Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Monitor Different Background?
Dec 30, 2010
So I have to monitors. One is a 23" (1920x1080) and a 15.6" (1366x76 and I want to backgrounds... I'm not sure if it's possible but I'm hoping it is... I just got Ubuntu earlier this week so I don't know much about it yet.
With Windows I used DisplayFusion but it doesn't look like it's compatible to anything other than Windows..
I recently upgraded to fedora 12. Before the upgrade I had a desktop background which filled the entire 2 screens. After the upgrade i noticed that the background is displayed on each monitor twice so when displaying the desktop I see the background twice.I tried to change the settings for it like 'center' and 'fill screen' but to no avail. The rest of the dual monitor setup works fine.
I have a Intel DQ35JOE motherboard with integrated video (DVI and VGA). I've been running Ubuntu 8.10 for at least a year with both monitors working fine. One is a Hanns-G 27.5 inch, the other (VGA) is an older AOC 19". They were both plugged into the motherboard video plugs (it had both), and they worked side-by-side (not mirrored) just fine on 8.10.Last night I decided to go ahead and take the plunge and upgrade to the latest, because I run 9.10 on my laptop and love a lot of the new stuff. The reason I hadn't upgraded was because I feared the potential problems - which I ran into head-on this time.
Upgrade to 9.04 seemed to go fine. Then I immediately did the upgrade to 9.10. Unfortunately, my screens came up upside down and backwards. And the mouse moved the wrong way. And to click on something in the top left of the screen, I had to have my mouse on the bottom right of the screen.Well, I also received a warning that my primary hard disk was failing. So, I decided to just do a clean install of 9.10 on a new disk that I had handy - hoping it would be better if it was a clean install rather than an upgrade.
Now I can't get dual monitor to work at all, and Ubuntu seems to not recognize my monitors. If I just plug one monitor in, it works. But it won't let me adjust resolution above 1280x1024 (my big one is 1920x1200). And it says "unknown" instead of identifying the monitor. Also - at one point both monitors were appearing (but "unknown"), but mirrored, and whenever I uncheck "mirror screens" and click apply, the screen just goes black with a frozen cursor - and I can't even do CTRL-ALT-F6 to get to a terminal - it just freezes the whole computer.
I have a dual monitor setup in Ubuntu, with my main monitor on the right and the monitor I want to extend to on the left monitor, but I can't seem to get it to do this, it always has the 'desktop' on the left monitor and then extends onto what I want to be my main monitor. I have an ATI Radeon 4350 Graphics card.
Is there any way to put a dual monitor wallpaper on a single monitor configuration using desktop wall? Using only 1/3 or so per wall. Something that will have the effect like the scrolling wallpaper feature on Android/iPhone.
This is a repost of my initial problem, I need some one who knows what they are doing more than I too take a look at this command output and give some sort of direction/clue/etc on what I'm doing wrong or missing.
Is my xorg.conf missing some vital line(s) or setting?
My best guess is that i'm missing something to tell the Xserver to use both screens, as the Xorg.0.log does not talk about trying to bring up the intel display; but this is just a hunch.
I'm running kubuntu 9.04 with 2 monitors: on-board intel video and a PCI nvidia display: I am using my nvidia display fine, but still can not get my 2nd display (the intel) working. What the heck am I missing?
just setup suse 11.3 , put on the Nvidia 19.29-22.1 drivers via yast , no kms is set in inetd , nomodeset on grub boot line etc... Even tried installing the driver " the hard way " dual monitors come up, setup xinerama to "Extend" my desktop , and the main monitor ( right side ) is good, visually the left monitor (2ndary) is good.. but whenever I move my mouse over to the left screen the mouse pointer dissapears, flickers along the right hand border of that screen... and if i move the cursor back to the original screen i have to really fight to get it back to the main screen....Copy of my xorg.conf , still very basic...

I just upgrade to F14 from F10 on a dual montor setup. Firefox behaives differently on F14 than on F10. On F10 it followed the mouse pointer's location and show up on the correct monitor
When maximized at close, it is always displayed on the left monitor. When not maximized at close it will open on the monitor where the mouse pointer is located.
About minimize/maximize Firefoxe before closing and it seems to work in some case, but not for me.
