I have not been able to install and successfully run Ubuntu 9.10. I am now wondering if I will be able to go from 9.04 to 10.04 this coming April. I think that somewhere I read it isn't good to do this, but I don't have much choice.
View 3 RepliesI'm trying to install Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 on my Eee PC 1015PE. but it appears that GParted which is used to partition the HDD is unable to successfully display partition table, it just shows that /dev/sda is all unallocated, and it offers just to create new partition table.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased an inexpensive bluetooth dongle for my laptop running lucid 64-bit. the device, however, doesn't seem to want to work in ubuntu. most functions (everything but turning the device OFF) fail, causing gui windows to hang, and i mostly receive messages relating to the device timing out.
Before you ask, it is not the device: the dongle works flawlessly in windows 7 after being autodetected and autoinstalled. i attempted to boot from the lucid cd, and the problem persisted.

I have one database for my web application. It's using MyISAM tables. In MySQL admin, I went to Backup and created a scheduled backup project called backup1. On the advanced tab, I selected "Lock All Tables" and checked the box for "Backup Selected Database Completely". On the Schedule Backup tab I have "Execute this Project Daily" selected and the time 1AM. The target directory is set along with the connection name. The connection it's using is the same MySQL user that my web application uses in order to utilize the database. It has full access to that database. Now when the backup file is created, it backs up no data at all.
Instead in creates files that are 580bytes in size. When I open the files they contain:

I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate 7600 on my HP500 Laptop, but I want to try other linux distro such as Debian. I have installed Debian 5.0.3 with VMware Workstation 7.0.1 on my machine instead of really installed it. Details is as follows: 1.Download vmware 7.0.1 and Debian Lenny 5.0.3 seperately.
2.Host Win 7 Ultimate 7600:
configure the local connection to "internet connection share",choose "VMware Network Adapter VMnet1"
Guest Debian 5.0.3: NAT + DHCP
3. Configurate /etc/apt/source.lists

I have recently made the final steps to my switch over to ubuntu, after some years of deliberation. I have successfully installed it on my newer HP DV6 Laptop with no issues; using the wudi tool to download the latest edition. However, on my older desktop ( custom built ) i have not been able to successfully use ubuntu due to it not finding any monitor when i download the proprietary drivers for my EVGA Nvidia GTX285 card. I am stuck using 640x480 or less resolution on my Dell 2405 24" monitor.
I have read and pulled articles from the internet, but my skill in coding and altering ubuntu is limited. I am unsure how to progress thus far with my failures. I would very much love to use ubuntu on my desktop and more thoroughly switch my computing experience.
I've tried downloading 11.4 64-bit about a dozen times, and it always failed to checksum comparison. I've tried downloading it directly using Mozilla. I've tried that from a mirror (several actually). I've tried using Download Them All to get it and is failed both the MD5 and SHA1. BTW, those fail the checksum as soon as the Download Them All window opens. I've tried bitTorrent. I've tried it on two different machines. I've tried it from linux through Mozilla and Download Them All just to be sure it's not my anti-virus or software firewall.
BTW, in the process of installing a new HD on my desktop, somehow my OpenSUSE linux install has gotten corrupted (or something), so I don't have access to a linux install. Any suggestions how I can get a good download? I'm hoping I can use it to repair my existing install, and to install openSUSE on my laptop.
Recently I have built an old pc using bits and bobs that have been collecting in the garage for years and decided to try and turn it into a file server, and to get some experience in networking etc. Now I had a choice of 2 motherboards for the system:
1.)gigabyte ga-8siml
2.)elitegroup l7s7a2
I first built the pc using the gigabyte board,install was successful and ubuntu server booted on restart. The only problem was,there is no onboard lan on the board and the only spare wireless pci card I found was completely frazzled. Rather than buying a new wifi card to get the system running, I thought I would try the other motherboard since this had onboard lan. The elitegroup motherboard however does not have onboard vga, so I dug out an old agp ati radeon 9200se 128m ddr tvo graphics card and plugged her in. The install went fine,but after a restart, I'm left with a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen.
If I hold down 'shift' for long enough I can bring up the grub menu,but if I select anything I get no signal on the monitor. After a while on the blinking cursor screen the monitor will time out to no signal on its own. I have tried the installation using different combinations of the options given by F6 of the first installation screen but to no avail. I have also tried installing the generic kernel as opposed to the generic-pae.

