Ubuntu :: Upgrade Mozilla Thunderbird To A Newer Version ?

Jul 30, 2011

I'm running Mozilla Firefox 3.6.17. Can someone tell me the easiest way to upgrade to a newer version? When I search on Google, I get ;lots & lots of pages & they give me 20-different instructions on how to do it & i'm confused. Not sure which command to use (There is no "upgrade" option in the "tools" area of Firefox.) Do we upgrade in the command-line?

Ubuntu Installation :: Mozilla And .mozilla-thunderbird Profiles When Upgrading To 10.04?

May 24, 2010

I have been doing periodic net-based dist upgrade since 7.10. Currently I use 9.10. Now that 10.04 is out, I want to upgrade to the latest LTS version by doing a clean install, instead of using net-based dist-upgrade.

Since I use Firefox, and Thunderbird, I want to keep the passwords/bookmarks I have stored in firefox, and mail/account settings (for multiple email accounts) that are in Thunderbird.

While I know I can copy the hidden profile directories for each, and back them up for recovery after the upgrade by copying them into the new 10.04 after install is complete, I don't know if this is recommended, prudent, or if pitfalls await me. Since I want to do a clean install, and, since 10.04 uses different versions of both Thunderbird and Firefox,

1. Would it be prudent to back up/use the existing profiles I have in 9.10, or should I bite the bullet and just start fresh with new profile setups when I finish installing 10.04? 2. Are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of if I will be restoring a profile of each from 9.10?

3. Or, should I continue to do net-based dist-upgrades to 10.04 so appropriate profile changes can be made by the new versions of Thunderbird/Firefox software?

Ubuntu :: Window Focus Does Not Work In Mozilla Thunderbird

Aug 19, 2010

i have ubuntu 10.04 installed and i haven't touched anything apparently relevant in its configuration. many times, when an application opens a new window and this should receive focus, it doesn't. for example, i'm in mozilla thunderbird and i click on "write" to write a new message, and i keep waiting, "why does it take so much to open???" - until i realised that the new message window was immediately opened but it didn't get focus, it is just blinking (in a barely pereivable way) in the panel on the bottom and i have to click on it to give it focus. it is not just thunderbird - just about any program, but not always. sometimes the same happens when switching some flash player web application to fullscreen mode (such as videos or megavideo): the full screen does not appear, i have to click on the icon on the panel on the bottom.

sometimes, even more weired behaviour are observed. for example, let's suppose i have windows a, b and c open and none of them is minimized. i'll call "icon" a window's button on the bottom panel. i click alternatively on icons of windows a, b, c, a, b, c and so on. expected: every time i click on a window's icon, the window should get focus and be brought to the front. observed: when i get to window a, it toggles its state from open to minimized and viceversa, that is, when i switch from c to a, it does as if i was already on a, so instead of bringing it to front, it minimizes it; then next time i come back to a, it gets restored.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 LTS Doesn't Support Mozilla Thunderbird?

Dec 23, 2010

"requires installation of untrusted packages" roadblock in updating Ubuntu10.10, I downloaded and installed 10.04 LTS, hoping it would be reasonably hassle free. I've used it prior to my 10.10 upgrade, so I was very surprised to learn it doesn't support Mozilla Thunderbird email client, which I've been using on every Ubuntu version since I started with the 9.0x series.

Does any body know how to get around this? According to the Software center, Thunderbird is available for installation, but the install fails saying (no surprises!!) "Requires installation of untrusted packages"

Ubuntu :: Install Package Meant For Older Version Of Ubuntu On Newer Version?

Specifically, I want Clementine player 0.6, but the guy that installed Ubuntu on my laptop put natty narwhal alpha 1 on it (don't ask me why. I wanted maverick since its stable but he never really asked. The whole thing was kinda a surprise), and Clementine only offers downloads for Ubuntu distros up to maverick. So. Can I/is there a way I can install it anyway? Or am I forced to just use Banshee until the official Update comes out and Clementine is updated in....

