This morning I switched my machine and the Update Manager prompted me to upgrade.So, as usual I did it. After upgrade it asked me to restart. Since then id didn't boot anymore. Now I have blank screen with a blinking cursor ... immediately after the BIOS screen, so it looks that no OS is loaded.
View 9 RepliesJust before Lucid was released, I installed karmic on a vanilla VM in 64-bit mode, and all was good. Did a desktop setup and afterwards installed Eclipse, and I was happy: A new system for coding on-the-go! Now, after upgrading to Lucid with do-release-upgrade -d, I can no longer enter my password on X login. The keyboard just doesn't work for some reason. When I enable the onscreen keyboard, and click my password, I can login. The strange thing is that my keyboard works like a charm after I've logged into my X session?

When I click suspend, a tty1 terminal screen appears, exactly as you would hit ctrl+alt+F1, with the exception that no input is possible. I'm a newbie and an Ubuntu fan but I absolutely have no idea how to solve this...
View 5 Replies View RelatedI can connect to the internet on Win7 without issue. Boot to Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 & it works sometimes & sometimes it doesn't.
I've attached 4 screen photos; 2 when internet is working (Working ifcomfig & Working route -n) & 2 when internet is NOT-working (NonWorking ifcomfig & NonWorking route -n).
The 1st I notice when looking @ working ifconfig is line 3 under eth0, inet addr:192.168.1.5 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0, is missing on NonWorking ifconfig.
I have dual boot Windows XP pro SP3 / Ubuntu 9.04 and I only use the Windows to download torrents because the download speed on Ubuntu is terrible...
But by accident I pressed the power button when I was downloading in Windows and since then Windows won't boot anymore. Is this a Windows problem or is it maybe that it srewed up my grub? Because I can still select Windows in the grub menu but it stops at "Starting up".
I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I like it a lot. However, there's a graphical error which started to happen after the very first bootup. The startup screen (the purple one with the 5 dots that appear) isn't showing anymore. It is replaced by some console technical guff scrolling down my screen (which isn't a problem, because Ubuntu itself works fine, but it just looks a bit rough). Again, on shutdown, it displays some amalgamated mix of more technical jargon, and a terribly lo-res version of the shutdown screen.
Is there any way I can fix this?
I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my custom built AMD Athlon FX-53 system to use as a web server. I downloaded the AMD64 desktop version and whenever I boot to the CD it'll go through the loading screen, bring up the install background and then the mouse cursor will appear. After that the mouse cursor keeps switching between the loading one and the regular one and it never fully loads the installer.
The system specs are:
AMD Athlon FX-53 @ 2.4 GHz (Stock)
1 Gb OCZ PC-3200 ram (2x512)
PNY Verto FX5200
Western Digital 40 Gb IDE hard drive
based off an Asus SK8V motherboard (Skate 5 to me...)
I was able to install the 32-bit version and I've tried 2 burns, one on a CD-RW and one on a CD-R and the checksum is the correct one based on whats posted on the site.
My system doesn't boot anymore, when I turn on the laptop, instead of the normal grub screen, i get the following:

I tried also to make a bootable usb w/ unetbootin but all the distros failed to load w/ a syslinux boot error message so I really need to fix the existing debian installation to get access to my files i need for the university, it's debian stable (6.0.4) on hp mini 210 ....
I've installed kmod-nvidia on my F12 system and now it doesn't boot anymore. I just receive a black screen with a blinking '_' on top of my screen immediately after i choose F12 in my grub menu. (I have a Nvidia 8800GT.)
I've tried to run the following command after the installation but it didn't work: [url]
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
So I didn't blacklist nouveau or anything else. I just foolishly thought it was going to work.
Now I can't boot my system anymore. Is there any way to solve the problem? Or can I remove kmod-nvidia using a live cd? How?
After burning the DVD of F11 for AMD64, I boot from it. After some choices, instead of going to read from the DVD it connects to the internet and tries to download packages. After some time it fails to read and goes into a loop for trying to read. If I interrupt this and skip the network section, it reports it can't connect to the internet. Why does it want to connect to the internet anyway when I've booted from DVD ? It didn't do that on x86.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a /boot partition, and the online update process has downloaded the upgrade to /boot/upgrade. The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.