View 11 Replies View RelatedHas anyone successfully installed openSUSE 11.2 on a Dell PowerEdge 1850 system?Undoubtedly, it wasn't wise to attempt to upgrade from 10.2 to 11.2 but I was forced into it by a security audit of DMZ systems.It didn't go as smoothly as the jump from 9.3 to 10.2.I've spent the better part of a week getting an openSUSE 11.2 system installed.I went back to reiserfs and managed to get through and apply all the updates to openSUSE 11.2 today.When I got to the final reboot, it failed when I attempted to log into the system.Basically, the keyboard and mouse became inoperable.The only way out of this situation is to mash the reset button.
Rebooting into safe-mode and adding level 3 to the safe mode boot options, I get to the point of starting sshd when the lock-up occurs.It looks like X11 is the culprit.Booting a forensics DVD, I find that there is an xorg.conf.installation but no xorg.conf file.The ATI Radeon VE chip set is used on the PowerEdge.From another openSUSE system that I haven't upgraded, I see that X11 was configured for VESA mode. This is, probably, the mode that is needed as console access is, normally, through a KVM.Can anyone provide a way to get past this problem with a workable keyboard and mouse?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:

I have just installed Debian and the installation went smooth (net installation). The last prompt was to specify if you want to be able to boot 3 different OS's using grub. I answered yes (I have Win7, Ubuntu and now wanted to install Debian for testing purposes). Is there any way I could manually add entry to grub for booting Debian, for instance from Ubuntu adding to menu.lst?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi just bought a cheep notebook for school. Not being a fan of windows I decided try and download Ubuntu 10.10 for the laptops. I downloaded the content on a flash drive since it has no disk drive and it installed. It seemed to be running fine, then it said to finish I need to restart. So i did, but all that comes up is the Acer start up (with option to hit F2 for options) and then goes directly to a black screen with a flashing cursor. It makes no sounds other then a beep when I hit too many button.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm a complete newbie, trying to get away from Windows Vista! I had some issues installing Ubuntu, but finally got it sorted - so I thought. I wanted to view a dnl file, so tried to boot into Windows, and I got a white screen with big red letters saying "ERROR". So I held down the off button for 5 seconds, and then tried to reboot. But now all I get is the words:
error: no such partition
grub rescue>
Before I go further, I'll summarise the problem with my install. Basically it would only get partway through, if at all, and then all the options would freeze...I could move the mouse, but that was it. Similarly with running Ubuntu on the LiveCD. After a lot of hassle, and some helpful members of the community, it turned out that all I needed to do was use the option "nomodest" when installing, and it all went fine. Well actually I had to retry it again in recovery mode because I think maybe a driver wasn't loaded (?), but after that everything seemed alright. So as mentioned before, I've come to my present issue. Typing "Is" gives "Unknown command" (or maybe "invalid"...I can't remember). And if I type "set" I get something like "prefix=..." and something else...sorry I can't remember and I don't want to turn off the computer now just in case things don't work again.
Anyway I managed to boot and run Ubuntu using the LiveCD, and started looking for solutions. Note that I used the "nomodest" option again to boot. Anyway all the solutions involve first using "fdisk -l" to find the partitions. Here is the output:

