Fedora :: Installation Of ATI Driver Messed Up X Display?

Oct 1, 2009

I'm running F11 with an ATI HD3850 graphics card. I donloaded latest version of the ATI driver and installed it (without paying to much attention to versions and pre-reqs). This caused my display to be unusable in Gnome, nothing can be made out of it.

Was hoping to be able to repair this if I atleast had a bash prompt, but when I press ctrl-alt-F6 (or any F-button) my computer restarts. how I could fix this without reinstalling?

Fedora :: Window Display Messed Up When Dragging Left

Jan 16, 2011

I have a bit of a problem w/ the windowing UI when I drag any window left, the display gets messed up (see attached screen shot). It doesn't matter what the program is, even happens in explorer. I've done some searching of the Internetz and this form and all I could find was this bug, that doesn't have any updates on it:

Does anyone know of a fix for this? I can make the lines go away by triggoring a repaint (by either dragging another window on top of this one or minimizing and maximizing the problem window, but it's still a bit annoying.I'm running Fedora 14 and have ran all of the updates it prompted me to run.

Fedora Installation :: No Display After ATI Driver Installation?

Feb 12, 2009

I'm new to Fedora and just installed F10 yesterday. Everything was perfect, no snags at all, until I used the software tool to install the ATI drivers. Now my computer boots but instead of going back to the GUI all I get is a gray screen. I've tried everything I know to get to the command line so I can go back to my old X11 settings but there's no response -just the gray screen.

I'd prefer not to have to reinstall if I could avoid it. Is there a know bug with either a Toshiba Satellite A210 series laptop or the ATI Radeon Mobility X1300 graphics card? Since I'm not able to get to the command line, I don't know of a way to diagnose what's failing.

OpenSUSE Install :: Messed Up NVidia Driver After Upgrade

Jul 26, 2010

I did an upgrade of Nvidia(Latest version v.196) and KDE-base4 to KDE 4.4.4(I think) in Yast2. Now when I reboot the X doesnt start. I claim it can't find any nvidia-module. I thing the upgrade of Nvidia v.196 failed, so I need to know how to reinstall Nvidia in console(CLI). It only boot up in cli. I thought it is so simple to just download the latest driver and install in CLI, but my NetworkManager doesnt start eighter so I don't have any network.

OpenSUSE 11.2 64bits
KDE 4.4.x
Nvidia NV140 Quadro 512MB

I guess my mistake was to upgrade both KDE and Nvidia in the same operation.

Fedora :: Does Default Display Driver Shipped With F12 Do This Out Of Box?

Jul 15, 2010

In WinXP, with the nvidia drivers, there's fan control.By default, out of the box, my NVIDIA 8800 GTX card's fan blows at full speed (noisy). So when I'm booting up and I'm in the BIOS.. it's at full speed and loud. Once Windows loads up (and the drivers kick in), the fan goes almost completely silent. It stays that way until I load up something 3D intensive.. basically it runs the fan as needed.Does the default display driver shipped with Fedora 12 do this out of the box? What about the nouveau driver? How can I see the nvidia fans' speed while using the default display driver?

Fedora :: Back To Nouveau Driver - Display On Projector?

Nov 12, 2010

Fedora 13, x86_64, up to date. Trying to get nVidia Quadro NVS 140M to display on a projector the same as it does on the laptop screen, which is 1680 x 1050. I failed to do so with the nVidia driver (latest version), so I want to go back to the nouveau driver and try with xrandr. I have always used the nouveau driver with Fedora without an issue, but in my former life in Ubuntu I sometimes switched back and forth between the "nv" driver and the nVidia driver.

Doing so was trivially easy - just edit xorg.conf replacing "nv" with "nvidia" or vice-versa, then restart X. However, after installing the nVidia driver via Yumex and using the nVidia config utility, I find that now I have an xorg.conf file that is loaded with stuff I don't understand, except that at the top it says it was created by nVidia, and there are two places where it says the driver is "nvidia." I have searched and all I can find is instructions for installing the nVidia driver.

Apparently that is meant to be a one-way ticket, because I can't find any instructions for how to return to the nouveau driver. Except stuff that is over a year old, and complaints from users whose systems failed to start X. What would happen if I just replace "nvidia" with "nouveau" in the xorg.conf file and restart X? I know if it won't start X I can boot to rescue mode and re-edit xorg.conf, but I'd rather ask first and do it the right way than have to repair a broken system.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Monitor Display Is Messed Up After "waking" Up?

Feb 24, 2011

I'm running ubuntu lucid on a home-built computer with an ATI Radeon R300 NE [Radeon 9500 pro] video card and a cheap-o (Norcent) flat panel. Within the last week I've had a problem where the display gets horizontal and vertical stripes when I "wake it up" with the mouse. I can almost see what is supposed to be on the screen and I can use the mouse (the cursor is a big blocky area) enough to shut the computer down. Oddly, opening a new terminal (TTY1?) using Ctrl-Shift-F1 doesn't fix the monitor problem. Also, you can see the display problem when using xvnc4viewer from another computer.

I have found a number of similar issues in the forums, but haven't found a solution (nor can I find xorg.conf in lucid...). It just happened, so I wonder if it is something that broke in an update. There is nothing recorded in the logs that seem to apply to video problems.

Fedora :: MAYDAY Accidentally Messed Up Fedora Core 12 Partition - Error Reading The Disk

Jan 18, 2010

I did a horrible mistake due to lapse in my concentration. Here is the 80 GB IDE disk geometry:

=> C: Windows XP SP2 15 GB partition
=> D: NTFS parition - 10 GB
=> E:F:G:H: NTFS partitions on the Windows Extended partition.
=> On the same Extended partition, there exists Linux /swap and /root partitions.

What happened was:

a) I wanted to delete the H: parition which was residing adjacent to Linux partition
b) By mistake I opened the Explorer and clicked the Mouse on H: partition and left it like that (forgot)
c) I opened Add/Remove program list but did nothing, to do few uninstalls after partition deletion.
d) Now I opened compmgmt.msc for Disk Management then deleted the H: partition!

Then XP reacted strangely and got almost hung

e) Then I switched OFF and ON the PC.
f) Most shocking was GRUB screen vanished (crash console appears) which means that Linux partition got deleted instead of H: partition!!

It's important to share with you that Fedora Core 12 possess the default BOOT flag. I thought that it's nothing big deal, only a case of Boot flag toggle with DOS bootable CD but am shell shocked to find after hitting the fdisk from DOS it says Error reading the disk!!! I felt like collapsed for a while, don't know how I did such a mistake. how to boot into my Windows XP. I can't afford to loose data or bear the expense on Data recovery
