i upgraded my ubuntu to 11.04 and i didnt like unity. and installed gnome3 from ppa. then i couldnt login. tried to remove gnome3 and everything messed up here. when i tried apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, it gave unmet dependencies error. i tried bunch of stuff,none solved the problem. for now i installed xfce, and using it.
View 4 RepliesSo, I had Win7 and Ubuntu 10.10 in dualboot and after upgrading to 11.04 I managed to screw up GRUB, it didnt boot into Win7 anymore. After that I got rid of both ubuntu and swap partitions and merged them to Win7 partition via Gparted and made a clean installation of 10.10 again next to existing Win7 hoping to fix GRUB and be able to boot into Win7, but now when I try to boot into Win7, I only see '_' blinking on top left and nothing happens, Ubuntu works fine.

Today, after a few hours of using and a few reboots, when I provide my password in GDM, the screen turns black and gets me back to the GDM. The same with recovery mode.When I turn onto the terminal I can't see any letters but a bunch of blurred lines on the top of the screen. In recovery mode the terminal works properly.GDM also works properly. Neither graphics, nor the resolution has changed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just did a distribution upgrade on my laptop from 9.1 to 10.04, and it went fine for the most part except this issue. After it boots up, I don't see any window titles/scrollbars/borders and on clicking the icon for "Show desktop" on the bottom left, I see the following error message:
"Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager."
After googling a bit, I realized that gnome-wm is not starting automatically and so I have to manually start each time to see the windows working properly. Can somebody tell me if there is a way to make sure that gnome-wm starts automatically? I know I can put it in my .bashrc but I want to do it the correct way if possible. If not, I will have to go with that workaround.

Its like some sort of system service is not starting, I'm sure there are other symptoms that I have forgotten. All of these problems are livable, but inconvenient. I should have known better than to mess with my system, but I wish I knew how to reverse it. Naturally I uninstalled gnome-shell but it did nothing.

After the installation completed I tried to logout (from Gnome 3 shell) but couldn't. A notification appeared saying "cannot find gnome save session" or something similar. Then pressed ctrl+alt+F2 then used the reboot command as root. After booting the new looking login screen appeared but after typing my password when I tried to login it said "something has gone wrong" and the only option which I see there is logout.
Yesterday I upgraded to CentOS 5.4 on x86_64. Now I can not login to GNOME or KDE. How do I go about diagnosing this? I am completely out of my depth.
View 12 Replies View RelatedFirst off I'm loving my ubuntu experience on my other devices. My netbook and other laptops run wonderfully. I'm trying to get my HP dv6700 up and running but I'm having trouble right out of the gate. When I boot up on the CD the screen becomes "messed up". I can actually still see what is there, I just see basically three copies of everything, almost like it is out of sync. I assume this is a graphics card driver issue but how can I resolve this when it does it upon the installation screen? I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04.1.

I have read up on data recovery stuff and there are tons of tool... but I need to know what happened, then I can worry about the fixing. Ok, Standard P4 PC with two HDDs.
1 X 120GB for / & /Home
1 X 350GB for /Data
During the install I told the setup my second HDD is /Home (who knows why?? -stupid I know) and that its EXT4. (no format) Now I have a lovely clean HDD with /home. What happened here now??... There were no partition changes made, I did not format the drive.
The last update of a few days ago messed up the update manager. here is the error that I get. I do not have the time to hunt for bug reports to report this and don't know how anyway. maybe someone else can do it.

I was recently watching an avi file, when suddenly, my tower (the computer) got really, really noisy. That's pretty normal when I'm on my Windows side, but very unusual for Ubuntu Linux. I knew something was in the wind then and there. So I exit my Dragon Player to discover that ! gasp ! KDE is down, replaced with the default wallpaper for GNOME, and no bars anywhere. I reset the system only to find that it refuses to boot into either KDE or GNOME. Having been in something similar to this situation before, I decide that Xorg.conf must be broken somehow. In an effort to get to the GUI where I can safely edit it, I try reinstalling KDE and GNOME, which both failed.
So I try installing xdm...which results in only being able to access the login screen for XFCE. Whenever I try to log in using the correct credentials, it simply refreshes the log-in screen.
1. Is this, indeed, the sign of a broken Xorg.conf, or a broken Xserver in general? Or is there something larger that was changed?
2. How do I fix this? (I've already tried using Ubuntu 10.10 64 in rescue mode, but I can't seem to change anything in the system itself.)
3. Is this possibly a result of upgrading straight from 10.04? Is it possible that having both KDE and GNOME contributed to this?
I've just finished an upgrade from debian lenny to squeeze.But when I tried to log into my Gnome session the menu and the taskbar was missing and when i click on change desktop preferences nothing happen and i m not able to run anny command as well (alt+f2). The upgrading process went good i think and i dont know what i did wrong

I have done the dual boot ( XP installed first) then restored the backup file. Now the problem is that I forgot if I excluded system files from backup or not, so when I restored and rebooted, my installations got messed up, many programs do not find their path to run, etc. But the real problem is when I rebooted again, I got error 15: file not found tried to follow some other posts here to solve this and noticed that running fdisk -l gives me:

I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and now it's messed up my Windows Vista partition. When I try to load Windows it boots to a strange login menu with low resolution. It then takes me to a screen with options like Repair/Fix, Recovery, Complete Recovery... I'll click Repair and and then it will say No errors found, Shut down, Restart.

I'm running F11 with an ATI HD3850 graphics card. I donloaded latest version of the ATI driver and installed it (without paying to much attention to versions and pre-reqs). This caused my display to be unusable in Gnome, nothing can be made out of it.
Was hoping to be able to repair this if I atleast had a bash prompt, but when I press ctrl-alt-F6 (or any F-button) my computer restarts. how I could fix this without reinstalling?
Fedora 12 seems to have made all my ntfs disks and partitions into LVM Linux (whatever that is) In all the time i've used other distros I've never seen this before .... I m getting them back to original state and accessable again, but have no idea what to do.....

I have used openSUSE for a long time, but was trying to install Kubuntu 10.10 in addition to opensuse 11.3 and Windows 7 on a Gateway desktop (1500 GB hard disk & an external drive with 1000 GB. From the CD with the isoimage I got the live version and then decided to press install. I chose to follow the suggested choice of partition: About half of the external drive (500 GB) was allocated to Kubuntu while the internal hard drive contained Windows 7 and opensuse.
Everything went well until I was asked to restart the computer. I got a black screen with the message:

I am now ***completely lost***. The only step that gets me out of this screen is ctrl-alt-del which causes a reboot and brings me back into the same situation. The ***computer is useless*** until this is resolved.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my laptop and got a new plug and play device that wasnt being read so I went to go and install windows onto my laptop and when I get to the screen to select my partition it says its unreadable or its not detected but when I restart it it works fine in loading ubuntu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was attempting dual boot my computer (ubuntu 11.04 and windows 7) and when I got to the stage to allocate drive space I accidentally formatted the largest partition of my hard drive to a linux swap. My computer froze while it was formatting the drive and I was forced to power off my laptop. Windows was my original operating system and was installed on the partition that is now formatted (or maybe not because of the crash during the formatting) as a linux swap. Therefore my windows no longer works and I cannot restore my computer for a backup because it wont let me restore it to the partition that is now a linux swap. Now when I boot from the linux install cd I get an error and am not able to install ubuntu or format/allocate drive space. Is there a way I can reformat and fix my harddrive so I can them restore windows.

I've upgraded the generic kernel of my Xubuntu Karmic AMD64 persistent USB installation with the ubuntustudio realtime kernel (2.6.31.9.10). The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.