I downloaded and mounted debian-8.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso on my work machine's VirtualBox v5.0.12 to check out Debian stable/Jessie's installer and clean installation in case I need to do it soon. I like the new installer compared to 11/24/2011 on my old desktop machine. It is much nicer, fancier with its advanced options, etc.
However, I ran into issues with its "Select and Install" part when I selected desktop managers (e.g., KDE and Gnome) and continued. It failed as shown in [URL] .... images. Why? I tried again from scratch and same thing. If I don't select any and just select non-GUI stuff (e.g, SSH and standard system utilities), then it works but I want the pretty GUI stuff.
I have an older dell CSX laptop that I would like to load up with ubuntu or kubuntu... or anything other than XP. The problem is that the laptop does not have the option to boot from USB, I don't have a CD/Floppy drive to attach to the media bay and I don't have a pcmia that will PXE boot... So, do I have any other options? I really don't want to go purchase anything for this laptop because it's old, but if I could get it reloaded with anything it would be ok for a netbook... It will boot into XP, but its very sluggish.

I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on a toshiba satellite L505 that has windows 7 64 bit.When I try to boot from the cd I burned I get that the file /ubuntu/winnt/wubildr.mbr is not available and to repair with the windows cd.But when I checked the command prompt in windows 7, it is there. I did a repair twice and it still won't boot completely. One time for loading the try ubuntu before installing, it stopped at child_objects and sat there for 10 minutes.I also did try the 32 bit on a 64 bit machine but still nothing.I have loaded previous versions of ubuntu for relatives with no problem.

Mostly i've to boot 3,4 even 5 times to reach the desktop. That blue&white line (kernel PAE) is always visible on bottom of screen but many times it stopped to black screen and no gnome cursor after that.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an HP EVO W6000 Workstation: Dual 2.2 Xeon Processors with 2 Gigs of Rambus Memory with 120 gig IDE HD and a DVD/RW IDE Burner. It is a 32bit Workstation. I just downloaded the 9.10 ISO of Ubuntu and created the CD. When putting the CD into the PC it will boot to the CD and the Ubuntu screen appears giving me the choices on how do I want to install Ubuntu but when I choose Install Ubuntu and hit enter nothing happens at all. It will let me boot to the HD but there is nothing on the drive. It is a clean HD with nothing on it. I'm not dual booting with another OS Like Windoze. I'm just want to install Ubuntu on this PC all by itself. I am using the 32bit version of Ubuntu since my workstation only supports a 32bit OS.

All it needs is an active internet connection, some processing power and for Ubuntu 9.10 to install correctly.I've got all of those BUT the working install When I run the installer, I have to use Safe Graphics Mode to be able to get it through the setup screens (not much RAM). Everything is great, except for that when it starts up the partition manager during the install, it says it can't create a ext4 file system also, it says it has a problem with creating 2 other partitions and that Linux won't be able to detect changes until a restart.

I've checked the disk and I tried different ways to install (different language, both keyboard and system). The first two attempts the installer just turns off and the computer reboots. This third time it just hangs. how to debug and solve this problem?
It's the x86_64 version. I'm using the standard options all the time including LVM on whole disk.
i've got my friend into trouble in my zeal to wean away my friend from windows. i convinced him to go for a dual boot system of XP and U 9.10. first we successfully installed XP but then got stuck when we were unable to locate the chipset driver - not even the HP website (horrible) had it ! it seemed to offer everything from modem drivers to utilities but there is no trace of the chipset / motherboard drivers. we then tried to install U 9.10 and got an error message in the middle of the installation process. it has been discussed in this forum but without any clear resolution. basically, it said the following -

I have an old Fedora machine setup to use Raid-1. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop on it, but the installer can't seem to override the raid partition. I have two 80GB drives, but the "Prepare disk space" screen only shows one 80GB partition called "/dev/mapper/isw_dfafhagdgg_RAID_Volume01". When I selected "Erase and use the entire disk", it gives me the error "The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of Serial ATA RADI isw_dfafhagdgg_RAID_Volume0 (mirror) failed".
So I tried going back and specifying partitions manually. However, it only shows me the one device /dev/mapper/isw_dfafhagdgg_RAID_Volume01, and I can't delete it to get my original two hard drives, so I can recreate a RAID-1 setup. What am I doing wrong? I thought Ubuntu supported software RAID-1?