I found this thread by looking up ultramon replacement: [URL] I would like to use "swapmonitor", to make it easy to move windows from monitor to monitor in a dual desktop environment. I have no idea how to install it.
I am attempting to use dual monitors in Fedora 14 using an AMD ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series graphics card (not that I think that has anything to do with anything, but who knows), and want it to where my second monitor is its own virtual workspace so that I can switch between my other workspaces on my original monitor without switching the workspace on the second monitor. This way, I can watch movies or what-not on my TV (2nd monitor) while working on my original monitor. The only thing I found that was even close was setting the 2nd monitor up on it's on x server, which I don't want to do. Also, as it is now, I have my panel on my original monitor, but the windows do not see it when I have it aligned on the right (the windows don't adjust their size to account for the fact that it is there). I know a way I can do a work-around for this, but I would like to know if there is a "correct" way to do this. I know I can tell the movie player to show on all workspaces and have it on the 2nd monitor.
1. Is there a way to change the broken glass/monitor background on the login screen???
2. I have tried to login as root, but it will not accept the password, but if I login with my user name and need to change things that require root privileges the password works fine.
I worked a little back in 05 and 06 with FC4 and FC5 but nothing until now..
I upgraded to jessie today and I am having problems with my background. When I log in, the background tries to start on the external monitor but then it fails to load. I can change the background in settings but it does not show up. The background just becomes black and I am not sure why.
-Upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 -I did not have a working SLI config in 9.10 -No matter what fix I tried, only one monitor -Was running "190.53" 64-bit drivers -I had spoofed the xorg.conf file to get both working, but only with both plugged into one board, and no SLI option enabled -Functioning 3360x1050 workspace with the ability to move open apps across monitors, but unable to switch between multiple workspaces
I just got my new video card: nvidia 9500 GT to setup dual monitors.
The video card has 2 dvi output to support dual monitors Monitor 1 is connect to dvi Monitor 2 is connect to dvi using a vga adaptor
I can't seem to get dual monitor to work?
From system settings -> monitor, i see 2 vid outputs one is DVI0, the other is VGA2. what's odd is i can set up different screen resolution for each monitor, but I only see one desktop, both monitors show the same desktop.
How do i get each monitor to show it's own desktop?
I think I have caused a big problem with my laptop running Ubuntu 9.04, and I now can't get it to load up properly at all. It was when I was trying to change the screen resolution of my external monitor.
I'll try to recall exactly what I did...
I connected the external monitor and then turned the laptop on. The laptop worked fine, and the external monitor worked fine. The only problem was that the resolution on the external monitor was poor (it was the same resolution as on the laptop screen).
I went to system>preferences>Display
I removed the tick from mirror screens
Then I selected the external monitor and changed its resolution to the maximum setting. At this point a message popped up, but now I can't remember exactly what it said - I just clicked OK.
Both screens went all black, and I couldn't undo whatever I'd done.
I've now tried switching the computer off again and on again. If the external monitor is NOT connected when I switch the computer on then the laptop doesn't load up - I get the little Ubuntu symbol to start with, but then the screen just goes black.
If the external monitor IS connected then it takes me to the screen where I get to choose which OS to boot. If I boot normally then I see the ubuntu symbol and then it goes black. If I choose recovery mode then it does some recovery and then it takes me to a command line. So I can see all of my files.
Sometimes it does something different when I switch it on and an error message appears on the laptop screen. But the screen is so fuzzy that I can't see what it says. I click on OK (I guess it says OK...) and it takes me to another error message - but I can't seem to get any further.
So that's the problem. If anyone can help me I will be very grateful. I'm actually not that intested in getting the external monitor to work - it's much more important that I undo whatever change I've made so that the laptop works properly again.
I think the important thing is that I can get to the command line, so I should be able to make any necessary change there.
it is sometimes triggered when i activate dual monitor (i'm using nvidia-settings). Actually the entire computer seemingly changes its theme, but after simply running System > Appearance, all goes back to normal except for nautilus (that includes icons in the desktop). please see attached image.Logging out then logging back in solves the problem, but i don't want to log out just to correct the problem. Is there anything i need to restart to bring it back to normal?i've tried "compiz --replace" and "compiz --restart" and even "metacity --replace" but it doesn't do anything.by the way, i'm using ubuntu 9.10 64bits, using the default theme, nvidia driver (the default which comes with ubuntu 9.10),using compiz.
