Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install Numpy?
Sep 13, 2010
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit) with python 2.6 and have had great difficulties with the installation of numpy and matplotlib (matplotlib needs numpy). I have tried several different approaches --- but unsuccessful still. I have downloaded the following:
* python-numpy_1.4.1-4_amd64.deb
* python-numpy_1.5.0-1ppa1_amd64.deb
* numpy-1.5.0.tar.gz
and,
* matplotlib_0.99.3-1ubuntu1.debian.tar.gz
* matplotlib_0.99.3.orig.tar.gz
* matplotlib-1.0.0.tar.gz
(I gave up on matplotlib 1.0.0) How can I install numpy with matplotlib? I have attached a python script to test the installation.

I'm trying to install numpy-1.6.0b2 on my Linux machine and I'm having a lot of trouble. After downloading the source files, I try to build with the gfortran compiler. I receive a massive list of errors, most non-fatal, until I reach the following -
[Code]...
I've been working at this for quite some time and nothing I have found online seems to work. I know it's a longshot but I was wondering if anyone has had this same problem and has found a way to fix it.

I'm a n00b to both numpy and python. I was wondering what the most intelligent way to write the trapezoid rule function was:
Code:
>>> import numpy as np
>>> a=np.array([1,2,3,4,5])
>>> def mytrapz(vec):
total=0
for i in xrange(0,len(vec)-1):
total+=(vec[i]+vec[i+1])/2.0
return total
>>> mytrapz(a)12.0 This is exactly what I would do in C and I'm sure the for loop is not the fastest way (as is the case for my interpreted langs). Yes, I know there is already numpy.mytrapz... I'm interested in the most efficient way to loop over arrays in such a way that each iteration accesses more than one cell.

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.
He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

I downloaded and mounted debian-8.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso on my work machine's VirtualBox v5.0.12 to check out Debian stable/Jessie's installer and clean installation in case I need to do it soon. I like the new installer compared to 11/24/2011 on my old desktop machine. It is much nicer, fancier with its advanced options, etc.
However, I ran into issues with its "Select and Install" part when I selected desktop managers (e.g., KDE and Gnome) and continued. It failed as shown in [URL] .... images. Why? I tried again from scratch and same thing. If I don't select any and just select non-GUI stuff (e.g, SSH and standard system utilities), then it works but I want the pretty GUI stuff.

I have an older dell CSX laptop that I would like to load up with ubuntu or kubuntu... or anything other than XP. The problem is that the laptop does not have the option to boot from USB, I don't have a CD/Floppy drive to attach to the media bay and I don't have a pcmia that will PXE boot... So, do I have any other options? I really don't want to go purchase anything for this laptop because it's old, but if I could get it reloaded with anything it would be ok for a netbook... It will boot into XP, but its very sluggish.

I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on a toshiba satellite L505 that has windows 7 64 bit.When I try to boot from the cd I burned I get that the file /ubuntu/winnt/wubildr.mbr is not available and to repair with the windows cd.But when I checked the command prompt in windows 7, it is there. I did a repair twice and it still won't boot completely. One time for loading the try ubuntu before installing, it stopped at child_objects and sat there for 10 minutes.I also did try the 32 bit on a 64 bit machine but still nothing.I have loaded previous versions of ubuntu for relatives with no problem.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop edition 32 bit using a usb stick.[URL]Then I made the usb bootable using universal USB installer (have also tried Unetbootin). After restarting, it starts to install but always gets stuck at Step 3, where it asks for the keyboard layout. It simply do not go to Step 4.It also detects an application problem "Sorry the program "parted server" closed unexpectedly". I tried to report it, but it does not reports the error.The live version seems to be working fine. I can run firefox and some simple applications on it.

I'd like to install 10.10 netbook edition on my Asus eee 1000, but when I choose my USB drive from the boot select screen, all I get is a single line telling me:'SYSLINUX 3.86 2010-04-01 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al'I have tried installing the ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386.iso file on my USB drive many times with pendrivelinux.com's Universal USB Installer and once with the USB Creator on the .iso file, but it always gives me the same one line and nothing else. I even tried it on my Dell laptop, but still the same problem.

I have not been able to install and successfully run Ubuntu 9.10. I am now wondering if I will be able to go from 9.04 to 10.04 this coming April. I think that somewhere I read it isn't good to do this, but I don't have much choice.

