Ubuntu :: Backed Up Windows Files Using Live CD - Windows Can't See Them

Dec 1, 2010

They have pictures and documents everywhere so I figured I would just backup their entire HDD onto my external one and let them go in and transfer them back off. I keep proper backups so this isn't how I normally do things. I have done similar things in the past with dieing HDD's and Knoppix but I have never had this issue. I burned a CD using the latest ISO and Ubuntu seen both the main HDD and my external. I just copied all the contents of the main HDD over to the external. All went well and I could browse and view all the files from the external HDD after the transfer using the live CD. Unfortunately I am having an issue seeing the external HDD in Windows. As soon as I hook the drive up - windows says I need to Format it(Which I won't do obviously). But if I boot the live CD I can still see and use the files. How do can I get windows to see the drive and files without destroying data?

Ubuntu :: Make Sure Everything Backed Up Correctly?

Mar 12, 2010

I finally bought a second hard drive to back up all my files since I'm planning on wiping my hard drive completely clean and reinstalling Windows and Ubuntu once Lucid comes out. I'm just wondering, how common is it for files to become corrupt when transferring from one hard drive to another? I ask this because I usually have trouble when transferring (usually large files) onto my flash drive. I know that actual hard drives are different but I just want to make sure. Also, is there a way I can confirm that everything transferred correctly? Most of my files are music so it would be a pain to check every single one to see if it works.

Ubuntu :: How To Get Backed Up Music Back

Oct 11, 2010

On my Ubuntu One Personal Cloud, I did not realize that "rm -f"-ing music files on my computer itself would actually remove the files online as well!I was able to recover 10 of the songs from my iPod, but two of them are still unrecoverable. Is there any way to get them back without having to re-purchase them? I could easily purchase them myself (have a debit card, a checking account, and a job), but I would hate for my mother to have to purchase them again. Not knowing that deleting and reinstalling them (considering some of them got corrupted on my computer) would also delete them online is not enough to warrant having to lose the songs permanently.

OpenSUSE :: Retrieving Backed Up Album Art For Amarok?

Sep 20, 2010

I recently deleted my .kde4 folder and lost all the album art and lyrics I had saved in Amarok. I have a back up but openSUSE doesn't recognized the file type and won't copy the files to the new albumcovers folder in .amarok. The file name is a mixture of numbers and letters with no file extension.

I downloaded a few album covers in Amarok and openSUSE recognizes these as jpeg files, even though there's no jpg file extension in the file name. If I right click on of the files from my backup and choose to open it with Amarok, then the album art appears, and it's also added to the albumcovers folder in .amarok, and recognized as a jpeg file!

Anyone know why openSUSE doesn't recognize the files from my backup? Or how I can import all of the album art and lyrics from my back up all at the same time?

General :: Osx - Keep Folders Synced And Backed Up Between Two Macs Using A NAS (rsync)

Sep 16, 2011

I've got two primary computers, one Mac Pro and one MacBook Pro for when I'm on the go. I've also got a Linux sever which also acts as NAS. Currently I backup the entire computers to an external drive with Time Machine which is rather useless and doesn't sync anything. What I really want to do is to keep my important files synced between both computers and my NAS (which is running RAID 5), that way I'm not backing up easily replaceable systemfiles and I've got all my important files in 3 places where two of them are running raid so at least 5 drives would have to crash at the same time before actual data loss occur.

Folders I want to keep synced is basically my photo, documents, development, mamp and work folders and then I want to keep the user library folder backed up but not synced. I'm thinking that I'd have to use rsync but don't know how. Before suggesting Dropbox and similar suggestions I don't want to use them because of several reasons some of them being security (Dropbox obviously proved this), Speed (sometimes I'll sync gigabytes of data and that will be significantly faster locally and probably even through VPN as I have a Gigabit pipe), Space (space on my NAS is cheap and only practically limited by my needs), reliability (even if my internet were to go down I still need to be able to keep my files synced incase I'd need to go somewhere on the fly), price (I already have all the hardware and for the amount of gigabytes and bandwidth I'd need I doubt that there's any free or cheap service). Those are my main reason for wanting to keep it locally.

Debian :: Backed Up Firefox/Thunderbird Profiles In Iceweasel/dove?

Mar 2, 2011

I've been distro-hopping for a year or so, been through the downstream versions, Ubuntu and Mint, and ended up here. Other than some serious headaches getting wireless up and running, its been great so far. My trouble is that I have lots of use invested in Firefox and Thunderbird. As I've been hopping around through distros I've just been copying my profile folders and just placing them in the .mozilla and .thunderbird folders in my user folder. Then the software just pops up with all of my old settings, addons and messages, etc.

But this hasn't worked in iceweasel and icedove. I have been hunting around online today and haven't found any clues, and don't yet know enough about linux to hack this out and troubleshoot it. Any thoughts? Is it something to do with user agent settings? Or profile.ini files? I'd like to avoid manually installing the tarballs for Firefox and Thunderbird, but it is starting to seem like maybe it is easier. As I also have read that certain addons don't work with iceweasel?

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen After Fresh Installation Of Kubuntu 10.04

May 1, 2010

After the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 resulted in a black screen after reboot, I decided to don't waste more time, backed up my data and made a fresh installation.

First Issue [solved]: After I inserted the Kubuntu 10.04 Live-CD and started the system, I got to the CD's boot-mode selection menu. When I selected "Install Kubuntu", I got the Kubuntu bootscreen, but the system hang up then. I was able to solve this problem through pressing F6 in the boot-mode selection menu and setting "nomodeset". I also had to remove "quit splash" from the boot-entry line. Afterwards the installation process was fine.

