Ubuntu Installation :: No Window Panel After Upgrade To 10.04?

Nov 16, 2010

I just upgraded to 10.04 (from 9.10) and I must say that I absolutely hate the new window layout with the buttons on the left. I found a post that helped me switch them back to the right however, when I open any system applications (like control panel) the window has no top panel at all. Really annoying.

Ubuntu :: No Panel, Desktop Icons Or Window Manager Post-upgrade?

May 15, 2010

The upgrade appeared to go smoothly, but now logging in to a normal session just gives me a desktop wallpaper and nothing else.If I log into Gnome-Failsafe then I get a panel and desktop icons back, but still no window managerI have to initiate metacity manually.Wondered if it was something to do with my messy personalisation settings, but a new test account I created has the same problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Panel Won't Start After 11.04 Upgrade

Apr 28, 2011

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04, it appears gnome-panel won't start when I login in classic, classic with no compiz, or even failsafe/safe mode. What happens is the login will start, and I'll see an empty wallpaper with a cursor that switches between the hourglass circle spinner and a regular cursor.

If I hit alt+f2, the run dialog will appear, but immediately be killed (or something).

I am able to login with Unity as well as the recovery console. On the recovery console, when I try to launch the panel, I see this:

[blah blah blah]
b2b97000-b2ba8000 r-xp 00000000 08:05 2101405 /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgioremote-volume-monitor.sofish: Job 1, gnome-panel terminated by signal SIGABRT (Abort)

Since Unity doesn't work with focus-follows-mouse, but still tries to use focus-follows-mouse, I'm actually using IceWM to report this.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Upgrade - No Task Or Side Panel Bar

Jul 3, 2011

When I upgraded to 11.04, Ubuntu classic works fine. However, when I log into the Unity Ubuntu, all that shows up is the background, and Desktop Items. No task bar at the top (containing the time, shutdown etc) or side panel bar, with the shortcut items. Now, while I was using 10.10, I installed 11.04 as a clean install on a different partition of my laptop. Therefore I have the system requirements. However, the upgraded 11.04 causes Unity issues.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Window Decorations After Upgrade To 11.04?

Apr 28, 2011

I upgraded to 11.04 this morning, and I just flat out have zero window decorations which is a serious problem. This pretty much means that where windows happen to spawn is where they're stuck as I cannot move them ( aside from chrome which has its own I believe. )

This happens in Unity and Gnome-panel, fluxbox remains unaffected. I've completely removed, reinstalled unity and compiz several times now. That's not the problem. I've tried pointing the window decorator to /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator but I might as well be shouting at a wall for all thats doing.

running unity --reset is have zero results as well. If it matters at all my video card is an ATI HD Radeon 4650, and yes I've uninstalled the proprietary driver and reinstalled it ( I get the same results with the open source driver ). Also if it makes any difference I'm running 64 bit.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade 9.10 To 10.04 - No Window Borders - No Buttons

May 3, 2010

I upgraded to 10.04 but problems started very quickly: I can see my desktop but when I start an application, there are no window borders or buttons to close/minimize that application! They just vanished. Also, opened windows don't appear on the taskbar, so I can't switch between windows, not even with ALT + TAB. The mouse isn't an arrow anymore, but a dark cross :s

Some specifications: Dell vostro 1000, ATI Radeon IGP Xpress 1150 (128mb shared), AMD64 Turion Here is what I did during the upgrade: everything default, except for once, when it asked me what to do with menu.lst (keep the old one or replace it with the newer version) I chose "replace" (default was to keep the old one). Can that be the reason?

Ubuntu Installation :: Only Failsafe Brings Up Panel/desktop After Lucid Upgrade

May 25, 2010

I've recently upgraded to Lucid, [url]

E.g., if I log in to a normal Gnome session, I have no panel or any controls whatsoever, just the desktop background and nothing else. Mouse works, but no mouse click of any sort brings up any menu. The only keystroke combo that works is CTRL-ALT-DEL which lets me cleanly reboot.

Logging in to Gnome-Failsafe works fine (that's where I am now). Even if I reconfigure the graphics in failsafe, however, it doesn't seem to fix the problem next reboot.

First question: What do I have to do to copy the working Gnome-failsafe info to Gnome regular?

Second question: What should I do to start the graphic config again from scratch? I'm guessing my problem might have something to do with my having an older Nvidia card and getting conflicts between the proprietary drivers and the 'nouveau' open source drivers, and my current efforts to fix things have probably left a mess of config files somewhere, but I'm not entirely up on how these things are configured nowadays, and understand that /etc/X11/xorg.conf isn't all there is to it anymore. (I used to know how to muck about with this stuff, but because the Ubuntu developers have done such fabulous work in getting things so they 'just work', users like me have had the luxury of not having to worry about figuring it out ourselves for quite a while; thanks are definitely in order there!)

