Ubuntu Installation :: Mozilla And .mozilla-thunderbird Profiles When Upgrading To 10.04?
May 24, 2010
I have been doing periodic net-based dist upgrade since 7.10. Currently I use 9.10. Now that 10.04 is out, I want to upgrade to the latest LTS version by doing a clean install, instead of using net-based dist-upgrade.
Since I use Firefox, and Thunderbird, I want to keep the passwords/bookmarks I have stored in firefox, and mail/account settings (for multiple email accounts) that are in Thunderbird.
While I know I can copy the hidden profile directories for each, and back them up for recovery after the upgrade by copying them into the new 10.04 after install is complete, I don't know if this is recommended, prudent, or if pitfalls await me. Since I want to do a clean install, and, since 10.04 uses different versions of both Thunderbird and Firefox,
1. Would it be prudent to back up/use the existing profiles I have in 9.10, or should I bite the bullet and just start fresh with new profile setups when I finish installing 10.04? 2. Are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of if I will be restoring a profile of each from 9.10?
3. Or, should I continue to do net-based dist-upgrades to 10.04 so appropriate profile changes can be made by the new versions of Thunderbird/Firefox software?

Is it safe to put my old .mozilla and .mozilla-thunderbird folders from xandros 4.2 into OSS 11.3? I have apps, emails, and settings that I would like to keep. This might seem like an over precautious question, but I've broken Xandros more than once. I would hate to do it to OSS.

i have ubuntu 10.04 installed and i haven't touched anything apparently relevant in its configuration. many times, when an application opens a new window and this should receive focus, it doesn't. for example, i'm in mozilla thunderbird and i click on "write" to write a new message, and i keep waiting, "why does it take so much to open???" - until i realised that the new message window was immediately opened but it didn't get focus, it is just blinking (in a barely pereivable way) in the panel on the bottom and i have to click on it to give it focus. it is not just thunderbird - just about any program, but not always. sometimes the same happens when switching some flash player web application to fullscreen mode (such as videos or megavideo): the full screen does not appear, i have to click on the icon on the panel on the bottom.
sometimes, even more weired behaviour are observed. for example, let's suppose i have windows a, b and c open and none of them is minimized. i'll call "icon" a window's button on the bottom panel. i click alternatively on icons of windows a, b, c, a, b, c and so on. expected: every time i click on a window's icon, the window should get focus and be brought to the front. observed: when i get to window a, it toggles its state from open to minimized and viceversa, that is, when i switch from c to a, it does as if i was already on a, so instead of bringing it to front, it minimizes it; then next time i come back to a, it gets restored.

"requires installation of untrusted packages" roadblock in updating Ubuntu10.10, I downloaded and installed 10.04 LTS, hoping it would be reasonably hassle free. I've used it prior to my 10.10 upgrade, so I was very surprised to learn it doesn't support Mozilla Thunderbird email client, which I've been using on every Ubuntu version since I started with the 9.0x series.
Does any body know how to get around this? According to the Software center, Thunderbird is available for installation, but the install fails saying (no surprises!!) "Requires installation of untrusted packages"

I'm running Mozilla Firefox 3.6.17. Can someone tell me the easiest way to upgrade to a newer version? When I search on Google, I get ;lots & lots of pages & they give me 20-different instructions on how to do it & i'm confused. Not sure which command to use (There is no "upgrade" option in the "tools" area of Firefox.) Do we upgrade in the command-line?

I am using Lucid Lynx (10.04.1) and I use Thunderbird from the official Ubuntu-Mozilla PPAs:
[URL]
I see that each release of Ubuntu has only one supported version of Thunderbird - in case of Lucid Lynx it is 3.0 series. Is it possible for me to upgrade to 3.1 on Lucid Lynx through this official channel? I don't want the other two solutions to achieve this:
1. Download the latest Thunderbird directly from Mozilla website (No. Updating it manually for the next release is a pain and I don't want to get into it)
2. Upgrade to Maverick (No. I prefer LTS releases and want to stick to Lucid)

I was able to recover the bookmarks. orrupted my system doing the 9.4 to 9.10 upgrade and I am trying to rebuild the user one piece at a time.I also need to know how can i recover my mail from Thunderbird. Basically I have set up a new user and am trying to move stuff over from the old user one piece at at time until I can figure out how to fix the old user.

