Ubuntu Installation :: Apt: One File At A Time?
Jun 4, 2010
Aptitude and apt-get have a thing where they like to download more then one file at a time, maybe 2, maybe 3.Is there a way to have these programs only download one at a time?It'd help my unstable connection if these downloads would actually finish...

I need to get the modified date on a file in linux to use in a script.I tried using 'ls -l' on the file, but this caused problems when the date turned from a single digit into a double. The reason for the problem was because I was parsing the result string on spaces.How can I get the date of the last time a file was modified so I can use it in a script? For example, if a file was modified on 1/11/2010, I need the 11.

I am trying to modify the file access time in a Python routine I have. I have I believe the correct code for this but have a greater issue. Looking at a random file in my home directory I can see it was last accessed yesterday (I didn't open this file yesterday) so it was presumably my virus scan. No problem there Now I have opened the file today,rescanned the file for viruses and read the file in Python and the file access time remains the same!I have checked the access time by right clicking on the file and choosing Properties, using "ls -lu", and using os.stat(path) in Python.

Is there a bash command that I can use to determine the last file access time? I know about -atime option for the find command, but I want to doublecheck to make sure that I'm doing this correctly (the output when I use find -atime isn't what I expect).

How do you find a file modified March 17, 2010, between 3:30 pm and 4:05 pm? I know that I must be missing something somewhere.How do you search for info like this? I goggled "search files time Linux" and got about 38,300,000 results. I looked through the first four pages and did not see what I was looking for.Do I need to calculate how many minutes ago that is and give that to find.I really want to do this in the GUI so that I can operate on the files found without typing in so much stuff.

I don't think there is a way of doing this with date or clock commands. But maybe they are writing to some file and I can take a look at the file's modification time. dmesg and /var/log/messages show nothing relevant.

I have a newly installed Kubuntu 10.04 running here, works fine except for one thing.
I have a kind of "fileserver" and it has a samba share that I have mounted in the home folder of my desktop computer ("/home/xxx/fileserver", the server is running an older version of Ubuntu, can't exactly remember what it is but the filesystem is ext2, if that's of any importance).
I have large files on the server, mostly video. When I use Dolphin (or Konqueror, doesn't make any difference) and right click one of these large files and choose Properties, it takes a LONG time to load the properties window. As if it copies the file to local hd before opening properties, or something.
The reason why I posted here and not in the networking section is, that I had the exact same setup with my previous installation which was Kubuntu 8.04, and also at least three different Ubuntu's before that. Never had this problem before, so I think my server and networking thingies are okay.

I recently decided to install ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 to my Toshiba NB200. I was using windows and I wanted to completely erase them. I burned the USB, I followed every single instruction the site had, and even though the installation seemed to work, and a message to reboot my computer appeared at the end, the installation finally fails. When I reboot, the only thing I get is a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner. I tried the installation four to six times and even tried older versions as well but all I get is the black screen.

I used crontab to set a file playing at a certain time, this works fine; however I want this to run even if no-one is logged in (but the computer is on). I can't get it to do this
Line is: 30 06 * * * env DISPLAY=:0.0 /usr/bin/totem /home/adunaic/Playlist.pls
Okay I think the problem was with needing a GUI.
Using this instead works, but i only hear the sound when I log in. I think something needs to be doen to start the audio perhaps?
14 17 * * * export DISPLAY=:0.0 && /usr/bin/mpg123 /home/adunaic/alarm.mp3

I want to search in my apache log, for events which have occurred say between 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. I have got few scripts/commands but they are not conclusive, some of then are trying to do an exact match(awk) and for some i am just getting the pattern wrong (eGrep)
I am running RHEL.
Apache log eg:
================================================================
10.92.120.129 - - [24/Jun/2011:01:29:07 -0500] "GET /favicon.ico HTTP/1.1" 302
================================================================
now if i want to find out the logs from 1 PM to 2 PM
some example i had was:
cat <apache.log> | grep -E '07/Apr/20110[1-2]:[0-5][0-9]|02:00)'
small script in which i can pass the start time and end time range, and it should give an output of the rows which fall under that time range.

i am trying to read in a file 1 line at a time and for some reason it stops printing out at about line 62,000.
i am doing this:
Code:
while(fgets(c0, 1085, fstream0) != NULL)
but after about 62,0000 lines it stops printing. no seg-fault, no core dump. it just stops printing to the terminal then returns me to the command line after a couple of minutes. as a hack i am doing split -l 50000 on the input and calling my program 5 times.is there some limitation on fgets that i am not understanding ?

every time I reboot and play a video file the colours are messed up. I need to manually increase then decrease the hue or saturation to get the picture to normal in smplayer. The colours aren't competely inversed as in the common bug with the totem sliders, they're just far too red and bright.Smplayer is the latest from PPA. I've checked the totem settings and everything is OK. It only takes two key presses to resolve but it's a pain, to be honest, so if anyone knows what causes this and how to fix it permanently I'd be much obliged.

I use basic ssh and scp on a regular basis and sometimes for file transfer... certainly over public networks. However, often I want to transfer large (several GB) files from one place on my LAN to another.
I've read that FTP is the fastest, and when I'm transfering many GB, fast matters. Of course I know it's not secure, but I don't need security on my home wired LAN. What I do need many times is preservation of date and time of each file when uploading. Filezilla does that and I use it, but sometimes I need a CLI solution. I have use ncFTP and been happy with it until I realized it doesn't preserve date and time on uploads (probably not on downloads either, haven't looked).
Is there a CLI FTP solution out there that will preserve file date and time information on file transfers (including uploads)?
