Ubuntu :: How To Connect To Windows 7 Home Premium Share

Dec 26, 2010

I am having difficulty connecting to a PC that runs Windows 7 (and suffice it to say Windows XP as well). I go to Places > Connect to Server and choose Windows share from the drop-down list. I enter in the computer's IP address in the Server field and click Connect, when I'm brought to the "Password required for x" screen (x being the IP address). I enter my username for the Windows machine, leave the Domain field as is (it is WORKGROUP by default, which is the Workgroup name for both PCs), and then I enter my Windows password. The dialog keeps popping up as if I entered incorrect credentials. I do want to point out, on the dialog, it asks for a Domain name. Since I do not have this computer connected to a domain (I'm at home), it is a workgroup network. However, prior to Ubuntu 10.10, I was able to use this method to connect to Windows computers.

Fedora :: Running A Dual Boot Windows 7 Home Premium And 12 System On An AMD Phenom Platform

May 31, 2010

I am/was(?) running a dual boot Windows 7 Home Premium and Fedora 12 system on an AMD Phenom platform.

I thought that I would try the KDE desktop and installed it with the command

yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"

After tasting KDE for a while I decided that I far prefer Gnome.

I removed the KDE with

yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"

This appeared to work but I then found that whilst I can boot into Windows 7, I can no longer boot into Fedora 12.

I have tried booting the F12 DVD and going into to the Rescue function. I re-installed grub but still cannot boot into F12.

I have looked at grub.conf but can see nothing wrong.

Ubuntu :: Share A Home Partition Between Lucid Windows 7

Jul 8, 2010

I was going to freshly format my laptop with Windows 7 x86_64 and Lucid Lynx x86_x64... I have a HUGE amount of media (music, videos, pictures, documents) and I don't keep all of it on my external harddrive.

The plan is to have the basic 2 partitions for Windows 7 and Ubuntu but I would like to have a 3rd partition that is just for media that I could share between the two OSes. I guess I would create symbolic links in the Ubuntu Home folder to point to the partition with media and in Windows I could probably just add those folders to libraries (unless someone knows how to move the User folder to another parition?)

What should I format this new partition as? NTFS? It needs to support files larger than 4GB and Windows can't read/write to basically anything.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To Windows Share Printer From 10.10?

Dec 6, 2010

I have shared my cpl-300 from my windows 7 machine to my network, so that may print from my linux laptop to it.

Now whenever I go to system -> Administration -> Printing and try and browse for my printer it asks for a username and password any username or password I enter that is on the windows 7 machine gets rejected.

So I tested to see what would happen if you used smbclient to view the shares available from the windows 7 machine, unfortunately it results in another permission error. The funny thing is I can mount a share using "mount -t cifs".

Fedora Networking :: How To Connect To Windows Share?

Mar 27, 2011

I'm running Fedora 13 on my laptop and am trying to share out a folder from a Win7 computer. Folder on Win7 machine is set to allow access to everyone. In Fedora, I have SELinux disable, I've made sure samba is allowed in the firewall, and that the smb service is running. There's no password on the Win7 computer, so in the Windows Share setting on Fedora I just put the username and left the pass field blank.

I've seen some things say all you have to do is go the the "Network" place...but somehow that seems to have become non-existent and I don't know how to get it back. Also, trying to connect to smb://WinShare/Share results in it saying that the server has timed out.

My friend is trying to share his clearwire connection with me using Windows ICS. Using network-manager or wicd, I am unable to connect to his share. I am able to connect unencrypted with iwconfig, to the ad-hoc network, and then use dhclient to gain ip address.

I am not able to connect to WPA encrypted share using network-manager or wicd. nm-applet crashes when trying to connect. I am attempting to setup wpa_supplicant, but haven't got it working yet.As usual, the wireless networking out of the box experience in Ubuntu doesn't work. This is extremely frustrating. If Ubunut's goals are to be the default desktop, then these guys need to get wifi that "Just Works"...

Debian Configuration :: Connect Jessie To Windows Share - Network And CIFS

Dec 4, 2015

I try to connect my Debian Jessie to my Windows share

This is what I have done:

-> 1 - create an .smbcredentials file located in my /home directory (with account / password and domain)
-> 2 - implement /etc/fstab with information like that :
//192.168.x.x/Animes/media/Animes cifs uid=toto,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777,credentials=/home/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf800

and when I try to go on my windows share, I have this message:

An error occurred while accessing 'Home', the system responded: mount: only root can mount //192.168.x.x/Audio-Video-01 on /media/Audio-Video-01

I think about one thing, if uid=toto is different in fstab than my current debian account session name, it is possible the problem came because of that?

(fstab, uid=toto and current session titi)

CentOS 5 Server :: Openvpn Connect To Samba Share From Windows XP Client?

Sep 15, 2009

I'm trying to set up a VPN connection between our CentOS 5.3 server at work and my bosses XP computer at home. At this point, we are kinda locked into Quickbooks. I'm testing the connection from my XP boot at home to see if it works. I can log into our servicemanuals easily enough from XP at home however, the windows takes forever to update. I have the Samba server only listening on port 445 because is seems to work more efficiently at work. I connect to the Samba shares via linux from home and everything works well but, when I try to do anything with the shares from Windows client at home, it's very slow!

I'm thinking that it must have something either to do with the Windows OpenVPN client or the client.conf file. Is there anything I should look at in the .conf file for answers?

Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.
