Ubuntu Installation :: OS Disappeared After Updating
Jun 1, 2010
well my problem is as follows: on ubuntu lucid I ran:
[Code]....
OK, I've learnt my lesson and won't update ubuntu anymore, since it's the second time i'm encountering serious problems after updating it. But please if somebody can, please help me fix this now. I need my os with all my settings back as it was. I've seen that my /home partition is fine, and the root partition has less files/folders than the live cd root partition has, so I believe that only some important system files went missing up to now.

I had a problem with moving the panel, and in order to be able to move it I had to delete a couple of launchers. I have now lost VLC (Video LAN Converter), it is installed, but has gone from system/preferences/main menu so I can't start it or even put it on the menu or create a launcher. If I use Ubuntu Software Centre to un-install and re-install it it still doesn't appear.

I installed a dual boot system by installing Win7 and then Ubuntu 9.1. All fine until I needed to reinstall Win7. Now Windows has made itself the only OS. I presume that it has supperceided the GRUB. How (where) can I put the Grub back - (bearing in mind that the only way to run Ubuntu is to run it fron CD)?

I installed VMWare Player 3.1 on Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and had the program show up in the applications menu. I opened and ran a prebuilt virtual machine without any problem. After shutting down the system, the next morning Player is gone, if I try to reinstall it shows that it is already installed, and if I try to open the virtual hard drive, it says that no applications is associated with that file type. There is no Player in the list of applications.

I have a clean installation of 11.04 Alpha 3 and have Virtual Box on it with XP running. Along with XP, I have installed there my Thunderbird with no problems.
This morning, I have upgraded the system from Alpha 3 to Beta release but I forgot to backup my important files [files stored on my Thunderbird installed on XP Guest OS ]. I have there really important things to restore including my mail contacts.
After the upgrade, I have found out [not curious about this] that the Virtual Box was not installed on my upgraded beta version.
Is there a way to restore my files? Or is there a way to revert my system back to Alpha 3?

Every time I booted in 9.10, Python requested a password. I didn't plan to do any programming very soon (I'm new to Linux, although I know Unix) because I'm just learning the shell, etc, so I decided to uninstall Python through the Package Manager. I selected all of the installed Python modules and when I clicked "Apply" I was informed that there was one module (Python minimum something) that would seriously effect the whole system, so I unchecked that module and then ran the uninstall. When it completed, Firefox was gone, the two music players I had installed where gone, I couldn't log out and when I try to reboot I get a message "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode" and I go through several other menus, but I still can't get the system to boot.I assume a reinstall is in order, but should I "clean up" any of the remaining Linux modules/partition? And what's the best way to do that?

I had Ubuntu 8.04 & Windows Xp installed on by 80GB Hard Disk by giving 40GB each to Ubuntu & Xp. Due to some problem in Windows Xp (nothing new) i had to reinstall Windows Xp. I had taken backup of all data on Windows & Ubuntu fully knowing that Grub would go haywire.
Now i want to install Ubuntu 10.04 on the 40GB that was earlier occupied by Ubuntu 8.04 from CD.
I'm posting the output of sudo fdisk -l
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 2611 20972826 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 2612 9729 57175335 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 2612 3916 10482381 7 HPFS/NTFS
[Code].....
Should i delete all Linux partitions ? What and how many partitions (min.) should i make ? What partition should i use as mount ? Should i use ext3 or ext4 in all partitions ?

Quick background: I've always had problems with Ubuntu on my external hard drive, but I think it's actually with grub in Gnome - any Gnome. I had Karmic installed until after grub upgraded and a bootloader error made it impossible to log in, so I went over to PCLOS KDE.
I've missed Ubuntu and really wanted Lucid, so I tried reinstalling it to the external. Same problem. I tried PCLOS Gnome, and, yep, same - though I could reinstall the KDE version no problem. Anyway, after umpteen attempts, which included formatting the external drive in Windows (which doesn't ever recognise the external in My Computer till I do), letting Ubuntu do the partitioning, doing the partitioning myself, I finally tried to install through Windows via Wubi - still to the external drive.
It failed, and now the drive is not recognised in the BIOS, Ubuntu, or Windows (I've now installed a dual Ubuntu-Windows boot on my internal). Have I stuffed up my external drive? Is there some way I can make it recognisable (changing BIOS settings???). Do I need to supply more information?

After a recent upgrade, the red power icon in the far right of the upper panel disappeared. In its place is a half obscured copy of my user name, which appears right next to my user name (along with the chat icon). The chat icon/user name is functional, as it is supposed to be, but the half obscured user name that replaced my shutdown/restart power icon is just a bug, and has no function. Not only is it unsightly, but I miss the power icon. Yes, I can right-click on the panel and add one, but it doesn't allow me to drag it all the way to the far upper-right corner, where it is supposed to be located... I found this post in another thread: sudo apt-get install indicator-applet-session, but it did nothing to solve my problem.. I'm running 64-bit 10.10, btw, if that makes any difference.

after a lot of testing and tweaking done in natty 64 bit while running as live usb, i decided to install it clean on my laptop. everything is working fine (courtesy the time i spent to get things work in live usb)
i installed gnome shell too and now have an option of unity / gnome shell and classic.
today being the 2nd day, i got the following problems.
a) the global menu that was being displayed in unity is not working. its funny to note that firefox global menu is working but not for nautilus or any other apps.
b) conky is displayed in unity and classic desktop but not in gnome-shell. i also followed this link to get it working in start up = > [URL]
still not working. when i issue the top command, i can see that conky is listed in the processes but not displayed..

I've decided to give ubuntu another test drive now that I got a bigger and better desktop. I downloaded the latest version of ubuntu, loaded it into my usb stick and booted from it. I then clicked on the install icon on the desktop to start the installation. Everything was going ok, until I came to the partitioning part. I had already (on windows 7) created a separate partition for ubuntu which is 56GB. So I chose "manual partitioning" and selected the ubuntu partition as /home and began the installation.
Everything seemed to have went well, the window suddenly closed and then nothing happened. I waited for 15mins and still nothing happened. I decided to restart and see what happened, but I discovered that I couldn't boot into windows anymore. It said something about intel boot manager cannot find filesystem. So I decided to boot back from the usb and see if I can reinstall ubuntu, I came to the partitioning part and all the drives were gone, I couldn't see anything, it was blank.

I just installed Jessie amd64 for the first time. Few problems so far, but Alt-F2 to Alt-F6 no longer switch to another tty - there's just a black screen with a flashing cursor that doesn't respond to keystrokes. I rely on being able to switch between ttys a lot, so this is inconvenient.
I've searched and found a workaround for grub2, but I'm using grub-legacy (and don't want to switch to grub-pc as it's over complicated IMO). Graphics hardware is AMD 780G/SB700 (using firmware in firmware-linux-nonfree).

I just completed a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 from USB (On a Toshiba portege m200). The installation went fine, and I updated the packages and rebooted when asked to do so, but when the computer was starting again the Ubuntu logo became wierdly deformed and then nothing happened. After 5 minutes I hard-rebooted it (Is that what its called? I held down the power button). And booted up in recovery mode. Again the computer froze, with this message as the latest on screen:
Code:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16
