View 9 RepliesAfter a lot of work I succeeded in making my Icon 225 Mobile Broadband working under Linux, so I immediately took advantage of this by updating my system. But unfortunately not everything went well. I have to say something:in Linux when you solved a problem another one pops up. And this is what happened to me. The first problem was the following error message: PackageKit Error repo-not-available: File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium [URL]
It seems that in the Online update system there is a error: or the address is wrong or something is not working as it should be. Anyway I got over it and the system started to download the updates and so on. At the end the system asked me to reboot and I did it. Unfortunately a cold shower was waiting me : the KDE interface did not work anymore, the only thing I could see was something like a fog all around the video. The mouse cursor was a dark square. I was still able to hear the welcome sound so I deduced that only the graphic interface was corrupted. I rebooted again and when the system show me the booting choices:
1) Desktop opensuse 11.3-2.6.34.7-0.3
2) Failsafe opensuse 11.3-2.6.34.7-0.3
3) windows 1
4) windows 2
5) Floppy
I chose this time the second one (I think it is like a safe mode)and fortunately it worked but the system looked like having lost brightness (I think this choice change the card driver). Now I do not know why the KDE inrface got corrupted, because I download everything from the opesuse website, so no strange repository has been installed. I checked in the little manual supplied with the DVD and I found the following suggestion: If the KDE interface got corrupted please try to remove the cache files of the KDE desktop using the following command rm -rf /tmp/kde-user /tmp/ksocket-user
I have a 3dsp pci wifi card, and the last kernel it supports is Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-(21-24) I want to update but dont want to accidentally update the kernal.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy primary OS (Windows 7) which I had installed before ubuntu is not in the Grub Menu and I can't figure out how to boot it up. (It's not in menu.lst either)
I just installed ubuntu, I partitioned it by shrinking my window 7 partition (in windows) and formatted the free space for ubuntu. I can see the windows file system and access the files (143 GB Filesystem in Places) but I can't boot to it
I've been using a version of the Vista cursor that I made green since I got Ubuntu 9.10. Unfortunately, when I switched to Ubuntu 10.4, it... broke. The green cursor shows up in firefox and the busy cursor works sometimes, but most of the time it just used the normal DMZ-White cursor. What changed? How can I fix this?I only made one cursor size since that's all I would need. Do cursors need to support multiple sizes to work now or something?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI can't boot into my debian anymore, and I have no idea what is causing this Here is the output of dmesg in the attachement.

In my startup following line is present:

In my repository settings I have chacked that it should llok for updates daily.
I was able to successfully install Tweetdeck and Adobe Air using the instructions here: http://www.technixupdate.com/install...-ubuntu-linux/
BUT after I closed the program, when I tried to re-open it, it wouldn't load anymore. It would show that it is "Starting Tweetdeck" but it would not lead to anything - it would just close.
So I tried to uninstall everything and re-install from scratch. But the same thing happened - the program would not load.
I tried to isolate the issue by trying to install another AIR application. When I double-click on the icon or click on install using Adobe AIR, it would not run. So that only means that the issue is with Adobe AIR.
Here's what I did code...
It will then load the installer. Go through the step-by-step process until it's finished.
Install Tweetdeck again (Just double-click on its .air file).
After an update firefox doesn't load anymore. Whenever I try to install anything apt-get fails and warns me about broken firefox packages. It is mentioning firefox branding and chrome something (the latter seems to have gone away after I removed firefox via synaptic) apt-get install -f fails also.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was running 10.04 on my Asus EEE PC. Today I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10, but with lots of regrets. The complete desktop changed. I don't even know how to access the system settings anymore. I just wanted to start up the Twonky Media server from my personal folder again, which resides in my personal user folder, but I cannot find the folder at all! Shame on the Ubuntu team to throw around the user experience so much. The Ubuntu Linux distribution has gone back to a nerdy level, I hoped it had recovered from that. Make-the-user-feel-at-home! Is that so difficult?
Where is my Favorite group, where is my System group, where is my personal Home user folder? I'm sure I can find them on my own, but it's a shame that my user experience has been taken into a rolercoaster. Why make it so difficult on the user Ubuntu, why?
After upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 I can't mount anymore my crypted disk image.I've an old backup of this image, but when I try to mount it, system give me same errors.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis morning I switched my machine and the Update Manager prompted me to upgrade. So, as usual I did it. After upgrade it asked me to restart. Since then id didn't boot anymore. Now I have blank screen with a blinking cursor ... immediately after the BIOS screen, so it looks that no OS is loaded.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had Ubuntu 8.04 & Windows Xp installed on by 80GB Hard Disk by giving 40GB each to Ubuntu & Xp. Due to some problem in Windows Xp (nothing new) i had to reinstall Windows Xp. I had taken backup of all data on Windows & Ubuntu fully knowing that Grub would go haywire.
Now i want to install Ubuntu 10.04 on the 40GB that was earlier occupied by Ubuntu 8.04 from CD.
I'm posting the output of sudo fdisk -l

