OpenSUSE Install :: Change All Repos Used In Yast When Upgrading To A New Release?
Mar 7, 2011As I have 15 repo's enabled in Yast it a bit tedious changing them in the package manager, is there an easier way to bulk change them? Something like doing a kfilereplace on the /etc/zypp/repos.d/ folder and changing all occurances of 11.3 to 11.4 (in all *repo, which are all the files in the folder). Will this work?

Feb 12, 2010Yast completely overwrites my very customized /boot/grub/menu.lst. I wrote a Perl script to restore the customizations from the previous version (retained in CVS) but this is more than a little annoying. At least Ubuntu asks. How do I stop this idiocy when upgrading the kernel.

Feb 24, 2010From a fresh install of OpenSuse 11.2 64 bit the default is KDE. But if you want to install both KDE and Gnome on the same machine. I got to Yast --> Patterns --> And tick Gnome Desktop Environment and Gnome Base System.
That inturn pops up with a dependency issue. That states the following:

So my question is what exactly does removing and applying the Gnome pattern do. Because it seems to change alot more than just branding. It changes the default environment to GTK. How would go about reverting the pattern back to KDE after the install of all the correct Gnome Dependencies.
OpenSUSE :: Yast Different Interfaces In KDE And In Gnome?
May 6, 2011I have opensuse 11.4 with gnome and kde, being kde the default wm. I have noticed that the interface of software management in yast in gnome is different from that in kde. There are several differences in interface and behavior but the most noticeable are the ones bellow. In gnome, in the bottom left corner appears a list of the number of all available, not installed, installed and upgradable applications. This is very practical because when I want to update applications all I need to do is to click on list of upgradable apps and all of them appear filtered on the right side allowing me to choose wich to upgrade. In kde no matter what view mode I choose that list never appears and this becomes very complicated since kpackagekit is very, very slow to build the list of apps to update. Furthermore, in gnome when I choose packages to install bellow the lists appears a link to view changes. Clicking there displays a list of all apps that are to be installed, the size of disk space that will be used and the size of files to download. On the other hand in kde all I can do is to click accept and everything starts to be installed without advice. Since I have a slow internet connection it takes much time to wait to kpackagekit to load the list of softwares. And I need to know the size of a download before engaging in it, because it may delay very much depending on its size. Currently I use kde as default and do everything in it almost all the time, but when I have to do some install I stop every activity in kde logout and login in gnome to do it. Sometimes it's boring but I have lived with this. However I have tried to get used to kde for all my activities because in next versions probably gnome will come with many changes. Indeed, since I like traditional menu and panel config I don't think I'll be able to tolerate gnome shell and don't know for how long gnome 2 will exist and be supported. So is there a way to launch yast software management in kde but with gnome interface or at last with the functions of gnome interface?

After the installation completed I tried to logout (from Gnome 3 shell) but couldn't. A notification appeared saying "cannot find gnome save session" or something similar. Then pressed ctrl+alt+F2 then used the reboot command as root. After booting the new looking login screen appeared but after typing my password when I tried to login it said "something has gone wrong" and the only option which I see there is logout.
OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Find Disk After Upgrading To 11.3
Jul 25, 2010After upgrading openSUSE 11.1 to 11.3 boot fails with:
Could not find /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_SAMSUNG_xxxxxx.part_2 Want me to fail back to /dev/disk/by-id/........ (Y/n)
and then I am stuck in console-mode
when checking /dev directory there is no "/dev/disk" subdirectory, and no /dev/sdxx entries.
Booting with install-cd in rescue mode the entries are theree, and its posible to mount all disks.

Sep 10, 2010I tried out DockBarx on my previous Ubuntu computer and really liked it. I installed openSUSE not too long ago and I just decided it's about time to get it back! However, I'm having some trouble installing it. My initial attempt was to simply download the tarball of dockbarx from GNOME-Look, untar it and run setup.py. Unfortunately, it will not run for me..not as root, standard user, anything. I do have Python-Base installed, and my "cnf python" does return a successful response. My PATH has /python's location in it and everything.I then tried the .rpm but I need to install python-keybinder, pyxdg and dbus, but I cannot find any downloads or repo's with it. I could simply be missing it though. So, basically, I'm asking all of you who have successfully installed it on your openSUSE system to inform me on how you did it.

