I recently migrated from SuSE 11.2 to UBUNTU 10.10.I didn't run into any major problems until I tried to boot into XP.The screen just goes blank.My search of other threads revealed error message problems but no blank screen problems.Would it make sense to backup my home files, reinstall XP and then reinstall UBUNTU?

It's gonna be hard to let go of Win 2k, but with support degrading I need a OS that's rock stable like 2k. My main concern is application compatibility so I can run my current windows app in Suse. Ultimately I would want a multiboot so I don't lose windows 2k.

I know that these forums aren't M$ support forums, but any mention of Linux and open source there just ends up in "don't use Linux"-type replies, so i figured i should ask it here. I have a quad-boot setup (Win7x64-Win7x64-K9.10x64-K9.10x64). I am in the process of migrating this setup to another (bigger) HDD. The Win7 system partitions were cloned using 3rd paty imaging software, Linux system partitions were cloned directly (cat /dev/sda5 > /dev/sdb5), data partitions were freshly created and populated with files copied from old partitions.
As the hard drive is bigger than previous one, i decided to add a little more space to Win7 system partitions. So when creating new partitions, i left 5GB unallocated space between them in order to grow the partitions later. I cloned the new partitions, ran the chkdsk with all options on to make sure the resulting partition survived the migration, then checked if it is readable under Linux (it was), used KPartitioner to grow the partition to the new size, again booted into Win7 Recovery, ran chkdsk with all options on, removed bootloader and made a new one using bcdboot.
Now, my Linuxes boot OK (there was some wankery involved but nothing too serious), but neither of my two Win7 can. I checked the bootloader, fiddled with different settings (e.g. removed setting the root by UUID), even tried to manually boot it from commandline - to no avail. After "chainloader +1" and "boot" it just does nothing. No error messages, nothing at all - the console screen doesn't even clear.
I am considering moving to Ubuntu 10.04. Is there any way of migrating the programs and games that I have downloaded in Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 10.04? I have also downloaded the Kubuntu KDE desktop.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 3 SATA hard drives, one 500GB NTFS with Windows, one 320GB With Linux (one partition)and one newly purchased 1TB. The 500GB has Windows, which I use to LAN and do graphic stuff while I set up Wine. Its got 1GB free space. The 320 I found in my garage, and is on it last leg, often not showing as boot or displaying as "Bzbzbzbzbzbzbzbzbzb bzbzbzbzb" (No lies). As I was low on space already, I decided to by a 1TB, move Ubuntu across and go from there. How would I copy my system from one HDD to the other, and also add a 500GB NTFS partition. What is the ideal way to set up the partitions, and how big should my swap be? I looked for partitioning guides but they're all really outdated (one suggested a whole 128mb swap).
View 2 Replies View RelatedIve been using Ubuntu 32bit on my work Dell E6400 for nearly a year now with no problems. It is capable of running Ubuntu 64bit and Ive tried out the live CD which seems ok. I have a spare 40GB HDD and a USB caddy so Id like to install Ubuntu 64bit onto that and start working with that as a trial. Once im happy I can get all the usual things I need for my work (like vpnc) working then I'll wipe the main internal HDD and install Ubuntu 64bit.
Apart from backing up my home directory, id like to backup a list of my installed packages as a list of reference so I know what to add into my new install. Is there a "apt" command to do this and list the packages in a way where if I install those packages, I'll not hit any dependancy problems by installing one before another?
Is it possible to migrate from Linux Mint 11 to Ubuntu 11.04 without reinstalling the whole system, i.e. as if it was an upgrade from a previous version from Ubuntu. I would like to avoid having to reinstall and reconfigure all the applications I installed in Mint.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using a wubi install of Ubuntu 10.10 for the past few months on my girlfriend's laptop, which has less hardware issues than my more recent laptop. Now that I'm a little more versed in Ubuntu, I'd like to transfer my Wubi install onto an actual partition on my laptop drive for a traditional dual boot.
Is this possible, and if anyone's done this before, would you be able to spare a few minutes and outline the process? I wouldn't know where to start and how to do things since I'm dealing more or less with a file system acting like a partition than an actual one.
I found the steps of migrating a Wubi install to partion via the Wubi Guide, but it seems those are steps for migrating a wubi install to a new partition on the same computer.
I've been looking at Gnome 3 and the Gnome Shell and I don't like what I see. The Gnome devs are taking things in a direction I don't like, giving us new ways to do things that don't interest me and making them mandatory. AFAICT, in the long run there's no real way to configure things to work the way I've been doing things for the last fifteen years. This is not a rant, not (mostly) a complaint, merely an observation. Clearly, I'm not part of their target demographic and I doubt that I'd want to be under the circumstances.
To me, that means it's time for me to move on and try something different. After some careful research, I've migrated my laptop to XFCE and am very happy with it. Now, I'm about to do the same to my desktop. This leaves me with an interesting question: what's the best way to remove Gnome from my two machines without removing any support needed for various programs that I'm accustomed to using and expect to continue using?
I have a working system running Jaunty. For various reasons I want to move to Karmic, but I don't want to use the "upgrade" feature in the software update manager. I need to swap some hard drives around, so I want to do a fresh installation. My question is, what is the easiest way to "migrate" a user to a fresh installation? On a Mac you can simply run the migration tool and it moves everything into place with relative ease, whether from a backup drive or from one computer to another. Is there any analogous program in Ubuntu? Or is it just so simple that such a program is unnecessary?