Skype doesn't recognise my plugged in mic and earphones. I can hear sound through the headphones from other programs. DVD burner burnt a cd for me, but seemed to pause at around 15-20% and sat there for half an hour. When I ejected CD it jumped to 100% stating it had finished. The CD was a Live Install CD for Ubuntu, which didn't work. I get I/O errors when trying to install from CD on start up. I'm guessing it didn't burn properly or isn't being read properly. I'm generally unsure of what drivers are installed for all of my hardware. Not sure if there is an auto-detection program in or for Fedora that can help, or if I will have to stop being lazy. Skype, like mentioned before. I'm not sure if this is a software issue or driver issue.
Mozilla failing to open. When clicking on the Firefox icon it wouldn't start. Shows an icon at bottom of monitor on toolbar, but disappears after 5-10 seconds with no browser opening. I had recently installed a VLC player with plugin for Mozilla while logged in as root. Wondering if I messed this one up myself? I stumbled onto updates and it had Mozilla install in there. It works again. I'm sure it won't be reoccurrent. If I were to post system specs and issues I'm having, would someone on this forum be willing to guide me through or point me in the direction of having my laptop fully operational? All drivers basically. It works as is, just not completely

Some inquiries regarding my Flash Player Plugin.
Setup: Ubuntu 10.04 (Fresh Clean Install) AMD64 Desktop - Using Firefox 3.6.9 with Flash Player Plugin
Problem: I can watch videos but cannot interface with the plugin. I.E. I cannot change volume, fullscreen, progress bar adjust, etc.
After researching for many How To's and install scripts I finally came across one that worked for my particular setup:
I got the script from the following link:
This installed successfully and I can watch videos but cannot interface with the plugin. I.E. I cannot change volume, fullscreen, progress bar adjust, etc.
I read that changes are in progress to update the 64 bit Flash Plugin for Mozilla, could this be a bug people have reported?

Still working my way FROM Windows TO Ubuntu and noticed that when I opened Firefox there was no security indicator and 'about' does not state anything about security. In windows it would have a security icon or in about it would say SSL 128 or 256. Reason I ask is I do online banking and certainly don't want to have my 'information' broadcast all over the internet. IS security handled in Ubuntu and if NOT what do I need to download/install to be sure I am protected. Did a search but could not come up with anything concrete

But as most of you may know that ..... is probably going to switch to HTML5 (so I heard) and I can not get Firefox to work with it. opening a location that is a PDF file does not result in the file being loaded in Mozilla. Nor does it result in a dialog popup asking to save or open the file. I have the Adobe Reader plugin (Adobe Reader 9.3) enabled. On Lucid I get a blank white (sometime black) page. Using Karmic Koala, everything is fine; I get a dialog asking to save or open.
Here are a few example sites where loading does not work right:

It is possible that the last one is only be accessible from a domain with online access such as a University.

I have a new laptop where I had to install Ubuntu 10.04 (8.04 wouldn't boot). All Mozilla software that I use every day (Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird) has blurry fonts in 10.04, as opposed to 8.04 where all the fonts are clear. I remember that on 8.04, Thunderbird 2 has the same blurry fonts if I use the package from Mozilla's website, but the fonts are clean if I use the Thunderbird 2 from the repository. The fonts in the content rendering (mail, web pages) are also blurred in a similar fashion in 10.04. I attach here the menus from Firefox 4.0 beta 1 on 8.04 and 10.04. It can be seen on large zoom that the fonts are not only blurry, but slightly smaller in width.

How can I turn off specific authentications? I don't want to have to authenticate every time I mount a different drive (in a different partition). (Because I can't open Mozilla, since it pulls a profile from that partition, without authenticating; and I want to have Mozilla automatically launch on startup, but it can't launch if I need to type my password to gain access to the drive first!).

how to install firefox 3.6 on my 9.1 ubuntu. About adding various repository and the a sudo apt get and all that. I can do it that way, and I am sure it will work.
What stop me to just download the .deb package from mozilla for the version I want and install it? Will it be less integrated to the system, will it not be compatible with my 64bit ubuntu? I just find it so much simpler to download a package from the web and double click on it than going through terminal, yet no-one seems to propose this option.
