After having encrypted my windows partition, truecrypt overwrote my mbr, and now I can't access grub during boot, not even when I press escape I was thinking of restoring my original mbr with the truecrypt rescue cd, boot into ubuntu and copy the mbr to the ubuntu partition, how to do it.
View 2 RepliesI'm having problems getting TC to load grub2 1.97b4. When I hit ESC from the TC boot prompt, I get "no bootable partitions found".
I also booted into Ubuntu Live cd, mounted my LVM dm-crypted volume and tried to reinstall grub2 to my nonencrypted /boot under /dev/sda3 and TC still wont boot. Then I set the boot flag on /dev/sda3 and it still won't boot.
These are the commands I used to install grub2 to my /boot partition. Atleast that's what I think it did.
update-grub
grub-install /dev/sda3
grub-install --recheck /dev/sda3
I really haven't used Fedora that much lately. I decided to give 14 a try and I wanted to duel boot with LXDE in case Debian SID crashes or there are other issues. Brief run down. I have both Debian and Fedora on seperate hard drives, both Encrypted LVM. Each hard drive has, of course, a boot partition that is not encrypted.
Now my issues are this. Fedora does not want to see Debian, Debian does not want to see Fedora (Lover quarrel I think.) Anyways I decided to just install G.A.G boot loader to the MBR and have grub installed on the boot partition for both Debian and Fedora. This worked great for Debian. However I can't seem to get the same grub commands to work with Fedora. As root I can't update-grub at all and when I try to grub-install to Fedora's boot partition it tells me that partition is not in the BIOS.
Now Truecrypt installed fine. But it will not run at all. Not when I click it in the accessories menu or if I try to run it for the command line. This is the first distro I ever had issues with concerning Truecrypt.
GRUB2, multiple ubuntu images on extended partition. When update manager runs, the grub menu changes. i.e. Example of Boot menu

Notice that /sda7 and /sda11 seemed to switch in the menu. What is happening with respects to GRUB2 ... is this 'chaining?'
I have a dual-boot grub2. On the list, there are Ubuntu 10.04, Memtest x86, and Windows7. I was wondering if it is possible to make Windows 7 first in the grub boot list. At the moment Ubuntu is first, so if it's possible to make windows 7 first.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI used Truecrypt in Windows and it worked pretty well. I tried to install the program on Ubuntu but got some problem. Here is what I did and the problems I got:
1. I downloaded the standard 32-bit tag.gz file from [URL]
2. Extract the file onto desktop
3. Installed by double clicking and run in terminal or directly run in terminal (I assume they are equal)
4. Follow the instructions till 'Press Enter to exit'.
For me it seems that the program is installed successfully, and the icon shows up in the Application- Accessories menu. However, it doesn't respond at all when I click the icon. For most of the software I used in Windows, I have already found equivalents that are working fine. And I really don't want to go back to Windows because this program.
How can I update Truecrypt from version 6.3a to version 7.0a ? I tried updating via "Update manager", but the update wasn't shown.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed truecrypt on a Fedora 14 system. I have finally got truecrypt to mount a volume(only thru a terminal window). but when I try to look at the files in the volume, I get the following message:
Nautilus 3364: Eggsmclient Warning : Failed to connect to session manager. None of the Authentication Protocols specified are supported. Glib-GIO error: gdbus connection c2270: initable_init assertion failed. (Connection >initialization error==null) I made sure that Nautilus was alive and working.
Right now I only have Windows 7 64bit installed. I'd like to keep it installed and have a hidden Truecrypt system partition that holds Ubuntu. I've installed Ubuntu once before, but it was a while ago so I don't remember the details. Also, I'm not entirely sure how to work Truecrypt as I've never used it before. Do I install Ubuntu first and then run Truecrypt, if so, how do I deal with the fact that installing Ubuntu involves many partitions. Does Truecrypt recognize this automatically or do I have to somehow encrypt them all?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want Truecrypt to ask for password for Windows XP as usual but with the standard [ESC] option, on selecting that, i.e via Escape key, I want it to find the grub for the (unencrypted) Ubuntu install. I've installed Windows XP on the 120Gb hard drive of a Toshiba NB100 netbook then partitioned to make room for Ubuntu 10.04 and installed that after the Windows XP install. When I encrypt Windows XP, Truecrypt will overwrite the grub entry in the master boot record (MBR), I believe (?) and I won't be able to choose between XP and Ubuntu anymore. So I need to restore it back.
My setup:
Partitions:
Windows XP, NTFS (to be encrypted with Truecrypt), 40Gb
/boot (Ext4, 1Gb)
Ubuntu swap, 4Gb

The key area of the problem is how to instruct Truecrypt when escape key is pressed, and how the Grub/Ubuntu can be made visible to the truecrypt bootloader to find it, when the esc key is pressed. Also knowing as chaining.
I've been trying to get a dual-boot system with a truecrypted Windows partition and grub 2 in combination to work successfully and to date, I haven't had much luck. I'm using the grub 2 version from Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS.I understand from searching through Google that there is presently no easy way to chainload the Truecrypt boot loader from Grub 2 in a similiar way that was done with Grub 1. This is because the Grub 2 payload is much larger and actually overwrites some of the Truecrypt boot loader, preventing it from starting.Does anybody know what might be going wrong here? I've been looking for ages now and can't seem to find any solution to this problem apart from restoring the Truecrypt loader to the hard disk and trying to chainload Grub 2 from Truecrypt. I'd rather use Grub 2 as the main loader though as Ubuntu Linux will be the main operating system in use.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble getting my laptop set up the way I want it. I want to install Fedora 13, using Ext4 encryption, and I also want to install Windows 7 encrypted using TrueCrypt.
On boot, I would like to have Fedora 13s GRUB, offering me the two OS choices. If I select Fedora, then Ill get the cool graphical decryption screen, and if I select Windows 7 Ill get the TrueCrypt boot loader prompting me for the decryption key for the Windows 7 partition. Can anyone give me instructions on how to get this set up?
I like the buttons on the left. I'm running 10.04 & I know how to move them. The problem is that changing themes will move them back right. OK, if the new theme has them on the right that's OK. But going back to the other theme doesn't change them back. They don't seem to be controlled by the theme, or I'm just not doing it right.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded truecrypt Linux version, giving me a file named truecrypt-6.3a-ubuntu-x86.tar.gz. I assume that's the archive. Double clicking on that produced file truecrypt-6.3a-setup-ubuntu-x86. I assume that's the executable. When I try to run that, I get a "could not display ... unknown filetype" error. Could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I plan to run truecrypt under the easycrypt GUI.

