i had 10.4 installed perfectly under a different partition but when i try to boot xp, i get a missing hal.dll error. so i patched up xp but now cannot get into ubuntu. how do i fix this booting problem? also my swap of 10g is probably overkill. if i could change that. but its not a priority, i just want my ubuntu back. here are my diagnostics:

I think I may have attempted to resize this and I got this error. I cannot get into windows to fix anything, so I can't run scan disk or fix disk etc. I'm not sure if I can get a command prompt. I don't have a CD drive. Can I reinstall linux and use the entire hard drive? Will it do this, or will the cluster errors prevent this? Can I fix this so to resize the windows partition?
I was trying to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot on my Windows Vista laptop. The hard drive is 250 gb: Vista boot 157 gb partition; a partially-occupied 33 gb partition which was designated as swap-space; a newly partitioned and ext3 formatted 30gb for the Ubuntu installation. I believe there is also a hidden partition ~20 gb with "hidden" system info. During installation I received an error message concerning the swap space partition, which forced me out of the installation and back to the ubuntu partition manager screen. Now in Vista my 33 and 30 gb partitions are missing. Is there anyway I can get back to pre-Ubuntu state?

Usually I have no issue at all installing a barebones sid system, but over the last week I've had the same error over and over.
The issue appears to of been resolved. I guess something server side was tweaked.
I'm trying to install Fedora 11 for the first time. The plan is to create a 10Gig partition on which i would put Fedora and leave Vista on the other partition. i have fedora12 and have been noticing that on a few programs (xvidcap, nALFS; just to name a couple) anyways these programs when i go to install they will come up with a missing dependency error and so i'll go hunt them down and install them and i am told that they are already installed...so what is the deal...any ideas. should i just go for a reinstall of the whole system?

So I have a single hard drive with two partitions, and I am trying to install a dual boot of Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, I am having an issue installing the Windows XP component.
I keep getting an error along the lines of a missing/corrupt hal.dll after the first restart in the install. This has happened every time I tried to install windows XP, from several different discs, all of which I have confirmed to work on another computer.
I have tried several things for fixing this, from repairing the MBR and boot.ini to replacing hal.dll from hal.dl_, and nothing works. However, Ubuntu 10.04 installs and boots properly.
What I can do to get Windows to install properly?
My previous setup was Windows Vista on partition 1, Windows 7 on partition 2, and my recovery partition on partition 3. I'm trying to switch from vista to fedora (cuz I hate vista), so I removed partition 1 and 3, expanded partition 2 a bit (from 80 gig to 150), and moved it all the way to the left with gparted. This gave me a 150g partition labled sda2 as my first partition. I then installed fedora on the (about) 150g of free space. After going into fedora, I used fdisk /dev/sda with menu option f to fix my partition labels. Now I have Windows 7 on partition sda1, fedora's boot on sda2, and fedora on a logical volume in sda3.
My issue is that I have that same old error bootmgr is missing when I try to boot to windows 7. I checked my grub menu, my fdisk, it all looks good to me, so hopefully someone can help me out. If I'm unable to do this without reformatting, could someone please advise me on a program to clone my windows 7? I have a lot of expensive programs on there that I could, in theory, go back to the manufacturer and request a new copy, but I doubt if I even have any license keys written down and I don't know where they would be, so hopefully I can pull them all off and have them work on a new install. I was trying to figure out how to use Synaptic to fix some dependancy errors I was getting, and set it to remove a certain package. It said it had to remove other packages as well to do this, well that ended up being Gnome and a whole bunch of other stuff. Silly me.So I was alright without having Gnome and went back to writing simple c++ from this book. I wrote a program to output a range of numbers and ran it but had written it wrong, so it would have ran on for hours. So I just killed the power and tried to start the comp again.
This time after the Dell boot screen it would tell me my system battery was low and strike F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup. Hit F1 and Im told that a file wasnt found and then it goes to the Ubuntu loading screen (The logo and some dots underneath) and then a black screen. Nothing else.I figured I needed to reintall and dont have any CDs so tried to make a live CD and this time when I try to boot from USB device get a "Missing Operating System" error.Its set to boot from USB device before harddrive. View 4 Replies View RelatedLast night I let the automatic updating of packages ran on my Fedora 10 installation. It has been a few months since I ran the updating and so it took quite long. I did not monitor it closely so I am not sure which packages were updated. After the update was completed, when I restarted my computer it halted during the boot up process at the point when it was trying to mount the root file system. The error message is "mount: missing mount point".
I booted the computer using the F10 DVD and used the rescue mode to look into the /boot directory. The kernel that was booting by default was 2.6.27.25-170.2.72.fc10.x86_64.There were two older F10 kernels in /boot and so I tried booting with them. The boot process went further but I was still not able to boot up F10 successfully. There were many error messages about not being able to touch files in /var/lock/subsys as it is a read-only file system.
