I did the normal sudo apt-get update and upgrade this morning and after a restart, the network-manager is gone!
nm-applet command does not work anymore.
Can I add the LAN ethernet interface using ifconfig and connect to the net to install the network-manager again?
I'm upgrading my machines UDTE-64 from 9.10 to 10.4LTS. 9.10 is working fine. I just want to upgrade to a current LTS release.Update manager showed the way on one desktop and I upgraded successfully.On another desktop and a laptop, update manager does not show that a new release is available. It's fair game to tell me to use the live cd so long as I preserve user data.

I just bought a USB Hard Drive to install ubuntu to show friends. I was able to boot the Live CD but I noticed the option to install to USB was missing. I believe I last saw this in 8.10. So, I went searching the forums for solutions but all I found was the Windows Executable "usb-installer.exe" . So, I try to look for this, its not there. Does anyone know what I need to do to do this? I'm going to be using this as a portable install across lots of different computers, Does this make a difference?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was running Ubuntu 9.10 on my HP G70 laptop and did an upgrade using upgrade manager to Ubuntu 10.04.
Since I haven't been able to get wifi connection or wired working. The Network Manager applet is missing from the notification area and if I try to run nm-applet manually it says it is already running. I tried killing the process and then running it manually in the terminal and although the process appears to be running it is missing from the panel.
Booting into the live cd has the applet working fine so something in the upgrade process must have failed.
I tried changing the theme to see if it displays in other themes but had no luck.
I also tried to log into kde but kde seems to be broken. When I log into it after the splash screen all I get is a black screen with only my mouse pointer.
I upgraded my desktop from 9.10 to 10.04. The updated system works without problem - except that apt-get/Update Manager/Synamptic does not connect to the net anymore.
When I try to check for updates with the update manager, I get the message below. I have set different servers with the same result, and checked if there is a proxy set up somewhere, which is not. I also tried apt-get with the fix flag.
When I access the uri's with a browser, that works without a problem.

I initiated the on-line upgrade from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS. When the upgrade finished and restarted the computer, I got the following messages:

I was able to go online yesterday using Ubuntu, but now I cannot. For some reason, when I ping an address, like [URL], it tells me this: ping: unknown host [URL]

I cannot find network manager from my panel, how can I get back online now? I am online using a different system on my computer as I speak via Windows.
Im running Ubuntu Studio 10.04 LTS. I've looked for the network manager all over and its just not here. Is there some way to get it? I cant connect to the internet at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some reason when I booted today the network manager icon to disconnect and connect to different wireless networks was missing. I've read various post and have been unable to resolve this issue. Here is what I've tried.
1. Clicking in Add Panel and adding network monitor. This seems to be not included on the list of choices.
2. Clicking in Add Panel and click the Add Notification choice. This didn't seem to add anything to the panel.
3. Remove the Notification area and then re-add it. Did this and not the area is blank except for my dropbox icon. I don't have the date, logon or logoff dropdown, or network manager icon anymore. I've rebooted several times.
I can't connect to my wireless network anymore. Is there another way to manager wireless connections other then that panel tool?
At first I use to have a Network manager applet for my wireless connection in the panel. But somehow it has gone missing from the panel. I am quite puzzle as to how it happen. So I just need to get it back so that I know whether or not it has been connected to my wireless router.

Just installed (clean install) of Ubuntu 10.10 on an old desktop pc. The network manager icon is missing, Buy the way i had to run install from safemode. As I was having problems with login in, I kept trying to login in to the normal desktop but Ubuntu kept thinking about it for approximetly ten seconds and then asking me to login in again repeatedly. however when i switch to guest user on the guest desktop the network manager icon appears. I have used this icon to enter a mobile broadband account and to connect up to and down load all updates surf etc.Read a number posts and find this problem with the network manager icon are quite common. View 10 Replies View RelatedI attempted a distribution upgrade from 8.04LTS (32 bit) to 10.04LTS (32 bit). Once converted, I had no wireless or wired internet, along with numerous other bugs. After relentless hours of trying to resolve the problems, I converted back to 8.04LTS and installed the b43 drivers; I have wireless, however, still no wired connection. I've provided the outputs of the "sudo lshw -C network" terminal command below both before conversion to 10.04 and after reversion back to 8.04LTS. You'll notice that the NIC is not even listed after reversion (this is the same output that 10.04LTS gave me as well).
1.) Does anyone know if the terminal command will identify the NIC if the NIC Driver (assuming it's tg3) is not installed?
2.) Does 8.04LTS and 10.04LTS have a pre-installed NIC driver that is not compatible with the bcm5705?

I've recently upgraded from 8.04LTS to 10.04LTS. About 90% of the time after boot-up, my mouse cursor seems to be corrupted; I can vaguely see the arrow (or part of it anyway) underneath some squiggly lines. The application KeePassX is affected too; there are some display corruption issues. Sometimes (maybe 1 boot in 10) the mouse cursor looks fine. I have a Radeon 9200 and have looked in the Forum for similar problems but they don't quite match up to mine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my Debian stretch via apt-get and I noticed that the network manager is missing at least 2 icons: the mobile broadband icon and the settings icon. I haven't found any bug reports or other information about how to restore them. The icons were there after initial installation of version 8.2.0 from DVD.

Add to panel-->Notification area....beacuse the notification area is already there..
but the icons are not visible
the only way that I can make the visible is by typing code...
for volume control.. Only then they become visible in the notification area
Both, the network manager and volume control are mentioned in the "Start-up programs"

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
After a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10-64bit I don't have Hardware Manager, Update Manager or Software Resources just to name a few.I tried sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get upgrade & everything is up to date.

I have just started using fedora 13 and I am not sure if i am in the right area but here goes...today I was online in my fedora 13 partition on my laptop and I had been online for quite a while then I shut down my machine to recharge the battery then a couple hours later I turned it back on and all of a sudden my network manager applet was missing and I could not connect to the internet, I opened firefox and tried to get to my homepage but it basically just told me that I wasnt connected..
I suspected at first for some strange reason that MAYBE it was my NIC so I booted up into my vista partition and low and behold the internet works fine, so the problem is on the linux side, I have tried every command nm-applet but it just keeps saying an instance of nm-applet is already running, I have no clue how to restore the network manager and get my internet back and the only other piece of information I have is that earlier today I did do a bunch of security updates but the internet was working fine all day even after several reboots through out the day.
I have an asus pc, and its network hardware is not recognized by debian, the drivers are not even in the list provided during the installation process. I managed to download them from another pc, but if i try to make them and install them, i'm stucked because Make is not installed on debian (nor is sudo).So i need a connection to install the drivers that provide me a co0nnections..

I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.
having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package
