Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Fast Forward Audio File / Enable This?

Jan 4, 2010

Just did a fresh install of Karmic, got all necessary decoders installed for video and audio playback...I think.

Problem is I can't forward/search in audio files I am playing. I mean I can only Play, Pause, Stop or "Next-track" a music file. Video files are fine.

I've tried Exaile, Rythmbox and even Totem. It is like the audio files are "half read-only".

If I drag a horizontal scroller in the music player and let it go, it will only jump back to the position where it is actually playing.

Has anyone experienced, this? I am a missing something in gstreamer or something like it?

It seems to having trouble playing DVD's and video files. it has a tendency to stop/freeze and sometimes if I try move the progress bar or scroll back or forward it wil just instantly close the Movie Player. I'm wondering is there a way to check it for bugs or is there a more reliable/better quality player that I could get instead.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Forward Audio To Windows Using JACK

Nov 1, 2010

Does anyone have any experience of forwarding audio from Ubuntu to Windows 7 x64 via JACK? I'm struggling to find any useful documentation. I've tried to accomplish the same using a Pulseaudio server, which is better documented but the windows binaries are years old and as far as I can tell can't be made to work without disabling IPv6. Any other ways to forward audio would also be welcome. Bandwidth isn't really an issue as it's VM to VM on the same machine.

For some reason in the 10.10 installer (I'm on a liveusb right now) I can't move forward. I'm in the Who are You? section. It just says "ready when you are" at the bottom though I can't move forward. I've typed in all the fields, what's wrong?I tried going back a few times and going forward but that doesn't help.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Midi And Audio Won't Work At The Same Time?

Jul 27, 2010

As an arranger of collegiate a cappella music, I often times need to listen to a song as I'm playing with a midi sequencer or some arranging software. On Ubuntu, since Gutsy, I've often run into the same problem from distribution to distribution:

Midi and audio won't work at the same time. If I have an audio file open on VLC or FireFox, I can't play Midi sequences on my arrangement. If I'm arranging and listening to Midi notes, I can't play music. Note that it's incredibly inconvenient to constantly close one so I can play the other to finish arrangements.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Audio Stops After A Brief Time Of Playing Through VLC?

Jun 26, 2011

I've added this packman repo: Index of /suse/openSUSE_11.4/ and installed all the necessary libraries and tools required as mentioned here using zypper: Restricted formats/11.4 - openSUSE Community Wiki When I try to play any movie in VLC I'm able to hear the audio for some time usually 3-4 mins and then audio totally stops though the video continues to play. A random seek or a seek forward/back also cause similar issue almost immediately. I switched the output module in VLC preference to different settings: default, SDL, Unix OSS, Alsa but the same issue persists. The audio recovers if I just enter the Audio settings menu in VLC preferences and click Save (even without changing anything) but after the same 3-4 mins or by seeking, the audio stops.

I disabled Pulseaudio for my sound card(s) in Yast->Sound, and I even kill the pulseaudio process but it somehow starts itself up again when I change anything in VLC audio preferences or even simply click Save without any changes. I've made sure all the multimedia related packages are installed from the packman repo whenever possible (I still observe there are few packages which do not exist on the packman but the openSUSE 11.4 repo alone eg. phonon-backend-gstreamer, phonon-backend-xine) Here is the rpm query output for the multimedia related libraries:

Code:

rpm --query --queryformat '%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}-%{ARCH} -> %{VENDOR}
' --all 'libav*' 'libpostproc*' 'libswscale*' '*xine*' '*gst*' MPlayer '*vlc*' | grep -v avahi | sort
banshee-1-backend-engine-gstreamer-2.0.0-0.3.2-x86_64 -> openSUSE

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Use Sound Card At The Same Time As Front Audio Jacks?

Jan 29, 2010

with my motherboard the onboard back sound jack's audio is VERY quiet, but the front jacks wired into HD audio work fine. (I'm building an htpc, btw.)

I tried for weeks to get it to work, but eventually I just pulled a cheap Dynex DX-SC51 card from another machine and turns out it works, but now I can't use the inputs and headphone jack on the front of the case without going into system>preferences>sound and changing "output" back to "internal analog audio stereo"

Is there any way to activate these two audio devices at the same time?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audio Plays Fine, But The Video Jumps And Can't Get A Clean Picture Except For Maybe 15% Of The Time?