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To Lucid - Maximize/minimize The Window?

Aug 23, 2010

My gf recently upgraded her Dell laptop from Karmic to Lucid but has since experienced some issues with the windowing system. Is called Metacity? - I'd call it the "chrome" of the windows, eg. the title bar, maximise & close buttons etc.The description of the problem she's given me is as follows: "Every time I turn my laptop on it comes up with a small window and when I access the internet, it wont let me maximise/minimise the window.

I have to go to System/Appearances/Visual Effects and reset it to Normal. This then resolves the problem. But the next time I open my laptop, the settings have been forgotten and I have to go through the same process again." It's taken me ages to steer her away from windows but she's had a few problems since upgrading and she's thinking about heading back to the "dark side"...

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, with the default appearance of a top and a bottom panel. You know how window titles appear in the bottom panel, and you can re-maximize minimized windows by clicking on that window title?ell, those window titles are no longer appearing. So when I minimize a window, I don't know how to bring it back. The bottom panel is still there, with the "show desktop" and the trash can icon on it.But no window titles.nd I don't have any idea what I did to make this happen.

Ubuntu :: Make Active Window Appear Below Panel

So I was thinking of having my bottom panel just for harbouring active windows. I thought also to uncheck expand so it will grow larger when more windows are active. All of which is not a problem. But there's one thing stopping me from doing this.

Currently the active window stops when it reaches either panel.

[forgot to edit the green bar out. Ops. Ignore it.] So in either bottom corner nothing is displayed. How can I get the active window to go all the way to the bottom of the screen. Whilst the panel still appears above the active window? [Probably won't have transparent panel when doing this.]

Is there a nice way to get that feature on the normal version of Ubuntu?

Ubuntu :: Use A Left Panel To Show Window Selector?

I have Ubuntu 10.04 and I use a left panel to show window selector.

I have the problem that Window Selector continuously change the window list from one column to two columns of windows icons.

It is so impossible to click on a window icon to select it.

I've tried to set the size to larger and different sizes. I've tried to show or hide the panel. I've tried to group or ungroup windows.

Is there a way to tell windows selector to stay in one column windows list?

Ubuntu :: Why Window Titles Hiding Under Unity Panel

Jun 12, 2011

While I think Unity has its many ups and downs, I found it usable enough to choose it as my default desktop, after some customization. Somewhere in tweaking the desktop with ccsm - or elsewhere - I did something boneheaded. Now when a new window opens at the top of the screen, its title bar is hidden under the Unity panel. I could just wipe everything out and start over, but I kinda like the way things work on my desktop - with this exception. Where I might look to figure out what is letting windows be placed all the way up under the panel.

I did try creating a new account and looking at ccsm config export and comparing it to mine, but did not see anything useful. The only thing I changed with respect to window placement/handling, AFAIK, is disabling maximization at the top of the screen (in 'Grid' module); restoring that did not help. The problem turns out to be caused by using a window type 'panel' in my conky config. Changing the window type to 'desktop' cured the problem. Did not dive any deeper to analyse exactly what conky 'panel' windows do to interfere with Compiz/Unity.

Ubuntu :: Increase Gnome-panel Window List Size?

Oct 7, 2010

I am in the process of customizing my desktop, and I have run into a problem. As a programmer, I will invariable end up with tons of windows open. I would like to expand the gnome-panel's Window List's y size to allow more applications to show without being crunched together.

That's the way the desktop currently looks, notice the tiny Window List in the top left. That's as big as it gets. I want to expand it all along the entire left side. I have a feeling the answer is in gconf-editor, but i just can't find the right field to modify.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Panel Covers Top Part Of Application Window?

Jul 5, 2011

after upgrading to Natty (and playing around some with Unity) I noticed that the top part of the application windows are often hidden/covered by the gnome panel (see attachments).

This is particularly annoying for the rdesktop session (second jpg) which I had set up so that it gave maximum desktop size to the rdp session while leaving the panel of top. If you look carefully you see that the "panel gap" is not at the bottom of the screen, while the panel itself covers the top of the rdp window.

It seems like, that the 'anchor point' for application windows used to be '+0+24' (so just below the panel) while now it's '+0+0' in the top left corner of the desktop. I suspect that while playing with unity I reset one of the compiz options which takes care of this. But I can't find it.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Window Rules - Maximize Size Below Panel?

Jul 6, 2011

I can't stand looking at the ugly, off-center, non-themed maximize/minimize/close buttons in the maximized global menu. Is it possible to set a window to maximize *below* the top panel? Or at least to have its set fixed size be its fixed size when not maximized?

Using Compiz window rules I've been able to set a fixed size in some applications (Opera, for example), but whenever I open them, the window automatically opens as maximized. When I un-maximize, it reverts to whatever size it wants, and having to resize my windows all the time is a pain.
