General :: Parsing File Dates - Get The Date Of The Last Time A File Was Modified ?

I need to get the modified date on a file in linux to use in a script.I tried using 'ls -l' on the file, but this caused problems when the date turned from a single digit into a double. The reason for the problem was because I was parsing the result string on spaces.How can I get the date of the last time a file was modified so I can use it in a script? For example, if a file was modified on 1/11/2010, I need the 11.

I have two linux servers, they are backup together.
1. Server 1 have 3 files with name: file1, file2, file3 in the path: /etc/sysconfig/network-script/.
2. Server 2 have 3 files with name and path are the same as server 1.
- How to make a script to copy 3 files at server1 to overwrite on server2. But before overwrite, this script will check and compare the last modified date of these 3 files(on server1 and server2). if the modified date of file1, file2 or file3 on server1 is newer than 3 files on server2 then overwrite process will do, if not, will do nothing.
- see my script as below: it works find now but just overwrite. not check last modified date.

Prior to making a fresh install of 10.04, I made a back up of all my documents by copying them to a NTFS partition. I did this my selecting files in File Browser, then right clicking and selecting the Copy command.
When I came to move the files back after the fresh install, I was mortified to find that all the file modification dates had changed to the date I copied them! I've lost all the original file dates, which was the principal way I sorted my files. I guess there's no way of getting it back? It seems that Linux does not store File Creation dates either so I'm stuffed.

How do you find a file modified March 17, 2010, between 3:30 pm and 4:05 pm? I know that I must be missing something somewhere.How do you search for info like this? I goggled "search files time Linux" and got about 38,300,000 results. I looked through the first four pages and did not see what I was looking for.Do I need to calculate how many minutes ago that is and give that to find.I really want to do this in the GUI so that I can operate on the files found without typing in so much stuff.

How do I know the time and date of a file downloaded from the net. Is it possible at all? If I want to know when the downloaded file such as a text file was created ie written by the author if not mentioed at all in the entire document. The command I use locally to know file creation time is given below.

I was going to do a rsync -r -a -z -v -p -e sshto move some files frome server to another, but then realized all I really need are files which have dates starting June 1, 2008 to current. Is there a way to have rsync only sync those files?he directory structure that's my source goes all the way back to 2004.

I am working on the script parsing specific message "TEST" from multiple file. The log file name looks like:
N3.2009-11-26-03-05-02.console.log.tar.gz
N4.2009-11-29-00-25-03.console.log.tar.gz
N6.2009-12-01-10-05-02.console.log.tar.gz
I am using the following command:
zgrep -a --text "TEST" * | awk -F"[ .,]" '{sub(".*:","",$6); sub(",.*","",$7); print $1,$6,$7,$10}
and getting
N3 2009-11-25 20:12:57 TEST
N4 2009-11-28 10:42:18 TEST
N6 2009-12-01 10:00:24 TEST
If I only want to search the log file after 2009-11-29, what shall I change the command?

I have log files that everyday are downloaded from my webserver in the format: Code: samplesite.com.xxxxxxxxxxx.gz xxxxxxxxxx is a 10 digit epoch time. I am trying to figure out a way in batch to:
1. find all of exisiting files containing the pattern (after the first run it will only be one a day)
2. Isolate the epoch string
3. convert the epoch string to human readable date/time
4. rename the original file as samplesite.com.mmddYYYY.gz

I am using CRON to create a new, blank file, every minute, in a specific location on my web server. I would really like to preserve a file's original modified date and pass it back to the file as the same attribute after a script has worked on it. I get a lot of JPEG files from different places on the Net which I either turn around and upload or burn to disk, and having the "original" date of either download or last mod in a graphics app would be for me, in the long run, a lot more helpful when deciding, for instance, which files to "recycle" or pass on backing up more than once.I've tried doing this on my own every now and then. Where I run into problems is that it appears "stat" and "date" use different formats for date information, and I can't seem to puzzle out how to "translate" one to the other satisfactorily for the latter command.
Just to give an example:
stat foo.jpg |grep Modify gives me
Modify: 2010-07-12 06:28:56.890625000 -0400
Passing that string as-is to date foo.jpg, I get the errordate: unknown option -- 0 and the usual semi-courteous suggestion to Try 'date --help' for more information.Somehow my TexInfo database got screwed up somewhere along the line and info dategives me the short article on date input formats, not the full documentation for the command

I like the easy readability of fwlogwatch (as compared to the Log File Viewer). But fwlogwatch doesn't display port number or date when I run it in terminal.
Is there a log viewer that displays clean like fwlogwatch but displays all the information that Log File Viewer does?

I am running webcam under Ubuntu 9.04 and I want to upload the images it captures to a server via ftp and have every image have a date and time in the filename. But I can't get this to work.From reading the man page for webcam it appears that I should be able to specify file = "webcam_%Y-%m-%d_%H:%M:%S.jpeg" and have it parsed so I get something like webcam_2010-01-05_10:54:23.jpeg but webcam is just uploading an image with an unparsed filename. So instead of getting a series of images on the server, I just get the most recent image (with the older images being overwritten every 1800 seconds). I know I could write a script on the server to rename the files as they are uploaded and put it on a cron but this seems to be something webcam should be able to handle.Here is my .webcamrc config file:

so I was wondering how I could do a simple find which would order the results by most recently modified. Here is the current fine I am using. (I am doing a shell escape in php, so that is the reasoning for the variables. find '$dir' -name '$str'* -print | head -10
How could I have this order the search by most recently modified. (Note I do not want it to sort 'after' the search, but rather find the results based on what was most recently modified)

I have a Redhat server that it is allowed rcp file from remote server, it is strange that after I modified the .rhosts, the server is no longer to accept rcp file , even I use other user to rcp files , the error is still "Permission denied", can advise what is wrong ? what daemon that I can try to restart ?

The field of interest (for me) are IP ADDRESS, Synopsys, Description, Solution and Risk Factor. I tried the following command to parse this:

But this would not give desired results as ':;;' is not a standard delimiter and hence gives incorrect results. how to grab everything that occurs between the strings 'Synopsys', 'Description', 'Solution' & 'Risk factor' in the above example? In other words i may be asking to use multiple delimiters.. in the order of occurance.. is there a tool that supports multiple delimiters?

I'm working on a alias/script that will make it easier to look at my environment via the set command.
On my ubunto when running set it also displays some 10 pages of code pertaining to something called "imagemagik". at the end of the output. This code begins with the { character.
This is annoying if I want to look at my environment when working on scripts. How could I use something like grep, awk, sed, or whatever to ignore everything after the "{" character.
That seems to be the simplest way as long as there are no leading brackets in my environment. (And if you're thinking I should just remove {imagemagik}, I might just do that. But I still would like to know how to do this).

I did some searches and after a few hours was able to get what I needed. What I didn't find was a fully encompased means of what I'm used to in the windows world in working with delimted files. Hopefully this is helpful to others and if there is something better or leaner way, even better.We have an issue where managing printers, just viewing on RHEL w/ sys-conf-prtr we lose any number of, up to ~30 printers from lpadmin. Rather than stare and compare to find the missing ones, I wanted to make an intuitive script. This is what I came up with.

I have a config file called hosts.cfg.
It contains entries like this:

If I want to know all the hosts that are in the hostgroup called SERVER_GRP, I suppose I would need to read every hostgroups line (8th directive in squiggly brackets) that contains SERVER_GRP and output the corresponding host_name line (1st directive in squiggly brackets) from that entry.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04. I wish I could use Nautilus to change file dates, but I guess that does not work.
