Mar 5, 2011I was unaware of the difficulties of installing and booting Ubuntu from the "onboard raid" that the NVIDIA nForce chipsets provide. However, I've managed to get it working reliably with one single caveat:
When update-grub builds the grub.cfg, it refers to all of my partitions as follows:

So I'm guessing that the whole nvidia_blah,msdos5 is because of that. However, it doesn't seem to explain why Grub would THINK that would work and it in fact does not work. That's the biggest source of confusion on my part.
My questions are as follows: First off, because as an IT person I want to know: Why does this sort of change work? What does changing that device name change in GRUB's behavior? Is there a setting in /etc/default/grub that would change the way it's naming these RAID devices? Is there a value for this setting that would give me the device names that work, as explained above?
If there is no setting change I can make in /etc/default/grub, could I add a sed command on to the end of update-grub or can I make a modification to one of the scripts in /etc/grub.d? What sort of change would be recommended? How would I preserve this change through later package upgrades that would possibly rewrite these files?

Jul 31, 2011is it ever possible to do dual booting with grub(legacy) ever at all!. it is possible provided i take some pain, here is the link of that post [URL] i was coward and weak i didn't try that out then. but i did try it out. now so if u haven't seen the post .... I've installed Fedora 15 desktop(Gnome) with physical Logical volume called vg_fedora lv_root(ext4) ,lv_swap and lv_home(ext4), with 500MB /boot partition and had about 200GB free hard disk space ... so i wanted to install Scientific Linux 6.1 (because our school uses RHEL 6.1)
so, while running the installer I made (added) a logical volume lv_Scientific with ext4 FS and made its mount point (/) and used the MBR /boot which overwrote the Fedora /boot (completely OK and was as expected) i restarted after installation i got SL log in and as per the directions of the thread i copied the boot stanza from grub.conf of fedora 15 (which i already had copied and pasted into a text file and copied it from there)and pasted it into grub.conf of SL you may ask why did i choose same physical LVM too save swap space ... if i had made another physical LVM i had to make another swap ( i like LVM ... its cool)
completely unexpected happened Fedora now boots but not SL when grub starts i get this error 27 unrecognised commad and when i press <enter> i get grub menu with SL and fedora when i press on Fedora it works well i get my fedora login and i did login .. everything works fine but when i press SL it goes to the previous black screen grub error 27

Fedora :: Get EPS Image Support For A Gnome Browser?
Jul 22, 2009I am trying to figure out how to get EPS image support for a Gnome image browser, in particular Eye of Gnome (EOG) -- the default image viewer in Gnome. In Nautilus, thumbnails appear fine for EPS images, but when opening them in Eye of Gnome or gThumb, neither program can open the images. EOG says "unsupported file format", and gThumb shows a blank screen. Apparently both programs can get additional image support, but I can't seem to get it to work.
I have ghostscript updated to the latest version, and I'm using Fedora 10.
Anybody know how to do this?

Nov 12, 2010I am a ubuntu user and I tried to install ubuntu on my sister's netbook too. The problem is that the netbook has a broadcom wi-fi n that is not supported by linux for now because I searched for drivers and other stuff an I found that it is not supported. After that I tried to format the disk and reinstall windows 7 but the problem is that the installation procedure gives me this error: "windows cannot be installed on this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enable in the computer's bios menu."
I tried to do all the things that are described here: [URL] but it's still not working.
Obviously when I format the drive with ubuntu and I put it in the netbook it's not working, it stops at the logo and the only thing I can do is entering BIOS.
I formated the drive with a windows os and then the pc makes the boot from usb but the problem persit...I still can't install because of that error :"windows cannot be installed on this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enable in the computer's bios menu."
Before installing ubuntu the sistem had kaspersky antivirus and detected 1 Trojan, it could be that a virus destroyed the bootsect...I don't think so.

General :: Mkisofs Command - Booting From ISO Image
Jan 28, 2010I have created an iso image from a RHEL5.4 disc using mkisofs.
mkisofs -A "Red Hat Linux 5.4" -V "Red Hat Linux 5.4" -v -U -J -R -T
-b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot
-boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -o /tmp/RHEL54-x86_64-dvd.iso .
It creates the iso image no problem, however when I go to boot a new server from the disc I get the boot prompt, hit enter, answer the language and keyboard questions and then it throws the following error:
"The Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server CD and press OK to retry".
Perhaps I need to specify in my mkisofs command that its supposed to be iso9660? This is on a RHEV virtual machine.
General :: Boot An SD Card On A Notebook That Does Not Have BIOS Support For Booting From The SD Slot?
Feb 9, 2011I'm trying to boot an SD card on a notebook that does not have BIOS support for booting from the SD slot. Using various how-to's I've figured out how to add additional SD card modules to the initrd.img file on a bootable USB drive such that I can boot Linux installed on the SD card.
However, best I can tell, it loads the kernel and initrd.img from the USB and everything else from the SD card. What I really want is to load the necessary SD modules from the USB and then chainload the SD card such that whatever kernel is on the SD card is loaded instead. Is it possible to chainload to another bootable device after the kernel (with the SD module additions) has already been loaded?