Second Issue: I wanted to boot my new installated system, but, off course, got the blank screen again. So I edited the Grub-entry for recovery mode in the grubmenu (replaced "quit splash" with "nomodeset") and booted into recovery mode. I selected "netroot", and installed the proprietary nvidia-drivers with "apt-get install nvidia-current". Afterwards I ran "nvidia-xconfig" to generate the xorg.conf. To solve the blank screen issue, I edited the /boot/grub/grub.cfg the same way I described above and rebooted. Now I don't get a blank screen anymore, but I also don't get an XServer. The system boots now (off course without splash and "unquit"), but drops me into the tty1... When I type "sudo service kdm start", I get into KDM and can login, but I get many errors and crash-reports there. I also don't have any internet. I only have internet when booting in recovery mode and select "netroot".

I'm a bit surprised that Ubuntu released a LTS-Version that causes so much trouble (I've searched the forum and it seems that I'm not the only one with such big problems). Has Ubuntu droped support for NVidia-users?

Ubuntu :: Desktop Bug After Fresh Installation?

Jan 2, 2011

Not sure if this is the place, but I can't seem to find a solution to the following problem. I recently wanted to move from windows to linux and decided to do so today. My computer is HP laptop that had Windows Vista on it. The hardware is more than enough to run Linux.

I booted off the Linux DVD that I created and it booted fine, and looks just like the Ubuntu I have on another computer. I asked it to install and it seemed like it all turned out fine until I rebooted my machine. When I rebooted, it booted to the normal desktop but didnt have the top bar (one with ubuntu symbol on left, wireless options and time etc on the right.) or the application column on the left of the screen. When I clicked in the areas where the applications should be, they would start fine. The main thing is, that it is very hard to navigate if I can't see anything about the top bar or the application column. Is this a common problem and how might I fix it?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - No Grub After Fresh Install

Jun 8, 2010

I have a new 500GB disk, with a partition with Windows XP, one with Windows 7, one for Ubuntu 10.04, one for /Home and one for swap. The systems were installed in that order. But after finishing with the Ubuntu installation, removing the CD from the drive and restarting, GRUB never showed up, and the system went straight to the Windows OS selector; the one prompting to start Windows 7 or an "Earlier version of Windows". So I can't get to Ubuntu, even though it seems it installed just fine.

As a note: just after the installation process ends and it shows the "remove CD" message, it spilled out a list of I/O errors in some sr0 device or something. But I just installed the same Ubuntu on a friend's computer and it showed a similar error list, yet his system works just fine... However, he doesn't have Windows 7, thus no OS selection screen other than GRUB. I didn't want to rush into editing the MBR or re-installing GRUB before I knew I had to do that.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get Fresh Install Of 11.04 Work

Apr 30, 2011

I trying to dual boot Ubuntu/Windows 7 on my computer. Here is my problem:

Info:
I used Wubi and ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso.
Main OS: Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Videocard: Nvidia GT 240

Problems (underlined) as they occured:

1) Installed Ubuntu within Windows, rebooted, saw Ubuntu loading screen (with dots) and then I get graphics corruption (it's really bad I can't recognize anything in the screen).

Then I booted in recovery/failsafe graphic mode and I let the installation finish, then automatically rebooted.

2) Let it boot without pressing anything and instead of graphic corruption it boots in terminal.

Tried startx command but it says something relative to "x not found". Then I found out I had to install proprietary Nvidia drivers so I:

3) Booted again in failsafe graphic mode (in recovery mode) and tried to install it but... no internet connection.

I tried "sudo ifconfig eth0 up" and I got: eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

NOTE: If I let it boot itself (terminal) I HAVE internet connection (found out with wget and ping commands).

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh Arch Netinstall Will Not Boot

Apr 17, 2010

I like Arch so far. The first time I installed Arch, everything went fine. I had a good openbox/SLIM configuration, but for some reason I just got a black screen w/ a mouse that didn't move whenever I tried to use the radeon driver (which works with my card). Anyways, I uninstalled Arch and reinstalled Fedora, but after my second attempt to install Arch (I have nothing better to do), arch suddenly wouldn't boot at all after a netinstall. Doing a core install went fine, but when I tried to update it and reboot, the same thing happened as the netinstall: The screen goes on standby and the CPU is spiked at %100 (I know this because my fan goes to full speed when the CPU jumps up too high - long story).

Not even doing that Skinny Elephants trick worked, so I'm guessing it was a complete kernel panic. I don't exactly know how to check for logs when the system is unbootable, but in retrospect I coulda just booted into a livecd. I just looked in /var/log of a recent Arch install on this computer, and there doesn't seem to be anything there. A file called 'lastlog', but I'm not sure it's anything. I can't open it with gedit or cat, so I'm assuming it's a garbage file. Adding 'nomodprobe' into menu.lst in Arch allowed it to boot, but I could only use the vesa driver with Xorg (using radeon caused a black screen showing only a cursor), which isn't ideal.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can I Install Fresh U10.04 LAMP Without Suhosin

Jun 5, 2010

I'm going crazy with the problem I posted on yesterday about Wordpress not working properly on my Ubuntu systems on the LAN. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1501043

After comparing results from phpinfo() with those from my public server, making a few adjustments and still seeing the same results, the biggest thing still to be tested is the Suhosin version of PHP. My public server doesn't have the Suhosin version installed. I can't figure out how to change the PHP to one without Suhosin, but I've seen some mentions of it not being installed by default on a fresh version of 10.04.

Is this true, and if so how can I build a LAMP server without Suhosin?