Ubuntu :: Latest Thunderbird On Lucid Lynx From Stable Mozilla Channel?

Nov 11, 2010

I am using Lucid Lynx (10.04.1) and I use Thunderbird from the official Ubuntu-Mozilla PPAs:

[URL]

I see that each release of Ubuntu has only one supported version of Thunderbird - in case of Lucid Lynx it is 3.0 series. Is it possible for me to upgrade to 3.1 on Lucid Lynx through this official channel? I don't want the other two solutions to achieve this:

1. Download the latest Thunderbird directly from Mozilla website (No. Updating it manually for the next release is a pain and I don't want to get into it)

2. Upgrade to Maverick (No. I prefer LTS releases and want to stick to Lucid)

Debian :: How To Install Newer Version Of Software

I want to use apt-get to do this.

How can I do it? My current libtorrent-rasterbar package is version 0.13 (I've ran apt-get update).

I DON'T want to install anything else. The last time I added a 'sid' source to my sources.list, it installed the untested version of EVERYTHING. Due to this, I had to reinstall the OS. I don't want this to happen again.

CentOS 5 :: Install A Newer Version Of ImageMagick?

Aug 13, 2009

I have ImageMagick 6.2.8 installed on my CentOS 5.3 (64bit) system. I want to upgrade it to a newer version, because it has nice new features I need to use in a PHP script I write for a website. I tried yum, but it did not help, it didn't have a newer version of ImageMagick. Maybe I have to use some other repositories (I use CentOS and RPMFprge repositories only) or use them some other way. I ended up with downloading ImageMagick 6.5.4 RPM from ImageMagick website (it was marked as Fedora package, there's no one for CentOS there) and tried to install it. I've got some absent dependencies, but installed them all, most from the CentOS and RPMForge repositories. Some were absent from those repositories (like jasper-libs and libtool-ltdl) and I installed them from other sources. Finally, when I tried to install ImageMagick I got this error:

-bash-3.2# rpm -Uvh --test ImageMagick-6.5.4-10.x86_64.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
rpmlib(FileDigests) <= 4.6.0-1 is needed by ImageMagick-6.5.4-10.x86_64
rpmlib(PayloadIsXz) <= 5.2-1 is needed by ImageMagick-6.5.4-10.x86_64

I tried to install it using --nodeps, but got some "cpio: Bad magic" error. So, as far as I understand, I need to upgrade "rpm" package itself to make it working. Correct me if I'm wrong here. The current version of rpm is: bash-3.2# rpm --version RPM version 4.4.2.3

If I really have to upgrade rpm, then I'm not sure what to do. I have few questions:

1) First of all, what version of "rpm" package do I need? Because I don't want any conflicts. The latest version, as I can see on rpm.org, is 4.7.1. Will it work with CentOS 5.3?

2) Where do I get the right rpm for the rpm upgrade? If it's available at all. Rpm.org, as far as I can see, got source only, and I'm not sure CentOS uses their version of rpm. Where can I get the right rpm package, preferably as a plain .rpm file so I don't need to build it myself?

3) And after all, the most important. Wouldn't my system break at all if I upgrade rpm? I don't want to screw things up and end up with a broken system.

CentOS 5 :: Easier Way To Install Newer Version Of Gcc?

Nov 18, 2009

An application I'm attempting to install URL...) requires a version of gcc above 4.3.2, however the only rpms available for CentOS I can find are 4.1.2.I began trying to install a newer version via compiling the latest one from the gcc GNU site, but I started running into problems. Especially in installing newer versions of gmp and mpfr (apparently upgrading from certain versions of gmp will write over the header files, but won't change path locations for the lib files?) After examining the problem a little closer, I got worried that I was going to end up making the system unstable, so I stopped fiddling.

So my question is, is there an easier way to install a newer version of gcc? I'm not completely new to Linux, but I'm far from a master at the system, if anyone knew an easier/slightly more fool proof way of upgrading gcc.
