OpenSUSE Install :: Migrating From Windows 2000 To SuSe?
Sep 8, 2011
I need a new OS and heard about Suse for the longest time and wanted to give it a go. It's gonna be hard to let go of Win 2k, but with support degrading I need a OS that's rock stable like 2k. My main concern is application compatibility so I can run my current windows app in Suse. Ultimately I would want a multiboot so I don't lose windows 2k.
I'm using a IBM Thinkpad T61 with these configurations: T9300(2.5GHz), 4GB RAM, Cricual SSD 120GB, 14.1in 1440x900 LCD, 128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abgn, Modem, 1Gb Ether, UltraNav, Sec Chip, FPR, Camera, Windows 2000 SP4

I've got several language multimedia CD-Rom's, made for Windows 95/98/98 SE and 2000, that I'm using by means of my daughter's old PC (Win 98 SE O.S.). However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

I was going to try to install plop on a windows 2000 so that I could dual boot win and linux. I ran [URL] to install. In the command window it said that the program can't be run under a Dos box and only to continue in I was not running in windows. If I tell it to continue, windows gives me an error message that says it is trying to write directly to the hard disk. It asks me to abort or ignore. If I ignore, the program seems to run. Is this not the right way to install plop to the hard disk?

I'm running Windows 7 (on my Acer Extensa 7630EZ) at the moment but I realized that I'm using mostly Linux programs (including the Linux shell through Cygwin) so I'm considering migrating to Linux (probably OpenSuse?). While this would certainly make my life easier, I'm also used to a few things on Windows I don't want to give up: Drivers.
I have a Canon PIXMA MP970 network printer and scanner the driver whereof has a GUI on Windows. I bet that even if I ever manage to get the printer to work on Linux, the GUI will be missing, so I will not have access to any of the options. (For me, this is a real reason for sticking to Windows, unfortunately.)
- Windows Media Player. Although it's not as universal as other media players (VLC), I got used to it because of its well-organized media library and the ability to include a SMB server in it or use a network media library.
- Adobe CS5. I don't know if it works with WINE, but I hope so.

I am migrating (many) .tex files created in WinEdt under Windows XP to Kile under openSUSE. Kile uses by default UTF-8 encoding, whereas my files are apparently ANSI... I infer this last from my failed attempt to manipulate WinEdt into encoding in UTF-8 for me, as follows: I had inserted the comment
% !Mode:: "TeX:UTF-8"
into my .tex file (following Re: UTF-8). When I had WinEdt open this file it objected in no uncertain terms: ``The file is not in UTF-8 format: Loading as ANSI.''
Summarizing, WinEdt provides me files encoded as ANSI. Yet in Kile -> Settings -> Configure Kile -> Open/Save there is no option to select ANSI.
Kile will open these files in read only mode, and I can then save them with a new name, and proceed -- but it would be more satisfying to know the ``proper'' approach to this.

I can't seem to boot to windows xp after installation and then update from the openSUSE 11.1 live cd. This is my /boot/grub/menu.lst
Code:
# Modified by YaST2. Last modification on Sun Apr 19 19:35:24 WEST 2009
default 0
timeout 8
##YaST - generic_mbr
[code]...
/dev/sda1 boots fine to the system restore from Acer. when selecting Windows option on boot menu it simply flickers and returns to the menu. /dev/sda3 is non bootable, symply filesystem. When using boot loader settings from YasT I go to other and press "Propose new configuration" it changes the menu but when pressing OK it asks for a floppy disk and doesn't save the configuration (so on new boot I return to the same).

I bought a new laptop in which a Linux Suse Enterprise Desktop is installed,After that, I installed Windows 7 by the common method: Using Gparted CD, but the problem is that after the end of the installing of Windows 7, the latter became as the first only OS installed in, and the grub of Linux Suse has been disabled , and the only way to enable the grab (in order to use dual-boot, switch between Suse and Win7) is to use the Linux Suse CD and enter to it for enter some prompt command (as u know), but I didn't get the CD with the attached pack, I got instead of it, a System Recovery CD, the only option shown in the first page is to restore the system and not to enter it
Hence my question: How can I enter to linuxSuse to enable the grub to activate the dual-boot?Can't I enable the dual-boot from command line of Windows 7?

I have installed Windows 7 Professional (64 bit version), and OpenSuse 11.2 (64 bit) on to a newly built Core i5 machine. I installed Windows first, with 3 partitions. The 100MB partition Windows reserves, a C: drive for the operating system and a D: drive for data. Both of these are NTFS partitions. I then installed OpenSuse into the unallocated section at the end of the new disk drive. The Linux partitioner showed OpenSuse in an extended partition, containing a swap / /home and /tmp partition. Both operating systems now appear to be working fine, but I'm worried about the Windows Disk Manager showing that the OpenSuse partions are primary ones, and are not inside an extended partition. It only shows a small amount of unallocated space at the end of the drive as being in an extended partition.
Should I delete OpenSuse and start again? Perhaps creating an extended partition with Windows before trying to reinstall OpenSuse? If I leave the disk as it is, is it likely to continue to dual boot without something unstable occuring? It may just be a Windows problem which will not be fatal, but I'm worried all my files may get scrambled at a some point in the future.

i have recently started using kde 4.x. I am trying to find out where are some kde 3.x feautures and how i can use them under kde 4.x
To be more specific:
A)IN kde 3.4 i was using multiple desktops. I still remember that i could see in my taskbar a preview of every virtual desktop and what applications are currently open on each desktop. In kde 4.x these icons are so small so i can't see any preview so there are not as useful as in previous verions
B)In kde 3.x i could easily create desktop shortcuts by dragging and droping icons. Right click on desktop gives no such an option.
C)What is the plasma dashboard(something like that)? Actually there is a small shortcut in the taskbar that seems to be working like the old one show desktop shortcut.