Jan 1, 2010

I have 9.04 and I recently "got" a 13.2GB 1080p HD movie. When I try to play it, it's choppy and mosaic like. The audio plays fine, but the video jumps and I can't get a clean picture except for maybe 15% of the time. I have to hold down the spacebar so it plays and pauses very quickly for the video to even proceed. I've updates VLC and Movie Player and I've downloaded many codecs and I can't seem to fix it.EDIT: I can play it in Movie Player without the pixel/mosaic-like effect, but it too is extremely choppy.

Ubuntu Servers :: IP Forward Masquerading At Boot Time?

Sep 13, 2010

I am not a complete GNU/Linux newbie, each day I discover how little I know of this wonderful OS. The title of this post is actually a question for which I already have an answer, however, I can't seem to figure out why this happens. In order to enable ip_forwarding, I always enable it the same way, by issuing an:
#echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ipv4_forwarding.
I don't enable forwarding at boot time on purpose, I prefer to do it manually if the server crashes.

The thing is, I always write rules for iptables in order to enable it to NAT my packages through the router. However, last night, I forgot to load the proper iptables script, and instead, used a script I am currently tweaking. In this script, no rules are listed for both the forward chain and nat table in the POSTROUTING chain. Since forwarding was working (to my surprise, I might add) this could only mean, that the kernel default forwarding policies include masquerading. Is there a way to verify this?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Rip Audio From One .mp4 File And Then Generate One .mp3 File

Dec 19, 2010

So I use the following to rip audio from one .mp4 file and then generate one .mp3 file.

Code:
caleb@linux-vmp1:~> ffmpeg -i a -ab 128000 -ar 44100 01.mp3

Obviously, this takes a file named a and makes a file named 01 that is an mp3. It works great and I have used it many times. The problem is, I would like to rip the audio from several files all at once. I am sure there is a way to do it but I haven't stumbled upon the way to do it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Separate Vocals From Audio File?

Jun 10, 2010

I'm looking for a program that will allow me to remove the vocal from an audio file, and also provide the ability to remove background noise (as much as possible). I have an audio recording for a presentation we did at work recently, but the quality of the recording is not the best and there is quite a bit of background noise. I would like a way to clean up the file and amplify the vocals. I tried to use Audacity for this, but couldn't get it to work. Has anyone used a software program that provides this ability?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Extracting Audio From MP4 Video File

Jul 17, 2010

I'm trying to extract the audio from an mp4 video file and convert it to mp3 using ffmpeg. The problem is that the resulting audio file is only 3m2s long, whereas the video file is 8m15s long. Anyone know why the audio file is being truncated? Am I doing something wrong? Apart from being truncated the mp3 file plays perfectly. Here's what ffmpeg has to say about the video file:

Code:
Seems stream 1 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate: 59.83 (59834/1000) -> 29.92 (359/12)
Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'Part1.mp4':
Duration: 00:08:15.60, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 541 kb/s
Stream #0.0(und): Audio: aac, 44100 Hz, stereo, s16
Stream #0.1(und): Video: h264, yuv420p, 1152x720, 29.92 tbr, 29.92 tbn, 59.83 tbc

And here's the command I'm using to extract and convert the audio:
Code:
ffmpeg -i Part1.mp4 -ab 128k Part1.mp3

General :: Copy - Take A Snapshot Of A Directory As It Was At A Particular Point In Time?

Mar 4, 2011

I have a directory containing a lot of result log files (directory size ~ 4GB), and a set of processes running that keep on writing to these files. To be able to correctly analyze the results at a later time, I want to copy the whole directory to an archive destination, and I cannot stop the processes.

I want a copy of the directory as it was at a particular point of time. As the size directory is huge (which means it takes about 40 seconds to copy) and some of the files are being written to, a normal cp -r does NOT give me a snapshot at a particular point in time, rather a snapshot of files spread over some 40 seconds. This is not good enough.

Is there a way to get an exclusive lock on the directory and all its components while copying?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Open Different Audio File Tracks Into The Same Piano Roll?

Mar 24, 2010

My question would be this: is it possible to open different audio file tracks into the same piano roll, or even open multiple piano roll instances at the same time? If the answer is "no", then does anyone know a good LADSPA sampler plugin? Basically, I need to be able to load multiple samples into the same instrument and have them set to a range on the keyboard, similar to what the advanced sampler in Reason does.

Having multiple samples in the beat editor is not the same, as I need to control the note off (without re-loading the sample and just changing the end time, that is too cumbersome). If any of this seems weird I should specify that I am making breakcore music where drum beat samples are highly manipulated and a piano roll for each sample is just going to be too annoying to program.