Mar 29, 2011I've tried downloading 11.4 64-bit about a dozen times, and it always failed to checksum comparison. I've tried downloading it directly using Mozilla. I've tried that from a mirror (several actually). I've tried using Download Them All to get it and is failed both the MD5 and SHA1. BTW, those fail the checksum as soon as the Download Them All window opens. I've tried bitTorrent. I've tried it on two different machines. I've tried it from linux through Mozilla and Download Them All just to be sure it's not my anti-virus or software firewall.
BTW, in the process of installing a new HD on my desktop, somehow my OpenSUSE linux install has gotten corrupted (or something), so I don't have access to a linux install. Any suggestions how I can get a good download? I'm hoping I can use it to repair my existing install, and to install openSUSE on my laptop.

I have one database for my web application. It's using MyISAM tables. In MySQL admin, I went to Backup and created a scheduled backup project called backup1. On the advanced tab, I selected "Lock All Tables" and checked the box for "Backup Selected Database Completely". On the Schedule Backup tab I have "Execute this Project Daily" selected and the time 1AM. The target directory is set along with the connection name. The connection it's using is the same MySQL user that my web application uses in order to utilize the database. It has full access to that database. Now when the backup file is created, it backs up no data at all.
Instead in creates files that are 580bytes in size. When I open the files they contain:

Anyway:
I have the ISO (that I had previously) on a USB courtesy of UNetBootIn. All appears well until, quite quickly, I receive an error after the loading process which goes something like:

Error: cannot find disk at [hash-code - looks like 0ace5f etc etc, is about 12 char's in length.]Something very similar (but not same error I think) happened when I tried to do the same with my OpenSolaris or Fedora install. I.e., gets as far as the very beginning of the loader and then: bork.
At least one of them said "will reboot in 120 secs". Saves me the trouble!
OpenSUSE :: Successfully Compiled Ndiswrapper In Both Ubuntu And Fedora, But It Wont Work On 11.4?
Apr 17, 2011I use a Netgear WNA3100 Network Adapter that needs a patched version of ndiswrapper to work. So far I successfully compiled ndiswrapper in both Ubuntu and Fedora, but it wont work on openSUSE 11.4. I installed all necessary software I need, at least I think so. I have installed the following before trying to build ndiswrapperCode:make gcc kernel-syms kernel-dev kernel-source ndiswrapper-kmp-desktop Also tried installing linux-headers-`uname -r` as I did in Fedora, but in openSUSE it was not necessary.Here is the errors I get.Google could not help me this time so hopefully someone at this forum can.

Apr 19, 2010Has anyone successfully installed openSUSE 11.2 on a Dell PowerEdge 1850 system?Undoubtedly, it wasn't wise to attempt to upgrade from 10.2 to 11.2 but I was forced into it by a security audit of DMZ systems.It didn't go as smoothly as the jump from 9.3 to 10.2.I've spent the better part of a week getting an openSUSE 11.2 system installed.I went back to reiserfs and managed to get through and apply all the updates to openSUSE 11.2 today.When I got to the final reboot, it failed when I attempted to log into the system.Basically, the keyboard and mouse became inoperable.The only way out of this situation is to mash the reset button.
Rebooting into safe-mode and adding level 3 to the safe mode boot options, I get to the point of starting sshd when the lock-up occurs.It looks like X11 is the culprit.Booting a forensics DVD, I find that there is an xorg.conf.installation but no xorg.conf file.The ATI Radeon VE chip set is used on the PowerEdge.From another openSUSE system that I haven't upgraded, I see that X11 was configured for VESA mode. This is, probably, the mode that is needed as console access is, normally, through a KVM.Can anyone provide a way to get past this problem with a workable keyboard and mouse?

Dec 8, 2010In my YaST Network Settings (11.3), I see an entry labelled "Unknown Network Device" how to remove the confusion? The Overview tab also correctly lists my three known network devices (listed below), as does the Hardware Information utility. This is the output of lspci, and as far as I can tell, is accurate and complete. So what has YaST seen that it can't identify?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Login To GNOME After Upgrading
May 4, 2010Yesterday I did a successful upgrade to 10.04. Today, after a few hours of using and a few reboots, when I provide my password in GDM, the screen turns black and gets me back to the GDM. The same with recovery mode.When I turn onto the terminal I can't see any letters but a bunch of blurred lines on the top of the screen. In recovery mode the terminal works properly.GDM also works properly. Neither graphics, nor the resolution has changed.