I'm using two monitors, they're virtually placed next to each other so the virtual screen resolution is (1024+1280) x 800px. Now my mouse speed on the x-axis is automatically set higher, which is good if you permanently switch between both monitors all the time. But I don't need it, so how do I turn it off? It's kinda annoying if you're used to your "normal" mouse speed.Y-axis speed is still fine. also, is there a way do display the gnome-do dock on the right handed monitor? it places itself always on the left monitor....I'm using Mint 8 which is Ubuntu 9.10 with gnome 2.28.1
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop (intel Mobile 915 video card), with an external 19" HP monitor.
I "preferences/screen" I set the HP monitor to be on the left side. When I restart my computer, this setting is kept ok and the HP monitor works as intended (on the left side). But when I suspend the laptop and resume back, the HP monitor is moved to the right side and have to repeat the process os moving it in the preferences menu. What am I doing wrong/how can I fix it?
Basicaly I want to know what version fo Ubuntu do I use,Intel Q6600 with a nvidia chipset my dam dual monitor isnt working but thats another problem for me to sort out
when i run an application full screen in wine then it spans both of my monitors, whereas i just want it on 1 monitor. I thought an easy solution to this would be to simply run the program in windowed mode instead of full screen. However, when in windowed mode the mouse cursor leaves the window, which isn't advantageous to gaming.
how to keep the mouse cursor in the wine window? Or does anyone know how to make full screen only use one monitor?
I've got two monitors setup and it seems the only way to get separate gamma and brightness settings working on separate screens is through separate X sessions.
The problem though is after setting up and configuring Compiz the second monitor only displays the wallpaper and lets me move my mouse onto it i don't get any gnome panels nor do i get a menu if i right click on the desktop which suggests that gnome doesn't load on the other monitor at all or is out of bounds of the resolution.
It seemed to go like this during the configuring of Compiz as the right monitor windows and such seemed to crash then since then its just been the symptoms I described.
I'm including my Xorg.conf incase its of any use.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with dual monitors enabled. Technically speaking, everything works just fine. There is one very annoying aesthetic issue, though. There is a label in the top left corner of each display that identifies the monitor (Dell 18", for example). The label does not disappear and is always on top. I had to move my panel to the bottom of the screen just to avoid the label. How can I remove/hide this label?
I noticed in the new Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity, when in dual monitor the icon of skype is not placed in the tray when "closed". It is only placed in the background, so that I have to kill the process and open a new one. To be sincere, I see a strange aspect of the entire tray when in dual monitor. Is anyone else noticing the same?
I have tried to setup a workstation with 3 monitors on two ati videocards, the goal being to span the desktop across all of them.
The process was not difficult at all, but after login X11 crashes and I am left with a console. I am fortunately able to login in safe mode, but I would like to ask for help in debugging this issue.
Here I will try to give as much detail as possible, starting with my system specifications:
Code:
The first card, the ATI Radeon HD 4650 is capable of running two monitors at the same time. The monitors, for all it matters, are three identical ACER P206HV 20" connected with their analog interface (due to missing cables which I will buy soon). Resolution 1600x900 each. My motherboard is an AsRock 870 Extreme3 mounting an AMD Athlon II X4 640 3 GHz processor and 8 GB of RAM.
When asked by Ubuntu, I installed the ATI Caralyst driver version 11.6 and set it up for using Xinerama.
As I said, this setup works fine if I login in safe mode, but crashes X11 otherwise (even in classical mode - no Unity). By inspecting the logs (attached) I found this (notice the segfault)
Code:
As a test, I tryed to configure Catalyst without Xinerama, an this works, but of course I end up with two separate desktop, which is not what I want. In this mode, xrandr seems to work correctly
Code:
After some research I found that XRandR does not support desktop spanning over multiple GPUs, so Xinerama is the only way to go in my case. Since the two are not compatible with each other, after login in safe mode I see that XRandR is disabled
Code:
One more test consisted in disabling the XRandR module in the config files, as found in some posts: edits in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