With the release of openSUSE 11.3 I decided to upgrade my three-year old computer which is running 11.0 and has been running out of disk for the last few months. I bought a new 500Gb HDD and installed it as the master drive, and moved my old drive to the slave. I installed 11.3 on the new drive. Too easy. Then I tried to mount my old drive so I could move my account files across. I wasn't able to mount the drive, which uses LVM (Logical Volume Manager). Is there any reason this wouldn't be recognised by 11.3?Then I tried to mount my new drive from my old system but 11.0 doesn't have support for the ext4 filesystem. I loaded the ext4dev kernel module with no joy:
Code:
samsara:/ # lsmod | grep ext4
ext4dev 222360 0
[code]....

I wanted to try openSuse alongside with Windows Vista and Ubuntu. During the installation Suse wanted to delete my Windows partition. Of course I denied and stopped this installation, but now when starting my computer, the boot menu gives Vista, Ubuntu and Suse as a choice, but if I choose Vista, the Suse installation process is starting instead of Windows, there is no way to get Windows started (fortunately Ubuntu is working so that I can write this message). How can I get Windows starting?

I am installing SUSE 11.2, and went with the default options, now it reached the point of "Windows Domain Membership". At job I do not remember the right names, so I tried some but I get an error message which says "cannot use the group "WORKGROUP" for Linux authentication", etc.So I would like to avoid windows authentication, but at this point I do not see this option. I can only try domain names or abort the installation. What could I do here in order to finish the installation without windows memebership?

I recently migrated from SuSE 11.2 to UBUNTU 10.10.I didn't run into any major problems until I tried to boot into XP.The screen just goes blank. My search of other threads revealed error message problems but no blank screen problems.Would it make sense to backup my home files, reinstall XP and then reinstall UBUNTU?

I am trying to open an encrypted home directory from opensuse 11.2 with opensuse 11.3. This means i have a user.img and a user.key So far i have done:
losetup /dev/loop3 user.img
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/loop3 home
Enter passphrase for /dev/loop3:
No key available with this passphrase. At this point it will not accept my passphrase.
A luksDump reveals:
cryptsetup luksDump /dev/loop3
LUKS header information for /dev/loop3
[code]....
When i try to use the key file, i get:
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/loop3 home --key-file home.key No key available with this passphrase.

Description: I want to migrate all home directories and users from one webserver to another. The old server runs OpenSuSE 11.2 and the new one OpenSuSE 11.4. I appended only the userpart of the passwd file from the old server to the new one. I did the same with the shadow file and the group file. I checked the user rights for all three of them and they were ok (shadow 600). I have done such a migration before and at that time it worked fine. Now for the weird part:
Errors: At first it seemed everything was ok. Websites and webshops were visible and working correctly. At first ftp seemed to work fine. Login worked but when uploading files, the error messages appeared: permission denied. Further testing gave following results:
-Root and users can login on console with their old passwords.Root can create new users, but they can not login: some error message comes, but is unreadable since it stays too short on display. After that it prints hint: on a new line and on another new line it gives a new login prompt. Root and users can change user's password, but then they can not login anymore. The same unreadable error message appears.
-Users can login with ftp, even after changing passwords(!) but can not change or add files var/log/messages only shows: uthentication failure twice.
Actions so far:
Emptied /tmp
reboot
copied the users again from passwd and shadow
checked UID's and GID's again
googled a lot

I've been told to setup a first ubuntu sw development pc in my office. Our network domain server is Windows 2000 Advanced. Are there any issues or limitations that would prevent this marriage? Will it be apparent when I crack open ubuntu? Maybe a link to this procedure? Is joining a workgroup equally simple?

I have been learning about P2P networks and have been experimenting with all kinds of operating systems. I figured out how to share and access Windows shared files on other Windows computers.
Now I'm trying to access Windows shared folders from Linux operating systems.
Here's the deal. I created a shared folder on Windows 2000 Professional. I want to open it from Kubuntu 10.04.
I am not running Virtualbox. These are separate operating systems on separate computers.

The MBR was set to hd0, but should this be installed on the Linux or Windows partition to prevent this?

I am trying to do as the title states, I am however having problems. I have tried deleting the profile and profile.ini in kubuntu and copying over the windows profile to home/user/.mozilla/firefox for example with firefox, this didn't work. I tried copying it there with the existing profile and changing the path of the ini file, to the windows profile name, this didn't work either. The only thing that I can think is that I am using 64 bit windows and 32 bit kubuntu.I have tried using firefox sync, this didn't work either.