It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.
Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?
It never notifies me about any updates.
In my startup following line is present:
update-notifier --startup-delay=60
In my repository settings I have chacked that it should llok for updates daily.
After an update firefox doesn't load anymore. Whenever I try to install anything apt-get fails and warns me about broken firefox packages. It is mentioning firefox branding and chrome something (the latter seems to have gone away after I removed firefox via synaptic) apt-get install -f fails also.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was running 10.04 on my Asus EEE PC. Today I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10, but with lots of regrets. The complete desktop changed. I don't even know how to access the system settings anymore. I just wanted to start up the Twonky Media server from my personal folder again, which resides in my personal user folder, but I cannot find the folder at all! Shame on the Ubuntu team to throw around the user experience so much. The Ubuntu Linux distribution has gone back to a nerdy level, I hoped it had recovered from that. Make-the-user-feel-at-home! Is that so difficult?
Where is my Favorite group, where is my System group, where is my personal Home user folder? I'm sure I can find them on my own, but it's a shame that my user experience has been taken into a rolercoaster. Why make it so difficult on the user Ubuntu, why?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 some weeks ago and after some minor tweaking everything has been working fine. But all of a sudden, it seems after some package upgrades, I'm experiencing strange behavior: The first thing I noticed is that after reboot the default application that should be kept in the Unity Launcher have all disappeared. The unity launcher doesn't hide itself anymore. The unity launcher does not react to changes I make via the 'System Settings'->'compizConfig settings manager'->'Ubuntu unity plugin' menu (icon sizes in launcher, hiding method, etc.). Even after logout/login or reboot the changes aren't applied, although the corresponding settings in the configuration menus remain changed.
One application that used to work as a charm started giving the following error on startup: The program 'VESTA' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 489 error_code 3 request_code 138 minor_code 4) Since yesterday everything was still working properly and today I get this strange behavior, it seems that something must have changed in between. So we install Windows 7 home premium. Then in goes the Ubuntu Disk. Ubuntu seems to think that the windows 7 partition is one big lump of unallocated space. Tried multiple re-installs of Windows 7, all concluding the same. A bit of googling told me that it has something to do with partition tables or something. I even tried to use Gdisk to delete Gpt from the windows disk, which - as I have absolutely no idea what any of it means, - resulted in me screwing up the entire Win7 partition hence win7 not being able to boot anymore.
i've seen on the internet include a lot of technical garble which I don't understand. I've been using Linux for a while, but as far as partitioning and dual booting is concerned, it's always gone smoothly for me up until now
I've spent a frustrating afternoon trying to install Xubuntu 10.04 x64. I had already installed Win7 Pro 64, and have been attempting to install on a separate hard drive. It wouldn't even boot into Xubuntu install. Figured a bad burn on the Cd so I reburned the image I had down loaded using Ktorrent. It wouldn't boot either. I swapped out the DVD burner. Still no go. Redownloaded using Ktorrent including the torrent. Wouldn't boot into the installer.
I did a fresh burn. Still it wouldn't boot to the installer. I then downloaded Xubuntu again but from a mirror and not using Ktorrent. Good MD5SUM. Burned it again on another computer. Still wouldn't boot into the installer. I burned a copy of Kubuntu 10.04 x64 and it installed with no difficulty. I've installed Xubuntu 10.04 x86 several times on other computers win no difficulty. But I have 8 Gb of RAM on this machine and want to use Xubuntu 64.
I can't boot into my debian anymore, and I have no idea what is causing this Here is the output of dmesg in the attachement.
View 14 Replies View Relatedi wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

I tried to install Ubuntu on a USB HDD on my Macbok Pro 5.3. Everything seemed to be fine, but while rebooting the computer, OSX doesn't start anymore. So, I would say I erased the boot sector of the internal HDD or something similar but I'm not an expert. My internal HDD seems to be fine: One 200 MB FAT32 partiton partition labeled EFI and with the boot flag, One HFS+ partition for the system. I tried to boot with the Snow Leopard DVD and run the Disk Utility to make a "repair". The repair was fine, but the Mac still doesn't boot anymore. (Forget Ubuntu, it's only OSX related, I'll try again Ubuntu only when I'll be able to boot OSX again).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using Karmic since November and standby/sleep has always worked fine. Some weeks ago, it stopped working fine.
After a reboot, I can put the system in standby only once. If I try standby after that, the system seems to do a normal standby, but it resumes at the moment the fans would normally stop working.
I tried different things like the s2ram program, pmi action sleep, etc. I went to the BIOS and tried a number of things, one was succesfull: disable USB. When USB is disabled I can go into standby every time. When I enable USB again (even with no devices connected), standby only works once again.
So, how can I disable USB at the moment I go into standby?
