View 7 Replies View RelatedWhy isn't there a clear warning against selecting the 'update' option in Meerkat?I know it seems like a good idea to have it, but unless a server speed test is run, it adds a huge amount of time to the install (3 1/2 hours of downloading so far). It's not my internet connection (ADSL2+ - fast), so it must be an overloaded server and/or congested intercontinental data pipes.
After the installation, it's possible to find one's optimal (fastest) server before running updates - and I know from past experience that this makes a huge difference to little old me in Australia. I can certainly update everything much faster than I am currently seeing . I strongly recommend that, if this option is kept in future distributions, it should include a server speed test (and auto selection of the best server?) as well as a realistic warning to the user.

when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running VBOX OSE and wanted to access files on my native machine (ubuntu 9.10) from my virtual machine (Windows XP professional)
Now, I can ping the native host from the XP box, but can't access the share.
I have tried re-sharing the directory but it won't work.
Another interesting aspect is that I can't access the VBOX either. It gives me the error:
"Error: Failed to retrieve share list from server Please select another viewer and try again."
Up until this morning it worked just fine.
Unfortunately I didn't pay attention which software was updated during the process.
I installed 10.04 yesterday. The computer had an MS OS on it but I chose to format the entire HD for Ubuntu. The install seemed to go fine. When logged in there were updates available, and I installed all of them. After a reboot I tried getting on the internet and found that my network was 'disconnected'. I've checked the cabling, and that the LAN is still enabled in the BIOS. I assume the network had to have been functioning to do the original update. How do I figure out what changed. I've been reading the network section of a Linux book and came up with a little data that might help. My hardware is listed after the host file.

I upgraded my desktop from 9.10 to 10.04. The updated system works without problem - except that apt-get/Update Manager/Synamptic does not connect to the net anymore.
When I try to check for updates with the update manager, I get the message below. I have set different servers with the same result, and checked if there is a proxy set up somewhere, which is not. I also tried apt-get with the fix flag.
When I access the uri's with a browser, that works without a problem.

Your current network has a .local domain, which is not recommended and incompatible with the Avahi network service discovery. The service has been disabled." The computer will not respond to anything, completely frozen--I am not able to open any programs and the CPU itself seems to be running loudly.

Can I add the LAN ethernet interface using ifconfig and connect to the net to install the network-manager again?
After updating/upgrading my packages this morning, the terminal profile preferences screen (Edit > Profile Preferences) no longer had the option at the bottom for setting the default terminal size. This is a problem because the default size went from the 132x43 I had set it to down to 80x24. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on three machines and had this problem on all of them. After noticing the problem on the first machine, I checked the option screens of the other machines before upgrading. The default size option was there before the upgrades, but after upgrading, it was gone.

It's almost surely gnome-terminal or gnome-terminal-data, but I included the full list just in case. What are my options for fixing this? Should I try rolling back the upgrade? Should I not bother with that and just try setting the default terminal size through other means?
I have Fedora 10, and today I finally had an opportunity to let the automatic software updates run. At the end it said to restart the pc. I restarted and now it won't connect to the network. What do I do to get it connected again?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've installed opensuse 11.3 on my computer (well actually Ive done it twice, once with full DVD image and once with network install). Everything was OK until Ive made update (yast/software/online update <-- BTW kupdate applet isn't working, just update bar appear and stuck on 0%). i haven't installed any additional packages, only the defaults (KDE desktop). after update only fail safe option is working (booting normally and looks like normal desktop, no visual differences between normal and fail safe booting, if there should been any). When I've tried to find solution for this problem, very ofter answers were -> graphic drivers problem (im using ati hd 4670 AGP <-- yea, AGP . well when i start normal boot green screen with lizard logo appear, then screen goes black for a second or two, then the green screen come again, and after another few second screen goes black permanently with working hdd for 30-40 second (hdd led blinking) BTW i have windows7 pro (booting fine) on this machine too, it was installed as first system on hd0,0. opensuse was installed on stand alone PATA disk (secondary EIDE master, ODD on slave). how to gather info which u all need to get this problem more detailed. Somehow, the cups daemon wasn't running, but I fixed that by downgrading (sic) libgcrypt11.
I've tried both the samba and the samba4 packages.
Since before I started worrying about this, I got an error message while booting up that the winbind daemon had failed to load. I've tried reinstalling it, but that hasn't done anything.
I just installed ubuntu on my d620.The wireless card seems to exist and looks fine but I don't know how to turn it on.It says the network is disabled everywhere I look but I can't find the option to turn it on.I know this is probably simple. Below is the output from various commands.I included my service tag which you can use on the dell site to find specifics about my hardware.I can't do ifconfig wlan0 up which is the only solution I've found online so far.

When I use NetworkManager, WPA or WPA2 are not an option. I'm give four encryption methods (WEP 40, WEP 128, LEAP and Dynamic 801.x) Is this a problem with my Thinkpad T23's 802.11b wireless card? I just installed F14 today, all day I have been trying to get my wifi to work, I keep running in problems I found many threads with links to download drivers. I did that and in the README file loses me. It talks about compile driver from the source code.

I had success on that front, however, in the process of installing it, the option to connect to any wireless network disappeared. It isn't that there is no wireless network in range, rather, the entire wireless option itself has vanished.

View 8 Replies View Relateda Toshiba L650 laptop, and installed F13 x86-64 on a disk partition using install DVD. The wired ethernet on this is Atheros AR8152, and the Wireless is Broadcomm 4313. Both these devices are not supported by default. So, as per instructions on the Linux Wireless site, and some guidance on this forum, have downloaded the Broadcomm driver tar on another machine, copied it onto the Toshiba laptop using a USB device, and then extracted, and ran the b43-fwcutter. The subdirectory /lib/firmware/b43 is created and has approx 3 dozen files. However, the Broadcomm driver is not showing up as an option in the Network Manager (system-config-network) or in the lsmod command output. I tried to manually add it by doing modprobe b43 command - it then begins to appear in the lsmod, but the option to add the Broadcomm wireless driver during a "New wireless Hardware" is not appearing still. I think, at an abstract level, I need to somehow "tell" the system to add the Broadcomm driver - am just not sure how to do so. On the other hand, the Atheros AR8152 has no driver as of now, so the wired Ethernet is also not connecting. how I can download all the required files on a different machine, and then install it on the Toshiba laptop?

I have a MSI a6000 Laptop (that has given me a lot of problems installing Ubuntu.
I finally had to run Ubuntu from a CD in nomodeset
Then when I go to install Ubuntu the only options it gives (regarding my harddrive) are to format my whole hardrive or do the partitioning. I have seen screenshots though where there is a third option on the same page to install ubuntu alongside a prior OS and dual boot.
Does anyone know why the "install alongside a prior OS (dual boot)" option doesn't show up?