Aug 19, 2011I need to show a static image with the logo of our department while Debian boots. Is there any easy way or tool to do this? (Any parameter of the kernel maybe?) It doesn't have to be anything fancy (like a progress bar)... just a plain an simple image.
I've seen many bootsplash projects..but most of them are broken. I tried splashy (which is available on the repo), but by the time it loads, my system is already booted, so I don't really like it. note that I don't have any Xorg server installed.

Jul 17, 2010Using Slackware 13.0. Have a Microdia web cam (60fc) and was (still am) looking for a simple free application to test it. Found a site which identified the drivers, modules, etc. needed so was checking my messages file and noticed that the Image Sensor HV7131R is not always identified as being detected when booting: kernel: usb 1-1.3: HV7131R image sensor detected Is this a problem or what?
I found modules videodev, V4L2, but could not find compat_ioctl32 and it is not listed in the modules loaded. Is this correct? Could not "find" it. I see usbcore listed during booting but does this mean it is a module? or a driver? or what? Also cannot find the an appropriate module that is for either ehci_hcd or uhci_hcd related as both of these appear in the messages. Also I see that the camera is for SN9C105 bridge and know that the "sn9c105" is supposed to be included in "sn9c102" module(?) but the SN9C105 camera notation does not always appear in messages. Is this correct? or (I think) I am confused by the numbering and cases used, i.e. what is a module (loadable?) a bridge and why change cases? Can someone straighten me out? Are all modules loaded listed by lsmod or just the loadable ones and usbcore etc. are "modules" loaded at another time?

Jul 28, 2011I currently have kubuntu 11.04 on my laptop harddrive that is in an external enclosure. it is on the outside of the machine and connect to the computer via USB.It works fine on my windows machine and I love the fact I could also plug it into my kubuntu machine at home and use it as a regular harddrive too. Although my new job basically wants me to use a mac. Apparently you need something called an efi support on my grub so here are the questions:
Does kubuntu 11.04 have efi support on its grub i.e. can I plug my hard drive with my kubuntu on via USB to a mac and boot from there? If not how could I get one? Also does getting efi support make any difference when I plug it into my kubuntu machine at home? So can I back up my data as I used to?(by simply plugging it in)Could I still plug it into my windows machine as before and work if I get efi support?
p.s. If you have trouble with heavy laptops give external harddrives a go its like carrying an ultra light linux machine (with all your data in it)!

The system is not showing correct resolution in the grub menu and the splash screen is black, until I reach the logon screen.Screen resolution, and video rendering after booting is picture-perfect.I presume this is a bug of the sort "VBE does not support 1920x1080 wide screen resolution".Or, maybe I am missing some point.I hope there must be some workaround.

Jan 28, 2011I have a relatively new laptop that is too dumb to recognize a usb flash drive in the bios. So I cannot boot from it by the bios. I have a Debian install on that laptop with grub 2. So I figure, grub 2 should be powerful enough to have it's own drivers for usb storage so it can directly access the usb drive without having to get help from the bios. How is this done?
How can I integrate usb support into grub 2? Is there a module I can load? I have an ubuntu on the memorystick, so it has it's own grub bootloader, so I would probably do a chainboot if I am not mistaken. Or does anybody know of a initrd that will give control to another bootloader on a device? Initrd should surely have all support for hardware.
General :: Grub 97 And Add Ext4 Support?
Jan 6, 2010I have slackware 13 ext4 partition. Debian lenny ext3 partition. and a /data ext3 partition Debian contains the grub boot loader i've been using to boot slackware. I'm going to wipe debian and I installed grub to /data with knoppix cd. Grub on debian booted into slackware just fine, but the grub I installed (onto data partition) with knoppix live cd does not find the slackware kernel. I am using the exact same menu.lst. apparently debian grub had ext4 support, but knoppix does not. both are grub .97. Is there a way to add ext4 support?

Ubuntu :: Booting Windows Iso - GRUB?
May 23, 2011Not sure if this is the exact right spot for this post, I've got an .ISO file of windows 7, but no DVD's to burn it to. I've read that I should be able to use GRUB to boot, but I can't exactly get it to work. I've been poking around the map function trying to sort of mount the iso somewhere within the hard drive, but I'm not sure if that's how it should be done.
