General :: Restore Mozilla Saved Passwords Ubuntu/ Thunderbird Recover?
Nov 16, 2009
I have done some searches and none of them tell me how to recover or where/what the file name is for the Mozilla passwords. I was able to recover the bookmarks. orrupted my system doing the 9.4 to 9.10 upgrade and I am trying to rebuild the user one piece at a time.I also need to know how can i recover my mail from Thunderbird. Basically I have set up a new user and am trying to move stuff over from the old user one piece at at time until I can figure out how to fix the old user.
I have been doing periodic net-based dist upgrade since 7.10. Currently I use 9.10. Now that 10.04 is out, I want to upgrade to the latest LTS version by doing a clean install, instead of using net-based dist-upgrade.
Since I use Firefox, and Thunderbird, I want to keep the passwords/bookmarks I have stored in firefox, and mail/account settings (for multiple email accounts) that are in Thunderbird.
While I know I can copy the hidden profile directories for each, and back them up for recovery after the upgrade by copying them into the new 10.04 after install is complete, I don't know if this is recommended, prudent, or if pitfalls await me. Since I want to do a clean install, and, since 10.04 uses different versions of both Thunderbird and Firefox,
1. Would it be prudent to back up/use the existing profiles I have in 9.10, or should I bite the bullet and just start fresh with new profile setups when I finish installing 10.04? 2. Are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of if I will be restoring a profile of each from 9.10?
3. Or, should I continue to do net-based dist-upgrades to 10.04 so appropriate profile changes can be made by the new versions of Thunderbird/Firefox software?
Is it safe to put my old .mozilla and .mozilla-thunderbird folders from xandros 4.2 into OSS 11.3? I have apps, emails, and settings that I would like to keep. This might seem like an over precautious question, but I've broken Xandros more than once. I would hate to do it to OSS.
if you go to Edit > prefs > security and choose to show saved passwords they are displayed without entering root pw. This seems to be a huge security hole. How do we fix this?
I've spent the day developing a JavaScript file when my computer battery went flat and turned off. On reboot I'm shocked to see the file is completely blank. Is there any possible way to recover that file? Firefox cache or anything?
in my home folder i have the /.thunderbird folder, and in this folder i have the profile. ini, i have changed some things in this ini folder so that i can put my data on another partition. now i have installed lightning, i wonder where that data is installed ?
are all extesions of thunderbird installed and safed under the directory specified in the profile.ini ? or does lightning safe the appointments somewhere else.
i have ubuntu 10.04 installed and i haven't touched anything apparently relevant in its configuration. many times, when an application opens a new window and this should receive focus, it doesn't. for example, i'm in mozilla thunderbird and i click on "write" to write a new message, and i keep waiting, "why does it take so much to open???" - until i realised that the new message window was immediately opened but it didn't get focus, it is just blinking (in a barely pereivable way) in the panel on the bottom and i have to click on it to give it focus. it is not just thunderbird - just about any program, but not always. sometimes the same happens when switching some flash player web application to fullscreen mode (such as videos or megavideo): the full screen does not appear, i have to click on the icon on the panel on the bottom.
sometimes, even more weired behaviour are observed. for example, let's suppose i have windows a, b and c open and none of them is minimized. i'll call "icon" a window's button on the bottom panel. i click alternatively on icons of windows a, b, c, a, b, c and so on. expected: every time i click on a window's icon, the window should get focus and be brought to the front. observed: when i get to window a, it toggles its state from open to minimized and viceversa, that is, when i switch from c to a, it does as if i was already on a, so instead of bringing it to front, it minimizes it; then next time i come back to a, it gets restored.
"requires installation of untrusted packages" roadblock in updating Ubuntu10.10, I downloaded and installed 10.04 LTS, hoping it would be reasonably hassle free. I've used it prior to my 10.10 upgrade, so I was very surprised to learn it doesn't support Mozilla Thunderbird email client, which I've been using on every Ubuntu version since I started with the 9.0x series.
Does any body know how to get around this? According to the Software center, Thunderbird is available for installation, but the install fails saying (no surprises!!) "Requires installation of untrusted packages"
I'm running Mozilla Firefox 3.6.17. Can someone tell me the easiest way to upgrade to a newer version? When I search on Google, I get ;lots & lots of pages & they give me 20-different instructions on how to do it & i'm confused. Not sure which command to use (There is no "upgrade" option in the "tools" area of Firefox.) Do we upgrade in the command-line?
I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 (32 bit) with a clean install as the "upgrade" option in update manager failed. I'm setting up the system again and want to restore the backup I took prior to upgrading, however due to the upgrade I don't want to just re install everything. The following have been backed up
/etc /home /usr/local /var
Now there are various things that are different such as firefox 3.x has become firefox 4 Open office is gone, long live LibreOffice, my proprietary Nvidia drivers don't seem to be trusted yet, all the repositories will be different etc. I will re install all the applications fresh from the software centre, but I would like to restore all the users and passwords and their home directories,
So I don't I want to restore /etc or /usr/local en masse. I guess /var is not worth restoring either /home gets me their files but how do I restore the users and passwords? (there are about 8 registered users some of whom have different privileges) and the user ID need to be the same as they all access a NAS through nfs)
I am using Lucid Lynx (10.04.1) and I use Thunderbird from the official Ubuntu-Mozilla PPAs:
[URL]
I see that each release of Ubuntu has only one supported version of Thunderbird - in case of Lucid Lynx it is 3.0 series. Is it possible for me to upgrade to 3.1 on Lucid Lynx through this official channel? I don't want the other two solutions to achieve this:
1. Download the latest Thunderbird directly from Mozilla website (No. Updating it manually for the next release is a pain and I don't want to get into it)
2. Upgrade to Maverick (No. I prefer LTS releases and want to stick to Lucid)
i want to backup my passwords in Firefox and my email address book in Thunderbird ,both runing on ubunto 10.04 point me in right direction please ,its just i have lost them before and its a pain in the you know where to redo them all also bookmarks in FF
By gross mistake I delated ALL my emails in my gmail account. I did this from thunderbird 3 so I deleted emails in the computer and the server. Fortunately my home folder still has the thunderbird 2 folder and and weighs 1.5 gigas with files callled inbox and sent mail weighting hundred of megas, so my emails ARE there.Problem is, when I open Thunderbird 2 the emails don't appear there. How can I get them back and into Google servers too?
