalling ALSA seems to have little-to-no effect on the problem. To date, no program has been immune from this error.....
I just installed 9.10 on my acer as a second partition. The only problem I am having is my split screen is not working correctly. They just mirror each other so I have basically 2 monitors doing exactly the same thing. No splits. My graphics card is nvidia geforce 7300 LE.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHave been using Ubuntu 9.10 since past 2 months and had similar power and screen saver options as I do now after upgrading to 10.04. ( "sleep" after 1 h, "lock screen" after 10 min, "hibernate" when "close lid" on a Dell 600m laptop)
With Karmic, Never had issues with closing the lid while the laptop was sleeping. Three times in a row noticed that if the lid is closed while laptop is in sleep mode, opening the lid results in a blank screen, HDD and CD drive spins, fan turns on. No response to keyboard and/or mouse. Pressing the power key: no response.
The only solution is to shut-down by holding the power key down for a few seconds and reboot. Cant imagine why there would be a problem, but wondering if there are others who also see the same thing and if there is fix to this. Right now, have disabled sleep and will see if problem shows up.
I have setup an OpenVPN server on Ubuntu server. I am able to connect with Windows clients. I am, however, unable to correctly connect using Ubuntu.
If the router firewall is blocking the pings to keep the connection alive, then the connection initially does not work, but will work after the first timeout and reconnect. If the firewall does not block the pings then the initial connection attempt never times and therefore the connection does not work.
Attached is the readout from the client.
The first attempt gives error ERROR: Linux route add command failed: external program exited with error status: 7
Successive attempts work, they just time out every two minutes.
I just got a new box, installed a HD, put in the CD I made of Ubuntu 8.04 from the EMC2 website.The box is a Samba 845GV with a P4 2.4Ghz processor & 256MB of RAMIt seemed to be installing correctly, but it's hung at a screen that shows a stylized Heron, it's been like this for 45 minutes.

What I've noticed is that it turns itself off after a few minutes of inactivity -- I researched this issue across the internet, and found that it's between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on who's writing about it.
I found a person who posted a DOS batch file, which (i think) continuously accesses the drive as long as the batch file is running. I'd like to find a way to do that in linux. could someone point me in the right direction?
i took a few minutes to plan it out... i think i need a loop that will access the drive (or do something to it, at least) once every minute until i close the script. I'd also like a message box that shows up that says something like "while this is open, your HDD is being accessed".
I am running 11.04 with a dual boot of vista. I am also running virtualbox (downloaded from oracles site) I installed the extension pack from their website, I have added a new filter and I am in the user group but still virtualbox will not see the usb ports or the device plugged in. The reason for running virtualbox is if I can get the usb to work, I will then remove vista completely from my system and just virtualbox for the only two programmes that do not work in Ubuntu.

That worked fine, until I realised that I didn't like KDE, and decided to get the gnome-based Gnacktrack (based on Ubuntu 10.10, so I'm fairly sure they work the same). I also have a harddrive from an old laptop that I've scrapped with Ubuntu 10.4 that I run in the laptop, and fpr some bizzare reason, neither operating system is able to detect the wireless card. It worked fine with Backtrack (based on Noppix I believe), and I'm curious as to why the wireless card hates Ubuntu so much. I know that it's unable to detect the wireless card because on start-up it says "Unable to detect WMID device". I even added the wireless card from my scrapped laptop to the laptop, and that NIC was detected just fine. (though I can't use it because the antenna won't reach the slot for the secondary NIC)

The restart, suspend and shutdown buttons are not operational. However, if I power down the computer manually and restart the login screen comes up normally.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSince moving from centos 5.6 to fedora 15 a week ago I have been unable to get Last Pass firefox addon to work correctly. Those of you familiar to last pass will probably have seen the error message before in a variety of situations, namely "An error occurred while attempting to contact the server. Please check your internet connection." This error appears as soon as you log in (which it does manage to do) but instantly loses authentication - seems like the cookie expires almost instantly and therefore all saved sites/passwords require re-authentication with LP to use.
No network configuration has altered since the OS change, but F15 comes with firefox 4 rather than 3.6.x in centos. I know the last pass plugin should work with FF4 and have read suggestions about SSL/TLS version settings (which are 3.0 and 1.0 respectively) and disabling SELinx. Neither of these have made any difference.
In a nutshell: If the computer goes to blank screen (set that way in screensaver settings) I can hit a key and get the unlock dialog. However, if I walk away for longer and come back, I can't get the machine to wake up. It is powered on, but nothing comes up on the screen. I can't get other terminals by using ctrl-alt-FunctionKeys, either. I CAN, though, ssh into the machine from my desktop computer, and that works normally.I've installed 10.04 off of a live CD onto my Toshiba Satellite A45-S250 laptop. I had originally tried upgrading from 9.10 on the machine, however it wouldn't boot after the upgrade. The live CD also originally wouldn't work for me until I used a work around that involved adding "i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa" to the boot command line of the "Install Ubuntu" option of the live CD. This caused the CD to install, and now the laptop works properly.
The computer boots normally now, but on shutdown, the screen does go all "squiggly" before turning off.This doesn't interfere with the shut down or start up, though.I can post whatever logs or such that would help, but would have to be told what is relevant here. I've been using ubuntu on and off on this laptop since sometime in 2005, and have never experienced an issue like this.
I've try ubuntu lucid in DELL Inspiron, but touchscreen utilities is not run.
How can repair it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell M6400, using Wubi for Windows 7 x64. My ISP sets my router password at source, meaning I'm unable to disable wireless encryption (which is WPA 2 Personal). That being said, I don't seem to be able to detect *any* wireless networks (I can still connect via ethernet, which does not require the password).
I'm not certain where the problem is, so I'll outline my steps and what the results were:
Under "System > Administration > Hardware Drivers" I have the "Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver" installed (for BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, and BCM4322- based hardware)
The driver is activated and currently in use. When I type