I'm currently looking at putting Fedora onto a flash memory card to test it works OK on the hardware, before installing it to the hard disk. The problem I've got is that the boot sector is occupied by WDE software (TrueCrypt). Will this pose a problem for dual-booting XP with Fedora, or will GRUB move the boot loader in the usual way?

Being a linux user I couldn't let a perfectly good albeit slow Windows XP computer go to waste. With Ubuntu 10.04 install it is lightning fast. I've noticed it is faster than the current computer I use as a server, and want to migrate the HDD over to the new machine. I know there are issues when doing so with Windows as it registers the hardware and has major heartburn with this, so I was wondering if Ubuntu or linux in general will have any problems. I simply want to move it over.
I don't have a problem with reformatting as it has it's own /home partition, but for obvious reasons I would like to minimize down time. I did a search on google and on the forums here and I didn't find what I want to do.
I work with ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on a hp pavilion 2713ca laptop. Everything is fine presently, except for the fact that I will be soon out of space on the actual sda6 partition (only 2 gig left).
I would like to move the ubuntu partition with all its content to a second one where there is a lot of space, that is sda2. So my question would be twofold.
1) What software can I use to do that (gparted, clonezilla, ... ) and is someone is familiar with the procedure?
2) Will there be an easy way to change the grub.cfg file? (for example, will the command grub update be enough to boot to new setup)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a IBM T42 (using it now to write this) and a newer Lenovo T500 (with a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 on it). I want to take all of my programs and config of those programs, plus all my /home directory information/files/hidden files all over onto the new machine. There may be other stuff I need to take over to, and don't know enough about to comment here.
But basically I want my new system to look and work like my old system, with all the same programs and user data, all configured in the same way. Is there a way to do this over the network or another way? I can't even get the two systems to see each other over the network, even though Folder Sharing is enabled and (I think) all the right components are installed. I even checked to see if my user had permission to share files on both machines, and I do.
Currently I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an older P4 system with EIDE harddrives. My primary HD has a WinXP installation and GRUB. Ubuntu is installed on the secondary HD.
I am happy enough running Ubuntu that I would like to remove my WinXP disk, move the disk with Ubuntu on it to be the primary boot drive, and then install a new drive as the secondary.
However when I tried to simply move the drive with Ubuntu on it from the secondary to the primary EIDE position the system would not boot. I assume that this is because there is no boot loader currently on that drive.
how do I put GRUB on the Ubuntu drive so that it can become the boot drive? Or is there some other way to accomplish what I am after without having to reinstall Ubuntu?
I've been setting up a media server on a an actual server machine I picked up dirt cheap, and had it running xUbuntu fine. gave it a 5gig root directory, 5gig swap partiton, and three 34gig storage drives. Everything was running smoothly.
Just recently I learned that the 5gig's dedicated to running my operating system of choice, aren't enough to install all the software I wanted(I might be just a little greedy). The first logical step to correcting this problem was to move /etc to one of the storage drives and create a link were it was, but not being entirely sure how xUbuntu would take that, I thought I'd get an expert opinion.
The thread prefix is "all variants" because I have installed the desktops for kUbuntu and just plain Ubuntu on this machine(what I meant by being a little greedy).
I have run Ubuntu in the past and then switched to OpenSUSE several months ago and set up raid 0 on a 500gb hard drive and 700gb hard drive (I went with openSUSE because of the graphical raid setup.)
My whole partition setup looks like this:
500gb Hard Drive:
750gb Hard Drive:
md0 is the two 400gb partitions on each drive for a total of 800gb space on my /home partition ext4 filesystem ( 380gb space used ) md1 is 100gb ext4 / partition.
all raid 0
Now I was wondering if I downloaded the alternate install cd for ubuntu ( as OpenSUSE has crashed for the second time because of bad updates ( starts, but gets to terminal only ) ) would I be able to keep my raid 0 home partition and wipe the rest of the each drive and setting up Ubuntu keeping all of my files and settings intact, just to install my programs I need all while keeping my old settings ( such as firefox bookmarks, virtual box utilities etc. ) intact.
From what I know it's possible, but I don't know much about the Ubuntu Alternate install disk ( as I have been dealing with dependancy hell on OpenSUSE ) but in OpenSUSE it wont let me keep the old raid setup ( md0 ) Im guessing it is possible to set up the home directory on a different hard drive and then going back into the live cd, editing the fstab, and switching it to md0, if this is even possible, or would I need to configure the driver on that system before I did that Oh and I forgot to mention that I've only been running 64bit operating systems.
System Specs: AMD Dual core at 2.8ghz ( overclocked, stable, cpu ran at full bore for a day. only reaching 120f) Nvidia 9600 gso 368mb ram, 4gb ram at 800mhz
Would this be a simple case of just installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.04 on my HDD, then copying everything from the USB over? I, of course, would need to update grub to load from the HDD instead of the USB. Would there be any other way to accomplish this?