My address book recently got corrupted and I was unable to restore the e-mails, however looking at my abook.mab file I could see that all of the e-mail addresses were in there. I wrote a php script to create a new tab delimited text file, which you can import into Thunderbird. I used it to recover about 7300 contacts and it seems to work well for the most part. Just change 'abook.mab' to point to your actual corrupt abook.mab file or put it in the same directory as the script.
I am about to repave an FC14 box with FC15. To save a bit of mucking about, I would be keen to restore, from backup, the file(s) needed to reactivate my WiFi connection under FC15. I can always rebuild from scratch, but recovering from backup would prevent finger fumbles from making the task harder, as I have a long-winded 128-bit key.
I was putting the cover back on my Antec p180b, and I guess it got stuck and gave it a hard bump (pretty much broke the cover). As a result, one of my hard drives, a Seagate Barracuda ST3750640AS, got messed up or something. All the other hard drives are fine. It's in an LVM with another hard drive, so now I can't boot up into my computer. So I booted into the installation CD:
Code:
# find /dev/sd[a-c][1-3] /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2
[code]....
This led me to believe the partition was messed up. So I ran cfdisk, and it said something about a missing partition table or something. Additionally, instead of showing the single partition on it, it displays, from my recollection, Pri*Log. To my knowledge, this is the only problem with the hard drive. So now I need to either somehow create or restore the partition table without overwriting the data. Or get a new hard drive, and some how recover the data (LVM, partitions, and all).
I had FF and TB running on a desktop computer which was on Suse 11.0. That computer has gone to the Great Interrupt in the Sky. The hard drive still works, and I can hook it up to the replacement (laptop) with an eSATA cable. Thus, all of my email, settings, bookmarks, etc are sitting there waiting to go back to work.
My new laptop is on Suse 11.2, with the FF version which came on the DVD (from Linux Pro Magazine in February). I would like to A), load the latest vers of FF and TB onto this laptop, and B), move my older FF and TB stuff to run here. I am little more than the ignorant appliance operator so derided by Linux gurus in the "Why New Users Give Up" thread. I want to learn more, but my primary need is PRODUCTIVITY, so what I need is an 1D10T-level stepthrough to get done what I need to do.
I wonder if it is possible to have two passwords for one user account in 9.10. I have a long login password (5 words about 45 characters with spaces caps). I would like to set a shorter password for Authentication, sudo, etc. While retaining the original for logging in.In short:Have long password to login to computer.Have short password for everything after login.
I've found several how-to's, but the "problem" is that all the ones I've found up to now involve using xmodmap. I'm not radically opposed to that, but, with debian, for some reason, I don't need it. I don't have a Xmodmap file, and yet, the special keys have their "names", instead of NoSymbol (on xev). Anyone knows where the settings are, whenever one does not use xmodmap? To make things weirder I've tried to create a Xmodmap to use with arch from debian, but it get the names all wrong, for some reason. (I used xmodmap -pke > .Xmodmap). I guess that whatever debian does, it has nothing to do with xmodmap then.
But I think it may not be possible. Besides not using xmodmap, on debian I have the correct keyboard layout set without having any command (well, at least not on my openbox startup script... it could be somewhere along all those "deeper" startup scripts, on /etc/rc.#/, I guess... I'm going to check there now), while on arch I have a "setxkbmap" on my openbox startup script.
I have my email on a separate partition so that my email doesn't get destroyed when I do new linux installs (I have emails from 5 years ago now). I also keep my sylpheed email addressbooks. This partition is writable by anybody and I have also made my user the owner of this partition during each linux install (media/email). When I set up sylpheed I tell it that my email is in /media/email and then it is able to write incoming messages to that location. The problem I am having is that I make symbolic links for my addressbooks from ~/.sylpheed* to /media/email using this:cd ~/.sylpheed*rm addrbook-000001.xmlln -s /media/email/addrbook-000001.xml addrbook-000001.xmlSylpheed finds my addressbook ok on my email partition but changes that symbolic link to a file on ~ when it writes new addresses. What am I doing wrong...I want it to write new addresses to my email partition?
where does all the updated packages get saved in my computer in which I have installed Ubuntu 9.10? its really hard to download all those large files in slower Internet connection and the backups are unknown.please help me if i can save those downloaded packages in other devices.
The last few times I had to restart my server, my iptables file was never saved and I had to load it from the backup. I always issue /etc/init.d/iptables save after any changes but for some reason it loads the default iptables file that came with the server.Any ideas on what to change?I would also like to use a default boot file that starts or restarts services like squid, nscd, postfix, iptables, etc - where can I edit that?
I am not a Linux user but and learning about it in a class and thought I would check it out. My teacher said that two linux users cannot have the same passwords but never explained why?