i started ubuntu from 9.04 now using 10.10 on my laptop. problem started when my laptop motherboard got bad beyond repair, and i had installed ubuntu 10.10 on it along with windows 7 (grub, dual boot). now i have pc running windows 7 and installed ubuntu 10.10 using wubi. i want all the settings of my laptop ubuntu 10.10 (programs installed, themes, softwares other configurations etc) to be transferred to this new ubuntu (installed using wubi) on my pc. how to do that? i have attached my laptop hard disk to my pc and am able to boot that installation on my pc, but now i have decided to remove laptop hard disk and use the same settings on pc hard disk.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI want to upgrade from another distro to ubuntu server for a few reasons. The only problem is I have a lot of data that needs to survive. here is how my computer is setup. I've 5 drives on the computer,
A- 10gb drive for OS and swap only, no data
B,C,D,E - 4x 500 GB drives in a LVM. they make up one large drive with xfs and this volume has about 1.2 TB of data. there is nothing fancy on it, no encryption and no software raid of course the little 10gb drive can be formatted no problem, but the LVM needs to be migrated over intact.

i have windows 7 installed on my laptop and working fine..i want to install Open Suse 11.2 along side. I tried installing by booting with DVD for Suse. But it gave me warning to delete the windows partition.I would like to keep the partition intact with windows 7 and install Suse. Any suggestions ?I can create partition on my laptop but i do not want to modify the current windows structure.

I figured out how to get the icon on the top panel, but that is naturally started as my user gsm.
Is there an easy way of migrating the whole mailbox and subfolders form the root install to the gsm user?

I have been happily running Wheezy on the Chromebook Pixel with little or not issues. Recently I needed to re-install and decided to try Jessie. Again I was following the excellent instructions at [URL] .... except with the Jessie image.
However everytime I went to install it (after adding in the mem=4G line) it just rebooted and brought me back to the same install screen again. I just downloaded the Wheezy image again and it is installing now perfectly.
i've installed suse 11.2 on an Acer laptop with Gnome 2.28 without any hicups. Everything working. External Harrdrive, USB Mouse & Keyboard. So been playing about with it and installed a Mac Theme which worked. Now I thought i'd start using the laptop through my Hannon 25 inch monitor, but i pluged it in set it to not display on the laptop only on the monitor and the monitor jsut displays wavy lines. Which i think is because it doesn't have the drivers for the monitor?

This never happened in earlier versions including 11.0. Has anybody else had this problem? I am using 64 bit and the Brother Linux driver doesn't work either.

It is supposed to load automatically, but somehow mine doesn't. If I go to a command prompt as SU and type "apcupsd start" and then go look at the GUI everything shows up fine.

As a reference I've used the tool "glxgears" for testing.We have two servers. One (server A) with SLES10 and the other (server B) with SLES11. We use X-Win32 (ver. 9.x) as an X-server on a Microsoft Windows client machine. Both servers are connected to with ssh with X11 forwarding enabled (Xclock works fine on both).Starting glxgears from server A works fine; Three nice gears are displayed.

No BIOS changes, just start the partitioner, partition, mount, it worked.And then... my computer didn't boot today.I disconnected the new hard drive and it went a little bit further, allowing me to log in as root and remove some lines in /etc/fstab. After that, it booted without any issues.I then remembered that the new drive was /dev/sda and the old drive /dev/sdb. I assume this is the reason for not booting, there is no GRUB on /dev/sda. How do I fix this? Can I simply plug in the cable for the new drive where the cable for the old drive was?

View 14 Replies View Relatedi wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

I know it is not recommended to do so but this will be a *lot* faster then having to reinstall and reconfiguring the system from scratch...I've synchronized the filesystems using rsync, used the following command line for that:

To make sure all data is mirrored properly, the next step is to boot into a live system and rerun rsync to copy any previously locked/altered files to the new storage. After moving this, I know I have to edit /etc/fstab on the new storage to make it match the proper UID for the drives. I also have to update grub and install grub into MBR of the new storage.