I am running 10.04 32-bit on my compaq nc6320 laptop and I am just wondering if there is an easy way to do the upgrade to 10.10 but upgrade to the 64-bit kernel.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi want my ubuntu 10.10 to be updated to the new version. But,before updating i would like to know few things such as should i need all my software's to be installed once when i upgrade to the new version.
I have oracle installed in this 10.10..So,will upgrading to the newer version needs the installation of Oracle again?
Just before Lucid was released, I installed karmic on a vanilla VM in 64-bit mode, and all was good. Did a desktop setup and afterwards installed Eclipse, and I was happy: A new system for coding on-the-go! Now, after upgrading to Lucid with do-release-upgrade -d, I can no longer enter my password on X login. The keyboard just doesn't work for some reason. When I enable the onscreen keyboard, and click my password, I can login. The strange thing is that my keyboard works like a charm after I've logged into my X session?
View 7 Replies View RelatedIt used to work perfectly on Ubuntu 9.10 but I get "input not supported" in the secondary monitor.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with the partitions and accidentally y deleted the ubuntu partition! I have Windows 7 as a dual boot but I can't access to that OS anymore. The message that I get is: error: no such partition. grub rescue>
View 5 Replies View RelatedI would like to upgrade my linux distro, since I'm using Karmic Koala and it is no longer supported anymore. However, upgrading via the updater always breaks my system, so I want to do a clean install. However, I have a LOT of programs installed in this machine, including a good number of games. Otherwise I think most of my data is neatly confined to my home folder, which I can easily transfer via external hard drive.
How do I get all my programs over, however? Like my PDF printer, for example, or all my games, or Inkscape, or Skype, or any number of things that I have installed. Especially WICD. I can never get my wireless internet to work without WICD. I will make a list of my programs beforehand, just in case something goes wrong, but is there any kind of less painful and time-consuming way to do this than going back and installing every program all over again from scratch?
well my problem is as follows: on ubuntu lucid I ran:

OK, I've learnt my lesson and won't update ubuntu anymore, since it's the second time i'm encountering serious problems after updating it. But please if somebody can, please help me fix this now. I need my os with all my settings back as it was. I've seen that my /home partition is fine, and the root partition has less files/folders than the live cd root partition has, so I believe that only some important system files went missing up to now.
i installed ubuntu 10.04 and after installation it had automatic updates i did that updates ter wer around 150 updates after these updates the output sound is gone. it is detecting my sound card and its not muted in alsamixer.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi just did a reinstall of 9.10 and am having a few problems.
1. hardware drivers for the wireless modem are updated, but not functioning. the driver screen says it's activated, though.
2. when i do to install java (following the instructions at http://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/java), i get the following error: "mv: cannot stat"<file info and move to directory>"
When I try to update I get THIS at about half way. I have no clue what the problem is.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 some weeks ago and after some minor tweaking everything has been working fine. But all of a sudden, it seems after some package upgrades, I'm experiencing strange behavior: The first thing I noticed is that after reboot the default application that should be kept in the Unity Launcher have all disappeared. The unity launcher doesn't hide itself anymore. The unity launcher does not react to changes I make via the 'System Settings'->'compizConfig settings manager'->'Ubuntu unity plugin' menu (icon sizes in launcher, hiding method, etc.). Even after logout/login or reboot the changes aren't applied, although the corresponding settings in the configuration menus remain changed.
One application that used to work as a charm started giving the following error on startup: The program 'VESTA' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 489 error_code 3 request_code 138 minor_code 4) Since yesterday everything was still working properly and today I get this strange behavior, it seems that something must have changed in between. The only changes on the system in the last 24 hours are the upgrades of the following packages:

I just completed a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 from USB (On a Toshiba portege m200). The installation went fine, and I updated the packages and rebooted when asked to do so, but when the computer was starting again the Ubuntu logo became wierdly deformed and then nothing happened. After 5 minutes I hard-rebooted it (Is that what its called? I held down the power button). And booted up in recovery mode. Again the computer froze, with this message as the latest on screen:
Code:
