I am in the process of customizing my desktop, and I have run into a problem. As a programmer, I will invariable end up with tons of windows open. I would like to expand the gnome-panel's Window List's y size to allow more applications to show without being crunched together.
That's the way the desktop currently looks, notice the tiny Window List in the top left. That's as big as it gets. I want to expand it all along the entire left side. I have a feeling the answer is in gconf-editor, but i just can't find the right field to modify.
Running Netbook Remix on a laptop and lost the app list. So now when the application is full screen there's no close button on the tab as found on the default install of Netbook Remix.I have gone into the ~/.gnome/apps/panel and backed up the configuration files to see if forcing the default would work or not
I can't stand looking at the ugly, off-center, non-themed maximize/minimize/close buttons in the maximized global menu. Is it possible to set a window to maximize *below* the top panel? Or at least to have its set fixed size be its fixed size when not maximized?
Using Compiz window rules I've been able to set a fixed size in some applications (Opera, for example), but whenever I open them, the window automatically opens as maximized. When I un-maximize, it reverts to whatever size it wants, and having to resize my windows all the time is a pain.
recently my window list in the bottom panel (where it shows all the minimized windows, etc.) got removed. When I added it back,'s not aligned all the way to the left as expected, it's more towards the middle
The issue is that Gnome will not "remember" the size and location of the window in which an app was last run. For example - I run Disk Usage Analyzer and stretch the window to be the full height of the screen and about half the width of the screen and move it to the far left of the desktop. I then close the app. The next time I run it the app comes up in a "default" window size, not the size I last used, positioned randomly on the desktop.
p.s. I should add that some apps seem to remember their prior window size/position. For example OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Nautilus.
I'm using the Gnome desktop in openSUSE 11.3. I've set the "Command" to gnome-terminal --geometry=80x58 for the Gnome terminal in its Launcher Properties. This opens a terminal of the size I want every time I click it. However, when I right-click the desktop and click "open in terminal" it opens a terminal of a much smaller size and I can't figure out how to correct this. The same thing happens when I click: File->Open Terminal from a terminal window, and also when I click File->Open in Terminal from from the File Browser. Why am I getting a much smaller window and how to fix?
I've seen this function over in KDE, but can you in Gnome (Fed12 Gnome2.28) let a window sit on top of an non-hidden panel? I've been through the config editior and can't find that choice.
after upgrading to Natty (and playing around some with Unity) I noticed that the top part of the application windows are often hidden/covered by the gnome panel (see attachments).
This is particularly annoying for the rdesktop session (second jpg) which I had set up so that it gave maximum desktop size to the rdp session while leaving the panel of top. If you look carefully you see that the "panel gap" is not at the bottom of the screen, while the panel itself covers the top of the rdp window.
It seems like, that the 'anchor point' for application windows used to be '+0+24' (so just below the panel) while now it's '+0+0' in the top left corner of the desktop. I suspect that while playing with unity I reset one of the compiz options which takes care of this. But I can't find it.
I am running CentOS 5.3, Gnome Panel 2.16.1. It seems some KDE applications just flash crazily in the windows list (task bar in Gnome panel). Usually when a new event happens to a window, it flashes to remind the user (I hate this *feature* anyway, but can't disable it...) But this time, when I switch from another workspace to the workspace that has (more than one) KDE applications (like kile and kdvi), they just simply start to flash, and the flashing window list appears on every workspace unless you click it.
I tried to disable the animation from gconf-editor, without success. Does anyone have similar issues? It is really annoying..
Is it possible to run the GNOME session manager but not have a window manager? It would also be nice to have a panel (or at least a status notification area) that was in a window, rather than a title-bar less menu bar.
The reason I want this is that I'm using my Mac's X server and logging into a VM running Fedora on the same host. And I've noticed some things, like the ability to use USB tethering, depend on a D-Bus session being active, and possibly the NetworkManager widget in the panel.

how i can change the run application window of gnome panel; i had done this with glade-3 but i dont know how to manage its signal and slots for example by clicking on a button it opens an app ,i cant manage it signals and slots
When I downloaded the ISO file thru DAP it showed up as 699.44MB but when I completed the download onto my HDD (XP SP3 & NTFS) it shows up as 716,230KB (see below) with a result when I try to burn on to a CD. I get an error that the file is too large. Whats happening, is there a solution to this?
I have asked for a video capturing software before but recommend a GOOD screen recorder where you can select the window/window size the axis and also a good editing software which will render/export into FULL 720p HD
i'm not sure for using the correct channel here but i hope someone out there can answer my little questions. 1st in older version i was able to change the settings of the terminal look as the font color, background color and so on. I was also able to define a default window size of a new terminal window. But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Is there a way how to set up the terminal default window size?
I have 4 primary partitions on my hard drive. One of these partitions has been divided into 3 logical partitions with some free space left over. The order is this: "swap", "/", "/home", and about 80GB of unallocated space. I want to incorporate that unallocated space into the home partition. I tried this by booting a live CD and starting GParted but it didn't give me the option to increase the size of my home partition or the primary partition as a whole. The only thing it would let me do is decrease the size of my home partition.
Default Ubuntu drivers work fine, but wanted to take advantage of what the new drivers had to offer.

i installed originally via admin -> additional drivers, but my desktop has shrunk about an inch around the edges (splash screen also changed)
I'm using a Panasonic Plasma Screen (XBMC HTPC) vis HDMI.
Catalyst mentions the Panasonic in Display Manager, but also mentions a Projector (1), which is also the Panasonic TV .
Resolution is set ate 1920 x 1080 and refresh 50 Hz.
I then reinstalled the ATI drivers as per [URL] , but no change (and lost screen coming out of XBMC).
I also installed the splash page fix here [URL] so now at least it looks pretty.

Finally i have installed ubuntu 10.10 on my home PC. Its working so so good i cant really imagine :-). At the time of partition due to my immaturity, i selected the size of '/' to be 10 Gb. Now i want to increase it without reinstalling ubuntu. Is there any safe way of doing it ? i did some research and came to know that Gparted might be of some help, but i will really be grateful if any of you can guide me.

I'm running FC 14 and the /dev/shm is no longer as big as it used to be (under an older FC). How can I increase the size of the /dev/shm? I tried the following

Which seemed to work, but then the system hung when I tried to use the extra space and I had to reboot. What's the correct way to increase the size of the /dev/shm partition?
I have installed ubuntu in my 500GB passport drive. The ubuntu partition size is 120GB. I want to increase the root partition size because i ran out of disk space for "/" I have installed Gparted and accidentally created new partition table. Then all my disk space turned into unallocated space. So, i immateriality rebooted my system. Then, I am not able to boot into the drive. Moreover it is not detecting in windows too. How to undone that "MISTAKE" ??
I copied 10.4 from a 20gig hd. onto an 80 gig hd with Clonezilla and now I can't get Gparted to expand the partition to include the 50 gig that is unallocated. Obviously I cloned the drive incorrectly.
I am very much new user of ubuntu and hardly know anything about linux. What is swap memory? I have dual boot system with windows7 and ubuntu 9.04. My hard disk size is 320GB and RAM is 4GB. Currently swap memory size is 4.3GB. Can I increase swap size? Will it have any advantage? How to do that?
I'm having a problem with GParted. I'm trying to increase the size of an ext4 partition but the maximum is set to 9970 MiB. The option to increase its size is greyed out. How can I fix this?
I got back to my laptop after dinner and found a blank screen with one line of text saying something about running out of swap space - I tried all kinds of key combinations but nothing worked to bring the desktop back - eventually I pressed and held the power button to shut it down - I suppose this is Ubuntu's version of the "blue screen of death"?I went to System - Disk Utility to make a 2GB free space right after the swap space. Then I tried to make that 2GB free space a swap space partition but it came back with an error
I have a dual boot machine ( win 7 & Ubuntu 10.04 ) which is reporting insufficient space on the Linux partition. I boot up into gparted and reduce the size of the the preceding partition but when I try to increase the size of the following ( linux ) partition, it won't allow it. I am trying to install Ubuntu via Wubi on a 120GB hard drive but the max installation size is only 30GB. I can NOT use a CD/DVD or USB to boot because I get an error 'BOOTMGR is missing press CTRL + ALT + Delete to restart' I'm currently on Windows 7 and have looked into fixing that error. I have tried using a Windows 7 recovery disc and followed some guides but I can't seem to fix it. So I am left with the only option of installing Ubuntu via Wubi but I want to use the entire hard drive, and not just 30GB. So what I'm asking is if there is a way to increase the size.