I have an HP EVO W6000 Workstation: Dual 2.2 Xeon Processors with 2 Gigs of Rambus Memory with 120 gig IDE HD and a DVD/RW IDE Burner. It is a 32bit Workstation. I just downloaded the 9.10 ISO of Ubuntu and created the CD. When putting the CD into the PC it will boot to the CD and the Ubuntu screen appears giving me the choices on how do I want to install Ubuntu but when I choose Install Ubuntu and hit enter nothing happens at all. It will let me boot to the HD but there is nothing on the drive. It is a clean HD with nothing on it. I'm not dual booting with another OS Like Windoze. I'm just want to install Ubuntu on this PC all by itself. I am using the 32bit version of Ubuntu since my workstation only supports a 32bit OS.

I'm trying to set up a simple computer that will be used to run an IRC bot only. All it needs is an active internet connection, some processing power and for Ubuntu 9.10 to install correctly.I've got all of those BUT the working install When I run the installer, I have to use Safe Graphics Mode to be able to get it through the setup screens (not much RAM). Everything is great, except for that when it starts up the partition manager during the install, it says it can't create a ext4 file system also, it says it has a problem with creating 2 other partitions and that Linux won't be able to detect changes until a restart.

Decided to upgrade my 8.04 server to 10.04 today. Everything went smooth when I tried to install in vmware. When I tried to install it on my real machine the installation hangs at 74% Storing Language...
I've checked the disk and I tried different ways to install (different language, both keyboard and system). The first two attempts the installer just turns off and the computer reboots. This third time it just hangs. how to debug and solve this problem?
It's the x86_64 version. I'm using the standard options all the time including LVM on whole disk.

i've got my friend into trouble in my zeal to wean away my friend from windows. i convinced him to go for a dual boot system of XP and U 9.10. first we successfully installed XP but then got stuck when we were unable to locate the chipset driver - not even the HP website (horrible) had it ! it seemed to offer everything from modem drivers to utilities but there is no trace of the chipset / motherboard drivers. we then tried to install U 9.10 and got an error message in the middle of the installation process. it has been discussed in this forum but without any clear resolution. basically, it said the following -
Code:
[Errno 5] Input/output error This particular error is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment. btw, all along we suspected that there could be something wrong with the HDD of his computer which is Compaq Presario C 505 TU. i then tried to install U 9.10 completely on the HDD and this time got the same error message! similar problems came up when i tried installing with U 8.10 and U 9.04 we finally gave up but did run a HDD test from within the BIOS (Phoenix). The result was clear and we got the message - "SMART pass". so basically the computer is not working now because there seems to be a problem with the chipset drivers while i can't get any version of Ubuntu to install on the machine

I have an old Fedora machine setup to use Raid-1. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop on it, but the installer can't seem to override the raid partition. I have two 80GB drives, but the "Prepare disk space" screen only shows one 80GB partition called "/dev/mapper/isw_dfafhagdgg_RAID_Volume01". When I selected "Erase and use the entire disk", it gives me the error "The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of Serial ATA RADI isw_dfafhagdgg_RAID_Volume0 (mirror) failed".
So I tried going back and specifying partitions manually. However, it only shows me the one device /dev/mapper/isw_dfafhagdgg_RAID_Volume01, and I can't delete it to get my original two hard drives, so I can recreate a RAID-1 setup. What am I doing wrong? I thought Ubuntu supported software RAID-1?

I have a Gateway laptop currently running Win Vista Home Basic. I have grown tired of repeatedly reinstalling this OS so I thought I would give Ubuntu a shot. The laptop is running a 1.6 GHz Celeron, 1470 MB of RAM, and has an 80 Gig hard drive. My problem is that I cannot get Ubuntu to load/install. I cannot run it from CD, I cannot setup as dual boot, and I cannot setup as a standalone. I am not worried about wiping out my Vista, as I said I have grown tired of it. OH and I cannot locate my Vista install disk at this time either.

This error is actually slightly different from another one that I was previously receiving involving 'var/lib/dpkg/status' and the "Breaks" field issue. If anyone knows how to fix this it

I cant install ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop. I downloaded the ubuntu iso from its official site. I tried several ways to install it like :within windows, through usb, through burning the iso but neither of them worked. When i boot from usb or CD there's just a black screen after the choosing one of the options (i.e. try ubuntu,install ubuntu,etc) and nothing happens. So I had to shut it down by holding the switch after about 20 minutes. But it works on PC without a problem. I have installed it on my PC. If i install it within windows, it completes the installation and then whan I reboot it , it says completing remaining installation and the black screen appears.

I am trying to install 11.04 on an older Averatec laptop. (AMD Athlon XP-M 2200+, 512 MD DDR, 60 GB HD) I tried Live CD and alternative. They both freeze up during installation. Live CD is definitely good as I can open Ubuntu as a trial on another computer. Booting as a trial on the laptop also freezes up.
Tried boot parameters "nomodeset" and "acpi=off" without success. Reformated disk several times with dban which hasn't helped. Even tried xbuntu in case there wasn't enough memory. That froze up as well.
